Fast battery drain - General Topics

this did Not used to happen, I put the phone in airplane mode and it uses 20 percent battery through the night, I now flash the rodimus rom and only used 3% overnight. now last night it used 20% again. under battery use nothing really showing. android system was at 92%.. battery just is draining fast overall. i even put a new battery to test. using optimus v. thanks

I have the same problem before when I had 2.1 OS, but after I upgraded to Froyo (2.2) my standby lasts for 2 days compared to 16 hours when I had 2.1.

Any issues if you flash back to 100% stock without installing anything? Also don't forget to update the radio's.

[Q] Acceptable battery life?

Ok, a little back story.
I screwed something up on my Captivate (at&t 2.2 + rooted + SuperCurio KB1+Voodoo Kernel w/ CWM) trying to install a different launcher via SGS Tools. I figured a workaround by grabbing Launcher Pro and Home Switcher from the market and have been running Launcher Pro since Thursday Night (it is now Saturday morning).
I usually get home from work and have 45% or more battery life left. Yesterday (first full day on Launcher Pro) I had about 20% left when I got home. I had read some unconfirmed reports of Launcher Pro causing excessive battery drain. I was not sure if that was the issue of if the time I spent fiddling around with the settings and shortcuts caused the extra battery usage.
Last night I did a full charge with the phone on, turned phone off and let it charge till full, turned back on to verify it was 100%, reboot into CWM Recovery, clear battery stats, clear Dalvic Cache (in case twLauncher was still hiding there), and put the phone in Airplane mode. When I checked the phone 8h and 45m later it had 91% of the battery remaining.
So, is using approximately 1% per hour in airplane mode normal/acceptable? Or is Launcher Pro causing excessive battery drain?
Right now I have 89% left (Flight mode was turned off and WiFi 1h 10m ago). Battery use shows Display 53%, Phone Idle 25%, Cell Standby 12%, and WiFi 10%.
Thanks!
1% per hour on airplane mode seems about right to me. That would mean it would take you over 4 days to drain completely...
In the past, I've used LauncherPro and didn't experience any problems with battery drain. I'm on ADW now. It has the same, if not more functionally, as LauncherPro. Give it a try and see if it helps your battery life.

Agreed i just got back from a trip to kenya in which i kept the phone on airplane mode the whole time I had screen on about 15 minutes per day and had a 2% power drain per hour

To the OP, even though you are using Launcher Pro right now, do you still have the other launchers (Home Switcher, etc) still running? Maybe try forcing close all other launchers that you are not currently using. This will make sure they are not draining your battery.
This is my personal experience, subjective of course, I found custom ROMS drained battery faster than stock Rogers ROM for me. I've started to use Launcher Pro last night and from 10 PM to 6 AM (8 hours) the phone still showed 100%. Nothing was running except phone signal.

I looked in settings/applications/manage applications/running and I do not see any other launchers running; nothing in running services either.
Quick update, because I know you are all wondering...
I flashed back to stock 2.2, rooted, deodexed, sideloading enabled, CWM, Voodoo lagfix, Plumb bob GPS.
On air plane mode, over 8h 50m, I used 7% of the battery.
So, this totally non-conclusive/non-scientific test shows that LauncherPro might use slightly more battery than the stock TW. However, I am already missing the 3d ap drawer, scrolling/customized dock, and home screen animations...
Now to decide if those features are worth the almost 30% higher battery usage...
I think I will have to try ADW and a few others to see if I can get the same look/feel/customization as LauncherPro without the extra battery drain.
Im starting to guess its a price you pay for using non-stock apps.
I have a captivate, and with stock 2.1 after a full charge at night and around 10 hours in sleep mode with wifi on (overnight sleep), it would consume around 1-3% battery.
After flasing my first 2.2 (cognition v3.04), it would consume, under same conditions, around 13-15%, then its been getting worse (cognition 4+) to the point it would`ve turned off by morning, not at full charge, but it would consume around 30-40%
Done the fixes, done the upgrades and patches. Done the installations too, the uninstalls and the monitoring. Problem persists.
I really like Cognition ROMs, and love 2.2, so i really find it hard to have no option but go back to stock 2.1. I would, perhaps, trade off battery life for Cognition v3.04, but i believe is a huuuuge issue.
Reading throughout forums i see that users find "normal" their battery life lasts for a day or even a "working day". Back in stock 2.1 my phone would easiliy last for 3 days on the same charge, with light use.
I'm back to stock after trying Cog 4.2.1, just to make sure im not imagining things.
Other thing i noticed was, with stock, my battery indicator would (i would say) refresh more consistently according to actual battery charge. With Cog ROMs i've noticed battery drains in "chunks", for example, i do a full charge 100%, play for 10 minutes, check other things over the internet and the battery would remain at 100%, then sleep mode. I turn it on a couple of mins later and then it shows 80%, making actual battery consumption more difficult to determine.
Not scientific at all, but my own experience.
Long story short and to answer your question:
Stock ROM appears to consume less battery
Users find that 1 day battery life is the norm and acceptable
**EDIT**
So I found a working combination... Cog 4.2.2 with overstock 1.1 kernel... It's wonderful so far. With my usual usage, i can see it lasting a good 2 days or even more on a single charge.

[Q] My new, stock Charge is getting ~6 hour battery life.

I've installed the Yelp, Movies, and Amazon app, nothing else, and I'm losing around 15% an hour with light/normal usage.
I've let the battery run down to 0 and recharged completely, I've turned off gps and wifi, and still get really bad life. I live in the Bay Area and get a solid signal all of the time. There's really no excuse for it.
Please don't tell me to flash to a rom, because that's obviously not fixing the issue. Light browsing and the occasional Google Maps has my phone at <20% by the afternoon.
Battery stats just show android system and screen brightness taking up power. What's the deal?
I also constantly have at least 255 / 328mb in use even with all applications closed.

The mb usage is normal i noticed this on stock because of Verizon apps that run in background. As far as not using the phone and only getting 6 good hours of use. i would take to the store and ask if they could change out the battery. Hope this helps.
+1 for that, sounds like you have a defective battery.

Thats about how long my battery gets me.
And if I forget to power down my phone at night, or put it on a charger it is dead by morning no matter how much of a charge it has before I go to bed.
I have an extended battery starring me in the face and can't use it yet since I couldn't find a door and had to have one shipped from Samsung.
Hopefully the extended battery cures my issues.
(I am running Gummy Charged 2.3.3 Beta, currently waiting for the 2.3.4 release)

I am curious as to what you guys are running. And if you go to bed with your phone on , and its dead by morning I can PROMISE you there is either something going on with your phone, or you are doing something wrong (i.e. you have your phone set to never sleep, your screen is set to maximum brightness, your are leaving your phone in desk cradle mode, etc etc etc.) But it's not the phone. May be a bad battery, but without being at your house and seeing what you are doing, I have no intelligent answer for you.

charge phone to 100%, boot into clockwork recovery and wipe your battery stats, then use the phone until you completely drain your battery until it shuts off. Then charge back up completely. This will calibrate your battery. try running a customer rom such as gummy charged or humble to see if you get bettery battery life... thousands of users have reported great battery life with both
I had same crummy battery life. I followed the calibration instructions and i went from about 5-6 hr batt life to ( right now im at almost 11hrs with 66% battery left on wifi with moderate use). Ill test tomorrow on 4g only and see how it does. I would get like 4-5 hrs before.

I am running the latest humble and my battery drops really fast. If I go into task manager and clear my RAM, I get better battery. I calibrated per the instructions as well about a week ago or so and saw no improvement. Please note that I have not been scientific about it at all.
Stopping Data obv helps a million and clearing RAM seems to help as well.
EDIT: I am recalibrating in case it was not done properly before. Hopefully it will help. I am hopeful!
I charged my battery to full, booted into clockwork recovery and wiped my battery stats.
When I rebooted my phone it shows a 73% charge?

If you are on humble 1.x then that means your battery stats were way off. Basically your battery still needs 23% more charge before its full... thus better battery life... because you had a miscalibrated battery, your phone is erroneously reporting a full charge... charge it back to 100% then discharge fully then charge all the back up

I'm on Gummy Charge GRE, but I assume the same reason?
I exchanged my battery at verizon. So far it seems better. Ive let it drain and am recharging now. I will also try uninstalling g+ if the new batt hasnt solved the problem. I will post back with an update.

I switched out my battery 2 days ago, and I'm still getting under 6 hours with moderate use.
Has anyone had luck with ROMs drastically improving battery life? I can't imagine it being the phone itself, but I might try exchanging it too.
EDIT: it seems like the new battery charges a bit faster. My old battery would take around a minute for one percentage gain. Can anyone comment on their charge times?

Battery drains unusually fast while screen off?

Last night before I went to sleep the battery was around 94% after an hour of solid use from a full charge.
I woke up today about 9 hours later and the battery was at 55%. It's been about two hours since then and I'm all the way down to 30% with only about 20-30 minutes of solid use.
What's up with that? Any ideas as to what I can do to fix it?

-Battery calibration, basically drain to 0%, then back to 100% on single charge.
-Try custom rom
-Might be radio, try flashing different found in development thread
-app or widget installed recently?
-look in battery use under settings menu to find what is eating up battery consumption, in your case likely something via cpu consumption (ie not display use)
What is your current set-up?
Check out battery drain threads in general section.
I'm working on battery calibration right now, this is my first day with the phone (I got it about 24hrs ago, actually). I'm gonna let it die then charge it to full.
I'm on a custom ROM right now, QuickWiz v1.0.3. It's blazing fast, no cool features though. I miss my CM7 that I had on my Inspire but the CM7 alpha was a bit too buggy for me.
I'll check into flashing some other radios in a few and I suppose it could be the weather widget I installed. I'll check that and see if it's syncing too often or something.
That's the funniest part. I just looked and I have 1h51m of screen on time (Mostly around 35% brightness, give or take a bit) and it's taking the majority of my battery at 31%. Right under it is Dolphin Browser HD at 13%. I might just swap to another browser, any recommendations? Last under that is the Android OS at 12%, then everything else is under 10% - Cell Standby, Speed Test, Market, then down to 5% which shouldn't matter.
are you using a cpu governor such as system tuner or setCpu? if you are OC'd, id suggest also cpuSpy to determine how long your device is in each state(clock speed)
I am OC'd. i have a setcpu profile for screen off that cuts it down to ~54/400MHz when the screen is off, set to conservative as well.
Hmm, if I had to guess, check the radio. I've had the problem before. As far as browsers go, I like Dolphin HD, just make sure you completely exit out of it when not using, otherwise it can be a resource hog on idle. Since you haven't had the phone long, reflash your rom of choice too if you get such a drive, that has fixed battery issues for me also.
I love my battery life using TPC's ROM with DaG's kernal. I'm also using TPC's CPU zip to govern and set CPU speeds 192-1782MZ without the use of third party programs. Some see zero battery loss when idle over night. I lose maybe 5%.

I installed a new radio with 8% battery left before I went to a birthday dinner. That 8% lasted me through light to moderate use at the dinner for about an hour and a half before, and I got back with 3% remaining.
I also froze a bunch of bloatware which could have also been taxing my battery. I'll wait another few days of use before I flash any other ROM's/Radios to make sure I'm not happy with the battery life and past that, I guess I'll just have to return it for a new battery or an LG Nitro HD instead, if the dev scene starts to pop up for that phone.
Can you link me directly to the CPU script zip?
what was the radio???
I just got the QuickWIz a few days ago and Im having the same battery drain problem while screens off.. its getting on my nerves

I did not charge my battery for 8 hours

hi all
i got my new w8 last week and i did not charge it for 8 hours ...
when i got it i straight
-root it
-install a new rom
-and bring it out
-all in 40mins or so
is it a factor?
cause now my battery only last 4 hours before going to 0%
while my sister's w8 (same model ) have 60% battery after 5 hours .ck ..
really scared man cause 4hours battery life is unusable
even in stock it's still draining ...
specs -
w8
stock kernel / rom
will buying a new battery help?
Just recalibrate it. Turn it off and charge 'till full, boot into recovery and wipe battery stats, turn the phone back on and use it until it turns off by itself.
Try calibrating the battery... but I must also add that I flashed some ROMs and when I restored the backup of my original ROM, the battery life was absolutely horrible and the phone kept overheating. I flashed MIUI and now it's like a new battery again.
there are some free battery calibration apps in market too. some latest works too.
battery calibration is very god
Very unlikely that you did any permanent damage. But I would be sure to do a few full charge cycles. As in charge to 100% and leave it plugged in for a while, and then allow to drain all the way to shut down.

Is this really as good as my battery life can get?

I recently got a Sensation, flashed Inquisition, Sense Faux Kernel, undervolted about -50 to -75, and bought an 1900mA Anker battery, and after a few days my battery life can last almost the entire day. For example, yesterday it lasted 13 and a half hours with 2 hours and 30 mins display on (which was about 70% of total battery usage. I have brightness at about 40%. What really gets to me is how the battery drains really fast once it hits 20% or so.
I've attached my battery usage from being unplugged for a few hours.
try bricked kernel. it using 25mA when in sleeping mode no need of any apps

I used to have the same issues earlier.
The fast draining from 20% is because of
Improper battery calibration which needs some time to asjust(it took 6 cycles for me).this I can confirm you because once my phone switches off because of no power left and when I plug on the charger the battery percentage goes upto 15% in just 1 min also this fast 20% drain is always attributed with last longing 100% change ( I mean battery stays at 100% even you've used your phone like for 30min with screen on all the time)
sent from my blazing fast pyramid through sonic waves
I flashed Bricked kernel last night and unplugged my phone at 4am. Currently, after being on battery for 6 hours 48 mins my battery is down to 57% with only 15mins of actual use/display on...I have system tuner and battery widget and can provide logs if anyone would like to further assist me in pinpointing why my battery sucks.
Is there an app or process keeping your phone awake or using CPU in the background? System Tuner Pro can help you diagnose this.
Also, try a clean install of your rom, stick with stock kernel and check. Re-download your apps one by one from market, checking for a few hours after each.
It should be possible to get standby drain of 1-2% ans 1.5-2 days battery with moderate use I do.
