3G problem in SNS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks, I using SNS form 4 months. I am not able to see any option related 3G data option in "Mobile Network Settings" screen.
I am in India.
Android Version 2.3.3
My network provider operates GSM Tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900) or Quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900).
Any additional information also appreciative.

the original model i9020 only works on 1700/2100 for 3G
and quad band for voice
possibly that's why you are unable to get 3G
you might want to sell it and get the AT&T version of SNS that operates on the 850/1900 for 3G

mine is i9020 but it will support for quad band 900 and my network provider is operating at Quad 900. If I am wrong correct me please.

the AT&T version is the I9020A and should work on the proper frequencies. Keep in mind that voice and data use separate bands.

well true

it does suppose to work on 900 for 3G
did you configure the APN settings for your cell phone provider?

By default APN's are configured by network provider. I am getting only EDGE connection. I have tried with *#*#4636#*#* and tried to change preferred network type to "WCDMA only" and "WCDMA Preferred" where default network type is "GSM/CDMA auto". But everything is in vain.
My network provider is Airtel. Any suggestions?

"My network provider operates GSM Tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900) or Quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900)."
You have given us only the network's GSM bands. Not the 3G ones.
If it DOES support 3G, then check those bands. If it doesn't support 3G, then, well... it's pretty obvious why it doesn't work.

[Q] Not getting 3G

Can someone please point me in the right direction? I'm a newbie and really have no idea where to start. i did try searching the forum before starting a new thread.
I have a Nexus S which I bought in the states. I live in the Caribbean and my provider finally upgraded the network to 3G. My phone will not pick up the 3G network and still shows EDGE.
I was told that I need to root the phone or something with ROM before I can get the 3G network.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance for your help.
is the model nexus s radio frequency compatable with your providers 3g frequency? for example.. 9020t(tmobile) ns wont recieve 3g on atts network, amd a 9020a(att) ns wont recieve 3g on tmobiles 3g network.
Is the model number the baseband verison, if it is my model is I9020XXKD1, build number GRJ22.
I'm not sure what my providers 3G frequency is but will try and find out.

KD1 is the radio. i have the same radio version, so you have a i9020t. you need the same bands as tmobile.
these are the 9020t bands..
Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700
HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps)

[Q] Does huawei ideos support T-Mobile 3g?

Hi
I was told this would be a better forum for this question.
I have a huawei ideos (older non X6 version) and supposedly it is unlocked. It works with 2g/edge. It does not work with t-mobile 3g. I have looked for APN information and the info downloaded to the phone when I connected to t-mobile network is identical to what is listed on the net.
ie. I added
MMSC: http<colon><twoslash>mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
xxx added because I can not post urls.
Things which are odd. When choosing access network, it does not say T-mobile 3G. It only says T-mobile 2g, Att 2g and Att 3g. According to the net this phone supports the frequencies for tmobile.
gsm link for u8150 not allowed.
shows HSDPA 900 / 2100 / AWS
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 / 1700
And the wikipedia entry for tmobile
shows
1700 MHz/2100 MHz UMTS (W-CDMA)/HSPA 4G (formerly 3G[31]) 2006 2008 (3G), 2010 (Marketed as 4G) First carrier in the U.S. to deploy services on AWS frequencies. Markets HSPA+ as "4G". UMTS band IV
Not sure if HSPDA spec is same as HSPA though.
I did the trick where you enter #*#*4636*#*#* and checked phone settings. I changed the setting from CDMA to GSM auto (PRL). I also tried to hit menu and select radio band, but it pulls up an empty "Set GSM/UMTS Band" dialog. There is nothing to select.
I guess my question is, does this phone support 3G for t-mobile and if so, what setting am I missing?
thanks in advance.

I got an email from Huawei support
Hi,
Just as another data point. I got an email regarding this issue from Huawei support. They said an unlocked phone from one provider may not fully support 3g on T-Mobile. I asked them what he meant by not fully support.
Here is an excerpt from the Huawei email:
This phone is capable to be used in 3G that is correct, however if the phone is unlocked from the original provider it may not be fully compatible on 3G on the different providers network.

three more datapoints
Hi
I got another note from Huawei. They said they don't support unlocked phones.
I talked to t-mobile support. They said the u8150 uses PPP and not RMNET. I have never heard of RMNET, and that the phone would only support 3G if it was rooted.
This seem like BS all around to me. T-mobile and Huawei.
I did test my phone with a friends tmobile sim and the phone behaved the same. ie. edge only.
Some more datapoints
Hi
This phone is available in two different frequency capabilities. Considering mine can see the ATT 3G network, it must be using the second set of frequencies. This second set is listed as usable by T-Mobile as well. Here is the info:
From the huawei spec sheet.
At the top it shows
UMTS 900/AWS/2100MHz or
UMTS 850/1700/1900/2100MHz;
EDGE/GSM/GPRS: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
According to Wikipedia
ATT
850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
700 MHz LTE 4G
T-Mobile
850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1700 MHz/2100 MHz UMTS (W-CDMA)/HSPA 4G (formerly 3G[31])
When I connect to wireless networks, I see three choices:
T-Mobile 2G
AT&T 2G
AT&T 3G
So I am guessing my u8150 is using the second UMTS set of frequencies:
1. 850 (since it sees two edge networks and that is only available in the second set.)
2. 850 and 1900 (since it see's AT&T 3G and it is also in the second set)
This second set of frequencies is also used by T-Mobile so I don't understand why this phone can not connect to T-Mobile 3G using my simcard or my pals.
It's all about the supported 3/4g bands. Most carrier Androids only support their networks spectrum's. Check gsmarena to ensure compatibility.
Hi,
Thanks for the info. Maybe I don't understand, but I thought gsmarena showed this phone as using both the Att and Tmobile bands. I remember when I had nexus ones was that one version was for ATT 3G and one was for TMobile 3G. I'm guessing that the 8150 is similar with the exception that huawei has not published accurate docs. ie. their docs say both frequences for all phones when in reality its two different model phones with only one label.

I apologize for not reading all of your posts
This isn't BS. It's the same issue facing Cricket phones attempting to connect on Verizon. I'm not fully up to speed but it looks like RMNET needs to be added via the kernel (edit sources and compile).
The below thread isn't specific to Tmo but it should give you some insight.
[04JAN][TMOUS]CMYLXGO's Stripped & Squashed Stock Desire HD[KERNEL:gauner1986][RMNET]
This is what Huawei meant by "may not be supported". However, if the phone connected to Tmo with SIM then it's already carrier unlocked. You now face the above issue plus prl, etc.
You face a long road ahead. My suggestion, sell the Huawei and buy a used Tmo Android.

[Q] Using 3g Argentina (Movistar) [WCDMA 850?]

Hi! I've bought this phone (SGH-T959V) from T-Mobile on USA, and when I went to Argentina, I found that the carrier that I have (Movistar) mixes the frequencies or something like that.
It uses GSM 850 / 1900 and UMTS 850 / 1900. By default, my phone can't use 3g (neither HSDPA) from this carrier.
Dialing *#*#197328640#*#* And going to Network Control > Band Selection, I can choose which frequencies to enable / disable.
If I disable GSM 850, and enable all the rest, I can get to use 3g on the 1900 Mhz, but I get much lower signal.
The frequencies that I can enable / disable from this menu are:
GSM 850
GSM 900
FCS 1800
PCS 1900
WCDMA 2100
WCDMA 1700
WCDMA 1900
I don't know how this works, I want to use my phone and be able to use 3g / HSDPA / HSDPA+ / 4g if possible..
I think that I need to find a way to enable WCDMA 850 on my phone.. Is it possible?
I am using the last upgrade from Kies (Gingerbread) 2.3.6
Do I have to flash a new modem? I've searched for available modems for this phone, but none of them say anything about enabling WCDMA 850 frequency
When I go into Settings - Wireless and network - Mobile networks - Network mode it has a GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)
Have you tried that?
Yes, I've tried that, that option is enabled!
In the GL9003L model (Samsung Galaxy S too) from this country, the WCDMA 850 option is enable (also the WCDMA900). Isn't there a way to add that frequency to my phone >.< ?
The hardware doesn't support UMTS 850 which you said is used by your carrier's 4G. You won't be able to use this phone on their 4G network.
Buh, so there's no way to change the frequencies it uses?
Sucks I can't use 3g (not 4g, 3g!!!) on my country
No you won't be able to. According to this page, these are the frequencies available on the phone:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_4g-3719.php
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100
Click to collapse
Your network will have to be running on exactly those frequenices to get 3G/4G
I think that is wrong.. I have another carrier that works on the 850 / 1900 band and I CAN user their 3g (mostly because I can connect to the 1900 band..), but I can't use HSDPA+.
So:
with one carrier, Movistar, that uses UMTS 850 / 1900 I can't use 3g, it only connects to the EDGE network, and when I dial *#0011# with the GSM bands disabled it says that the 3g service is limited and I can't use it at all.
With the other carrier, Personal, that uses the same bands, I can use 3g on the 1900 band, but can't use HSDPA or the 850 band.
Also, from the #*#*193728640#*#* menu I can choose the UMTS 1900 band.
I've a similar problem the difference is a got 3G but not 4G and can't figure out what is going on. I'm with digicel and the only use 1900 wich is already enabled. I once tried movistar and had the same problem I suggest you another carrier
This's my problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515877
Do not trust phonearena as it has wrong information about our device frequencies that it can use.
umts 1700,2100,1900
So basically no, you won't get anything else than edge on those 850/900 frequencies.

[Completed] [Q] Problem in getting 2G/3G services on my LG G2 320S

I got this korean version of lg g2 320s. This is for the SK Telecom carrier in S Korea. When I use this in India, I am able to use only gprs on this. I have tried setting the apns manually but not able to get 2G or 3G to work.
When i go to network settings it shows only 2 options for Network Mode. first is LTE preferred and second is 3G only. My carrier Idea says i need to select wcdma which i don't see.
I went thru some forums before posting here and tried 5457#*320# i tried changing band selection but still my device wont get 2G or 3G signal.
Then I thought this problem may be because of the OS, so I rooted my phone and installed Cynogenmod 12 custom Lollipop ROM for my phone.
Now I see following options to select for the preferred network type:
WCDMA preferred
GSM only
WCDMA only
GSM auto(PRL)
CDMA auto(PRL)
In spite of selecting WCDMA preferred my phone shows network type as "GPRS". I tried changing the bands but it also didn't help.
These are the bands I see in radio switcher.
Euro Band (GSM-900/DCS-1800/WCDMA-IMT-2000)
USA Band (GSM-850/PCS-1900/WCDMA-850/WCDMA-PCS-1900)
For India following networks a re supported.
2G capabilities -- GSM 900, GSM 1800
3G capabilities - UMTS 2100
4G capabilities - LTE 1800, LTE 2300
It would be great if you can guide me to the right forum to get some pointers
Thanks in advance.

T-Mobile FREQ that work.

Just wanted to post this as I'm at T-Mobile user and just recently found out that they also use Band 5. So we will be able to use at least Bands 2, 4, 5, and 12. T-Mobile LTE Bands Now what would be awesome would be able to add band 66 or even convert a band. Now sure if thats possible, just wishful thinking.
Been reading about tmobil and sprint for assurance wireless all day just seen your post thank you. Trying to port number to k40 phone but uses sprint towers and sim but am getting closer and closer. Useful info. Here is the site info I found right before this post:
In most markets the T-Mobile 3G / 4G network operates in the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) 1700/2100 MHz band and/or the Personal Communications Services (PCS) 1900 MHz band using Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology. T-Mobile also operates in the 700 MHz band in some markets. 5G devices on T-Mobile’s network must support either 660 MHz (low-band) or 28/39 GHz (mmWave). In order to connect to the T-Mobile 3G / 4G network a device must support UMTS and HSPA technology in the AWS 1700/2100 MHz band and PCS (1900) band. The T-Mobile 2G network operates in the Personal Communications Services (PCS) (1900) band. To connect to this network a device must support GSM technology in the PCS 1900 band
so now i know which towers sprint and assurance can work on for on this much beter phone once i change some settings which i am hoping can be done all by using the built in phone code and changing the settings and adding a custom rom recovery with the use of no PC via ENGINEERING MODE. Any ideas or thoughts, or should I not have wasted your time.
