Moving between letters - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to move the cursor inside a word like when you use the arrows in a PC keyboard?
I often need to correct the spelling or add punctuation signs like: ¿ ¡ etc. And this lack of arrows is a problem.

Long press on the word you want to edit & a cursor will appear above the word. Slide your finger around until the cursor is placed where you want it. ;-) Don't press too hard when carrying out this manoeuvre.

Thanks! I had trouble figuring out the same thing. For some reason I thought I remembered reading to highlight the word then drag. Was wondering why I could never get it. This is very useful

Thanks, it does work. It's still kind of hard for me but at least I'm able to edit words this way.

Thanks for the info i was having the same problem now i have no problem moving the cursor between letters.

BlindType vows to autocorrect all wrongs with your Android virtual keyboard

Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer gets too fat to be able to dial a number? Well, he wouldn't have had that problem had BlindType been around. This soft keyboard is described by its makers as being extremely resilient to inaccurate input and looking at the demo video after the break, you kinda have to agree -- it seems to have a pretty kickass predictive algorithm. Aside from that, the keyboard also dynamically adjusts to wherever and however you choose to type, meaning its size and orientation track along to your input, which goes some way to justifying the somewhat odd name (it's meant for blind operation, not blind people). Text can be inserted without the keyboard even being on screen, while spaces are added by swiping to the right. BlindType should be coming to Android devices some time in the near future.

Wow, cant wait for this

There's been a lot of talk about this keyboard lately, and it seems interesting, but not sure how useful it really will be...
Also, does anyone else hate it when a keyboard doesn't come with an Enter button?
not only at having no enter button sucks but I always like having a search button is nice for example in the android market!
swype is da ****!

Dvorak keyboard layout

Hi does any one know of a dvorak keyboard layout for our evos? I have a sneaking suspicion that we would see some nice speed gains in typing using that layout.

I think this would be interesting to have. I tried teaching myself Dvorak last semester, but I had too many things to type up so I was faced with 1) stick with QWERTY and ruin my learning, or 2) use Dvorak and slow my typing down to 15 WPM. Maybe I will give it another shot in the future.
Edit: AnySoftKeyboard in the Market has a Dvorak add-on pack.
I've tried the any keyboard and didn't like it. If we could get that layout for the stock or modded htc keyboard that would be sweet.
I would mod it myself but I have no knowledge of these things and from all the digging haven't been able to figure out where to start.

I have been doing some digging myself, because I really want this to happen, and it looks like in order to make a dvorak keyboard layout, we would have to start with the source code found here, and build our own.
h**p://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/inputmethods/LatinIME.git
The layout information can be found in the java/res/xml/kbd_qwerty.xml file, seen here:
h**p://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/inputmethods/LatinIME.git;a=blob;f=java/res/xml/kbd_qwerty.xml
However, the big problem with just changing all those keys to dvorak ones is that the symbol keys on dvorak are on the top, but on the bottom on qwerty. So if you count just the actual letters, the letters per row will be off.
Basically, what we need to do is move the delete key to the upper right, and rearrange the number of keys per row.
I've never done any coding for Android before, and so I've tried, but I'm still trying to figure out if I can build only the LatinIME.
I finally found some time to take this on.
It's not perfect, but maybe it will work for you.

CM 6.1 keyboard

Is remapping a single key a difficult thing to do, for you smart dudes?
I don't use the voice key at all. Can that key be remapped to a right arrow key? I don't miss or need all of the arrow keys but having a way to move the cursor to the right would really make editting a multi-line message much easier. I can use the backspace to move it left and just retype the letters but moving right would be oh so nice.
(I'm not a complete noob but my programming kung fu is still lacking compared to a lot of you...)
bump bump b.. (for min char requirement)
Taking a shot in the dark but I am guessing you would need to modify the keyboard.apk(?) .. or add a new keyboard with this mod done.

You can always just modify the keyboard 'theme' and replace the key you want with a right arrow. It wouldn't work but it would look the way you want it to.

Missing my Scrool ball like had in HERO

HI
I am missing my scroll track ball as when i type any text and want to amend the text in upper line or something like i have to click on that particular part, having fat fingers sometime its impossible or take few more click with my fingers to get to that particular part of the text
so any one experienced this ?... i seen HTC DESIRE HD the keyboard got the arrows keys to move the typing cursor across but not in our Sensation
any other solution
Please excuse my poor English
Thanx
I came from the Wildfire which as the trackpad. I thought I would miss it but I don't.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro, and imo it is the best alternative keyboard out there. So customisable! You can add arrow keys with that keyboard. There's a trial version of the keyboard if you want to test it out and look at the settings.
Ahh, I feel your pain. I too miss my G2 trackpad. I didn't even realize how much I used it for that purpose until I was without it. I use ultra keyboard for my fix. The auto correct algorithm is the best I've used so far. And you can shorten the key height(or enlarge) to make the keyboard the same height as stock with the arrows included.

Predictive Text Settings

Question about settings for the stock samsung keyboard...
I'm using the stock rom (rooted) and the stock samsung keyboard.
I like having the phone offer up suggestions for words I'm typing in, but I DON'T like to have the phone auto correct my actual typing. I want to select a suggested word myself or use the one I typed the way I typed it if I don't physically select a suggestion.
However, the way it is now, if predictive text is on, the phone wants to auto correct my typing... such that if I want to use a word the way I typed it, I have to select it to override the one the phone picked as the predicted text.
Is there a way to keep the suggestions but turn off the auto correct? The only option I saw was to turn off predictive text and that turns everything off so that you don't even get any suggestions.
Hope that makes sense. Thanks!
Stock keyboard brings the suck, don't it. I swapped 'er out for the jellybean keyboard in the play store and been thrilled with it.

I love this phone but [email protected] the stock keyboard is horrible (to me). When I misspell a word and backspace to correct a letter or more it fills in with a whole other word on top of the letters that I didn't delete. It's not very friendly when it comes to quick typing simply because it is always replacing my words, correctly spelled and all, with their own suggestion.

Click to collapse
That pissed me off enough to change out the keyboard.
