Hello everybody,
I just want to give my opinion about my new Nexus S.
I started on android long ago on my HTC Hero. I liked this mobile a lot, but we waited so long to get our update to 2.1, so I used custom rom like everybody. But custom rom are never stable as the original one.
that's why, when I decided to change my mobile, I choose the nexus S. To be sure to always get the google update.
Even I don't like samsung so much compare with HTC, the update part was too important for me.
So I bought the Nexus S two weeks ago. I expected that the hardware and the software match perfectly together.
But now I discover several problem which make me very disapointed.
First, the volume level for call is really too low. I can not hear what people say if I'm in the street.
second point, I can not open the youtube application.
Third point, google sky map doesn't work well, as well as google street view. There is a problem with the gyroscope.
The Nexus S is the mobile 100% google. It's should be a reference for everybody. I can not accept these kind of problems. These 3 points works very well on my old HTC Hero...
I should not be oblige to instal a custom rom just to let my mobile work normally! This it's the minimum we can expect for a google phone of this generation!
Do a lot of people have these problems?
Thanks for your answer.

Im on stock youtube works for me so does maps and every other map the volume used to be loud but went low i agree on that

My incall volume is to low as well pisses me off no way to fix it yet either Google needs to step it up and all these other phone makers

I agree. Kinda disappointed. Still like my HTC Magic and works well with custom ROM. Can't get my YouTube running and the hardware design is not that great. Only thing that makes up for the hardware us pure Google.

Hello everyone:
I don't set my expectations too high. I know that this is a new phone, and it is not without it's bugs, but it is an awesome phone and from reading others who were having issues, I wanted to get a Nexus S working right for me!
I purchased my first Nexus S at a local Best Buy.
Everything about the phone was fine, the battery life seemed good, it ran quickly, did not notice any lag or any other major problems. However, I did begin to notice the back-button being unresponsive, as many others have stated experiencing. From reading threads on XDA, the jury is still out on whether this is a software or hardware issue, but that some people were able to get a phone without the issue by returning it for a replacement.
So I did...
I exchanged for my second Nexus S at a local Best Buy.
This one was kind of odd. Took a little while the for the 'important system updates' notice to come up, so I had already synced with my gmail and had also manually updated google maps and a few other apps.
When I finally did install the system update and the phone booted, I got a systemcore process FC error off the bat. Not good news. Later on, all seemed well, but I noticed a lot of lag with using the GB keyboard (unresponsive at times), and also having difficulty with the end-call button to end a call in progress (again, unresponsive so I had to press it a bunch of times before it would respond). Also, the battery life did not seem to be nearly as good as the first Nexus S.
So... I turned it back to Best Buy, but they did not have another replacement. So I turned it in for a refund.
I called Best Buy toll-free number, told them about the trouble that I was having, and they waived the overnight shipping fee, took my order for a new Nexus S, and I got it via UPS the next day (just at the 24 hour mark)
With this phone, I booted the phone and chose skip to login/create a gmail account. Phone loaded up completely, and I was just signing into my gmail account when I got the 'important system updates' message.
I updated immediately. Everything went smoothly.
I have not noticed any problems so far. The phone runs smoothly. It had no FC upon first boot after the system update. The back button works as it should. I don't notice any lag with the keyboard. I pulled up engadget.com full site and did not notice any lag out of the norm, apart from it being slow to load as I'm working with the crappy Edge network here (who cares if there are 4G phones out when my area doesn't even have 3G yet and that is where I am mostly). I have also tested the ringtones. I moved some music to my SD Card. I downloaded/installed Ringdroid. I created a ringtone. I set the ringtone. I have rebooted my phone three times and my ringtone still works. I mounted and unmounted my SD card (even moved some files to it), and I still have my ringtone.
So, what was it? Was it three times the charm? Was it there was a bad batch at the local Best Buy? Was it that because of the volume of Best Buy over phone and online sales, you'll get a newer and better Nexus S going through that route? Was it because I installed the system update before doing anything else, including syncing my gmail? I'm not sure...
But I do know that I love this phone, and *knock on wood* it continues to work the way that it should, I'll be happy with it for a long time to come.
My advice for those who are experiencing the issues that I had with my first two Nexus S to try try again. I know it's disappointing that a customer would have to do that in the first place as it is time consuming and stressful, but in the end, there might be a happy ending with you and your Nexus S.
Glad everything is working out for ya. Luckily my first nexus s has been great from day one.

I have my second phone and it feels like the screen is less sensitive as on my first one. Unfortunately I cannot say if this is a problem with 2.3.1 because my first phone never got the 2.3.1 update and got stuck with 2.3. I have the feeling that 2.3 was much faster and less laggy than 2.3.1. I probably will return the phone again to see if this is a phone problem or if this was introduced with 2.3.1.

I'm from Canada and bought the phone off someone from craigslist
Device: NEXUS S
Carrier: TMOBILE
Country / Language: USA
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): 2.3.4
As of about two weeks now, my Google services connection sync and even Gtalk never stay on consistently. Data icon goes from green to gray, after wakeup. hen when it is green, I only then start to receive me push notifications. I never had this problem before and was very happy with the Nexus S. Now, however, I'm not so sure about that anymore, and it's a consensus out there that there is no solution, and that Google is "looking" into the problem. I don't think it's necessarily a hardware issue as everything was fine out of the box when I first got my phone, so its likely a Google server problem? Though it sounds like the problems are isolated to Nexus devices and myTouch 4G phones.
I would call Samsung to try to get a replacement device, but from what I hear, it doesn't solve the problem either, and Samsung's CS really sucks too.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am going through the same trouble, too. I think its more of Google server related. One thing tthat I am sure is, it started very recently. About 3 weeks ago.

I have the same issue. It started a few weeks back. Got the 2.3.4 ota...same issue. Came from 2.3.2.
It's been happening to me for a while as well. Even back in 2.3.3 when I was on CM7 and OEM. I seriously think it's a problem on Google's side and they really need to address it because it keeps logging me off of Gtalk which is annoying.
Funny thing is. I notice that it happens alot less when I'm using 2g only....
Wonder if there is something to that..

Yeah I stay green if I'm on 3g, so maybe it's a wifi issue. I would've sworn it was a 2.3.4 issue though.
highly doubtful that this is a wifi issue, with the number of people of various threads stating that they dont even use wifi....worse yet it occurs regardless of wifi or 3g/2g
i posted a video on youtube showing the problem

i have the same issue, both of my nexus 1 and tmo G2
So I've been an atrix 2 user for a few months now and its a great phone...Its rooted and I just updated it with the latest ota update and kept the root and all of that good stuff. But one problem that I have been having with my phone for the past month or so is that my phone will heat up like CRAZY! Then restart and then it wont let me use it. The power button doesnt let me turn the phone on...nothing. The only way I can wake my screen is by putting the power chord in and that just lights it up it doesnt let me use the phone. It shows that everything is functioning in the background I still receive messages and my apps update ect. but I cant use me phone. It goes through this cycle for about an hour then completely kills my my battery after it runs its course. I have no idea whats wrong with my phone. Can anyone help or have any suggestions? Anything would be appreciated!
Sounds to me that you need a new phone. Is it through att? You may need to do a warranty exchange.

Yes it is from AT&T I had to do the same thing with my original Atrix, but I traded up for the atrix 2
That doesn't sound good... the OG Atrix had a couple problems with that but I've never experienced it on the A2. You should try for a warranty exchange... look at the noob thread and flash the fxz, apply the OTA update and then take it to AT&T.
Yeah I think thats what I'm going to end up doing...this especially happens when I'm listening to music on my phone it loves to freak out on me. I'm just starting to have my doubts about Motorola because my original Atrix gave me problems and I so desperately hoped that it would be fixed in this version. Is it just bad luck I got 2 phones from motorola that both freak out on me? or is it me?
I'd say bad luck.
I've had 4 A2's and, while none of them were perfect, none of them had overheating problems.

My A2 is my first Motorola. I have an htc and two samsung phones and my A2 is by far more stable than any of my previous phones. I would say you have just gotten two bad phones. Do what you want to but i would stick with Motorola. Just giving my two cents.

Interesting if the problem is the governor...
Also for a free way to change the governor use ROM Toolbox (free) and go to CPU Sliders.

I really appreciate all the feedback from everyone, what I did so far is that I flashed the stock FXZ file back to my phone then updated and seems to be working like a charm buy I still think its too soon to say how its really doing. Instead of second guessing myself I think Im going to get a fresh A2 today hopefully and I won't have any problems like this again! Thanks to all the help from everyone!

I would also take a good a good look at the apps you use, some apps leave themselves running and take some good resources, and can cause your phone to overheat because of this. take a look at the resources in use from settings --> applications, go to the running apps tab, do this when the phone is hot and see what apps are taking a good bit of resources. Just a thought, as I have had this issue before, not on the exact phone I am on now, since I found the offending app and did not reinstall it the last time I got a replacement of this phone.
I wish I could check it when my phone gets hot, but when it gets to that point my phone boots me out. Not letting me touch it at all :/

Apparently the systempanel app (paid version in the market) can identify which apps were running when your phone rebooted, won't tell you whats causing it but may get you close. I dunno how to use th app very well though but I heard good things.

I've started having this problem today as well. Two days ago I noticed a very quick drop in battery level to almost nothing after going below 50%. Same thing yesterday and today. Today was the first day that I noticed the severe overheating.
I'm using the SCv5.1 ROM. I've been using it for about a month without trouble, but any chance that's the cause? I'd love to not need to return the phone to ATT.
The only time I experienced these symptoms was after restoring an AtrixBlaze ROM.
Flashed back to stock w/root, then OTA. Restored a backup of RebelROM. No problems since. Was very concerned for a day that it had some how damaged the phone.
I've been through Iphone, Palm Pre and HTC, this phone beats them all except for WebOS which was the software on the Pre. That was an amazing OS with a lot of potential.

Using Jimbridgman's advice above, I looked at some of my apps. I had been using Green Power Premium (paid) and it just updated a few days ago. I disabled it and have not had an issue since, but I have yet to go through an entire power cycle.
I bought my Atrix 2 in India yesterday. Everything works like charm except the earpiece. The voice I get from the other party is so shrill that I need to keep my phone away from my ear to understand what they are saying . There are 4 settings in all to change the voice quality of the earpiece but it seems they are of no use. On the last setting, I can even hear my own voice from the earpiece. Also, when I tap my phone around the 3.5mm jack area, I hear a sound that makes me feel that something is loose inside. Is it a known issue or a bug or its just me who’s facing this? What’s the way out? Thanks in advance.
wife has a one s and uses endomondo to track her running, never had an issue on the old desire she had and me neither on my sensation. Finding it very flakey on the one s, sometimes it tracks ok, sometimes its all over the place and sometimes it doesn't track.
Tried my tracks too which was the same.
I did tell her the other day to go out front and wait for the GPS lock before pressing start which she did and it tracked ok. Need to try a few times to see if this works,.anyone else seem this kind of issue?

wow you must have been really unlucky with your phone, havent seen this issue anywhere.
GPS performance is different on every phone unfortunately, and somethings manufacturers just dont seem to spend much time on it, but personally I have no issue, so hopefully your next one will have all its issues fixed. If you really want to you could try some of those so called "gps fix" apps on the market, some do actually work

Quick question: Are you using the phone on the carrier you purchased it from? Carriers often change the settings of the phone so that the aGPS requests info from their server instead of open location servers. This is great, but if you're on another network, you're firewalled out from their servers and you'll get a far slower lock.
It's entirely fixable, but you need root.
I'll have a look at the apps. its on orange branded phone on orange.
Cheers

I'm having the same problem with a sim-free handset from Amazon. I use it to track my bike rides with Mapmyride. It will lock on to the GPS signal OK, but will invariably lose its lock at multiple points on the ride. I find I keep stopping to check that the phone is still working. Did a 8 mile ride today and it only tracked 5.5 miles and that's only because I kept checking the phone. Downloaded GPS status from the play store, which doesn't seem to have made any difference. It looks like I'll have to send the phone back. I'm really disappointed, especially considering my old Desire used to work really well for this. Perhaps I'll get a refund from Amazon and soldier on with the old Desire...
We are on phone number four, it takes longer than my sensation yo get a lock but so far had tracked runs and rides ok.
Can live with the calendar agenda widget crashing sense...

My sister phone is being having lots of problems with this phone, dropping calls, low volumes, and this keeps happening with every phone tmo sends her, she is on the third phone that tmo sends her.
So question is. Is it a good idea to root and install a custom rom?.

I know my phone has responded a LOT faster (loading and running apps, doing multiple things at once, longer battery life) with a custom ROM. (I use Android Revolution for TMO).
In general, yes. Rooting will give you a happier phone experience with more control over the hardware so you can better diagnose and fix problems.
The dropping calls thing could be an issue of the radio software the stock phone is using in your area. Different radio software can have dramatic effects in various parts of the country. Of course, you could also just be in a crappy coverage area, and no amount of software updates will fix that.
The low call volume is something that plagues the Sensation. There's nothing wrong with the device your sister has. That's just what it does. Rooting and installing custom ROMs and / or apps designed to boost the volume (Volume+ is one, if I'm not mistaken) can easily fix that problem.
However, rooting could also mak eit tougher to continue getting replacements if something continues to go wrong. It sounds like your sister just isn't happy with the phone. After a few exchanges T Mobile will start to entertain the idea of swapping your phone with a different model. Consider that too, as your sister may just be unhappy with the Sensation.
