Instruction on how to install khal's rom - Milestone XT720 General

Hi I am newbie to installing roms but I was able to install dexter's froyo 1.3 but can somebody help me install khal's rom. Any help is apperciated. Thank you
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App

Installing khal's ROM is the same way you installed Dexter.

Yes but khal's rom does not have nandriod restore or does it
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App

Restore the nandroid using open recovery. Then wipe.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App

So khal's rom does have a nandriod

Kahl's ROM is a nandroid backup. Unzip the download on your PC & copy the folder with boot.img boot.md5 system.img and system.md5 in it to the nandroid/openrecovery folder of your sdcard.

Thanks
Thank you very much. This makes matters much easier. Also how do you apply the update.

Still couldn't install khal's v3 with mui also I have some questions
1.there is already a openrecovery folder in my root directory am I supposed to paste the nandriod there.
2.does it matter if I am trying to update from dexter's 1.3 to khal's v3 with miui directly
3. Last but not least does the nandriod have to be in the subfolder openrecovery of the folder nandriod in the root of sd card
The problem is the rom does not show up in nandriod restore like dexter's did which said stock 2.2v 1.3 or something

sir...you could put your update.zip in /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates folder, by using OpenRecovery, go to apply updates choose your update.zip

Already done that but can't intall khal's v3 with miui optimised

1. the nandroid folder should be in /sdcard.....not in OpenRecovery folder
2. not recommend update from dexter's 1.3 to khal's v3...it could be mess....do from scratch...recommended
3. as my statement above....root of sdcard
if possible read previous/initial page of ROMs provider

When you unzip Kahl's ROM you should have a folder with 4 files in it like...
Code:
/Xtmiuioptimized/
boot.img
boot.md5
system.img
system.md5
You want to copy this folder to your sdcard in the nandroid/openrecovery folder.
Code:
sdcard/
nandroid/
openrecovery/
Xtmiuioptimized/
boot.img
boot.md5
system.img
system.md5
You should see the stock221v13 folder for dexter's ROM there. You can go from Dexter's Rom to Kahl's no problem, just make sure to wipe the dalvik-cache & Wipe data/ Factory Reset (so you'll have to download your apps again or back them up with something like Titanium Backup). Also DO NOT try applying Mioze7Ae's patch to Kahls ROM.

I can't thank you guys enough

I tried another one of khal's rom extracted it into nandriod>openrecovery>miuioptimized
It didn't show up on nandriod restore

Make sure your foder structure is
Code:
sdcard/
nandroid/
openrecovery/
Xtmiuioptimized/
boot.img
boot.md5
system.img
system.md5
& NOT
Code:
sdcard/
nandroid/
openrecovery/
Xtmiuioptimized/
Xtmiuioptimized/
boot.img
boot.md5
system.img
system.md5

K I will see
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App

Tried again but still rom did not show up in nandriod restore

On khal's rom now
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App

I might go ahead and try Khal's without Rev's video tutorial since I've been waiting for that for a while and he has camera troubles now apparently - so I'm not sure I want to wait any longer.
Questions though:
1) Once I have my folder structure setup like it should be, do I select "Install recovery" first or do I skip that step and just go to "recovery boot" first and restore whatever Khal's rom is called to put it on?
2) Currently running Dexter 1.3 with Mioa7ae's V2 Patch. Can I install this over that just fine (the patch)? - Not asking if I can install the patch, asking if I can install over the patch.
Like I'm going to download Khal's first link (the initial rom without the updates), copy all the content of that zip into my sd card under sdcard/nandroid/openrecovery/:
, go into open recovery, select recovery boot, restore whatever Khal's shows up as, wipe/clear dalvik, reboot and hope that works. (and after do the update to latest V3 MIUI)
Is that right or am I getting any steps wrong?
Thanks. Always feel like a noob with flashing...

syrenz,
1) If you have done 'Install Recovery' before this, you should skip. just go 'recovery boot' and restore the nandroid.
2) Its shouldn't any problem do patch over patch...they have 'specific' the patch for it purpose.
3) yes, correct...if possible , don't nandroid from another froyo rom to another froyo rom (i mean ex. from dexter rom to khal rom)..it will be messy...recommend nandroid from stock eclair 2.1

A bunch of things you need to know for galaxies vs aosp
1. I also came from a g1. I loved it.
2. AOSP, Sense, Motoblur.etc excluding Touchwiz(These types run on the basic file format. Install rom from a signed zip, start up using a bootloader spl, you must be familiar with hardspl. A boot.img, this is the kernel, and a zip with /system, and other stuff. Also a recovery.img(Amon Ra). And a modem.img
3. Those phones have a posibility for ADB Remount command and fastboot.
eg adb remount, or fastboot flash recovery.img
4. Touchwiz is Galaxy. They run on 2 bootloader binary files, a zImage as a kernel, and mainly the /system partition called factoryfs.rfs is stockly available on a computer flashable tar file which has the files. The tar files usually with files that include factoryfs.rfs, datafs.rfs, cache.rfs, param.lfs, boot.bin, sbl.bin, zImage and modem.bin.
5. Factoryfs = /system zip datafs = /data partition cache = /cache partition, param includes core files like splash image 1 for the g1, and boot and sbl are bootloader, zImage = boot.img with different coding, modem.bin = modem.img
6. zImage contains the recovery.img partition on GB and the /system partion has recovery in froyo roms.
7. Touchwiz has odd mounts, and flashing alternate recoveries has the potential to make your phone an expensive paper weight.
8. There is a feature kind of like boot loader and spl mode for g1(rainbow screen) called download mode. This is where you connect to the computer to flash the big tar files.
9. The smart devs have created a clockworkmod recovery, which has more functions then amon ra and allows you to flash zip files with sgs4g roms.
10. Boot animation cannot be changed unless you have a kernel supporting them. Instead of bootanimation.zip, they use 2 files called bootsamsung.qmg, and bootsamsungloop.qmg
11. DON"T FLASH ANYTHING NOT MADE FOR THIS PHONE, ESPECIALLY BOOTLOADERS AS THEY MAY MAKE YOUR PHONE UNUSABLE, THE REST USUALLY CAN BE RECOVERED.
so is there a way to backup/restore my galaxy s like i could my G1
1. the galaxy s 4g is not a G1
2. yes, you can back it up by going to "backup and restore" in CWM and then clicking "Backup". this will back everything up.
you can restore by choosing the same option in cwm, but "restore" once in the menu.
if you are on a rom that you want to keep, you can go to advanced restore in the backup/restore menu and restore only your data.
gdofwar has a tutorial out on how to backup/restore the phone. does this help?
when i go into ROM Manager and click "backup current rom" it takes me to the screen in the picture. there are no backup options. incase you cant see the pic. the options are:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data.

It wasn't meant as criticism, Jager just happened to post exactly what I was thinking at the moment I was thinking it as I read through the thread, and it made me laugh. It was like a mini version of Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch.
I sincerely apologize if it came over that way. I am not here to argue with or upset anyone.

Flash, not push. Unless you're rooted, the file system is set to read-only. If you are rooted, download root explorer or any other file system explorer, set to R/W, and push again.
To flash, boot to recovery and select the update.zip option (don't remember exact wording).

big problem need help

So I got a phone with cryogen7 or whatever from my friend. I want to make it completely stock again. I dont have his sd card. so I just have mine from another phone. I downloaded the stock g2x gingerbread file, but when I try to restore it, i get a md5 mismatch or something. I saw a thread on that but I dont know how to write code. just hoping someone could help me out. thank you.
Download it again, also try another browsee

Download the V21E nandroid from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196019
Then use your computer to extract the folder from the zip file you download. Copy that folder to the sdcard on your phone, and place it in the ./clockworkmod/backup directory. Then boot into clockworkmod recovery and select backup/restore > restore and then choose the backup folder you just copied to your sdcard. Make sure to do a full wipe/factory reset from within clockworkmod before you reboot or you might get a bootloop.
If you want stock recovery then use tga gunmanns one click app in the development section to restore stock recovery. Then you'll be 100% unrooted stock again.

Nandroid backups aren't flashable zips. With the files from the thread i linked to, you have to extract the backup folder from the zip before you restore it. But yes, you are correct that spaces in the name of the backup create issues.
Did you figure it out yet?

it freezes on "checking md5 sums"... don't know what to do
Are you using your computer to extract the V21E folder from the zip file? Ive used my phone before to extract it before and gotten the md5 mismatch error, and then used my computer to do it and it worked fine.
are you sure the rom your using is for your phone?

[Q] Installation Aborted g2x :( help please

I have a g2x. My phone is currently on Miui . But I tried switching back to stock rooted froyo. My phone is rooted, and is on Miui. I dislike this rom , and wanted to switch back.
Problem: I wipe data and cache everything .go to install zip, choose the stock froyo zip I found in xda. I click it and it says installation aborted. It's been very very frustrating. Since I leave to Europe in 2 days I can't stand to have Miui for 2 weeks. What can i do. Thanks
Try restoring your backup.
Might be a bad download. Redownload the file and make sure its a full file size 1xx MB rom.

No... Still does not work. The original thread said that it had to be extracted to the SD card but there is nothing in the zip to extract. Getting error when I try.

Not at root. It's somewhere like clockwork mod/backup. Look for the clockwork mod folder in your root directory.

i found the clockworkmod folder but theres nothing else in there should i create my own named backup? i put the update.zip in there and now when im in recovery>backup and restore>restore it says "no files found"
Lol... well first off you should never use ROM manager to do anything except RENAME your backups. Don't use it to flash anything or backup anything.
If you did a proper backup it would be under sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and it won't be a zip file. It'll be a folder of the date and time you backed up, and inside will have about 5 files some ending in .ext3 or .ext4.
Reboot into recovery manually next time, never use ROM manager for our phone.
I'm sure you lost all your stuff from your old ROM... don't know what that update.zip could be. If anything you can try backing up your current ROM the RIGHT way then in recovery, after you back up, just go to flash zip>and flash whatever the update.zip is... maybe it's a ROM? I don't know.

well i guess i lost my CM7 :/ everything on my SD card is gone now guess im sticking with paranoid android 8 thanks for the tip though ill keep that in mind next time. and where does it say flash zip? o.o in CWM?
clicked install zip from sd card and picked update.zip and it said it installed and then when i run it it just goes too the same rom i was on but everythings erased(i cleared everything before flashing it)
If the update.zip were a ROM it'd be about 85 MBs... yeah guess it's all lost :/.
If you have the March V21Y baseband installed, try this:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/lgforum.com/...pdf?1337877028
That's a hyperlink to a pdf from LG which contains a hyperlink to its V21Y Gingerbread update utility which works with Windows 7. I tested it and it works.
1. When you run it, after the update window appears, open Windows Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Delete and locate the program named "Download Window" and right-click on it and click on "Go To Process".
2. Right-click on the "SmartFlashTool.exe" process and click on "Open File Location". That will open the folder "All-in-On" where all of the files for the V21Y Gingerbread update are located.
3. In that folder there's an application named "LGUnitedMobileDriver...". Run that program to install the drivers then, after the drivers are installed, close the "Download Window" which first appeared on your computer's desktop.
4. Run the "SmartFlashTool.exe" program located in the "All-in-On" folder you previously located and opened through using Windows Task Manager.
5. Follow the instructions in the pdf file you accessed when you first started this process ( http://s3.amazonaws.com/lgforum.com/...pdf?1337877028 ).
Good luck.

It will wipe CWM and unroot. I first used Titanium backup, etc. to reinstall my apps but I wasn't using an ICS ROM, I was and still am using Gingerbread with Faux kernel and some tweaks. After you run the update utility, you will have to root your phone, reinstall CWM, reinstall your ICS ROM, reinstall your apps with Titanium backup.
I've attached the pdf file from LG which is referred to in my previous post. The pdf file is what the hyperlink in my previous post is supposed to open in your browser but, if it doesn't, it is attached here. Just follow my instructions in my previous post with those in the pdf file which includes the internet address where the update utility is located.
