What is it like?
For now is 2 short
Waiting to see this myself, but truth be told, I had horrible battery life on my other Android phones, G1 and Nexus One
My nexus s has great battery life
Nexus S
I'm sure we wont know for a week or two because the batteries take some time to get used to cycling . I hear the o2x gets a day-a day and a half and they have stupid lg bloat processes in the background as well as crappy email services
I think it will take 1-2 weeks before we can fully test how long battery life is. Initial battery life out of the box is expected to be bad. We will need some charge-discharge cycle first to fully calibrate the phone's battery.
I expect batt life to be bit better on g2x than stock O2x cause it has less bloatwares and it is running on stock android froyo.

I am quite impressed with the battery life so far, and coming from a Nexus S that says a lot. I'm going on 14.5hrs my first day of full use (light to moderate, I was working all day) and have 23% left. I wish it had 2.3 so I could post a graph for you...oh well.

I use titanium to freeze bloatware. I did not delete them to allow OTA updates - if ever 2.3 or 2.4 show up.
It very depend how u use your mobile, if I dont play games at all just call and text plus some weather updates trought wi fi or gsm, phone hold for me up to 3 days, but is very hard to dont play games on it (phone not rooted, standart lg soft 10b)

mission complete. i laughed lol
Just ordered mine
I hope its better then my Nexous one (last all day easy)
Second full day of usage on my G2x. It did not make it though the whole day. It is miles ahead of the Nexus One, and EVO (which was garbage). However, it definitely cannot compete with the Nexus S in this department. Only time will tell how much is hardware and how much is 2.3.3.
I have a feeling most of it is software. On my G2x the majority of the battery is consumed by Cell standby and Phone idle, as with all other pre 2.3 devices I have used. With my Nexus S the Cell standby and Phone idle use much less battery which I would assume is attributed to software improvements. The display uses most of the battery (and the display is very efficient since gingerbread has a dark interface with the NS samoled)
I don't have specific numbers handy but would be more than happy to post some if anyone is interested.

What's the proper way to do this? No instructions out of the box...
The first two days, the batter life was horrible. Once the battery dies, and was charged a couple of times it got better. I also used setcpu to underclock which probably helped a little.

I did not know this. How does not having some apps prevent OTAs?
while using set cpu is anyone having a issue trying to select the scaling governor? its not highlighted on my g2x so i could put it on demand!

I really hope so. Even with custom ROMs, i am not seeing a major improvement in battery life. Phone looks very pretty though.lol
Ive been reading about the nexus Gingerbread update.. and the reaction has been mixed so far.
I'm not understanding everyone's issue with battery life.. Even stock.
I am running the seido 1600mAh battery but its only a tiny bit bigger so..
Yes it probably will. Gingerbread has features etc that will make it better. However, we will not see that until gingerbread kernel source is actually released from HTC. CM7 will be using the kernel from 2.2 until then.

A custom rom won't help battery life that much. What you need is a custom kernel and to tweak setcpu settings. I'm getting much bettery battery life on the 1.5 ghz oc kernel running @ 1.4 and 300 mhz with screen off then I was stock

Custom ROMs will help when we get closer to AOSP. Right now we are just kind of fading out Sense but, taking it out completely should help a little.
But getting back to what you said, right now, custom Kernels are the number 1 way to save battery.

I don't understand how people think just because the Froyo kernel source came out that we should all be getting 3 days out of our battery now. The INC I had wasn't giving constant great battery life until about 6 months after I got it. It will take time for the battery life to improve. And these roms aren't highly modified at all, it hasn't even been a month, we are all learning about this phone and what it can and can't do. Give it some time and you will see battery life improve, it's not like GB will drop and everything will magically get better.
I don't think battery life is too bad. Better then my old EVO with a larger battery. But I suspect that is because of Sprint's network problems. Made that poor EVO work way too hard for data.
I flashed my kernel recently and created a setcpu profile for 245mhz min/max when the screen is off using "smartass" governor and over all i am using the smartass governor max cpu 768mhz. Battery still kinda crappy. Even just playing mp3s the battery drains fast. Ive been keeping the phone in exclusively 4g and now i am trying 3g. I get very solid 3g/4g coverage in NYC. I donthave many apps running in thebackground. Just have my google sync on and i think facebook... thats about it. Also keep my screen around 20-30%. Ive also done a few full discharge cycles on the battery info and deleted the battery from the CWM recovery menu.
**P.S.- Sorry if i am sounding impatient. I am new to the Android camp. I came from the iphone 3g.iPhone 4 camp. Battery is something i never really had to worry about. Just sucks i have to be more proactive to make my battery last me through the day. Luckily i have access to chargers everywhere... but i dont always want to have my phone plugged in.
Same here, came from the blackberry camp where 3 days per charge is normal. My battery life isn't bad to start with (9hrs) and is only getting better with the new kernel. Still, i think every little bit helps so i hope gingerbread comes sooner rather than later.
In all reality. The screen is what takes up most of the power. I think for me, typically the screen is around 60 - 70% of my battery power. This is a big 4.3 in screen. Having chargers is handy, and the faster the charger, the less you have to have it plugged in. Are there any reliable 2 amp chargers out there?

Ya. Oc kernals usually undervolted and have other battery tweaks. Its setting run real low with screen off. I have my brightness kinda low. Screen off thirty seconds but that's about it. I work in 4g area live in 3g. 4g is tolerable now with this kernel
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Smartass is still kinda broke from what i can tell. I found luck using undervolted kernels specifically the 1.2ghz kernel from DAS BAMF and Adrynalyne's kernel too
gingerbread seems to have very good power improvements. idle power when phone is asleep seem to be extrremenly low, around 3mA. this is very good and will help you guys when you get GB.
possibly a parallel...
One year age, I bought the HD2 on T-Mobile. Guess what? Poor battery life, etc. Then the update came through and battery life was BETTER. Today, I now am with Verizon and the Thunderbolt. Battery life could be better. And Android 2.3 will be released soon to the Thunderbolt. Will that help battery life. Hope so. But if not, I can get a spare/bigger battery. Admitted, we have no 4G in my home area, so I do not know what impact that has, but my battery life seems like it is improving just because of the charge/discharge cycling that happens normally. And yes, I'm also aware that both are HTC devices but running different OS's, but an update is just that, an update.
I think that it's sad that HTC put in such a low capacity battery and I don't think software optimizations will cure a poor hardware decision. A true OEM 1600 or 1700 mAh battery will make some improvement which seems doable. My Droid 1 had significantly better battery life. If you use 4G as I do, it drains the battery quickly. I use my TB like a Blackberry for email, checking one account every 10 minutes which is far less than Blackberry. Still, using 4G for this, music for my 30 minute commute in both directions and a few other things puts me at below 50% battery life by the work day afternoon. I don't know why HTC put in such a small battery and I'm guessing it has some connection with why they had so many extended batteries to sell on launch day. I have one. Makes the phone noticeably larger, not as bad as I thought although unnecessary... but the phone does last a long time and no worry about battery life.
Android 2.3 is supposed to come to us in Q2, so in the next 2 months. It will more than likely have sense, so it will therefor still drain battery.
My girlfriend pulled 36 hours yesterday on her TB, completely stock. She stayed at a relative's house who didn't have a micro usb cable, so she couldn't charge it. I am pulling a consistent 22-24 hours. IDK what you guys are doing with your phones, but stop it.
I think a big issue with many people's battery life is this is their first smartphone, or first android device. You are going to use it much more than you need to... lol
Wow 36 hours that's unreal I can pull up to 16 hours Max

Are you in a 4G area? I think the 4g is what really eats us alive.
Here are the settings I'm running on CM7 to get amazingly bananas battery life (with the display being on for about 5 hours!)..
1. Conservative governor: 245mhz - 1017mhz in CM7 settings
2. Install the 'BatteryCalibration' app from the market. This app caused the single biggest improvement for me after having flashed so many roms and never calibrating the battery. If you've calibrated it before though, I don't think it'll be very useful for you.
3. Install 'NoBars' from the market to automatically turn on airplane mode when you have no service. (This might be useless to some of you if you always have a signal; Very useful in NYC subway though)
4. Use a 2G toggle widget to have the phone only use the Edge connection when you only need it to receive calls/ texts and don't need the high speeds. I use the toggle widget in the CM7 notification bar. HUGE battery saver.
Give these a shot and let us know how they work for you
I've reached the end of my day and here are my final stats..
Mmy display has been on on over 5 hours now and I have 5% of the battery left. Seems more than good enough for me. Hopefully it will be for some of you too

Question: It's cool that your display was on for 3 hours, but what did you do as far as app usage??
If you did use your phone "a heck of a lot" wouldn't some apps like "internet" "maps" or something show up on the battery use %'s???
For example, currently, other than phone idle, cell standby, voice calls and android, there's also internet, mail, maps, and other apps that I used today alot.
Good observation. I have no idea how android chooses which apps to show on there, but I think it depends on the ROM? I remember on Iced Glacier cell standby would barely use 5% of the battery and on CM7 it uses >40% consistently. Idk.
Maybe what those apps used up here was nothing compared to the display, wifi and phone idle time.. Just a guess.. But I did use the browser and xda app and listened to music via the Rdio app running in the background several times throughout the day, and sent multiple texts and have had my wifi on for about 5 hours now. I can't really find a menu that would show these statistics except in the Spare Parts app, and here you go..
I got 17 hours just yesterday with 9% left with moderate to heavy use (texting, web browsing and ps1 emulation).
I didn't do anything besides use faux's kernel with the smartass govenor. I have the max speed overclocked to 1.8 as well...
Nice. I just got over flashing new kernels for a while since the stock CM7 one has everything functioning perfectly and new kernels would improve on something but mess up something else in my experience.
I can't seem to find a 2g toggle widget that works with Royal Glacier. (one touch, I've found a few that take you to settings) When I was running Royal Ginger I would always use the one that came in the notification bar.
Wifi status is also a good app to remind the forgetful to turn off wifi when they leave the Area.

i Pulled my Phone off the Charger this morning @ 7:20pm EST. Now it is 3:13 EST. and i've got ~50% left. So thats what like. 7 hours
neidlinger tap that 'screen on' tab and lets see how long your screen was actually on for?

Unless I'm missing something, the 'BatteryCalibration' app won't increase your battery life. It will just help to get a more accurate reading of your battery level.
I've played around with different roms and kernels. And yes, they do have a small effect on battery life, but not all that much.
Here's my tip for battery life. Get on ebay and buy one the of the cheap packages from Hong Kong with 3 batteries and a standalone charger. Like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/3x-New-1500mAh-Battery-Charger-HTC-Mytouch-4G-Merge-/290556738794?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item43a687fcea
I bought a similar package a few months ago and now I never have battery problems. Nor do I have to take a chance on wearing out my micro-usb jack like I've seen happen on a lot of other phones.
Maybe. All I know is my battery increased dramatically after running that app once.
I measure battery life by how many hours I am able to keep my display on before it dies rather than how long after it comes off the charger (like nedilinger does). My battery used to die after about 3 hours of the display being on. Now it consistently lasts 5 hours.
Anyway, I was just trying to let others know what I did to get a really good battery life on my phone thinking it might be helpful. Apparently that's not appreciated. Thanks tho.

simple way to get awesome battery life without any extra steps is to install RoyalGlacier 1.6, that's all. A couple days ago I ran my phone for one and a half days before charging it again, and it still had 14% battery left. RG is pretty much a polished version of CM7, runs blazing fast and smooth.

Better than what's reported under CM7. The battery life I posted above was on RG.
you say you don't sacrifice 4g but you admit you have a 2g/edge widget?
To me "not sacrificing 4g" means not ever turning it off, maybe i'm mistaken
I had battery issues, I'd have to charge it mid day else it would die. Juicedefender helped a bit (claimed to do 1.7x battery life) but I uninstalled it, rooted the phone, and uninstalled a bunch of stock apps
For some reason now my battery lasts a very very long time, don't know how or why that is. I also admit I don't use it as heavily as some people, but my habits have not changed and I did have to charge it mid day (like i said) even with little usage

Obviously, it's hard to say without describing how I use my phone, but I get probably 10-15 hours of medium-high usage. I probably get about 4-5 hours of talk time. I'd say the Chinese ebay batteries probably last 80-90% as long as the OEM battery. Quite decent considering the price.
My earlier thoughts about the BatteryCalibration app could be wrong. I don't really know all the details about how Android battery calibration works. I just assumed that it simply learns about all the bad spots in your battery so that your phone doesn't instantly jump from 80% to 30%. I also assumed that the phone would die when the battery had no power left, as opposed to when it says 0%, but maybe that's not the case. Regardless, if it helps you, more power to you and I appreciate you sharing the app. I didn't mean to come off as an unappreciative ****. If I did, sorry bout that.
So from a GR-12 standpoint I must say gingerbread handles just about everything better. with the random odd bugs here and there... so far gingerbread is already showing some awesome stability and speed. much kudos out to the devs here! You guys do a great job and from what I've seen here so far... you put up with maybe one too many ignorant rude individuals. BUT! I would like to extend my thanks to all you devs and helpful members here... and for making my switch to android not only an informative one but a great experience all together.
So... anyway. loving gingerbread (GR-12 mainly). After loading up launcher pro almost every single bug or issue has vanished. seems the twlauncher has some deep seated issues lol.
Looking forward to the new releases!
I totally agree, Ive been running GR-12 for a couple of weeks now and its silky smooth. Oh and im also using launcher pro for the same reasons. lol
A different launchere makes all the difference doesn't it!? After I realized that every time I had a snag or crash it was "twlauncher"... I figured I'd try replacing it. and sure nuff... Awesomeness came spilling forth. Honestly haven't had a issue since. (well I flashed the kc1 modem which gives me the gps performance I need... ).
Outside of my own retarded moment bricking my phone while flashing it... Tearing through 3 old power supplies to get the right combo of resistors to build my own jig.... lol! But all is well that ends well.
What's everyone else's setup / experience with ginger on their cappy's?

significantly better than froyo (at least for me). There are some people with a battery drain issue but I'm thinking its an app thats not optimized for GB. I dont think its a ROM or KERNEL issue - but I'm not a dev so I can't back my statements up.
Both battery and gps are better on GB. Gps is wayyy better...

Gingerbread has been horribly buggy. The battery life is just plain awful, it's laggier than 2.1, and it killed my dog.

Actually, GR-12 makes my Captivate run as smooth as my Inspire. I got about 12 hours heavy usage with the screen almost max.

that's a loaded question because it depends on MANY factors:
-signal strength in your area
-3g vs wifi connection
-general phone use (phone calls, sms, games, etc...)
For me, the phone lasts MUCH longer. I can go about 20-24 hours until I need to charge again. Thats with medium use and wifi connection 80% of the day. On standby, my phone usually drains 1% - 2% an hour.

That is good to know. I will keep that in mind.
So far on continuum its been rather smooth, using go launcher btw.
Battery life is bad though. Less than 8hrs with moderate to heavy usage. I need to fully recharge two to three times a day now.
On froyo I'd get 12-15 hours with similar usage.
Gps works fine, but then mine did on froyo before.

I'm experiencing battery drain, GR, Continuum and Mosaic, I leave wifi on and after 9 hours (fully charged, battery stats reset, standby mode [literally 0 use, I was asleep]), cell standby had used 33%, wifi 30%, .... I had 52% battery left.
GB is smoother, for sure, once kernel development ramps up for GB (JVB, JVH and JVO, ... JV#) i'd expect to see more tweaks include power and performance.
If you need battery life and don't want to risk flashing GB, wait.
battery life *IS* going to depends heavily on how much you use your phone. It's hard to compare battery life amongst people that cannot stand next to each other and compare phones because describing "heavy" use is different for everyone. My version of heavy is not the same as the next person.
the only real determinant of battery life that we can all use as a comparison is to see how much battery drain you have on standby or to run some sort of application that runs videos (ie. benchmark apps) because we can all do that. If your phone drains 2x as fast as mine on standby, then we have a problem with a rogue app or something else.
(clarification: I dont mean to use a benchmark app to see the results of the app itself. I just mean to run something on the phone to drain the battery quicker and view the battery life at the end of the test).
I've always experienced better battery life with Froyo, and I use my phone every single day for reading PDF's, listening to music, texting, calling and surfing the web. Maybe Gingerbread has better standby battery life, but when getting a "full" use out of my phone I've always lasted longer on Froyo builds.
Ok so GB is up and running since yesterday at about 5:30pm.
The phone seems snappier and quicker and has a different look to it, but the one thing I was hoping for was better battery life and it seems the same if worse.
I have had any reboots yet, but I'm not willing to say that the issue has been fixed because I don't get them everyday.
If this isn't the official TMO/LG fix, do you guys think there is still a chance they will address battery life because they didn't do anything IMO.
I have to agree. My battery life is no better then it was from FroYo. This better not be the official release.
My battery life is way better on this stock GB than on the stock FROYO. Maybe you have an application that is persistently hogging resources?
I think you may be right. I just noticed that TeleNav was stuck in a continuous restart. I never even opened that POS software. Cannot wait to root with SuperOneClick.
Yeah android as a whole OS needs to release a major update concerning battery life, its easier said than done though the hardware is different on every phone.

Just another quick piece of advice. If you are coming from a different ROM and/or different kernel let the battery charge to 100 then unplug from charger > Boot into CWM > advanced > Wipe Battery Stats
Exactly, which is why the manufacturers really need to fix battery life for each of the phones they put out.
I really want to wait for ice cream sandwich, but if I get the chance to get an iphone4 I'm going for it, even though it might be considered a downgrade specs wise, the apps, and better battery life make up for all the losses.

Why wouldn't you wait for the five to come out?

Well I don't really have cash to spend on a iphone5, if I can do an even trade for the 4 I will.

I decided to use the rooted version that came about yesterday afternoon and let it fully charge overnight and I've had it off my charger for 2hrs. My battery got worse, I'm now at 85% and all I've done was watch 2 short videos and came here a few times for a few mins. Also downloaded the newest cm7 nightly.
Overall I'm not impressed with the work LG put into this, seems like this was the CEOs teenage stepsons work so he could have his devs work on their other pos electronics.

A friendly word of advice. I came from the iPhone4 to the G2x. Even with the shortcomings this phone has had the iPhone 4 will only make you want your G2x back. Getting caught up in Apple's iron fist of control over your device sucks. I have had every iPhone since the original release. The battery life is decent on the iPhone 4, but not any better in my opinion than what I am getting now since I flashed a different ROM. So from experience I can say that is not a good thing.
I am running CM7 with faux's kernel on my G2x. since doing that I have had great battery life, no re-boots and no other issues. If you haven't done that it's worth a try.
Yeah, now with ios 5 u are no.longer tied down to iTunes, I have tried just about all the roms and kernel combinations, the best I got was 15 hours with heavy optimization that was running cm7 with faux oc UV kernel with set CPU profiles and juice defender, basically I disabled every feature that made my phone a smartphone, if I recall when I had an iPhone 3g (and the 4's battery has to.be better) I never needed to carry around my charger and I could actually play games, I just dropped from 100% to 90% in 27min, cmon, this is running the phone how it was made to run with gb rom from yesterday and bloat removed w root at 20% brightness.

Whenever I want serious battery life, I just turn on wifi calling. Since it disables the cellular radio completely I get way, way, way more battery time out of it. Just the other day I had the phone off the charger for 18 hours and was at 40% battery life. This on on the stock rom.
I manage cell phones and can confidently say that even the iphone users are unhappy with their battery life, as is nearly every smartphone user coming from a dumbphone or a blackberry.
Oh and I forgot to add, with ios5 you still are forced to use itunes for all of your music and syncing, you just don't have to physically hook up the cables. It's like a wireless tether sync.

Apple has absolute control over everything software and hardware, allowing for ultimate optimization. Add that to the massive battery and lack of true multitasking and you have a phone that will last a long time.
What you describe should not be happening though, and I suggest trying juice defender and reading on battery saving tips for android. But understand that phones are getting more powerful, while battery tech stays the same.

I've done all that, today I'm gonna use my phone the way it was meant to be used, I'm thinking of buying a 3500ma battery off of eBay for $10.

I don't think I do. I have had this crappy battery life since release day. I tried the factory reset stuff and ran with no apps. Once I noticed it didn't improve battery life I put the apps back on.
To me it is just the cell stand by/phone idle stuff always killing my battery.
I would love to use the wifi calling, but it didn't work very well at my house (no option to do so at work).
For people with battery life changes....Did you just upgrade to GB via the ROM available, or did you use the LG Tool that also updated basebands?
My phone is great on Froyo with the exception of battery life. I had read GB has better battery life. Trying to determine if changing the basebands will also help.
Any advice?
If you think you have bad battery life, my friend has an HTC Thunderbolt he tells me he only gets 4 hours of battery life... Takes him 6 hours to charge to full, 10 AM disconnects from his charger and at 2PM he has less than 10% left.
I get less than four hours if I don't turn off the screen, and constantly use my phone with brightness at 25%.

I used to get about 10 hours from my battery, i've installed no new apps or anything in the past few days and all of a sudden i can't even get 6 hours out of it, this is on an Anker 1900maH battery. I wouldn't mind if i'd been using the phone heavily but it's just been sat on the table, as usual it just says that the display has been using the most power.
Any ideas why this has happened all of a sudden?
How were you only getting ten hours from an Anker? How much screen on time?
Kill off the HTC stuff.
HTC stuff and syncs.
custon rom , htc's rom is very poor. Have faith in our devs here, they will do you proud.
Why are you guys assuming he's on stock?
I've always been interested in rooting one of my phones but i'm just worried i'd end up bricking my phone, don't have much luck with these things you see haha.

because Stock = **** battery life.
I don't get it, I get great battery life
I get around 2 full days on an Anker with light usage. I can easily charge every other day. I unplugged this AM at 9:00, I have 15h 37m on battery now and have 75% left. I leave wifi and 4g and gps on all the time. I did turn off the HTC stuff and replace launcher with Launcher Pro. I've rooted it, but always got great battery life since the first week.
So why do I get about the best battery life I've ever had on any Android (G1, N1, and the Sensation) while folks here get much worse?

Yes, I have gmail and k-9 (imap) on push. But they take hardly any battery according to SystemPanel (which is awesome btw).
Have you tried using Battery Calibration from the Android Market?
