I have spent the past 2 days trying to root my phone following the steps in the "theunlockr" guide for the MyTouch 3G 1.2.
I have had zero luck moving past the 2nd step. I keep getting the "Wrong model ID" error, and after refollowing the steps to create the goldcard numerous (10 at least, on 3 different computers, 2 running Windows 7, 1 XP, and also with 3 sepperate memory cards), I have gotten nowhere. If anybody has anything to add that I might be missing, I would be very thankful.
The unlocke guide bricked my device his sappimg is apparently outdated , I would recommend using the one on here. Also the goldcard that worked for me was a 2gb PNY. I got it at best buy.
Are you making sure to copy the number right? And have you watched his video? The video helps alot.
i watched the video, and made sure numerous times that the number was correct. i did read somewhere that the sappimg he was using was incorrect, but while trying to find the correct one, every link i found lead right back to the same one that he had posted.
also, where would i find the MyTouch 3G 1.2 sappimg file that you are talking about?
Here is the sappimg. You need, and remember if something does brick I'm not responsible, I'm just provided links hahaha.
Wait nevermind it says since I'm a new user I can't post links yet. Have somewhere I can send it to? Email?
Also don't download the recovery he has on his site (unlockr). Amon ra has posted a NEW version which is 1.7
yet the guide on this site says to use version '1.5.2G sapphire' just google search it. And remember make sure to download the one for 32a and that it says 'G' or else your screwed. And you can get the stock rom from this site too. Il see if I can find the link
Also Sorry for late replies. Typing on an iPod
Just sent it to you by email.

found that just a little before you sent it, and it also did not work. I'm going to look at work tomorrow and see if I can find a 2Gb Kingston card, since that seems to be the one that everyone has the best luck with (all 3 of the ones i tried are sandisk)

I think there lies the problem. I tried 2 different Sandisk cards and they didn't work, I switched to a 2GB Transcend card and it worked. Good look with rooting.
best buy used to carry kingstons, they dont anymore.
and when i tried a sandisk...same thing,,...didnt work.
what worked for me was a 2gig PNY from best buy.
BUT i did see a 2gig kingston at the tmobile store.
Walmart.com has 2GB Kingston for 7.88 (or 8.88, can't remember, plus I get 10% off for working there), but we do not carry them in my store. bought a PNY 2GB and going to try that first, hopefully it works.
well, the PNY 2GB card did not work, so now I get to attempt to find a Kingston 2GB card...
Sorry about the news. its weird certain cards work for some and not for others.
and yeah i remember checking walmart for a kingston. you have them online?
also when the guide says to copy 00000000-00000170.
you do copy the whole 00000170 line? and not just a small part of it?
just asking because i made that ^mistake^ when i first tried
AND-- when i thought my gold card wasnt working because it said "no sappimg.zip-not found, cannot load"
i decided to let it site after it finished THEN something else popped up saying "would you like to update?"
i guees it found it after it failed to.
and a Kingston card is a no go... I couldn't possibly follow the steps any closer. my device is recognized in cmd... i copy the code down, use the reverser, then use that code to get my goldcard sent to my e-mail. only possible thing that i can think of is that when I get the goldcard e-mail, it says "Here is your G1 goldcard". now, I do not have a G1, however, there are other people who have used the same website/method (learned by reading the comments) with their mytouch 1.2, and they didn't have any issues rooting their phones. Honestly, does anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong? as far as I can tell everything is working, but i keep getting the stupid "Model ID Incorrect!" error.

i was copying the whole 00000170 line, including the little section on the far right with the ".........."
im out of clue. except im guessing it also replaced the first two numbers zeros? or it didnt and you replaced them yourself?
Wait okay try this. might work! i hope it does. this helped me. last ditch effort.
okay Recreate the goldcard and put it into the phone when finished, plug phone into USB, make sure USB debugging is ON. next at the top where your notifications show up . pull it down the notification screen., now click on the thing saying your connected through USB, Should prompt you to "mount" your sd card. click "mount".
your device will now be recognized as a removabkle disk. find which removable disk it is, (for me it was disk G) now click on the removable disk (which is really your sd card) and copy/paste the sappimg. onto the Remov. disk. DO NOT place in any folders.
the first 2 digits were automatically replaced for me when it reversed.
ok, so im not really sure why exactly, but i guess waiting a few days allowed the sappimg to work, even when using the damn 512MB Sandisk card I had sitting around. i ran it through the process of running the sappimg update, and have stopped right there for now. not really sure where to go from there.
I'm looking to be able to run 2.1 on my phone, and the ROM I'm thinking to go with is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673394. Now, me being a complete noob and not knowing all the lingo and whatnot, I am assuming that the ROM is basically, in the end, the version of Android, and the features that it has that I choose to run (correct me if im wrong). Now, since I am looking to be able to run Android 2.1, CyanogenMod 5.0.7-Stable Eclair 2.1 is the route I want to go (and constant updates are nice). According to the description, it is made for the 3.22 series radio. on my fastboot screen, my radio version is 3.22.20.17. Is it still necessary to flash the radio since it already says its a 3.22 series? My guess is yes, and that I have to make sure it is a 3.22 radio, otherwise the rom will not work, but I want to be 100% sure. not trying to brick my phone, don't think I can handle firing up the old 2008 Sidekick again.
P.S.
at this point, do I still need to use the 512MB Sandisk (Gold Card), or do I still need to use it until the radio/SPL are flashed and the new recovery is in place? How about when I install the ROM? does the ROM load off of the memory card when you start your phone (therefore needing to be on the memory card I choose to use as my normal, everyday use memory card), or does it save it into the system until you follow the steps to change the ROM you are running (if you choose to)
SUCCESS!!
I guess what I was doing wrong was it was not a Friday? not really sure to be honest. I gave up on following the process that I was using for the gold card and instead found a post in one of the comments for a ROM about a program that does basically everything for you, without having to open multiple webpages and stuff (GoldCardTool.cab). pretty straight forward (just read the readme in the .zip file).
I then was able to flash my radio, hboot, and recovery. loaded up the Amon_RA recovery tool, loaded in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673503 ([ROM][MT3G 1.2/LE Fender] CR_Slide2G1_v1 [come get your daily driver]. After approx 10-15 mins of loading, I am now back at my home screen.
Now the fun begins... reinstalling/setting up some of the key apps i was using!
Hello, thank you for reading this, to start with.
First off, here are the specs of the phone I am asking about:
Galaxy S 4G exclusive from T-mobile
Model #: SGH-T959V
Firmware: 2.2.1
Kernel:2.6.32.9
Build #: FROYO.VUVKD1
If that's not enough please ask.
Back Story: Phone was given to my ex by his mother. It was for T-mobile, which don't have good plans for pre-paid/pay as you go in my area. So I was asked to make it work for ATT. I rooted using Superoneclick, and then did the hex voodoo and unlocked the phone. It worked for a few months, no problem. There was no data plan so no phone internet was acessed, wifi was but only rarely. It DID work.
Then, the other day, my ex dropped it. It worked just fine for a minute or two, but now is stuck with no service, and such. No imei number. No phone number. Nothing. Searches for the provider. Sim card has been replaced just in case. I've restored and re-rooted, but i couldn't re-unlock the sim # as the hex editor couldn't find the code. AND the sim doesn't ask for an unlock code when inserted.
I have googled and searched my tushie off to figure this out. All my answers are bad flashing of roms and such, and the last anything that was done to it out of ordinary use was me unlocking it, and it worked for months.
Keep in mind that i haven't a clue what flashing a rom means, or what odin is (i read that several times, haven't a clue what it is), and I know how to follow step by step instructions as long as they use reasonably understandable terms to the android nooblett.
I am currently running on an ubuntu laptop, so downloading and running anything means I download, put it on a flash drive, and install it or run it on a windows computer that doesn't have internet access (long story, i'm rambling as it is).
Some extras:
I did not do any backups, because everything worked for the longest time anyways.
I've tried a few things involving nv_data.bin and the like, but it seems they don't exist or are hidden from my silly self.
I have to re-root and such as I've just performed a factory reset to see if that would fix the issue.
I am extremely tired so I'll likely do nothing tonight, including responding, as I have to work tomorrow and lots of other things.
I am a rambling idiot, feel free to mock me for it, but i do try and give out as much information as I can.
Any questions? If not, please, please, please tell me an answer that doesn't involve sending this phone back, because it's long out of warranty and has passed through many hands (the previous people did not like t-mobile either...).
And thank you for reading the ramblings of this idiot.
Are you sure it's not a hardware issue? I dropped my old iPhone 3G and it stopped recognizing my SIM unless it was placed just right. Have you tried any other SIM cards in there? Take a look at my SGS4G carrier unlocker (link is in my signature) and see if it scans through your nv_data.bin file correctly. I never liked that people encourage direct editing of that file. :/
Have you tried seeing if Samsung Kies mini will recognize your phone? Since you still seem to be on factory stock and did a factory reset.... download Kies mini, plug your phone in and see if it will recognize it. Kies mini - in case you are unaware is Samsung's software to update our phone.
If it recognizes your phone - try to do the upgrade to Gingerbread. If it will upgrade to Gingerbread, it might rewrite your efs folder - which is where the IMEI and phone information is stored. If it doesn't rewrite the efs folder... it shouldn't matter if your phone is out of warranty as Kies mini - you will say and not mention the other stuff you have done - messed it up during the upgrade... which is happening to people more than you would think. Take it back to where you purchased the phone and give it a shot. Or try contacting Samsung. Many have done that as well. You need a computer you can download Kies mini to and do the upgrade... in other words - a computer with internet access you can work on.
o You may start with another Factory Reset
o Download Kies mini if you do not already have it. < - - Click link here for Kies mini - When you follow this link you will see two tabs - 'Manuals' and 'Software' - click software and download.
o Make sure your phone is charged.
o Make sure USB Debugging is off.
o Start Kies mini on the computer.
o Make sure phone is not connected to computer yet.
o In USB Settings on phone select ‘Kies (Firmware update)’ if it is not set to ask every time.
o Plugged in phone, let device drivers install on computer. You will see a notification on your computer when complete.
o Then Kies mini will recognize the phone.
o Hit upgrade and wait.
o Phone will eventually reboot. Check your IMEI.

You owned an iPhone FB? Damn!
FB is one of the best on here... however, if you are on stock you should try an upgrade if Kies mini will recognize your phone. I have read flashing stock - in this instance via Kies mini - has many times rewritten the efs folder for people with IMEI problems. Either way - if he is on stock everything he can take it in to T-Mobile and ask for you?
Thoughts on that FB?

I still have it lying around and it's bricked. I wanna try flashing it again with another USB cable but I can't find my spare.
Hmm, haven't ever tried the kies mini approach but it's worth a shot, especially if it'll restore the /efs directory.
If it IS fully stock, then yes take it in to T-Mob and see if they'll give you a replacement and next time don't go editing anything in /efs directly.
Thank you everyone. I will try these things later today. Like I said the only things I've personally done to it are root and unlock. I dunno what happened and its possible it could be hardware, but ill try updating it through kies first. Again thank you, ill keep you updated on what happens.

Hi,
If the problem is solved for you please edit the title in the OP and add [SOLVED] to it

Ok Guys/Gals, I'm stumped...
Followed the instructions. Mini Kies on computer that works with it (windows vista 32 bit), waited til kies told me to plug in the device. I did. Drivers installed. I waited. And waited. And waited. And waited a bit more. Then it pops up for me to enter a pattern. No pattern had been established with that phone before. So I set one up on the phone, and redid all that, thinking that's all I had to do. Asked me for the pattern again, I put it in.
Here are the steps i'm taking.
Mini kies asks me to plug in my phone.
I do it (this is the phone in the thread, not my actual phone).
And I wait. A while, actually. Somewhere in the line of 1-5 minutes.
And now i get a little popup. "Pattern" the header reads. "The mobile phone is locked. To connect, use the mouse to enter the pattern as specified by the mobile phone." Followed by the pattern unlocker.
I place the pattern i created on the phone in to the one on the computer. It must not be right (as there was none to begin with, and i had to create new and redo this whole step) because now it reads:
Firmware version: device cannot be upgraded
Firmware upgrade: (this is a blank nothingness)
Agh, don't get me wrong, i love this stuff, but after dealing with a defaulty U-scan computer all day (i am a cashier...), computers are not on my good list.
Please help ?
Ok, so after hours of crying, moaning, cursing, yelling at the phone, cursing SD cards for being so small, cursing the better phone for being more retarded than it's cheapo brother the Prevail, I fixed it.
I was so frustrated, i reset everything, again. Still wouldn't work with kies. Checked everything. Made sure I was doing everything right. Googled every last letter i could find about my issue.
I wanted to throw the phone, but instead, i took the battery out, the sim card out, and the SD card out, and cursed each and every one of them out. Before I continue, let me say, that I'd done this before, for approximately the same time, if not longer. Then, i threatened their inanimate lives and put them back, and tried to do the kies update. Turned on the phone, not expecting any miracle of any sort. Suddenly the phone's alive with all sorts of missed calls and texts and who knows what else. So while the phone is no longer rooted, it's still unlocked, and works like a dream again.
TL;DR version? Took the battery, sim, and SD card out for a while. Even though I'd done this as the first thing i did when this issue started happening, perhaps yelling at them made the difference.
Thank you all for putting up with me and my rambling idiocy.
Awesome, glad you got it working again. Maybe we need to put "threatening sdcard/SIM card" methods into the wiki...

I threaten my phone with a trip to the recycling yard all the time. It works.
And to the OP glad you got it figured out. A few people with the imie issue have used the pull battery wait ten approach and it seems to work.
Glad you fixed it.
I strongly suggest you make a copy of your efs folder in case you have an IMEI issue again. I keep a copy of my efs folder on my external sdcard and my PC.
I have a Sprint Nexus S 4G that I've recently rendered without service or USB connection as a result of a fastboot accident. I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3 (Dooderbutt-aosp-v-5 build), but have tried restoring multiple backups on CM7 to no avail. Wiping all user data in CWM doesn't fix it either. I have also tried flashing the LC1 radio zip with no results.
The way I see it, my two best courses of action would either be to try and return to a stock ROM so that I can send the device in under warranty or to continue to try to fix it myself, which has been less than successful so far. Every process I have found online to return to stock seems to end in fastboot oem lock, which won't do anything for me as my phone doesn't show up in fastboot devices, file explorer, or seem to be recognized by my computer in either Ubuntu or Win 7. I've tried connecting on my friends' computers with the same results. I've also tried using another USB cable. No dice.
Sorry if I missed something obvious before posting. I tried to do a lot of research online and have reached the end of what I know what to do. Any suggestions?
Bump.
After some more researching, it appears that there is no way to lock the bootloader except through USB connection with a computer. Does this mean I'm out of luck? Any suggestions as to how to solve this issue? Since my first post, I've flashed ICS 4.0.4 with no improvement on the above symptoms. Also, auto-rotation doesn't seem to work. My Baseband version in About is listed as Unknown. Does anyone have any clue? Replies would be greatly appreciated.
have you updated the android drivers on your computer? you wont be able to connect to fastboot without the drivers. you can get it here http://www.junefabrics.com/android/ do the free download(on your computer) then follow the on screen instructions.

I'm running Ubuntu, so from what I understand, I don't need any drivers. Prior to this fiasco, my computer recognized it as a storage device in the file system as well as a device in fastboot. It doesn't come up as either now.
I had a similar problem after I updated to ICS 4.0.3, what version of Ubuntu do you have, and does the device show up when you run lsusb?
Also, have you checked inside the usb connector to see if one of the pins is bent or damaged?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 and no, my Nexus doesn't show up in lsusb or anything else I seem to try. I have checked the pins in the connector of the phone and even bent them around a little bit, but I doubt that's the problem. Since it disappeared immediately after a bad flash, I'm fairly confident this is a software-induced error.
Ok, the only other thing I can think of is a bad kernel or baseband, but since you've tried several different roms, I don't think that's the problem (unless you put on one that's not for your model).
Sorry I can't be more helpful, hope you figure it out!
Thanks for your help anyway. To be clear, each rom has its own kernel and baseband, correct? Are those things I can flash independently of roms like the radio?
Found something, not sure if you've seen it already : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077168
This bit is especially interesting :
"*If your having problems after the radio flash......go to dialer:
Type in *#*#72786#*#*, put your msl in, and let it re-provision"
For the usb not connecting, I had the same problem. After trying every computer in the house, I grabbed a can of compressed air for electronics and blew out my micro usb port on the phone itself. There was a small piece of lint in there that was causing the connection to not be made. It's worth a try.

I'm attempting to try this work around, but I can't seem to find my msl. I've tried putting in an incorrect code and checking alogcat for it as well as the terminal output of getprop. Neither of these give me the number. Sprint mentions using this code for resetting your phone in this tutorial, but I can't for the life of me find the part of their site that shows the msl.
This is exhausting. I really appreciate all your guys' help though. Thanks so much.
Unfortunately, I never figured out how to solve the problem. I took my phone into Sprint the other day and lucked out on the repair technician. He was messing around trying stuff and had a moment of realization when he booted into Clockworkmod. Even though I had voided my warranty, he still let me replace the phone for the $35 fee. I walked out with a brand new Photon 4G. I'm so happy, it's like Christmas in May!
To others who have this problem: sorry, but I don't know what to tell you! Mine was probably bricked. The MSL number didn't connect the phone and neither did anything else I tried. Best of luck to you.
Hi guys, I'm having a problem rooting an HTC Aria that I recently acquired, and I'm not sure how to search for my answer. I guess Ill try to explain what happen as best as I know, since some things happened so fast I have no idea exactly what happened. Its also worth mentioning that I have no experience rooting android phones, but I'm not an idiot, so please don't be afraid to help because you think Im gonna be waste of your time.
I used the tool unRevoked with Reflash to inflict the damage. Things seemed to be going great, in fact at one point it even said this was a triumph. Somewhere towards the very end, it looked as if it complained about not finding a file on the sd. It was so fast I couldn't read it because I was looking at the computer at that time. Im not surprised it didn't find the file it was looking for since I had no sd card installed. The tutorial/procedure that I read was very detailed, so detailed that he sometimes took a minute to make sure the reader knew to double click the file to open it, yet there was no mention of absolutely needing an sd card for it to work.
Now when I re-run reflash, when I get to the point where you have to choose HBoot USB, it wont ever let me pick it. It just forces me to pick Fastboot or one of the other ones, spits out several lines of green text that is way too fast to read, then gives you the option to pick HBoot again. It never leaves this menu now, not by way of reflash anyway. I can still unplug and reboot my phone , and operate it like normal, but reflash wont go past that recovery menu. I did a factory reset, that didn't help. I also picked recovery on that menu. I browsed the options, but Im afraid to make another move at this point without some input. If someone could please maybe tell me what happened and how to proceed I would be very grateful.
Thank you
I have been getting desperate on an issue which I mention in another thread.
I wrecked my phone and got a replacement, got it back to a state I wanted, so that's all good... However, I need to send the damaged phone back by tomorrow (Thursday) or else TMO is going to slap me with a $850 fee.
The problem is that I need to copy the contents of the SD card. This isn't an unreasonable endeavor because the phone, from all appearances, works fine, other than the fact that about 5 seconds after it gets to the desktop, it goes black...but it continues to sound notifications, etc., so I know it is still functioning, albeit with no screen.
When I plug into my laptop using adb, it acknowledges the device, but says its "offline". From looking around the web reading others experience with this error, it doesn't seem like a "real" error. Solutions suggested are changing USB ports, reinstalling drivers, rebooting phone, etc., and the problem seems to go away for those users. However I have tried these solutions, and yet my device still is considered to be "offline".
I use ADB often enough that I never turn off USB debugging so that isn't an issue. But while I know how to push and pull files , or fastboot flash a recovery, I don't know much else about ADB. Is there any experts or ADB gurus who can suggest some other ideas about how I can get this USB convection working? Or at least run some diagnostic too see if in fact the SD card is damaged?
It is very important I get these files of my SD..they are attorney work product and notes regarding a transaction (and also several pictures from the night the phone was damaged) . I make regular backups to dropbox, but apparently not regular enough as my backup wasn't current when I damaged it.
Please ... I am looking for any suggestions. And further, I can't believe that ifthe sd card was in fact damaged, I should still be able to recover some portion of the files. Can one access the sd card when the phone isn't on? It seems rather counterintuitive to me for HTC to create this obstacle consisting the microSD is non-removable on the first place.
Any thoughts are very much appreciated.

Because he said it worked for five seconds I assumed that to be rom related and thought there might be a possibility that recovery would work. After I posted I saw other posts and realized he's pretty knowledgeable... Not too used to that.
