hello nexus s comminuity. i previously had a telus fascinate which was good but also sucked because it has created soley 4 telus meaning only telus users could b a dev 4 that exact phone. ended up bricking it testing kernels with i9000 roms. then got a htc desire hich is were ive been 4 the past 4 months. greta phone, ez to do everything. i then decided to try the xoom with honeycomb. b4 i even rooted it, it was already soft rebooting. i then rooted it and it got worse. i had ther wifi verison so there was noway to restore and unroot. i then deleted the superuser apk and wiped and returned so it was still rooted but not noticable to a not anvanced user ie. the future shop girl. i then purchased a nexus s. just got in the door and its charging. ive used 2.3.3 on my desire plenty of times with diff roms specifically cm7. so i guess my wuestion is:
is there really a reason 4 me to root with a nexus s? every rom i seen in the dev thread was built from 2.3.3 and looks the same with afew tweaks. are there sense roms yet? what about gingersense? from the looks of things, a stock nexus s is the way to go. any1 have any advice as to if i should root or not?
Rooting will give you Voodoo sound and color, which is well worth it. I'd also recommend you trying MIUI, works really well and I've been using it as my daily driver for the past 2 weeks.
Not to mention, are there any reasons NOT to root?

they enhance your sound and color.
voodoo sound is amazing
there hasn't been a report of a brick for the Nexus S. its really hard to mess up rooting, this phone is the SIMPLEST phone out there to root.
the hardest part is installing the drivers for your computer to recognize the device
It's basically impossible to screw up rooting a nexus phone. They are purposely left open so all you have to do is type fastboot oem unlock and you're done. I'd definitely root it for the sound enhancements.

Yes. If you have no reason to root, which I don't see one for my needs, you shouldn't. Any app that requests root can do anything it desires. Which can be a bad thing for those that don't understand what that means and what apps they are installing do.
Those that want to root should ask why they want to root before doing so, and making sure its a valid reason and not just ZOMG haxx0r I gots root.

Unlocking the bootloader is NOT rooting! Please do not give advice if you do not know what you are talking about. Unlocking the bootloader is only the first step. You also need to install a custom recovery (cwk) now that you've unlocked the bootloader then install su through recovery.
Rooting also does not automagically give you 'sound enhancements'. You have to install a custom kernel (voodoo) to get there.

Sorry if this should be in a different thread. Not trying to get flamed. So I am coming from a captivate and am just wondering how is flashing stuff on the inspire different from the captivate? Typically most of my flashing was just done thru CWM on the captivate itself or thru ODIN. I know ODIN doesnt exist for the inspire, but what differences can I expect coming into? how do I get to recovery or download? Any answers on how the flashing experience is different would be much appreciated
Once you've rooted it's pretty much the same as captivate install rom manager and install Rom with cwm recovery. There isn't a need to flash back to stock. Just clear data and cache.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yup, clockwork mod makes life a hell of a lot easier.
And this restore a heck of a lot better than the captivate did. I don't even use titanium backup anymore. All my txt messages and apps automatically restores including wallpaper

Thanks guys, my only question is how to get CWM on this phone after root. Im assuming its thru a kernel?
same way you do it on the captivate get rom manager from the market. Install CWM Recovery.
There's no need for special recoveries like on the captivate as there's no lagfix craziness to deal with. HTC uses Android/Linux standard file systems

Totally agree, ill never get samsung again. I would probably flash a different rom on my captivate every other day to find out which one had what bugs and what didnt work correctly, lol. The Inspire is a lot harder to root then the captivate, but is well worth it when you do, for one roms are higher quality and all 100% working, even cm7 rc1. There is no download mode for inspire, you can manually boot into bootloader mode and from there you can enter CWM Recovery.
So i looked at the HTC hack kit, are there any better instructions for rooting? just didnt see anything laid out in that thread.
Another question for yall: On the captivate when wifi was active the 3g symbol would disappear. This doesnt happen on my inspire. Does that mean hspa is still running while im connected to wifi? Battery drain is my issue with this
there's a readme in the hack kit. Very easy to follow
There is youtube two part video walkthrough, thats what i used. I learn easier if i can see it happening.

On the vibrant (captivate) a bad kernel or Rom could mean boot loop and no hope of getting into clockwork and we would have to use odin. This doesn't happen on the inspire?
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
ive had boot loop happen twice so far and both times i manually went into boot loader and went to CWM recovery and wiped data and reflashed then everything was fine. The one time i reflashed and still got boot loop i just restored back up and then flashed and was good to go. I made a backup right after i rooted so i wouldnt have to do it again, i suggest you do the same just to be safe.

lol dont mind the hijacking. the more questions asked the better.
the market auto restores your apps when you sign in with your google account, i cant really explain how it does this, but it sure is nice.
when you check back up my settings when you sign into google for teh first time, it starts keeping a list of market apps you've installed and restores them if you do a factory reset. doesn't seem to catch all of mine all the time though.
still have some questions regarding Flash
I read the rooting thread as well as saw the video, what I could understand is that in captivate we were rooting and then upgrading the ROM.
But here we are rooting and the downgrading.. Are we loosing any functionality? Its little difficult to understand..
can someone pls help?
You are actually downgrading the ROM then rooting THAT. After you have root, and have clockwork mod recovery installed you can install any rooted rom you like. There are a few to choose from in the Dev section.
The current Android release on the Inspire hasn't been "cracked" yet so you need to downgrade to get root.

It's a Nexus, you can always root.
So I can root with the current root method with no problems?
Not to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to make an entirely new one and it's kind of a related question.
So I've never rooted my NS before and I'm on 2.3.4. Is there any way I can root without having to wipe my phone, or will I just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I've been perfectly fine without root up until now, but the new colors really bug me and would like to fix them.
Usually when you root data usually gets lost what are you trying save?. The only thing that u are going to be able to save are your contacts.

Not sure what the "current root method" is, but it's the same process as usual: flash ClockworkMod Recovery, mount /system, apply the su zip, done.
(with the usual caveats about doing things properly so the recovery patcher doesn't trigger and remove CWM just after you flashed it)
ok well this is my scenerio..
i just bought my nexus s yesterday.... i got the OTA 2.3.4 and updated it..
i just want to know the EASIEST process to root my nexus s as i am not adb literate. Every phone that i had has been rooted previously so i never had to root a phone but i am getting all these threads to root the nexus s and damn it has to do with adb which i have no clue how to use.. but once im rooted i can change rom change themes etc.. its just the rooting process.. well any methods are welcome..
p.s sorry to jack your thread man
the first time I used adb was yesterday to unlock my nexus s and it really wasnt too bad so you should be good
Will this guide work with 2.3.4 without wipe everything? (i havent unlocked bootloader) h**p://download-apk.blogspot.com/2011/05/tutorial-rooting-unlock-bootloader-for.html ? If it's not, is there any way to root my nexus 2.3.4 with stock rom without wipe? I would appreciate any answers. Thank you.

Rooting does not require wiping IF your bootloader is unlocked. An open lock is shown below the Google tag when booting if you're unlocked.
Unlocking bootloader will always wipe for security reasons.
Make sure to sync contacts before doing anything. Then start here

Hi I have a rooted lgl45c and accidently deleted my build prop is there an update.zip out there that will simply execute the comand to restore the default from /system/build.prop.back ?
I forgot to mention i have not flashed any custom roms etc as these phones come fairly bare bones and like a dummy i tried using recovery option so debug mode is definately not making adb not able to work.
thanks in advance

I know this is an old ass thread but I just wanted to vent my frustration about what a total piece of **** this phone is. There is no development for it either because no one gives a damn about this phone. I think I'd be a little less angry if there were decent working ROM's out. (There ARE a few from the crew over at Area51 but I couldn't get a single one to work on my particular device, which sucks because they look hella' cool).
LG LGL45C...I'm LITERALLY going to smash it into a million pieces as soon as I get my Boost "donor" phone so I can flash my E4GT over to Boost Mobile. I'll make a video just for kicks.

I checked all the other bricked threads and none have the same problem as me.
My HTC ONE X will not boot and or charge. I cannot get access to the bootloader or recovery.
My HTC ONE X had it's bootloader unlocked via the rogers htc-dev method. I also installed clockwork recovery. It is rooted also but you prob figured that already...
I pulled a bonehead move by flashing the MIUI rom the international one x by changing the update script to flash onto my phone. After it flashed it looked like it worked. When I left recovery and shut the phone off it would not turn back on.
I called AT&T they said they will switch it for me when they get a shipment but I want to keep this phone because the boatloader is unlocked and they might patch the rogers method.
Thanks in advanced.
P.S. I know how to use adb and other tools such as RUU and they did not work.

First of all, you should be able to get to H-Boot by holding volume down when turning it on.
Second of all, this is why they lock the bootloader in the first place.

H-Boot key combo is not working.
I have been flashing roms since the samsung moment, I built and modified roms on my EVO and ported roms from other phones to the EVO. I always had recovery to fall back onto to get my phone booting again. Even when I had the Xperia Play that required a PC to boot recovery I was still able to get the phone to work. This phone is strange that is will not even turn onto H-boot/Bootloader.

Thank God the dude at AT&T cannot get into the bootloader also to see that is was tampered with so they are giving me a replacement.

Honestly, not trying to call you stupid or something, but did you really think it was going to run on this phone when it was meant for another one? The GPU and CPU are completely different...
Anyway, I'm glad AT&T is replacing it for you. Hopefully if someone else bricks the same way then they will be able to get a replacement as well.
so you are smart enough to use adb, an RUU, unlock your bootloader, root, flash roms.......but you aren't smart enough to see the hundreds of posts saying that the international roms don't work on our phones??

My EVO was unbrickable too, I flashed a rom that was designed for the international version. It only contained system and other basic rom stuff, nothing that was crazy.
No idea why you wouldn't be able to boot into recovery then. I hope all HTC handsets aren't like this..

Ok, I have never been more tempted to throw a phone in all my life. This has me VERY irritated.
I got this htc one x on a hunch, was a good deal, seen great roms on here, thought it was a good idea. I've had nothing but trouble. Heres my deal:
I went to the htcdev site to get the boot loader unlocked. Im no dummy, I've gotten into LOTS of phones. This thing is crazy. I've watched 20 videos, used 3 different computers, NOTHING works. ALWAYS says Error Code: Invalid Bootloader Token Length.
Error Reason: The submitted Token appears to be the wrong length and won't work.
Now this isn't my first rodeo, I read, searched, paused videos made sure I was getting the same info selected, spaces, EVERYTHING that were showing between my screen and the youtube screens. This phone has taken the latest att update. Is this the problem? Has getting into the phone been cut out? Is there another way to get in and load roms? Should I ditch it for a galaxy?
You have supercid, right? The One XL can't have bootloader unlock without it. AT&T Doesn't like for people to use phones the way they're intended to be used
There is a new method for unlocking on the latest update over in general.

I've never owned a phone so hard to deal with... Everything I read says I need to be rooted, I need to have bootloader unlocked to root, different direction loops I cant seem to break... The noobproof all require bootloader unlocked... there is SO much info, it all points in different directions, and I cant make heads or tails out of it to be honest. I've been reading for 2 days and am about to pitch this thing as far as I can.
I cant find the directions for supercid, just what it does. I normally don't require hand holding... I have an upgrade coming in September.....

Newest update doesn't have this option. There's a root method in dev section, however you need linux to run the script. But that's easy to make a bootable CD just to run the script. After you root then dev unlock. Then you can proceed to either fastboot a recovery or use goo manager to install the latest. Then flash away...
I recommend you follow the S-off thread too... That way you don't need fastboot to flash boot.img. then if it came with 3.18 firmware, you'll also need to follow the touchscreen downgrade thread if you plan on using Aosp roms.
It's really not hard to do the last 2 steps, but I have to agree you need to go through an a$$load of steps to get the desired effect. But this phone is great with custom roms. Some call me crazy, but if I run carbon Rom tweaked it'll rival my buddies S4 no problem

The reason info conflicts is AT&T phones cant use htcdev unlock by AT&T request.
All other evita's can use htcdev fine.
So AT&T phones need root to change cid to pretend to not be an AT&T phone before they can unlock.

That will change you Cid so it no longer identifies your phone as an AT&T model. Then, and only then will you be able to use htcdev to unlock your phone.
