Maybe it's your Calendar. The Calendar kept syncing all the time for me on my Eris, Incredible, and now Thunderbolt. I just do a manual sync of the calendar after I make a change, and as soon as I see the time change, I uncheck the box and the circle stops spinning.

it's not. I unchecked it and it still was syncing. I even unchecked the box to totally stop background sync and it still syncs... =/
I get the same sync too. So annoying. I think thats why the phone is so slow.
I keep sense unchecked for sync. Seems to stop the constant syncing
Blundered from my Dunderbolt
If it's syncing your mail (it did this to me shortly after installing das bamf 1.4) go into each email account, menu -> more -> settings -> send and receive -> update schedule, and change the frequency for peak and off-peak to manual. even with sync set to off, it'd still sync all my email accounts. This means you'll have to manually check your mail though.
i know this probably isnt your problem but just incase... i tried to delete friend steam and i had that same problem

I'll give this a shot and see if it stops my sync problem. I mean, I'm getting 7hours of idle battery life sometimes. Usually slightly better but man it's rough.

What he said. Mine was constantly syncing too. After doing some fiddling, I narrowed it down to my Sense account.
It could possibly be a sync started, and even thought you've disabled Auto Sync, it might just be completing the sync. I turn on autosync, wait for the circle to show up, then disable it but the arrows stay. Just my .02
I updated to BAMF 1.5 and the sync issue went away for me. Still have sense checked and no friendstream.
I'm having the same issue but I KNOW its my primary Gmail contacts. (Under accounts & sync its spinning constantly). I noticed someone said that they deleted friend feed and I have also done that.
-Mobile via XDA Premium-
*edit*- reflashed the PS ROM and this time didn't delete the friend stream thing and now I have no issues. (I as well have sense sync checked and no issue with that either).
I've had the same issue on BAMF 1.5. I've found my Exchange constantly spinning until I go into the Sync options and then it would complete and stop. I thought it might have something to do with the security mod for Exchange mail so I installed the stock mail.apk I haven't noticed the sync sticking again since but I have noticed the Facebook contact sync will take awhile to complete. I have that set to sync once a day.

I am on the stock ROM rooted. I have a gmail, google apps, facebook app - Not HTC Sense (contacts only) and weather(3 hours) accounts setup. Something seems to hang while syncing and the sync icon stays on for a long time. This will cause emails to be delayed in showing notification.
I cannot figure out what it is that is causing the issue. I am also assuming this is not good for battery life. When it is hung like that I can look at each account on the accounts & sync tab and none of them show active syncing. If I cancel the sync and then sync now they will all sync and complete as expected.
Any one else seeing this? Any ideas on figuring out what account is causing it?
Mine does this too. I'm rooted, running Perfect Storm v1.0. I also did the 'Kernal/OS tweaks'. I'm not sure what caused it, but it's been doing this on and off for a couple days. I also had that ooVoo video app installed and when I uninstalled it, the sync indicator went away. (I had previously set the ooVoo sync to off). I'll post if I find anything.
I selected each account and disabled sync for each one and it still showed the sync icon later on. Do we know what all triggers the sync icon?
Any one else having this issue?
I was having the same issue. No idea what was causing it, I thought it was Facebook, but I froze it and it still was popping up. I did install advanced radio tools in settings from Jcase and leankernal from Imoseyon...
Yeah I am unrooted still and have this same issue with gmail delay. I can send an email to my self and watch it pop up almost immediately on my old eris connected to wifi but actually have to launch gmail to get the email on the thunderbolt. WTF!? Thats basic stuff. I cannot for the life of me figure out how it works fine on the granddaddy eris but not on the grandson TB. I have one personal gmail account and one gapps account. The only difference in the phones (other than the obvious massive power difference) is 4g so I wonder if this 1st gen 4g device wasn't polished enough back at the HTC labs?

I have 1 of each account type as well. What about other of you having this issue?
I've been experiencing this all day. Won't sync my g-mail accounts. I froze HTC Sense, could that be the cause?
EDIT: Unfroze sense and it still won't sync my g-mail. Syncs my contacts fine, just not my calendar or my e-mails. I deleted data and it did nothing except remove all of the e-mails that I had on my phone. Still wouldn't sync so I booted up my backup, and it STILL is not syncing. Please tell me I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.
I've been searching for a real answer to this question high and low... and yet the answer doesn't seem sufficient.
I am using the stock Gmail app (2.2). I'm trying to get push emails -- but it doesn't push, mostly because it doesn't seem that my account syncs very often even with auto-sync turned on. For example, I went to the Account window at 2:58pm, and it said the last sync was at 2:33pm, so I wasn't getting "push" email in the interim at all.
How do I consistently ensure that my Gmails arrive regularly and avoid this sync issue that obviously isn't a real "push"? I can't be getting emails on my phone 25 minutes after they're sent. And there's no way to set the frequency apparently, at least not with the Gmail app.
So does the lack of response mean that nobody knows the answer? Surely I can't be the only one this is affecting.
You are not alone ;-)
I am having the same issues today, (I flashed and unofficial version of gingerbread on my Desire yesterday)
With Android 2.2, I had no problems, I have no idea what the sync frequency was, but it seemed adequate. With Android 2.3, I am having the same kind of issues. My laptop knows I have new mail, but my phone doesn't.
If it is not possible to find out or update the sync frequency, then there are some gmail notifier apps in the market which may provide an acceptable solution.
Interesting, this was a problem for me always (2.1 and now 2.2). I thought it was attributed to the internal Android sync which seems to me to occur every 30 minutes (even though the "auto sync" checkbox should mean a little more frequently, no)?
What Gmail notifier apps would you recommend, and do they bypass the internal "Accounts and sync" settings? That's not the ideal solution at all, but I'll take it if it means my Android will check emails more frequently -- like as they arrive.
Hi,
I had the same problem after flashing CM7.
Under menu, accounts (Were you can see all accounts you sync with) press on Gmail account. There you need check if everything is activated.
On my phone the checkbox for sync gmail was missed. Contacts and calender where checked

Gmail is checked for me. My settings are correct. Like I said before, it's syncing every 30 minutes. That's not acceptable if my emails are really "push" as this doesn't seem like "push" to me.

Possibly a stupid question, but, on your main accounts and sync page, do you have "background data" checked? I have that checked and auto-sync checked and I get my G-Mail on my phone about 10 seconds after I get it on my desktop. Just asking because I don't see that mentioned anywhere here. BTW--I am running CM7.
I have Background data, and Auto-sync both ticked. I have now been waiting several hours for emails (that I know are waiting) to appear - they haven't, so I'm not even getting 30 minute responses.
The "Sync all" button has no effect either, so I guess that my problem is different
That is using 2 gmail accounts, both correctly setup - in theory.
OK, my problem is fixed. I switched off auto-sync, then I was able to manually sync everything: mail, calendar, contacts, books. I then switched auto sync back on, and now I am being notified of email from all sources in 2-3 minutes.
Yup, Background data is on. maersi - this might be my issue. Trying it and will see what happens.
Why is the last couple days my Gmail will not check for mew mail? Stock rooted with update done yesterday. I have to open Gmail and refresh and get all my mail I've been missing all day. Doesn't makes sense since it was working before the last couple days. I have 3 accounts setup to sync and none are working.

I'm also having issues with emails pushing to my Infuse. They show up on Sparrow on my Mac, but I have to manually check from my phone. I noticed this a couple days ago and again today.
My stock infuse is has also switched to only rerrshing gmail when I manually do it.
Have task killer, juice defender, sjd watchdog installed but I don't think that is the issue

I also have task killer, BUT, I do not have it running. Only have it in case I need to manually kill something.
One account had 1 email this morning, another I checked manually and one showed up. Not sure what to make of this.

Weird, my gmail is no longer updating automatically either. But it is working on my tablet.
EDIT: Well, I checked my account settings under Settings > Accounts and Sync and somehow my gmail, calendar and contacts magically got unchecked.
I had not heard that it does more bad than good, can you point me to a discussion thread on it?
I had someone else say the same thing about juice defender but did not get a explanation why either.

I had this issue on my Inspire. I went to GTalk and apparently, I was signed out. I signed back in (as I believe this is how it communicates with google servers and syncs) and mine has been syncing correctly since.

What the heck is gtalk? And whats it got to do with gmail refreshing on the phone. Ive never heard of gtalk !!! I googled it and came up a bunch of different things
All day today, no email. Manual refresh and a bunch of emails show up. This is annoying! I thought alot of my issues with the dell streak were solved by moving on but i guess i only moved onto different issues..... so annoyed

Google Talk. Google's chat service. It shows in your app drawer as "Talk". If you've ever noticed, when you access gmail on a computer, you're automatically signed into Google Talk. I was told a while ago in the past (when I owned a captivate) that Talk is what the phone may use to communicate with Google servers (makes sense), but not completely sure. By no means is gmail buggy or have issues because 99% of the time it syncs perfectly and without problems. My time period where it didn't sync was the first time it ever happened since I've had my Inspire (since February). My gmail has since returned to normal.
Do you have a task killer that's possibly interfering?
Are notifications enabled? (in gmail settings - "notify in status bar when mail arrives")

Still having issues with my Gmail syncing. I had no issues for the first few weeks I had phone, but now it is rare that push actually works. I have verified all settings are correct. I had issues on my iphone with email syncing also, so I changed to fetch emails every 15 mins on that to make it useful still. I don't see an option for that on the gmail app though.

That's really weird. The Gmail app has always worked for me, and very well at that (and on different devices). My GF's gmail app works just as well and she uses the Infuse. The only thing I can think of at this point is to go to the gmail application info page (via manage applications) and "clear data. Verify all of the settings again, reboot, and see what happens.

I do have advanced task killer but its not enabled at all. My gmail settings and notifacations are all set correctly.
Gtalk was logged in on my main account. I dont think that has anything to do with this problem though. I have 3 accounts setup and it worked fine for a little bit there before noticing the problem. If it was linked, i would have 3 loggins!
The gmail app has always worked fine for me also, UNTIL getting this phone! Sux

Well, good luck. Let me know what ends up working. Something will.
Ok,
I noticed my battery was being killed quite alot and i couldnt work out why, then my mate relised my phone is constantly syncing the whole time.
now i have already turned off auto-sync, gone through all my accounts, turned most apps to sync manaually and also got juice defender and canceled a few apps (like stocks) disabled to connecting.
Now i noticed every time i restart my phone, it comes up saying syncing in task bar at top. now if i go to accounts all the sync symbols are all greyed out (black shows its syncing). I cant seem to find what the is atcually syncing. But the button at the bottom says cancel sync, i press that and it all stops syncing.
My problem i have is i think its my google account which is stuck doing contacts, but i want to know why it doesnt it stop syncing, it almost gets caught in lop and stays on complete the whole time the phone is on unless i manually stop it??
Can anyone help me?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
EDITED - Also just noted that my enhanced email hotmail account is under as exchange, it could this that is stuck as sync. although when i cancel all syncing i still get emails?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
EDITED - Ok little more update, if i go to accounts and sync, cancel sync, Everything stops syncing. Then i go through like facebook, exchange, google and sync now, it comes up in task bar syncing and then dissappears afterwards when finished. So question is what is getting stuck syncing everytime i retsart my phone??
No one has any ideas??
Bump, someone surely might have some ideal?

I currently sync everything via g-mail (contacts, calendar, ect.), but I'm wondering if there is a way to limit when or how often this happens with auto sync on. There's really no reason I see that my contacts or calendar would need to update more than once a day, but they seem to by syncing constantly and probably negatively affecting my battery life.
Anyone have any advice?
Thanks.
anyone? I'd hate for my only option to be manually syncing from now on...
I'm pretty sure with Google it works on a push system. Gmail definitely works that way so this is only a guess as to other services. If I'm right it will only update if something needs to be updated. Say you're on your desktop and change a contact it will get pushed to your phone. Otherwise it stays idle. I just checked my accounts and the last sync I had was from last night.

You could use an app like Tasker to toggle data sync for your device with the interval you want. Although this will change all syncing for you device to be on the same schedule.

I just checked and everything except my gmail synced an hour ago with no changes made. I'll have to keep checking it periodically to see how often it's doing it.
Tasker seems overly complicated and I don't really want to pay for an app that I might not end up using for more than just this.
My mistake. I've looked back at my multiple Google accounts and various things like Gmail and calendar sync pretty frequently. But other stuff like drive and books were last synced last night. So long story short I can't help with your original question of how to change the frequency of syncs. Sorry about that.
You can always use Synker (free) from the Play Store to setup different sync buttons to sync the items you want. Its not really and automatic solution but saves battery by not using Auto Sync.
