If I flash clockwork recovery is there a way to go back to the stock recovery if I wanted? Not unroot but just go back to the stock recovery in case I have to return the phone?

You could flash the stock nandroid of 2.3.1 in the Nexus s development section

Actually, if you're on 2.3.1, every time you reboot, the stock recovery is re-flashed as part of the boot-up process.
This is controlled by the script /etc/install-recovery.sh
What some people are doing is flashing clockwork, then renaming that script so that clockwork sticks. If you want to go back to stock (not sure why you'd want to), you would just un-rename the script.
If you haven't updated to 2.3.1 you'll have to flash a stock recovery image, which is simple via fastboot.
I have rooted the SNS using Clockworks recovery and then flashed it using the CM7 RC 4 mod. Now i am trying to restore the nandroid backup taken before the flashing. It fails saying the /cache partition not mounted.
Please help me how to revert this to the original android 2.3.3 GRI54.
If you have not tried this recovery, you may want to give it a go. Also try the fix permisions option.

I tired to do that but the only options it gives me is
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
there is no backup option.
You need to root your phone first and install clockworkmod recovery. After that you should have the option to backup your current rom. Search for superoneclick to root your phone then download rom manager from the market and flash cwm recovery from inside the app. After it downloads cwm recovery and installed. Boot into recovery then backup.

the explination that robertd0619 is accurate but, what i found most useful to root my vibrant is z4root 1.3.0 its very fast and easy
I rooted and installed CWM. I then did a nandroid backup of my current stock rom. Then I flashed sky icecream sandwich. Can I just go into CWM and flash my stock backup to get back to stock rooted with CWM, or do I have to go back through Odin?
Anytime you restore a nandroid backup it takes it back to exactly how you were when you made the backup
Unless............
Unless cwm screws up and you cant mount the internal sd. Then u must odin
Just a quickie...
Done a nandroid backup from within 4EXT recovery of my phone, which is stock 2.3.4, as I'm tempted to give one of the ICS custom roms a go.
These require flashing the ICS firmware before installing the custom ROM.
If I go back via the nandroid restore from recovery, does this restore the firmware or would that need re-flashing first?
No, it does not.

No it will not restore firmware, but if you keep a library of firmware on your SD card you can install as you need from recovery. Rename the PG58IMG files with a reference to the firmware so you don't get muddled up, then rename to PG158IMG as you need.
