Flash Nandroid Image from the phone

Is there a way to flash a nandroid back up image from the phone itself? My computer has been acting up and I'm unable to use fastboot at this point.

I would love to know this as well. I think JF mentioned that he was going to include that option (flash nand backup) in the recovery console but I dont think I've seen anything else about it.

I think the recovery "Flash nand backup" option is already there. Make sure you have HardSPL installed first though.

Step by step for the n00bs?

JF's allows you to create NAND backups from the phone.
Just boot in Recovery (Hold home and power)
hit alt-b to back up
hit back and home to reboot
AFAIK, you need to use fastboot on a computer to flash the backups back onto the phone.
the commands are:
(must have fastboot installed on system path folder OR the folder you will be working out of)
Have the Data.img, boot.img, and system.img copied from SD to a folder on HD
Boot holding camera and power (need to see skating androids)
connect USB
hit back to see Serial0 instead of fastboot (if not, you need to properly connect the device in device manager ie don't mount it!)
then open a command prompt to the folder where the imgs are
type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash system system.img
then reboot the device. Should be good to go

I have posted to the nandroid folder by for some reason when I do a back up and then try and restore it says all went well but when it reboots it gets stuck on the T-Mobile G1 screen. I have tried a fresh build of JF R33 and tried to back it up and then restore thinking it could be something I have installed but even a fresh install with out adding any apps does the same thing. If anybody has suggestions on how I can do a back up and restore with out it locking up.

I don't think that you can restore with a nandbackup as of yet. Maybe I'm wrong though. There is an easier way actually... if by chance you don't have access to a computer and get stuck with a looping android or boot screen or whatever (because of a bad update.zip, theme or whatever) I carry a spare 512mb sd card in my wallet. On this card I have a fresh update.zip (RC33) on it. So I just swap the cards out and do an update from there just like that. No problem at all.
OR
You can have it on your current SD card but just use scripts to do your updates. Granted it's a little more time consuming... but you have less risk of messing something up later on. Just don't delete your RC33 backup.
It also helps to have GScript to store the scripts in.

I think it's a lot easier then moving files around all the time and forgetting what that 8mb file is on your sdcard later on.

Randum, you are correct
I could be a noob but I can search and I can find the obvious (i.e. how to flash back images from PC) so I wouldn't ask for that. I thought someone actually found a way to do it all from the phone (which would be so nice, I don't have enough clearance to install my own stuff on the PC at work so I have to do stuff from the phone). Oh well....
Thank you all for the effort though, very nice that someone actually took time to write it out, at least for others who did not know how to do it from PC.

OMG yes i know im a newb but there is a first time for everybody for anything.
So i'm trying to unlock, root, install cwm and install custom roms but ive looked at all the instruction from many thread and a lot of them had missing steps
Anyways, i've downgraded from JB to 4.0.3, rooted, unlocked and now i'm trying to install CWM. So i installed android SDK and all tools, i've put recovery image in same folder as fastboot.exe, i've booted the tablet and selectied USB icon but wtf do i do now??
I'm basically here:

1) Install Android SDK
2) Download CWM Recovery image from the original thread and check the MD5 sum (don't skip MD5 check,is there to make sure the file is not corrupted)
3) Copy the downloaded file in the same directory as your fastboot.exe (unless you have /platform-tools in PATH then you can flash from anywhere)
4) Turn off your device and boot into fastboot mode (power on while holding volume down, then select the usb icon and hit volume up to confirm)

change directory to the folder the recover/fastboot is in, using the CMD on windows. So:
"cd C:\Users\Patrick\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
make sure the recovery is called "recovery.img" and that its in the "platform-tools" folder alongside the fastboot.exe, then run the commands:
"fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery recovery.img"
and
"fastboot reboot"

Yes, command line is in your PC. The location of the fastboot.exe located in c:\android-sdk\platformtools (if you install from sdk).
On your PC, open CMD and navigate to the above directory where fastboot.exe is. Make sure your recovery.img in also copied to this same folder. Now you can execute the fastboot comand:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot

I think it's easier for you to download Voodoo OTA root keeper to preserve root, then upgrade to JB, then use OTA root keeper to restore root. After this you can install TWRP recover by download goomanager from the play store and install it, once you have twrp, you're home free.
Currently you are on ICS, becareful if you use a wrong version of cwm you could brick your device. Many ppl installed ICS cwm version then upgrade to JB without the right version and they bricked.

when you are in the fastboot folder, you have to press control & right click inside the folder, and you will see the option to open a terminal.

If it makes you feel any better I had a heck of a time with this myself.
Once I realized I had platform tools in a folder on my PC desktop with the command prompt
in it I was able to flash.
Gotta say it wasn't easy to figure out in bits and pieces.

Thanks guys, you've been REALLY helpful! I completely forgot about the shortcut to open cmd in a folder, and i'm not sure if you were wrong or its because im on windows 8 but its ctrl + shift + right click
EDIT: now i get a problem, it do all this and i get "waiting for device"
i tried different USB ports, same deal...any ideas?

I'm having this exact same problem but changing USB ports is not working for me and I tried everything else. Would it help if I tried a different computer?

I don't mean to threadjack, but this portion of your post caught my attention.
I just swapped a prime for an infinity. I rooted, installed rootkeeper, preserved root, upgraded to JB and restored root.
Are you saying I can install goomanager and update recovery without unlocking via the Asus tool?
If so, sweet!

Root and Custom CWM recovery for VSD220

I got the device which is really nice, I rooted the first night, I then updated to version 1.1, lost root as usual but luckily my copy of CWM works fine for both versions 1.0 and 1.1.
If you are familiar doing this with android phones, just follow the same steps.
Use at own Risk
Download both files. Make sure they are complete and the file sizes match.
Save recovery.img to computer, and su.zip to VSD220,
Gain access to adb for your device,
go to terminal or command prompt and type "adb reboot bootloader",
and then enter.
The screen will turn solid black,
in the same terminal type "Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img",
and enter, make sure you are in the same directory as your recovery.img.
The recovery will flash quickly, when complete type "fastboot reboot", enter.
Your device will boot up,
make sure you have Su.zip saved on the VSD220 in the directory /mnt/external_sd/su.zip,
you must have an external sd card inserted,
you can confirm this with root explorer even without root.
In terminal type adb reboot recovery,
you should have a working CWM that will allow you to flash su.zip, and perform a nandroid backup, etc.
If CWM offers to block the stock recovery, accept it.
Otherwise you will need to delete or rename /install-recovery.sh and/or /system/recovery-from-boot.p.
Enjoy Root.

Can't seem to get "adb devices" to come up with anything. Using Android Composite ADB Interface for driver, no luck at all.
Any help on which ADB driver to use and where to download appreciated.

Sorry, was using outdated adb.
So got adb, flashed recovery.img, recovery flashed ok, rebooted...but now when I adb reboot recovery, it reboots and then stuck on green android with red triangle.
Any advice?

Ok, I worked it out now. But for others, the problem was that recovery image was being replaced with the original on the command "fasboot reboot".
So instead, immediately after typing "Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" I typed the following command "fastboot boot recovery.img".....AND only then did I get CWM which allowed me to flash su.zip from SD card.

I used Scripter Ver. 1.8 It work find. Don't forget to flash the right recovery.img and install su.zip. If you don't the script won't work.

has anyone gotten this to work lately? The device I'm playing with has 1.3 firmware on it. For some reason, I haven't gotten adb to work on this device in windows, and in ubuntu, I can adb reboot bootloader, and it goes to the black screen, but any fastboot commands, just sits there waiting for device. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I didn't know 1.3 was available. Is this a recent firmware? I checked a couple weeks ago.

Not sure, it's not my monitor, just looking at it for a friend. when I go to about, system update I see vsd220 system update 1.3 device system version : IMM76D.UI23ED02_VSC and same info under server version

Got it sorted out after hunting on google. it does work

problem with adb
Ok so i got the device being recognized on my XP machine. Really did not have to do much. Just pluged it in and everything worked.
On my Windows 7 machine when i plug in the device i only see the MTP installed and then see VSD220 in MY COMPUTER and can browse the files. I do not see it when i "adb devices".
1) USB debugging is on/enabled
2) Both laptops have Eclipse with latest ADB and ADT tools installed
Any suggestions as to what i can do? Anyone can copy over drivers that are working with your win7 machine?

Use at your own Risk - Acer DA220HQL
1. Download both files from the first Post (Thanks to sk8tingusmc).
Make sure they are complete and the file sizes match.​2. Save "recovery.img" to your computer, and copy su.zip to the Acer DA220HQL to "/mnt/external_sd/su.zip"
3. Press Windows Key + R to open the Command Prompt or Start > Run > cmd > Enter
4. At the Command Prompt change to the Directory with adb.exe in my case "C:\Temp\sdk\platform-tools"
Download SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html#download and extract in my case to C:\Temp (C:\Temp\sdk, C:\Temp\eclipse, and C:\Temp\SDK Manager.exe)​5. At the Command Prompt type "adb reboot bootloader" and hit enter.
The screen will turn solid black​6. At the Command Prompt Type "Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and hit enter.
Make sure you are in the same directory as your recovery.img.

I was wondering what ROM Version is your DA220HQL on (ES I think?) and will the instructions work in Linux or other *nix like systems?
The main problem I have is that I do not have any drivers so adb in Windows XP will recognize it. It is recognized under Ubuntu 12.04 for me.

There are a universal ADB Drivers for Windows.
Universal Naked Driver for example.

Well I got the ADB driver installed and I can use it! However I tried the root procedure and it failed to root.
When I was in the CW, the one thing it kept giving an error such as cannot mount sdcard. I checked the sdcard and su.zip IS on it, but the recovery could not locate it. I did try using the sideload method and it seemed to work, but when I rebooted and checked for root, it was not successful.
I tried this in both Ubuntu and Windows with the same result. I even performed a factory reset and tried again. And the same thing: no root.
Is there a timing issue with when to enter the commands?

So you were able to load CW but when you select "Choose from SDCard" it could not find su.zip? Or did you try to Mount your SDCard? Regarding the ADB Commands you can take as much time as you want. Have you used CW before?

I did try to mount the sdcard, but I got an error that said it could not mount the sdcard. That is when I tried the sideload method. When I boot up normally, the sdcard is there along with su.zip. I posted the info on my DA220HQL noting the kernel version. I went back to the post where you stated your kernel version. They are different. Mine is later than yours.
After going through everything several times, I though maybe I was doing something wrong. We went out of town so this is the first time I could sit down and check out the posts.

Thanks for all the help. I could not get this to root so we are sending it back to HSN. As a last ditch effort, I did a factory reset and tried again. And I got the same result. I do not think that the recovery while booted was able to "see" the device's partition at all, which is why I got the mount errors. In any case, I also have found that we can find it online for much less than what HSN charged us for it. I am still curious if anyone else was able to root this little gem.

cwm is not mounting my sdcard
android is recognizing it, but not in recovery
I'm thinking I shouldn't have installed that update

my best guess is we need a different recovery img, even though acer is the same as viewsonic
also there is no prompt to disable stock recovery being reinstalled
recovery touch is also kind of wack, have to tap below whatever I want to pick (which is also not consistent horizontally)
edit: going back to recovery, under mounts and storage, it doesn't appear to have permission to mount anything

looks like viewsonic released a rooted ROM on their support site

edit: wow looks like they even provided flashing tools and instructions...I just hope that this doesn't brick my unit (since its Acer not Viewsonic)...anyone else willing to give it a try?

[HOW-TO] Unlock and Root Moto G via Recovery/SuperSU

Unlocking the Bootloader is Required! This will erase all data and void your warranty!
Since all data will be wiped it's best to do this immediately after getting the phone. At least unlocking the bootloader.
I won't add a disclaimer, because if you trust some guide from some guy on the internet you should know what that means without being told explicitly.
For me the bootimage method posted on Modaco does not work and apparently others seem to have trouble as well (see the poll at Modaco). And since I couldn't find any guide here on XDA I thought I'd write one. XDA helped me a lot when I got my DHD, so maybe now I can help back.
This is based on soyd's guide at swedroid.se which I used to finally get my phone rooted after some unsuccessful attempts.
The guide is for Windows, but could probably be easily adapted to Linux/Mac by using the appropriate drivers/tools. I followed these steps to successfully root my Moto G (16 GB, german retail, Android 4.4.2, OTA 176.44.1).
Here're the neccessary steps:
Install Motorola and ADB Drivers
Unlock Bootloader
Flash Recovery
Flash SuperSU
Enjoy
Install Motorola and ADB Drivers
Do not connect your phone to your PC just yet.
If you already have ADB drivers and Motorola drivers installed, just skip this step.
Download these files:
Motorola Drivers
ADB Tools (thx to androidpit.info)
mfastboot.exe (only download that file from the G-Drive folder - thx to whoever uploaded it)
Run the MotorolaDeviceManager_2.4.5.exe you just downloaded and install it
Extract the two folders from adb-tools_treiber.zip
Open ADB-Treiber folder and run UniversalAdbDriverSetup.msi
Copy mfastboot.exe to ADB-Tools folder
Now this next part might be optional, but some things might not work without it and there's no real harm so:
Enable USB-Debugging
On your phone, open Preferences
Scroll all the way down to About this phone
Scroll all the way down to Build-Number
Tap 7 times on that entry
You'll get a message "You're a developer now"
Go back and open the new item Developer options
Check USB-Debugging
Connect your phone to the PC
Drivers will be installed and the phone will ask you to confirm USB debugging from that computer
Unlock Bootloader
There are probably lots of guides around, but to have it all in one place, here's yet another one:
!YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR WARRANTY AND ALL DATA BY UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER!
Switch off your phone
Hold Volume-Down and press and release Power to boot into Fastboot
A text screen should appear
Connect the phone via USB to the PC
Open a command prompt and browse to the ADB-tools folder you just created
Type:

You'll get five lines of characters, all beginning with (bootloader):

Copy all lines into one long string without the (bootloader) part!
You want something like 0A40040192024205#4C4D355631323030373731363031303332323239#BD00 and so on.
Open Motorola Unlocker Site (you need to sign-in)
Copy the string in the box at 6. and press Can my device be unlocked?
A Request my Unlock Key button should appear. Check I Agree to the legal stuff and press that button
Check your mail for the unlock key
In the ADB-tools folder type:

fastboot oem unlock [I]paste_your_key_here[/I]
The phone should reboot and greet you with a nice warning about you having lost your warranty.
Flash Recovery
Now that the booloader is unlocked you have to flash a custom recovery to be able to flash SuperSU.
Download the CWM image from this post. The file should be named something like recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.7-falcon.img. Copy the file to the ADB-Tools folder you created earlier and rename it to CWM.img
Your phone should still be connected to your PC and have finished rebooting and be in stock ROM.
In the ADB-Tools folder type:

The phone should reboot and the bootloader will come up again
To make sure all's working as expected type:

fastboot devices
You should get a response similar to:

To flash the custom recovery, type:

On the phone you might get a message about size mismatch, just ignore it. Now you have to enter the newly flashed CWM recovery. Take your phone and:
Press Volume-Down to scroll to the Recovery menu item
Press Volume-Up to select that item (yes, Vol-Up selects)
The phone will boot into recovery
Now is a good time to backup your system.
Press Volume-Down to scroll to Backup and Restore
Press Power to select that item
Press Volume-Down to scroll to Backup to /sdcard
Press Power to select that item
Backup will commence, once it's finished go back to the main menu and select Reboot, then confirm with YES
You phone will reboot into the stock ROM.
Flash SuperSU
Now you can finally flash SuperSU and be done with the whole business.
Download the newest SuperSU and save the file to your phone's SD-Card's root directory. The phone should show up as an MTP device in Windows file explorer.
In ADB-Tools folder type:

adb reboot recovery
The phone will reboot and once CWM Recovery has come up, use the Vol-Up/Down keys to scroll and Power to select
Select Install zip
Select zip from /sdcard
Select /0
You should find a file like UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip there.
Select that file, confirm YES and wait for the flashing to finish
Go back to the Main menu and select Reboot, confirm YES
The phone should once again reboot into normal stock ROM operation. To check if all went well, open the app drawer, tap on SuperSU and if no error message comes up... You're done!

I hope there are no mistakes anywhere in this guide and also that it might be helpful to some people...

I followed each step on this guide and i was using it threw android sdk but every time i select recovery on my device it says commands not found this is what i get in my comand prompt- target max sparse size error cant load recovery.img

I had the same problem at first. When you copy and paste the code on the website it put spaces between the code. There cant be any spaces then it will work. Hoped this helps XD

Great guide, I used it to root my Moto G I got today but I had problems with flashing the Clockworld recovery. It simply would not work, said error. But I tried TWRP and it worked. But I also named it recovery.img and used your command but replaced CVM.img with recovery.img. Got rid of ALL of the bloatware. I was stuck at first because I didn't start the command promt inside of the adb tools folder.

Recovery issue
Guys I had a similar issue while flashing the cwm.
When I flash it in the first boot it works, I can enter in the interface and can create a backup or flash one, but after a reboot it do not enter again. I tried entering via fastboot -> Recovery and received the dead android icon with the "No command" message.
Tried installing via PlayStore and had the same result, even with the TWRP.
Any ideas ?

BUGS:
1- adb shell command needs to be sent before system partition is mounted or it will give an error, after doing adb shell you can mount system and do all the modifications you need.
2- You cant flash any img on twrp it gives an error, im trying to fix.
3- Backups do work, but everytime twrp restarts, the device name seems to change (which means that on /TWRP/BACKUPS/devicename/backupsinside/ changes every reboot so you have to go get the backup inside the old devicename folder and put on the new devicename folder).

Im leaving an unsecured boot image because system seems not want to boot android if anything seems changed. So please if system does not boot after flashing twrp/rooting, flash the unsecured boot img on fastboot

C:\adb is where my adb and fastboot commands are.. on the downloaded files from Step 1 only the SuperSU zip is needed on the tablet so that you can flash it later on with twrp, the rest you leave on pc and use fastboot to flash TWRP, unsecured boot image, etc...

make sure you didnt put a folder inside the adb folder instead of the actual file and make sure your writing the right name of the file..

also its not unsecboot, the name i added on this thread was just so it would be faster, the name is unsecuredboot.img and not unsecboot.img i guess ill have to edit that in order for people following the tutorial by line dont make these mistakes..

If you flash stock rom, i think you have to reinstall stock recovery, the rom itself already brings stock boot.. after flashing stock recovery it should boot since no modifications have happend

Hi i am not so sure how to execute those info in my head and act on it so can anyone teach me ? how to root my Predator 8 GT-810 Android 5.1
i saw the instruction i dk how do i Unlock Bootloader (Fastboot) i search all over google and i dont really got the solution to the question so anyone can teach me ? and "4. Open up command prompt and navigate to the directory where fastboot.exe is located." do i extract the whole file i downloaded into my Acer predator 8 or ?... im stupid sorry ...

On step 4 You need the fastboot files, (adb & fastboot) just search how to install adb and fastboot drivers, choose the directory where to install them and place the needed files inside that folder and open a command prompt on that folder so you can flash the files.

ir I tried finding how to install fastboot driver on Google all showed me downloads links must do survey or download or purchase item to unlock the download files ... So I don't trust it so I kept searching "how to unlock fastboot Acer predator 8"
So for ADB I can search on Google and install it on my tablet ?

Yes, and after you unlock the bootloader, you put the necessary files in adb folder and flash them according to the stepts

Hi Ruben Craveiro is this the correct way ? i plugin usb cable into Predator 8 but it says its waiting for device is it the correct way ? after typing those Commands i go over to recovery mode to install SU from there then restart and its rooted ?

That means adb drivers arent corrently installed, but i can see you have the folder with adb, all you have to now is download this(drivers): http://dl.adbdriver.com/upload/adbdriver.zip
Extract and open the software eith the tablet plugged in, it should tell of drivers is installer properly or not, and if not you can install, after installing it should work on the cmd the commands..
