Photos in DCIM become unusable... - Thunderbolt General

So I hand fed a few .jpg images to my DCIM/100MEDIA folder since I was having some issues with them becoming unreadable, They just seem to disappear, then I find them in File browser, but no longer exist in gallery, limiting editability for use as desktops and such... Using thunder and lightning 1.3

Im having the same issue but Im running VirusRom. Gallery doesnt work unless I manually find the image thru a file explorer and choose the gallery option. But just opening gallery from app tray does nothing, or opening gallery thru wallpaper does nothing.

There has been some talk that these MicroSD cards are crap. Mine started corrupting pictures and then failed completely, had it replaced by Verizon.

Weird. I haven't had that issue and I transferred some photo's from my OG Droid DCIM folder.

I was having this problem with all roms. I had to back up my SD, format it, and then put everything back. Haven't had a problem since.

Now they're disappearing completely, even images taken with the phones cam/vid. Cheap SD cards make a little sense... I have formatted, almost every ROM... I'll check it out.

By chance, do you happen to have a .nomedia file in any of these directories that are "losing images" or making photos "unusable".
If so, this would be your issue. Remove that file and they will show up in Gallery again.

Same pictures multiple times in gallery

Ok so I'm running cog, the latest one, and when I go to the pics on my external sd, it is showing 4 of each pic. However, when I go to the folder there is only one copy. Anybody seem this or know how to fix it?

I had the samething happen only way i could get it to go away is reflash the rom.

It's the Gallery app bug in the leaked Froyo ROM we have. I know my JI6 had this problem from day one. There is no sure way to fix it.
The official Galaxy S Froyo ROM released in Europe is not better either. Its Gallery app has a nasty battery drain bug.
Try this without having to reflash.
Connect to PC and MOVE all of your pictures to your PC. Delete anything you see inside .thumbnails in the DCIM folder (from your default Camera storage). Move all of your pictures back to your phone. If you accidentally copied a .thumbnails folder, make sure you don't move that back in. Gallery will reindex all of your pictures and create new thumbnails.
Just deleting .thumbnails and a reboot works for me when/if this happens.

That didn't work for me. I just tried it. My gallery started showing multiple photos again. I think this only happens when I connect to my PC at work (and/or home) and browse photos using Explorer.
same thing happening to me, i have 3 of each photo on the sd card
Try going to your picasa web albums at picasaweb.google.com/home
login with the gmail account you use on your phone and look at your web albums
By default the gallery app / android will sync with picasa web albums, so anything added there will appear in gallery.
I've never used picasa but I'm gonna give it a try.

Move everything into your internal sd card. I know it sucks and it's not as secure but just make sure you backup regularly. It got really annoying deleting the thumbnails once a week and it hasn't happened since I shifted everything to my internal sd.
I had the same problem. Not once, but twice. The first time I deleted the copies from my PC then rebooted. For awhile that seem to work, but just today I had the same problem in multiples of 8 for each pic.
Hopefully someone finds a fix for this
FROYO.UCJI6 Rooted, same issue except I have multiple icons for same pics that dont even exist on the phone anymore. Ive killed gallery, deleted every copy of .thumbnails I can find, rebooted..etc. No avail, folders that no longer exist on the phone show up in gallery, with multiple thumbnails for the same pic, very annoying.
I've been flashing roms like crazy here recently and haven't has problem yet. Though it is said it a leaked rom bug so I'll see if out happens again.

I also had that same problem with the cog ROMs. I tried many of the suggested solutions, including deleting .thumbnails. Unfortunately, nothing ever worked.
I have since switched to Perception, and I haven't had that problem since.
Ok..here is the fix from other thread
With root explorer delete:
- /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.media/externalXXX.db
- /sdcard/Android/data/com.cooliris.media
reboot
Good luck

has anyone figured out how to prevent the phone from deleting pictures from gallery

since i've updated to 2.3.3, i've noticed that some pictures are missing from phone. i think i had the issue with 2.3.2 as well. noticed video missing as well. this really gets to me since the pictures just randomly get deleted from the phone. i've googled it and it's a common problem. does anyone have a fix for this yet?
My understanding is that the pictures arn't actually getting deleted, just the gallery isn't displaying them. To be sure, connect your phone to your PC and browse to the pictures, they should all be there.
I believe I saw a 'fix' somewhere about installing a different gallery manager app, and that that seemed to fix the issue. I can't remember which forum I saw it on, so please don't quote me.
This used to happen to me on my NS. It would look like the photos where deleted but then when I would check later on they would be their ,and that was on 2.3.2
As we say in French: "Dans le doute, reboote". (When in doubt, reboot). Your pictures will be back in the gallery. That's the only workaround I found for the moment...
I've had this but the pictures *are* deleted. I do not trust the Gallery app anymore, and only use QuickPic (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&feature=search_result).
T
Quickpic is the way to go!!
I use Quickpic as well cuz the gallery app sucks. I just lost pics and a video that i converted and moved onto my phone. They are gone. Can't find them using my computer to browse my phone, can't find them using ESfile explorer either. Rebooted. Still gone
Can't find a fix anywhere. Not happy.
At least I didn't lose data on my iPhone.
I have had this happen to me too, but i had the app AndExplorer on it and i read something where it said that this app was known to delete files just randomly, so if you have this app.. id suggest using Linda Manager or another file manager instead..
Here is what you can try when you see pictures not showing up in gallery3D app:
Stop or FC Gallery.apk so it's not running
Use root expolorer (or some other expolrer capable of displaying files and folders starting with ".")
Browse to /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails
Delete all pictures and files you see there (those are thumbnails only)
You might have to reboot the phone but usually you can just start Gallery and it will regenerate (slowly) all your thumbnails again.
Gallery3D app creates the folder called ".thumbnails" for which it stores all thumbnails of your pictures for quick screen draw on the 3D interface. If for some reason you copy your pictures from one place on SD card to another or you add new pictures without Gallery.apk running they wont show up because thumbnails were either deleted or never created.

[Q] I4G running Revolution 4G 3.3 - mass data loss??!

Apparently I'm cursed with Android phone. My last SGS suddenly erased half of itself and I ended up having to take it back to where I bought it from, and it turned out to be faulty.
Now I'm using a HTC Inspire 4G (Desire HD) with the stock 8Gb micro sd card.
I just wanted to see one of my videos in my gallery and the gallery was empty.
All I saw was were two folders: One was "All photos", with 3 photos and one had a blank name with 3 photos.
When I go into "All Photos", I see the 3 photos which are just placeholders. It looks like an icon for a photo - sort of like monochrome hills with a circle for the sun or something, with a little exclamation mark down the bottom right. That's all I see for the 3 photos. If I tap them, nothing happens. If I tap and hold, I can see its size, date, resolution is 0x0, but it can't seem to find the path of the image.
If I open up my DCIM folder in ES File Explorer, then I can browse to DCIM and some (not all) of my images (and none of my videos) are there. I can open the images in ES.
I have images/videos in other folders on my SD card, and some (not all) of the photos from those locations are present, and again no videos are there.
If I take a photo or make a video, that one photo/video will appear in the gallery and in the DCIM folder until the SD card mounts/unmounts (for example if I do it manually, or if I connect it to my PC as a mass storage device). Then, I can still see the photo in ES but not in gallery.
Additionally, my google latitude widget and google places widget on my far right home screen had error placeholders. I can't remember the exactly message but something like "this widget cannot be displayed". I deleted the widgets and re-added them and they seem to be ok now.
I'm running my HTC Inspire 4G (Desire HD) with Revolution 3.3 ROM. I have SetCPU and Llama profiles running persistently in the background.
Any idea why this happened? Is my media lost? Any program I can try to recover them? I had some things there which I would really have preferred to keep.
Thanks.
Okay, so in answer to my own question...
This issue has nothing to do with Revolution 4G ROM, nor with HTC.
Apparently the issue is that Google are douchebags who have known about this issue for almost two years and have done nothing about it.
To reproduce the problem:
First back up you SD card, just in case.
Create a new folder on you SD card... call it "test" or something, and dump some jpegs and videos there. Go into Gallery and let it index the folder. You can see there that there are a number of jpegs and videos.
Go into ES or Astro or whatever and create a new file called .nomedia in the folder.
Force a rescan somehow. I did it by unmounting/remounting the SD card.
Go into Gallery – see the folder is not there. This is the expected result.
Go into ES or Astro to your test folder. Notice that the video files have been DELETED.

[Q] cancerous thumbnail file

My .thumbnail file in .DCIM keeps expanding to fill all available space, preventing me from taking pictures and causing the system to become unstable. Today, ".thumbdata3--1967290299" was up to 3.5 gb. I delete it every time, but it grows back after the next reboot. Whether I delete the folder, the files itself, doesn't matter. I do have a lot of large pictures on the external SD card (not taken with the camera on the phone), which is perhaps the reason thumbnail is growing so large.
I used titanium backup pro to freeze gallery, but then I can't take pictures with the camera.
Judging from google search and a search across all XDA forums, this is not specific to the skyrocket, or the rom I'm running (cyanogenmod 10). I'm not coming across any specific solutions though other than delete them. There was one suggestion to setup a program to automatically delete the file, however that seems... inelegant.
I've also switched to using quickpic instead of the stock gallery option, but again that does nothing.
I tried naming a notepad document to .thumbnails to prevent android from making a .thumbnails file, but windows wouldn't let me.
Mediascanner seems to go nuts every time I turn on my phone after deleting the old file, the phone is warm to the touch, and BetterBatteryStats indicates it's running the cpu at 1.51 GHz for 15 to 20 minutes after boot. I'm going to try disabling media scanner to see if that prevents thumbnail from being built up, but I was wondering if anyone had any other fixes or suggestions. Like if there was any way to set a maximum file size on the thumbnail file, or if there was a way to disable the stock gallery without compromising camera functionality.
The solution I suggest will help with your media scanner issues but your photos will no longer be visible in the gallery.
Go to the folder you keep your photos in and use a file explorer app like root explorer to create an empty file named .nomedia
This tells the android media scanner to skip that folder. If you have folders inside folders, place a .nomedia file in each folder.

If media scanner has already detected said files, will it still show up in either Gallery or Quickpik? And will new pictures I take be added to either without media scanner?

I am pretty sure already scanned pics will be gone. As for new pics, I don't know. You just have to try it yourself.

Update: rescan media root, preventing media scanner from going every time the phone reboots, seems to have fixed it. Camera function is not compromised, nor are pictures hidden from quickpik.

I was just going to recommend that. It seems to have helped me keep boot times down and help with battery life.

A temporary .nomedia file permanently hid everything

Hey everyone,
I was reorganizing my pictures on the sdcard when I began testing CM's new Gallery app (GalleryNext). At that time, I decided I wanted to reorganize my files. I used ES file explorer to search for a .nomedia file and copied the first result to the root of the sdcard while I looked a permanent place to put it after deleting and moving pictures. Looking back at the gallery, I noticed suddenly that all pictures disappeared from my gallery, which I expected.
However, after I moved the .nomedia file AND rebooted (several times), I've noticed my gallery is STILL empty. I also noticed PlayerPro doesn't see any music. My alarm app (Gentle Alarm) however still plays music to wake me up and the MediaMonkey app can see the music. What is going on? ES is set to show hidden files, the .nomedia files are where they need to be. I first cleared data on both Google and CM galleries (which didn't work), then I uninstalled Gallery Next (didn't work), and I tried SD Scanner which is an app that can trigger media scan on KK (I know the old methods don't work on KK). I also reflashed my ROM. After reflashing, I got ONE photo from my gallery to appear.

I also got this problem. My solution is transfer all files to computer, then format sd card. BUT all data will gone if you not backup first.such as RR3 data.

Yeah I just ended up copying everything elsewhere and reflashing the factory image, then re-doing everything. Although, it would have been nice not to. Just part of the gamble when using nightlies I guess.
I had the same problem few days ago.
I deleted appdata from settings, apps, all apps, gallery, then rebooted and used this app to fix it:
