I just got a message saying there is an update available. I told it not to do it. I do not want RC30 because it gets rid of root.
However, the other side of me is tempted to see if telnetd and all the other goodies are still there.
I'm also very tempted to install it to see if it removes root access. I hope someone who doesn't care about root access tests this out and reports back soon, because my curiosity is about to get the better of me.
It won't stop prompting me and I don't think I have the heart to keep saying no.
Look on your phone, and see if there is a file named "update.install" in the /cache folder. Or maybe in the /cache/recovery folder. If so, would you mind grabbing it off your phone and posting it somewhere?

The only file of interest in the /cache directory is named, signed-RC30-from-RC29-fat.1582cace.zip. From this I'm assuming it's going to update my phone to RC30. I've made the file available here in case anyone is curious.

It did it.
just as I get home to catch up on the "jailbreak" and start doing it I get an
error while connecting to server, "connection refused"
error while receiving from server null

It has more than just that fix. It patches quite a few other packages on the phone... for what purpose? I don't know.

yes
tried pterminal and terminal emulator
netstat shows the ip
but telnet from pc fails to connect failed on port 23 and the port shown on netstat
I also tried the steps koush put up but still fail
granted I'm no linux/unix pro and I just installed cygwin a couple days after the connect bot app came out; so I may be doing something wrong
Does google check in the new change into the source tree before they push a update?
In addition to jailbreak fix there is a battery fix as well and a few others according to androidcommunity.com.
Well I finally got tired of clicking no and decided to go ahead and perform the update. After it finished, the phone rebooted and instead of booting up, the phone simply displays a '!' icon with a triangle around it and hangs. I'm not taking this as a good sign. I tried removing the battery but that didn't help.
I really hope the update didn't just brick my phone.

When you're at the screen with the ! and triangle, Try pressing home+back (maybe several times). It should reboot, and hopefully boot back up normally.

No dice. The phone reboots but still hangs at the error screen. The only thing I can think that might have caused it is that, while playing around, I set a root password and forgot to clear it before the update rebooted the phone. Who knows. I guess I'll call tmobile and see what can be done.
edit: I should mention that pressing alt-w to wipe the phone does not work either. It still returns to the error screen. I'm talking to tmobile tech support now and the original tech said that 'they were informed that a small number of users might experience this problem with the update'. I'm on hold waiting to talk to an android tech now. My advice to everyone who's played around with adding any extra files to /etc to hold off on upgrading for now. I'll report back with the results of my call with the android tech.
Now they're saying they would like to exchange the phone. Problem is the g1 isn't in their replacement program yet.
Aaaand they're out of stock so it's going to be at least 2 weeks.

Disturbing news, especially as I'm wanting to install a modified rc30. What exactly did you change?
I was playing around with trying to get dropbear to work and in the process I created some files in /etc (passwd, shadow, groups, etc). As well as creating a new regular user, I also added a password to the root account and carelessly forgot to remove it before applying the update. I'm only guessing here but I wouldn't be surprised if the new root password is what did it. The system does not have one by default and I wonder if that caused it to hang, waiting for a password to be entered while booting.
On a brighter note, I persisted and was able to get them to send me out a new phone immediatly. This has the added benefit of possibly fixing the loose-screen/creaking problem that I, like many others, am experiencing with the phone.
I'm wondering if I should try manually applying the update from the SD card while I wait for the new phone to see if that solves the problem. I probably should have tried that before calling. I'm hesitant to do that now, however, since if it does fix it, I'm not sure how tmobile would react to me returning a perfectly working phone.

I don't get it. The update should restore whole /system folder, isn't it? /etc is actually a symlink to /system/etc, so, it should be restored too and passwd file successively removed.
Otherwise, I don't see any problem to keep the root access! Since /system is mounted without nosiud (any changes in RC30?), just keep a copy of shell with chmod 4777 somewhere there... where it wouldn't be removed by update, as it keeps passwd, and that's it.
Please, tell me where am I wrong, cause I definitely should be wrong somewhere.
PS: BTW, what was the progress with dropbear? I actually tried to make it work too, creating passwd etc, but no success...

Unlike the RC29 update, the RC30 update doesn't actually do a complete wipe and restore of the /system folder. It patches a number of files (which will fail if any of them have been modified), and does a recursive chmod on the entire /system directory to clear any suid bits.
I had a friend root my phone and I know if I want to flash a new build I rename the file update and drag it to my android folder then restart the phone a certain way and press alt s to load the build.
I love my g1 and the 1.5 build Im using but I cant get any further because Ive scoured the internet and these threads and I just cant figure out what all of this computer jargon means and I dont understand how anybody does know without taking classes in it.
I think I should make a nandroid backup and partition my sd card to run apps but good lord what does this mean (regarding nandroid)???---

No offense intended, but I don't think you should root your phone or carry out any of the procedures outlined in the developer forum. Following instructions to the letter is important when you are performing unauthorized and unsupported hacks, and most of those instructions assume an intermediate-to-advanced level of computing understanding.
As far as "where you learn it", I assume it varies from person to person. Although in nearly all cases, you learn it slowly by absorption when you are immersed in computing culture. Eventually if you lurk enough and see a word enough times in a particular context, you gain an understanding of what it means without being explicitly told.
You learn as you read through forums and threads and asking questions. If you're lucky, someone will explain it to you.
A script is like a programming language that controls a software application.
Nandroid is a tool or script you can use to backup your phone. It takes a bit of knowledge to restore from the backup though and requires a separate thread

Can't help you with busybox/adb/recovery image right now.
FAT32 and EXT2 are just file type partitions. Think of a hard drive as a box. You put a divider cutting the box down the middle to split it into 2 compartments so each compartment can store something different. That's essentially what you do to a SD card when you create a FAT32 and EXT2 partition.
I learned all this by totally screwing things up, then reading, and reading some more. Then using the search function of the forum and of course more reading.
Now I understand a good deal about ADB, terminal, and the many, many other things that come with a rooted phone,,
I don't agree with the post that said if you don't get it don't try it.....
But that is cause I learn by doing...
As mentioned, doing this is a little complicated. The wrong step can temporarily brick your phone and then you'd have to know how to fix it, which in a way also requires a certain level of knowledge. It's best to learn and absorb the information first and to NOT be in a hurry to implement what you learn.

As mentioned, we all just love the stuff, and pick it up as we go. Most of us read extensively and have well set backgrounds on computers. If you want to get your degree in brain surgery, it helps to have basic knowledge of human anatomy, first.

Nandroid is a backup program build into the... "recovery mode" for lack of a better description. It's where you do the alt-s at. Alt-b creates a backup of your system. To restore it, you must read the thread sticky that walks you through it.

As mentioned, FAT32 and EXT2 are types of filesystems. Think of it as being told to store a box in a wearhouse. The filesystem, in a sense, would be like the isles, shelves, etc. that help you not just have a giant pile of stuff.
This is asking you to have an SD card that has been partitioned off into two partitions (a giant wall in the middle of the wearhouse) where on one side you have one way of storing things that is easily understandable by the average joe (windows, linux, apple) and one side that is much more complicated but much more efficient to store things that only the wearhouse manager understand (linux.)

No. We all started somewhere. Nobody here came here and understood everything over night. Most of us have YEARS of experience in the computer field, if not decades. As far as knowledge here, it takes months of READING to really start to understand things. Once you do, THEN things will make sense and then you're less likely to break your phone.

And like mentioned, a script is just what it is in real life. Something you follow. If I gave you a movie script, you follow what it tells you to do while in the movie. In the computer world, it's the same. You write a script that tells the computer what to do.

I see you joined few days ago. I suggest you start from the begining. i.e. read all stickies. Every questions that you've asked here was asked before by someone else and answered multiple times.
To offer a glimpse of hope here: it's a lot easier for n00bs now as more and more people get comfortable with Android and Android tools and it's not just 2-3 guys who can answer a question. Also, at this point we have apps that will run a script for you, move your apps and caches to SD, overclock you CPU, etc etc etc.

Open the terminal program... I always do this **** in adb cause you wont catch me dead trying to type and read a small screen when adb is copy and paste.

/data/sdsplit -nd -fs 7500M (thats for an 8 gig card. so adjust it depending on what side card you have 4 gig = 3500M etc...)
Now you need to make sure you have an APPS2SD rom... That makes /system/sd available. Now you have to copy and make "aliases" from the old spot to the new... Million threads on that one. Just wanted to give props to "MartinFick"s script (bunch of commands in a file I guess you can say. You can run any partitioning sw on windows 7 or I would of gone that route...
i appreciate the replies. Ive been on this forum for about month checking throughout the day (instead of paying attention to my professors) but only signed up recently to post.
I do understand the concept of nandroid and the sd partition, I just get lost in the processes very quickly. In my life Ive only learned by screwing things up so im ready for almost anything. I dont want to get stuck without a phone though so Ill definitely try to get a better understanding before trying anything dramatic. I guess Ill keep looking for some website that has a search where I can just type in all of the language I dont understand, surely this type of site exists I just havent found it yet...

I did it on the dudes. Any (i think) build that enables the ext partition to be mounted to /system/sd will work...
So can I partition while on this regular build and then flash the apps2sd build or do I need to first download an apps2sd build and then do the actual partition?

When it says to use the jf build that's just the one he used and is familiar with the steps the root hack the phone are the same no matter what. Now the thing you want to do is learn one proccess and stick with it weather it be abd, fastboot, or the sdcard method for beginners or noobs I do not suggest adb or fastboot cause it require knowing how to use a comand line and if you don't know what that is then don't try it. But like everyone says read about it first before you take the plunge also since you have a friend who can do it have him show you how he does it sometime seeing it done on the fly or being told while doing it with someone there to take over if things go wrong is always good. Have fun flashing and once you figure it out do it a few time to get used to it

heheh .. didn't we mention we're all a bunch of geeks - LOL - genius cannot be found here (pointing at self) .. i have been known to have a couple bright ideas now and again tho
"script" is just a funny way of saying "we did the work for you" .. all those lines of text that nobody wants to type over and over and over are all neatly packed into one little file .. type the name of the file and VOILA!! all those lines of text are spit into the little pocket sized computer and you have no blisters on your thumbs to show for it
now .. if we could only find a script that got us thru rush hour traffic

I did what I posted then flashed the APPS2SD rom and then transferred everything over, but when I flashed it it still had all my apps so I would say you can do it before also.
Remember to nandroid backup before you try and move all your files.

Once you get adb running sending all these commands are so easy as you copy and paste and you can restore your phone back the way it was in 2 minutes...

i see. im so much more confident attempting the partition after these posts im tempted to ask for the same help with nandroid since ive looked through the threads. But I guess i should head to one of them and start asking questions i know they run a pretty tight ship around here with duplicate threads and off-topic ones and what not...

restoring a backup when you are can connect with fastboot is so simple. Once you get adb working then dl and put fastboot in the tool dir. Then you go to your sd card /nadroid/randomcrap/whatever date/ and copy the 3 files below into the same tools directory.
from the command line on your computer type
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash data data.img
I flashed to one of the first cupcake roms and was like **** this! flashed right back to my old backup. ahhhhh!!!

I was wondering if anyone else was running into the problem I'm having, and if it has been covered before and I missed it in the search box earlier I apologize. I just recently tried to upgrade to JACHero2.6 and my market app (most important) along with several others are missing. The apps are automatically installed on all my other roms, it is only with hero that I end up missing alot of apps. I have a correctly formatted SD card and I did a wipe before I installed this and tried the whole process twice. If I am forgetting to do something special prior to installation or afterwards please let me know!!

you may have gotten a bad download. try redownloading it again. do you have 3 partition (fat32 ext2/3 linux-swap) if not i suggest that for jac's 2.63 also make sure you check file extensions in recovery screen. hopefully this helps
Yes I have my card that exact format and I tried using the filesystem checker in the recovery screen it said filesystem check was complete!! I'll try doing the whole process over again but I'm not sure how that would help, and it is sad too this is the best damn hero rom i've tested to date, its fast as hell!! If it weren't for my apps not being here i wouldn't be planning on a future rom update in the near future or until some big release happens.
make sure you always check md5 sum of all your hero build download
you could of had a damaged downloaded rom and this could affect your rom.
Just tried to download a fresh copy of the rom, checked to make sure my sd card was working properly, wiped and re-flashed yet my market app and the same apps I was missing before is still missing. It should be included that apps on my ext2 were coming back like they should be just not all of them, and not a few apps that I thought should be included with the rom. Is there anything I should check that I may not have yet?
I would use Root Explorer to check if the apk files are still under system/sd/app if they aren't... well, there's no way you're going to see them again unless you re-install them. You can also look under system/sd/app_s if that's there. Other than that, if you can't find it, it's not there. (If you know the exact name of the file or at least part of the apk file name, under terminal type: find "file name" (w/o quotes ofc)
You can add wildcards (*) if you don't know the exact name of the file. If the apk file is still there... well... let's just see if its there first.
I checked using terminal, I typed "vending.apk" and tried to check the dir's you specified for the apks. If they are there I can't find them, although I am a bit limited as terminal is the only app that came loaded with which to check for files. If the apk files are indeed not there then why would the apps install on their own without a problem on any other build but hero??? I must be doing something wrong right? I am open to any suggestions at this point, even using a different rom to check for something, my goal is to have this rom flashed with my apps working soon!
heres the vending.apk from jachero 2.63 you can try and adb push it to /system/sd/app_s and see if it works.
Thanks, I'll try pushing that over but I'm still worried about the rest of the apps I'm missing. Would there be anything else I could try to make it possibly fix all the missing apps? What could be causing this problem in the first place? I did notice that my sd card has an ext2 rather than ext3 part, will that cause all of this to happen? I'm still pretty lost on this. I tried going back to another rom just to make sure my apps would still all pull up correctly, and they did so it has to be something related to this most recent build of jachero, or something

i have the exact same problem and noone was able to help me yet.
It must have something to do with Jacs apps2sd method. i read some tweets between him and cyanogen that it might be a little 'rough'.
however - it's always the same apps that are missing, in my case it's (badly enough) launcher.apk AND rosie.apk which pretty much means that i can't solve it.
i also tried everything i could with ADB - without luck. I somehow have the feeling that theres something staying on the phone even when wiping and formatting.... I'll check this through ADB this evening.

I have used AndExplorer and put the APK's in the sys/sd/apps and it all worked fine. Very easy to do if you don't know how to push, just reboot after.

You don't need to have the myfaves app for you myfave minutes to work. You are still calling them for free regardless if you have the icon or myfave compatible phone or whatever. If you want to manage the people just log on to mytmobile.com and make the changes there.

open up your copy of the build and check in system/app_s to see if the .apks are even in the build. if pushing the vending.apk works i dont mind posting the other ones you are missing if you want to pm me or something
Just tried opening the update.zip file and verified that all the apks are there. Which makes me wonder what exactly is up. Im thinking it could be an apps2sd issue, like what was said above. I didnt have this problem with older hero roms that i can remember. TBH I could try pushing apps with adb but that wouldn't bring back my other 3rd party apps floating in ext2 limbo. So I'm out of ideas ;(

try going to the recovery console and entering upgrade_fs and that will change your ext2 to ext3 and see if wiping and flashing change anything. also if you have root explorer you can check your /system/sd folder to see if all of your third party apps are there
Just tried upgrade_fs and it gave me a "unable to allocate block" I noticed there is little if any room left on the ext2 partition. Would that cause all of this? If not would it be worth a shot to resize the partition and give it more space from my fat32 then try to upgrade wipe reload again?
If you're out of ideas, then I would attempt to resize first (but backup your fat32 first) and then see if that solves it, if not, then I would format, wipe, and update...
but are you sure those 3rd party apps are not there? Try using Root Explorer to determine if the 3rd Party Apps are there, if they are, just pull them to your sdcard and try installing them again with ASTRO or something like that.

One miraculous day, my efs folder became corrupt, when it just so happened to be the week after the hard drive on my computer took a dump! What a week this has been.. I was wondering if it is possible for someone to zip their EFS folder and send it to me to see if I can't get this phone to connect back to the network again. I honestly think there are applications on androids marketplace that will wipe things if you have superuser installed.. because it was like BAM, one morning I wake up and my efs folder was deleted the day after I had installed some new apps.
So my question is - Will someone send me a backup of their EFS? If that won't conflict with their phone of course -- I would send it back to Samsung, but their 3rd tier support has no idea what I'm talking about - they just hear root and think I'm a piece of trash.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I have not seen anything about trying someone elses efs so I thought it could be a bit experimental as well.. Thanks

This is an interesting request, Brett.
I thought the efs.rfs file contains one's phone imei number/network id etc.
idk for sure...
I thought using someone else's imei is kinda like "let me borrow your ss# so i can check the ss office to see if mine is working.

Fortunately for me, I had a efs backup on my hd.
I think I also saw scripts in Zeus and Doctor ROM that backs up efs also prior to flash..

I wasn't trying to steal anyone's IMEI.. I just have tried multiple techniques, but I have not tried the first link..
I've been having trouble getting a shell with adb, does it need to be in download mode?
I was trying to see if it were possible to copy someone's existing files, and use a hex editor to change things, but reading into it, the IMEI is not able to be edited easily without knowing the encyrption type.
I'm just frustrated and have been back and forth with both at&t and also samsung (Their support is a joke, no one I spoke with even knew what the EFS folder was..)
I will try this technique and will report back later when I get home from work tonight. I've been reading a lot of similar issues with the null/null IMEI in the infuses and the guy at the AT&T store said that this was the reason they stopped selling the phone in their store.

From the tone of your post, I didn't suspect any malice...I had a gist of what you were trying to do.
From reading some of links, there may be some method of recovery.
I hope that you're able to get it back.
I posted one a while back. I think it was in the q&a section. I won't be at my computer for a couple of days or I'd upload it for ya. Try searching or scrolling thru there.
Edit: I just uploaded an EFS.zip, unzip and flash the included efs.tar thru Odin or heimdall.
I had the same problem but i fixed it through Odin. There is an option in odin where you can click on the side (sorry i just reformated the comp so i dont have odin installed) that says something about the EFS. Try that, it fixed it for me.
On a related note. I thought I read somewhere that typical backups such as tibu and nandroid do NOT back up the efs folder. Is this correct? Should we all be doing this manually to protect against corruption?
Try searching here or on market. I remember there was this app called "nitrality" something. This app backs up EFS that we can restore in case we mess it up.

I did try to dl that app and ran it. It didn't work for me. The app hung up the system until you fc it.
If you're versed in linux or Term emu, you can use script to back up your efs.
If you had flashed zeus or doctorz, there are scripts build in that backs up your efs.
if you had root explorer, you can find efs folder in your root. long press on the folder allows you to create zip or tar of this as well.
Any harm in just copy/paste the whole folder to external SD with root explorer? Then copy paste to windows over USB? Will permissions get messed up?
I think I've already backed it up but there have been a couple threads on this. Wonder if it should be part of superthread or a sticky...do this first :...

no problem with copy/paste that I know of.
Being cautious, I have a zip, a tar, and the whole folder on my PC, USB and box.net.
Hypothetically,
I have access to another Infuse on the same family plan at that, if i were to copy the efs folder to mine what would that do?
I want to make sure not to have the same IMEI number on the network though, but this could save me a lot of hassle...

I think I'm going to root the 2nd infuse, back up her efs folder (MULTIPLE times lol) and fix it so it's generic and not an exact replica of hers..
Do you see any problems there? I'm definitely not an expert at all with this.

In order to see what is on the root of a phone, you may need to root it.
Once rooted, you can look for the efs folder.
I haven't used z4root in a while on an unrooted phone, I don't know if this program will let you see the root folder or not. It's possible.
The efs on my phone shows several programs and folders.
One of the folder is /imei. I suppose this is where the unique id is located.

as you can see, the efs contains unique id...i'm not sure of even how to make up a different imei file from using someone else's efs folder.
if your phone boots up but does not connect, if you go to settings/about phone/status
does it list the imei?
if it does, are you able to use a script in terminal emulator to back it up?
if you can't find the script, you can try flashing doctor or zeus rom, they have scripts to back up your efs folder. then try locating it on your phone.
the other thought i had was for you to call your provider to see if they can give you your previous imei number.
I'm only reasoning from what I have read...these are new territory to me.
Right, I have rooted my phone and for whatever reason the EFS folder is completely empty... The folder is there, but completley empty.
I have the IMEI number, its on the back of the phone as well as AT&T gave it to me.
The fact that my entire folder is empty, and I hadn't backed anything up because I never flashed the kernel or rom makes me think that the android marketplace does have malicious code that simply says:
if(phone==rooted){
wipe efs foler
}
continuing to pull my hair out and attempt new things, if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Check out Post # 5, I just edited my post.
its not simply a folder its actually a partition, on Linux you can mount drives/partitions however you like so it can appear to be under another directory and be an entirely different device.
you can make a .rfs image from the dd command through adb or terminal emulator.
if it is corrupt you "may" be able to salvage it through options of the dd command.
I gotta look up the device path and whatnot but if there is anything on there, visable or not, you might be able to recover the unique files and paste them over the files from someone else's efs backup. if not I have heard but never tried it, but I heard that fromatting the partition will cause the system to generate a generic efs, but I don't know for sure.
edit: the device location is /dev/block/stl3
you can dump it to the SD card with
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs bs=4096
if there are bad blocks I think but not quite sure you can add noerror to the end
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/efs.rfs bs=4096 noerror
but if the information has actually been deleted unless it was overwritten it is mostly intact. it is not well known that delete doesn't actually delete the data, even after a format data can be recovered with the right program. if the dumps come up empty there is also dd_rescue and foremost but I don't know if those commands are available on android, but you may be able to loop mount the dump on a Linux box or in cygwin and try the ddrescue or foremost commands.

hopefully you can recover something. and learn something along the way. this is also useful for recovering deleted files and securely deleting stuff you want gone for real.

Uh, NO than you. My EFS folder has nothing to do with yours. Don't know how that would work...
This should probably go in some general Q&A forum, but this is by far the most helpful community I've come across so I wanted to try here first. I've finally got my Ubuntu box up and running again (upgrading to 14.04 wasn't pretty) and was able to build for both my 700t and my n5 without error, but I'm afraid to pull the trigger and flash it. I'm building straight CM for the tablet and AOSP for the phone, so what is the worst that could happen? I haven't gotten either of them to run in the emulator, but I'm not completely sure that is even possible. Any insight you may have would be most appreciated.

The worst thing that can happen is that you brick your device, but you must do something sufficiently stupid for that to happen. I can't say anything about your phone, but for the TF700T, as long as you have a working recovery, flashing a ROM won't brick it. You may want to create the nvflash blobs if you want to have another safety net - it is possible to brick the TF700T if you force it to boot to the recovery and the recovery is broken.

Thanks _That, I appreciate your help! After reading your post and the f2fs post, i thought i was in the clear, but i still managed to screw something up. i'm unable to get the tablet to boot off of external, regardless of whether its my ROM or CROMBi. I see a "segmentation error" listed in the output from the the preinit, and then it always boots to internal. I thought maybe i got the mount points reversed in recovered, so i reflashed recovery, but no luck. i also tried deleting the preinit script and then reinstalling CROMBi, but i still get the same error. any thoughts?

For some unknown reason, dynamically linked executables don't work for preinit in KitKat. So if your *internal* ROM is not stock 4.2-based (I have no data about 4.3), the only way to run a preinit script is to use a statically linked busybox.
You still get that fault with a static busybox but it seems to copy files fine.
@psudeke you can compile the static busybox yourself simply with make static-busybox in your build folder - or just steal mine from /system/boot

Your fault may come from one of the programs that you call in your script (did you forget to prefix some line with "busybox"?).

it comes from the ls -l /init* which indeed doesn't have the busybox prefix but if I do it gives some other error I forget now
Anyway it doesn't harm the boot process - just an error message

Internal is the 5/17 build of Crombi, and its a brand new install. with a full format of the data partition (which in my haste to get this working yesterday, i wiped out my nandroid from right before i tried this).
is there any connection between when the internal is flashed compared to the external? in other words, if i reflash the internal rom, it should still recognize an existing external rom? hope that makes sense, i'm still shaking off the effects of a little too much whiskey last night.:laugh:

No currently if you reflash internal it will only see internal. You need to reflash external for that to work.

Ahh, thanks sbdags! that fixed the issue with ROM2SD. i got that impression when i pulled the preinit and saw it only had an entry for internal. but, i'm still very much in a learning phase so i didn't want to jump to a conclusion.
and after getting crombi to boot on external, i swapped sd cards and my build of CM11 actually booted! now the real learning process begins as i figure out how to customize it.

Just wanted to thank you both again for your help. After much trial and error, i was able to build the 5/27 version of CM and merge in that's 9 f2fs kernel, its running well so far. not a bad quadrant score for someone who doesn't know what they're doing!

Be careful what you wish for, I've got a laundry list of questions ranging from basic Linux commands to the nature of the multiverse, lol.
I do have one question out of the gate about the update-binary file. I'm trying to add a couple apps to either the system or data folders, but I'm not sure what commands are available from the stock CM file. I think for the most part by looking at your updater-script file I can figure out the commands to do what I want, but given the little I know about this and the size difference of the binary file between CM and the one i was looking at of yours, I'm curious. Is the best way to see what's available CM's git? I basically just want to install a different Launcher and Viper instead of DSP manager for sound. Do I need to study up on edify to look at the binary or is there an easier way?

yes the easiest way to do it is just make 2 folders with your extra apps in it say /extras/app
then add the following to the updater-script (you don't need to touch the update-binary unless you start using aroma)
package_extract_dir("extras", "/system");
delete("/system/app/DSPManager.apk");
delete("/system/priv-app/Trebuchet.apk");
What that does is copies the extras/app folder into system and deletes your unwanted apps
note apps can be installed into 2 folders /system/app or /system/priv-app
similarly you can install your user apps into /data/app but this is dangerous with launchers as if the user manually uninstalls it you can't do anything on the tab

one other quick question (hopefully), I saw in the XDA WIKI that i can possibly test the script using the update-binary, do i have to do this on the tablet itself? i spent all afternoon trying to fix a problem that amounted to an errant quotation mark in my script (and i knew it was something like that too. too many years of non-terminated string errors to not look there first:laugh, but the only way i could find to test it was to rezip the file and flash. any suggestions?

one other quick question (hopefully), I saw in the XDA WIKI that i can possibly test the script using the update-binary, do i have to do this on the tablet itself? i spent all afternoon trying to fix a problem that amounted to an errant quotation mark in my script (and i knew it was something like that too. too many years of non-terminated string errors to not look there first:laugh, but the only way i could find to test it was to rezip the file and flash. any suggestions?

just zip the /meta-inf folder, and flash that to test. obviously comment out any format commands as they will fail. That is what I do.
