Ok, I know the official build isnt out yet, but I do know there are a slew of ROMs floating around, some of them on XDA. Any suggestions as to which one to go with? Any pros/cons of doing this? Just trying to find out, cause I saw the post on Engadget that linked to a closed thread here about the Froyo leak, and whatnot, so what ROM should I go with, or just wait a little for the official one to come out? And what abut Gingerbread? Should I even bother with Froyo?
Sorry, just got a lot of questions now that I've got my Captivate
Thanks guys
The official build is out for Bell Canada, I would try to get a ROM based on that.
Definitely a custom rom. The leak is really buggy
i agree with wvumaniac79. been running the leaked froyo and been troubleshooting it on a nearly daily basis (thank god for this forum!). some things i havent been able to solve and just lived with (still nervous about flashing, etc). but my patience is wearing thin to the point it'll overthrow my nervousness of re-flashing a new rom.
do a custom rom and you'll be happy.
Thanks for the info guys.
@vieve - I dont think you can flash a ROM for Canadian phones on an American phone can you? I know I couldnt with my old HTC TP2.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what Rom to use? Afaik, isnt Cognition the most popular one right now? Any bad things with flashing?
If I'm not mistaken the new perception rom is based off a build from Canada. Its made by design gears the same that does cognition. The newest cognition is awesome that's what I'm running on right now. Just test the waters and if you get stuck the forum is here for support.

Ok so perception and cognition are by same dev teams, so either one is a good one to do? Im assuming because theyre names are different that there are some differences between them? I was looking at cognition but ill give the other a look. Thanks

The cognition b4 was perfect for me. I didn't have any problems.
My personal favorite is the aosp cm6 spices rom, gives the look and feel of stock android. But cognition is good too
Alrighty, well Im gonna try Cognition real quick, and see how it runs... if all else fails, or something goes wrong with the phone, i can always flash back to stock eclair right?
Correct. I have though I bricked my phone a few times, but I always figure it out. This is my last ditch effort that always works for me every time If I think i bricked my phone.
Download Odin 1 click. Install samsung drivers, if you haven't already. Take the battery, sim card, and sd card out of your phone. Start Odin 1 click on your computer. plug the usb cable into the computer, but not the phone. Put the battery back into the phone. Hold the volume up and down buttons in. While holding those buttons, plug the usb cable into your phone. Your phone should turn on in download mode and be recognized by odin without even touching the power button on your phone. Then you can restore.
You probably won't need that advice, but if something goes wrong, I though I would save you a mini-panick.
The newest cognition 2.3b1-6 is running on captivate builds. Cog 2.4 is based off a vibrant build. Perception is based off i9000 builds. 2.4 was buggy for some but worked great for others. Perception is practically brand new only been around for a couple of days and doesn't quite work flawlessly YET. Hope this helps.

I agree. The most stable cog I used was 2.3b4. I never used b5 or 5.5. b4 was rock solid. b6 is faster, but has issues.
I got Cog b6 (latest one atm) running right now, and it seems to be running just fine.. I think my only issue is battery calibration, which Im in the process of fixing right now..
have to say, i like froyo a lot better then eclair, and not having touchwiz is soooooooo nice
currently running cogb6 and everything has been flawless so far. surprisingly, I haven't run into a single problem yet. also, flashing it w/ rom manager was dead easy
Yeah, i was pretty amazed at how easy it was and even more amazed at how much better it runs than the stock rom. About the only issue i have is the random shut off issue, which seems to be hardware related since it happened on stock eclair and on cogb6. A quick power on, restart and it works fine.
I really like cog. Runs great. Two complaints i have though. The musix player app that comes with stock eclair has a pull down control on the lock screen while the one in cog doesnt, even though they look like the same app. That and using the music shortcut in the Car Home app doesnt work (im guessing that the stock music app isnt installed?). Two minor grumbles, but something i can live with. Have to say its really really really really really nice to have gotten rid of touchshiz and atts bloatware. Touchwiz looks nice and all but damn, i love the stock android launcher and lock screen. That stupid swipe to unlock screen was killing me.
Ah well, im ranting. Regardless, this rom is great. Thanks for the input guys. Its greatly appreciated.
And yes, i did just type all this from my phone. :-D

Cog 2.3b6 is good...
Perception build 4 is good... fast has a better modem for it...
both done by DG both good... best thing todo is flash till you find one you like and fits what you want it to do.. other than that have fun with whatever rom you choose and enjoy it

I believe the reason that pulldown CD on the lockscreen for the music player doesn't work bc its part of touchwiz. No touchwiz no nifty CD animation. As far as car home goes I'm not sure.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
U can get the pull down CD on cognition 2.3b6 along with the puzzle piece notifications. They aren't in there now because the dev went back to the stock aosp lock screen instead of the touchwiz (aka "glass") lock screen. You just have to replace the android.policy.jar file in /system/framework/ with root explorer or some other method. U can get the file from an older cognition rom that had it or the stock rom.
Axura is a blazing fast totally tricked out rom. Ran cog and perception and both good but try Axura and you'll see what I mean.

Anyone else experience these issues or know of a fix? Thanks for your help!

Well, for one thing, that rom is obsolete.
This one is essentially the same thing, but more current:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057060
You should move to that one. I'm running it as I type this.
Make sure you flash it according to gtg's instructions, and that will help eliminate unknown weirdness happening.
You may need to flash the RIL that corresponds to your current radio, as the one included in the rom is for the 04.14 gingerbread radio, I believe. This is easily accomplished by way of gtg's RIL flasher, also available under his section in rom manager.

Thank you...new to this. I traded for this phone only to find out later that it was rooted. So now I'm experimenting with it a little. Mostly want it to be faster, improve battery life and the reception somehow. If you have any other recommendations let me know. I just searched the free ROM's on CM.

Mine's always shown HSDPA. I assumed it was my area, but it might be something else.
Read through the inspired ace thread and see if others have had the problem. Usually when I don't see other people mentioning a particular issue, I tend to think it's something with my personal set-up.
I don't have any experience with radios, apn's, the build.prop file yet, I'm still absorbing all the info surrounding these subjects, but I've been suspecting something isn't quite right in those areas, in my set-up.
You may want to do some similar exploration.
As far as the Google search bar, if you're talking about the widget that's on the stock home screen, it still exists in this rom, you just have to go to widgets and re-add it.

I've read the entire thread on this ROM, nothing covers it so I started a new thread....we'll see what I get back. No way for me to email the dev since I'm new to the site.
I am quite disappointed at people not reading. If you are a noob. Don't ask about flashing GB. There are many guides and flash the latest version, KH2. If you flash anything other than kh2 at the moment don't ask questions. not pointing fingers, but today, I replied to a thread saying that kg4 has issues with wifi calling. kg4 was released in july. This has been discussed hundreds of times, as well as you should flash the latest version. which is KH2. It doesn't have issues(none reported except for wifi strength which is on all gingerbread roms).
What i have noticed is that all people with wifi issues on gb(everyone). I had to take my phone to tmo today and I downgraded to froyo for that time. I had full wifi signal where I usually get 1 or 2 bars. And I must say, wifi signal is more or less the same even if it says full. Stop complaining about GB wifi signal.
I use wifi analyzer, and it does show a definite weaker signal with GB than when I was on Froyo. at work, I'm at the very edge of our wifi range, and sometimes it won't even connect on GB, when I had no problems connecting when I was on Froyo. I don't think it's the same.
Do you really need two threads for this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17287401
Read his reply, he's not a noob and states legit reasons for using kg4.
Post and threads like yours doesn't help noobs out one bit, it probably scares them off.

It sucks that the frustration level gets this high. We already have a lack of devs for our phone. These damn ungrateful noobs who want everything done in a customized version for free are who are driving the devs away from this board. Krylon and honk aren't even around much anymore and I can see why.
Really?
A couple of things...
First, if someone is still running or wants to run KG4, who are YOU to tell them they need to flash KH2? Also, KH2 is only available on THIS forum in deodexed format, so anybody who wants the odexed version (like me) would be SOL if they were relying on XDA alone.
Next, the wifi signal problem is definitely real. I could get a signal from my wifi a block away on froyo, and on gingerbread I can't even leave my yard, so all that 'there's really no difference in wifi signals' crap is just that: crap.
Finally, the devs are still around. They just do most of their work elsewhere, now. I'm guessing it's because nobody on these forums cares to read or follow the rules, and the mods are pretty lax at enforcing them.
All-in-all, though, if you don't want to answer a question someone has raised because you feel it's below you or they're an idiot for asking, then your course of action is pretty clear: don't hit reply.

Hi everyone, i'm glad to see we are on official gingerbread now.
I wanted to know if anyone will be working on a cwm package (or something) to make previous GB roms have the wifi strength of froyo?
-I want to emphasize that i'm not asking for an eta. More so if this is possible and something that I just need to wait to be released.
-I'm running icbinb ki3 tweaked exactly how i like it with battery how i like it. I'd rather not flash stock 2.3.6 unless that's the only way to improve my wifi. If I only have to wait for a package that will improve it on ki3, then id rather do that.
So thanks for reading, dont flame if you can help it.

The short answer from me is that I don't know. I wish I had more insight into what changed between Froyo & GB to cause the wifi to weaken. Could be as simple as drivers, could be that's how they're saving power, etc. I know flashing the KJ6 modem file caused people to have a big of an improvement with wifi though not the same level of performance with Froyo. I also read a lot of people had issues sending big SMS messages with KJ6, so that might be something to be wary about.
Anyway, you could flash the KJ6 modem file to see if it helps. As for something to get it back on par with Froyo, I'll have to leave that to the experts around here.

To be honest, noone really knows exactly what the problem is.
But if you want to add the wifi properties of KJ6 to any ROM, which are way stronger than any previous GB build, you can refer to my thread in the development section. The mod I posted gives you the wifi of KJ6 without the modem. (Im currently using this mod with KI3 and my wifi is pretty darn good ATM ;p)

I wanted to thank the developers of MR3 in this thread. Liquid, Jester, etc.
I'm a long time lurker of this forum since I got my Thunderbolt. I'm VERY VERY appreciative of the developers for creating a very functional ICS rom for the Thunderbolt. Shame on HTC and Verizon for sandbagging so long with what should be a very simple upgrade for them. I was running Thundershed for awhile but grew tired of the Gingerbread look and feel of Android. My friends all mostly have newer phones with ICS, and I couldn't believe that it was supposed to be out in August and it's now mid-October and it's still not out.
To my surprise, I log on to here and see that an ICS ROM had been released.
My only issues with this ROM are random restarts and the white screen error in Facebook/Gmail/etc. I don't really use the video camera much in general; could you use an aftermarket app, or is it broken period?
Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE this and will never go back to Verizon's bloated software. Even when an OTA is released with ICS I won't go back. My phone is running much faster and much better than with Sense and Gingerbread. With data off I had a 10% decrease in battery in 7 hours; with data on and normal use I'll get maybe 5 hours out of a charge on this ROM. About normal for this phone and it's absolutely terrible battery life with the stock battery.
I have it overclocked to 1.5ghz running interactiveX as my governor. It runs beautifully, other than those two minor issues I pointed out above. I haven't experienced any data drops or anything out of the sort like that.

I second this thread.
A major thanks goes out to all of you who develop, in any way, for the Thunderbolt community. This even includes testers.
To answer your questions...
The video and front camera are broken even with an aftermarket app and will remain broken, most likely, until Verizon releases the OTA. From the OTA, our awesome developers will then be able to fix camera issues and many other issues that will make their ROM's 100% stable.
Also, if you get random reboots, you may want to flash to a different radio.
If you are currently running the OTA radios from the 2.11.605.19 software and still get these reboots, try flashing the combo radio and hopefully the reboots will vanish or, at least, happen less often.
If you go to your settings, about phone, software information, more, and look at the baseband version...
If the numbers you see are:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then you are on the OTA 2.11.605.19 radios, which is my recommendation for the radios to use with this ROM. If these are the radio numbers you see, try the combo radio. If the numbers you see under your phones baseband version is not:
1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
Then it may be:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
If it is:
1.48.00.0930w_3, 0.01.78.0916w_3
Try flashing the 2.11.605.19 OTA radios found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605557
If you have the 2.11.605.19 radios, though, try flashing the combo radio found here:

Definitely want to ditto this thread. Thanks for continuing to support the Thunderbolt. I was on the verge of retiring the Thunderbolt. ICS has brought new the Tbolt new life though!
thanks for the links. I'm going to try upgrading tonight and see if that helps. I notice you flash the radio in hboot. If I do a nandroid backup, does it also backup the radio (so I can restore it)? Or if I **** up, will it be permanently bricked?
Ditto to all that has been said. Thank You to all who made this happen, including HTC and Verizon. Their inaction drove me to decide to root and find alternatives. I've been incredibly pleased with MR3.
Thanks all!

If you backup that ROM after flashing the radio, it will back up the ROM. Hboot is a whole different thing than the recovery. That radio is downloaded to the phone and will automatically run on any ROM after its downloaded, even if you start from scratch. But flashing any of those two radios will not brick you on any ROM. Worst case being you won't have signal or data until you flash different radios again.
Say if you upgraded to the newer radios, and then you flash a ROM based on an older software version, you won't brick. In fact, you may not ever experience any issues. Maybe just signal changes or random signal drops.
But no, it won't brick you. It's almost impossible to brick a Thunderbolt.
I recommend after flashing the new radios, immediately go and either change the name from PG05IMG to something custom, move into a different folder that's off of the root of the SD card, or just delete it once flashed.
This is for in a such case where you need to get back into recovery from hboot, it won't prompt you to install the radio again. Because if you had to get into recovery from hboot, it wouldn't allow you to since it runs a check for the PG05IMG files first... and with that being said... I was always told to never flash the same radio twice without changing to a new one first.

unless my phone's broken or something (going to Verizon tomorrow to reflash and check it), i say they're both absolute garbage. i've had much better luck with ROMs on other phones.

Back up 9 posts and you'll see a link to a video tutorial on how to flash a different radio. You'll even see 2 links to 2 different radios to flash and try.

well i reflashed Liquid this morning and it didn't crash this time, connected fine via wifi and setup completed properly.
all of my radio issues were on the old version (not sure if there's a difference in radios or whatnot), but if it acts up again i will try your recommendations. thanks a lot.

ah i see what happened now.
the first time i flashed it, i cleared /data after the flash before i brought the OS up, but you've included the launcher as a user app and not a system app. was this intentional? a user could easily screw up by uninstalling the launcher and have no way to interact with the OS. shouldn't there be a default launcher embedded in the system programs?
i'm an Android dev, but my understanding of system development is limited, but if i'm not mistaken, any Android ROM should come with a default launcher that is not uninstallable and has no icon as a backup launcher just in case.
He did install it that way so if the user wants to install their own launcher and remove the default. Its simple to make the new one a system app. All that has to be done is move the apk to /system and it is uninstallable.
