I am a proud Xoom owner/user but when it comes to available office suites I feel very neglected. I started a thread over at the Xoom forum comparing some of the main features of three major (tablet optimized) office suites.
The official Asus Transformer website states that it will be shipped with the Polaris Suite. Has anyone tried it yet? I know it will be next to impossible to get the apk to run it on the Xoom so if anyone wants to add their experience on the Transformer? Here is the link to the PowerPoint presentation that I used to evaluate the compatibility.
Your help is really appreciated!
it doesn't work to bad.. everything displays apart from the line of symbol text and the the page numbers just show up as hash. The speed of the app is fine in fact is is almost instant.

It has some functions that most other office apps don't have - insert table for example. Even better the table functionality is very feature rich meaning you can do things like merge cells.
I have had it crash on me, and when it did so, it lost all of the work I had done - it would be nice if they did a periodic save.
Speed in use is fine.
I'm comparing it to various paid for office apps I have had on the iPad, and it compares favourably so far.
A question is, is it better than Google docs?
I posted a comparison between (for now Word and PowerPoint) Office Suites in the Xoom forum. Bottom line is that none of the currently available apps should be considered perfect. Hopefully the competition coming up with all the Honeycomb tablets will spark a flood of well-developed apps.
I have found that the doc/xls files saved with polaris suite won't open with openoffice or libre office on my ubuntu 10.10 box, which is a shame, as I really like the functionality of it otherwise. In fact, I don't even think they opened with QuickOffice, which I installed next and, despite its more limited functionality, is reasonably good on my transformer!

I wonder if they open in Word. Such suite should have at least RTF. DOC/XLS are very bad choices especially since there are several very different versions of DOC/XLS formats out there.

I checked out his other videos and it made me want to test drive the Transformer so badly. Even my wife who leans towards iProducts was pretty impressed by its options!
Has anyone been able to get google docs integration work on on Polaris?
I can download a document from my google docs. However it will only save it locally and it won't upload it back to google docs. I also tried creating a new document and pushing it up to google docs and that also failed.

If you have the Google Docs app installed, then within Polaris you can click-and-hold on a locally saved file, choose Send -> Docs and it will pass it to the Docs app for uploading.
But that just adds it to your Google docs, and doesn't overwrite and previous doc of the same name.
Damn I was really hoping for decent google docs support. I use google docs alot and not having read write acces is a pain. Does anyone know if Docs to go or quick office has read wirte google docs support and have tried on the xformer?

Can you not use Google Docs via the web browser on the TF?
You can use the mobile docs site but it is very basic. The desktop site crashes the browser when I try to use it.

The way LibreOffice doesn't open my Polaris file is clearly an LO bug: it crashes trying to do a division by 0.
I'm not allowed to post a URL on this forum but I can tell you that it is bug 40686 in the freedesktop.org bugzilla.
Your best bet is to get quickoffice and doc2go. Between polaris, quickoffice, and doc2go, you should be able to do everything you want to do on-the-go.

Hey guys,
I'm considering getting a transformer and I'm really interested in the remote desktop feature of the myCloud app that is included. It isn't specified, but I kind of get the impression that you can only access computers on the same network. Is this true? If it is, it kind of makes the feature a little bit useless.. If I'm on the same network, I'm obviously close to the computer so I could just walk over there and use the computer rather than trying to control it through my tablet. If I could use it anywhere though - at university, for example - this could be very useful. Have any of you guys tried this out yet?
It's also too bad that it doesn't work with linux.. but oh well. I can always use ssh for that, I guess. Sometimes having an actual GUI is kind of nice though.

I haven't used it since I don't have a transformer(yet anyway), but I believe that there is some software you need to install on the pc first. The myCloud app should come pre-installed on the transformer though.
It's Splashtop, which IMO is the best (local?) remote desktop software. It's very fast, like very very fast, and it transmits sound. I use it on my iPhone to listen to driver radios during NASCAR races. If you want something that works no matter where you are, buy LogMeIn.

Because they got a license with Splashtop. Splashtop costs money normally, but they are including it free.
Who knows, or cares why. It's an awesome piece of software.

From the demo video, it is very fast. Unfortunately, I don't think I can use it to connect to my work PC.
What I usually do with my Windows 7 laptop
1. VPN to my company network
2. Remote desktop to my work PC using mstsc.exe
3. Do my work from there.
Is there a way to do this using a Honeycomb tablet without having to install any third party software on my work PC?

No, not with the app ASUS includes. You have to install the splashtop software and you have to be on a local network.

Well there are remote apps in the android market place - I don't know what mstsc is, but some of them work with the standard windows 7 remote desktop protocol, ie you don't need to install anything on the pc

Do you remember the name of that app? I hope it works with Win XP also (we still have XP at work).
I will to wait until I get my hands on the Transformer to try this out.
I use RemoteRDP on my Droid Incredible to connect to Windows via Remote Desktop. (RDP = remote desktop protocol) Also, mstsc.exe is the executable in Windows for remote desktop.
RemoteRDP has a free version that only allows you to connect to one computer. I bought the full version to connect to multiple computers. Setup a little port forwarding on your home router, and you're good to go!
..I'm still hoping the mynet software including the Asus splashtop will have some middle-hosting capability similar to gotomypc or logmein.com so it won't be LAN only... but I have no data to base that on, just a hope and guess!

I'm 98% sure it does not. It's just a renamed version of Splashtop.
Confirmation for you all that the newest update adds Splashtop for free. Other updates/faults I've listed HERE if you are interested.

Well dont know you got your TF, but I got my TF on launch date and I had to do an update for mycloud app to show up on my tablet.

If it was not included just flash the latest firmware on the Asus site.
I didn't think I'd get so much use out of it, since I usually only remote into my home systems when I'm away from home. However, I've actually found myself using it to watch cable in the bedroom when my wife is watching something else on the actual TV. I start Windows Media Center on my desktop that has a tuner, and am simply amazed at how well it performs. Video is as high-quality as if I was watching it on the desktop.
Also, note that Asus has stated that a version will be coming this summer that supports access from remote networks. I doubt that it will perform as well as it does locally, but if they can get even close to the same performance it will be a great solution.
This is another of those little surprises that have me loving the TF so much. Asus has put a lot of work into making a truly useful machine, in my opinion.

You need to go to asus website and manually download the new firmware for your region. Then you'll get myCloud.

I thought that something may have come with the tablet, but other than the one-sheet that talked about the File Manager, I haven't really seen anything.

No need, Android doesn't work like a PC
one that comes with it is very basic are there better ones people are using, also i tried and epub book on there and i to put it in the root of the storage for it to be seen, is there not a way to put all the books in 1 folder and them be seen by the book readers

Someone suggested that a corrupt epub file might be causing the trouble with My library. Me personally, never had a problem with it and I use it a lot.
As I mentioned in that thread, the best epub reader was considered Aldiko, available from the market.

Overdrive Media Console
I don't know if it is compatible with Honeycomb, but Overdrive Media Console is an excellent book reader. You can use it to check ebooks and audiobooks out of your local library for free. All that I have used through Overdrive gave me 21 days before the books expire.
I haven't received my Transformer yet but have been itching to give this app a shot on it. If anyone gives it a go, please report back with the results as to whether or not it works on the Transformer with Honeycomb.
Overdrive can be obtained for free on the Android Market.

Don't have my TF yet, but I have a Nook Color. I like Aldiko better than the Nook's ebook app. Specifically I love the night mode (reverses colors) and the slide to adjust brightness on the fly.

I have aldiko, ezpdf, google books, and amazon kindle, but I actually like MyLibrary the best. IMO MyLibrary is not basic at all. I'm not sure how to solve the file location problem, but I think MyLibrary has the best features. You can highlight, annotate, search, organize bookshelves and do text to speech. The pdf viewer is pretty nice as well - it puts a preview blurry page before it loads, unlike ezpdf, and that lets you decide whether you want to skip the page or not (useful in magazines with ads).
I haven't encountered many bugs (just the rare force close), and I haven't tried the nook app yet though. I'll try it out later and maybe give my impressions.
Here's the various apps I'm currently using:
Amazon's Kindle - for *.mobi (Amazon E-book format)
ezPDF Reader - for *.pdf (Acrobat)
Perfect Viewer - for *.cbr (Comic Book RAR Archive)
So far I've had good experiences with the above 3.

+1. Also has a night mode and looks good in landscape. If the Asus app had a night mode, I'd just use it though. I wish the Nook app had the search features of the Asus app, but then again, I can't remember the last time I searched a book I was reading.
I am a software developer, and have been creating Android apps for businesses since 2008. Up until recently all of the apps I have created have been for businesses to serve specific needs.
When I recently bought my TF300T I quickly wanted to start leaving the laptop home, but there are just a few things left I still cannot do on Android.
So my question to you is, what would you like to be able to do in Android that you cannot yet do?
I'd like to see a word processor that supports features such as: multiple columns, page numbering, a ruler, fonts, spacing, margins, multiple paper sizes, printing directly to a wireless or shared printer etc.
Some of these features are available for various Office suite word processors, but I have yet to find one that supports them all. It's getting better, but we're not there yet.
A robust office suite, really, is the only thing that's missing for me.
Google bought quickoffice, so I hope to see a Drive/office hybrid. MS is also working on office for android tablets afaik.
So office apps might not be the best choice as a software dev.
Has someone made a nice music player app that takes advantage of the tablet screen? Basically multiple frames so you can see what's playing (with basic controls) on one side of the screen, and be able scroll through your playlist or music directory on the other side of the screen.
Something like that with pop up windows (or frames) for additional features (like an Equalizer) would be pretty nice.

I really want an app that synchronises handwritten note taking with audio, like the echo smartpen does. Then I could use it in meetings really effectively.
I think there is an ipad app that does this (grr...) but nothing for Android

Google Play Music, which comes on the tablet, is tablet-optimized. The tablet also comes with MusicFX, which is an equalizer, and it integrates with Play Music.

I'd hardly call Google Music tablet optimized, it scales well but doesnt use space very efficiently.

But yeah, I'd also like to see a better office editor. Quickoffice is a little too light on features to be taken seriously for more than minor edits.
The docks USB port does not recognize my camera and I do not like the way the tablet just puts your pictures in one big conglomeration. I would like a tablet that recognizes any digital camera and places your photos into files by date like a PC does. I use the tablet for work and I have to upload photos to my reports and then send the reports to my office. I have been able to type reports but it takes so many steps to get pictures from my camera into the tablet and then load them onto my reports that I am not able to do my reports quickly unless I am at home at my compute doing them.
I would love to get my hands on an Android clone of the airsketch app another teacher in my building has for his ipad.

I would like to have an app was functionally similar to Quicken. Personal financial tracking that was not web based. I have to carry a netbook to get that currently.

Biggest problem with Android apps right now is they aren't optimized for tablets. Most of the apps are designed for phones.
Yeah, but that should change as tablets get cheaper and more popular.

If you actually intend to do this (I REALLLLLLLY hope you do, its sorely needed) then I myself will plan on donating to the projects development as it goes along.

Right now I am putting the finishing touches on a project I hope to release this coming week sometime. It will be a tool specifically for Tablets and geared towards software developers mostly.
I am responding to you because the app I am about to release does support all of the typical hotkeys like Ctrl-V etc.
The biggest problem with creating an office suite for tablets is supporting all of the various file types that are out there (Office 2000/2003/2007 etc.) If it was just a matter of supporting one file type, and having the ability to import/convert from/to the other file types than it would be much easier. The problem is that would add an extra step for users to deal with.
I also think that Google will be releasing a very nice Office Suite for Android very soon. I think with the push for Chrome OS, and the already stated fact that Google plans to merge Chrome OS into Android points to that even more.

some apps require sd card to work (like this one or this one), because they put the data on sd card, so i want an app that have the abiltiy to use the internal memory as an "virtual sd card",
i know sd cards are not expensive, but i just feel like it's not necessary to use a sd card while there's still a lot of space on my device (like this one has 32 GB) and sometimes you forget your sd card or because of whatever reason you don't want to use your sd card.
so an app like that would be very useful (at least for me, i really need it )

I would like a virtual server running.
I have a particular need and idea to get some of my phone apps working on the tablet.
My idea is to create a virtual space something like Stick It! or Super Video, those app allow you to open a window and play your videos inside a hovering and movable window.
I took a measurement, and since owning an Asus TF300T with the keyboard dock, my tablet is mostly in landscape mode .
In landscape mode I can fit 3 windows of virtual space (or however you want to call it technically) of my phone in portrait mode.
So the apps on my phone where the developer is; for whatever reason, not interested in making those apps tablet ready, I can run those apps and see them the way they would look on the phone.
Because of the space that I measured, I can run 3 portrait phone apps at once. And just tap to switch between windows.
Does this sound like something that would benefit users?

There's a few apps I can think of off the top of my head. A gallery, a calculator & an app that brings all your social feeds together.
For the gallery, I'd like something similar to the stock gallery app except with the option to view it in list or folder view or something similar. Sorting options like sort by name, type etc and the ability to flick through them in that order would be good too.
For the calculator, heaps of buttons on the screen would be nice, and maybe they could be scrollable to reveal more buttons. Right now most calculators are just simple calculators with giant buttons lol. I'd really appreciate a scientific or graphic calculator on Android.
I'm also yet to find a decent tablet app that brings all your social feeds together. Something like the desktop Tweetdeck where you can have multiple panes would be great plus the ability to view profiles, messages, notifications etc.
I'd be willing to pay for any of these as long as their recently priced. (Not gonna pay $20 for a gallery lol)
If any of these are already on the market a reply or link would be appreciated lol, maybe I'm not digging hard enough.

I took a measurement, and since owning an Asus TF300T with the keyboard dock, my tablet is mostly in landscape mode .
In landscape mode I can fit 3 windows of virtual space (or however you want to call it technically) of my phone in portrait mode.
So the apps on my phone where the developer is; for whatever reason, not interested in making those apps tablet ready, I can run those apps and see them the way they would look on the phone.
Because of the space that I measured, I can run 3 portrait phone apps at once. And just tap to switch between windows.
Does this sound like something that would benefit users?

Sorry for double post but I'd love something like this. Like multitasking with 3 vertical apps running in phone mode would be beautiful. Maybe not a virtual server (do you mean online?), but just running an app in a phone version rather than tablet. That way we could have apps like Launcher 7 etc run on tabs. Or maybe have 2/3 of the screen having a browser and the other 1/3 of space occupying a phone app. Great idea man.
It would seem pretty hard to code or implement though.
