Love it! - Thunderbolt General

So I've had the T-bolt for a few hours now, my first HTC phone. I've had a d1, fascinate and dx. I'm blown away by this phone. I came home expecting to root immediately and get to flashing, but I think I'm gonna wait. Unless battery life gets to be an issue then I see no reason currently. Sense had surprised me, years ahead of blur and touchwiz. Only thing I'm kinda missing is swype, but that's an easy fix. No regrets switching from the hacked to hell sf lol. especially since I got it for free.

Welcome to the club!

I switched yesterday too and had swype about five minutes after I got the phone. It was worth switching just to be able to talk and use data at the same time. I'm not sure why all the complaining about battery life either... My phone's been of the charger for about 15 hours and I have 46% left. That's stock.

Just want to make sure we are all on the same page here.

so this wonderful phone we all have is a little... Buggy... I was one of those lucky people who wasn't having any issues with their phones now all of a sudden it gets a little laggy and the screen well shut off and not come back on (sometimes if I hit the power button repeatedly it will come back)... It kinda upsets me because I thought I had a good one... It was running fine after root, and after NVflash... It was after I started different kernels and roms that I had issues... Now I am running rooted stock with no other add ons and I am still having issues...
Question time.
Sounds like I am having the same issues as a lot of other people. True?
Should I get a replacement (sounds like a lot of the replacements are duds too) or just wait to see what the update brings?
I love this phone... I don't need perfect, just stable...

Check my thread here, will give you an idea of how widespread the problems are: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107660
Same exact thing happened to me. One minute it was a perfect little baby, and next thing you know the booger starts acting up.
I was happy in the beginning when it gave me an awesome experience and was wondering why people are complaining about such an awesome device, then it struck me out of nowhere and began rebooting like crazy.
I want to ride this beast to the bitter end... I am hoping that the end is MUCH further down the road... so as far as we know, the "update" will be fixing most o these issues... i guess I am going to hold off on the replacement... seems like those have the same issues too...
And now the battery is heating up like crazy... I don't like this! Why it's this happening?

That happened on my old G2x, the new one doesn't heat up abnormally, but it does have more light leakage that is obviously noticeable. Gonna get another one when they receive the old one.
I have had a few random reboots, but thats about it. I think it was my fault for screwing around with faux's undervolt kernel lol.

Ill leave my WiFi off all day tomorrow, then post a screenshot of my battery statistics (not the ones provided by Android) but more accurate ones from a app called "Battery Monitor" that gives a break down of use and what you had enabled. I don't want you to think I'm a liar or anything. I guess you could call me lucky but I have had nothing but good experiences so far. I haven't had any reboots, no lag, no freezing and great battery life. Probably better battery life than any other Android device Iv'e ever used. I take my phone off the charger at 7AM and don't return it until 9PM. Throughout the day I am making phone calls, sending texts, surfing the web, reading news from 4 different apps and playing some games. I don't know why anyone would lie about there battery life but maybe some people who say they only get 5 hours of battery life are just plain lying? See what I did there?
But does anyone else have a battery that is heating up for no reason? Should I look into a new battery or possibly a new phone?

Nah, the only time my battery heats up is when I am charging the phone and at the same time playing a graphically intensive game. Even then it doesn't heat up to the point of being uncomfortable.

Yeah I see..but I'm not lying. I simply cannot believe that people actually get good battery life because I've had more than one phone and it exhibits the battery characteristics as the last ones. I wish I could experience what some people say, but it simply does not happen unless I'm on wifi. If only the phone didn't eat percents while screen off...

It also depends on how much your 4G signal fluctuates so it depends on your area. If your constantly going from edge to 4G then that is using up more battery than me if I am always getting a good 4G signal. The more work your radio has to do the more battery it will use. The phone is going to eat up percentages when the display is off but if it's eating up "Display" percentage then I would say you have a problem. If your device is in standby most ofthe day then "Cell Standby" will be at the top on the percentage list. It's doing what it's supposed to do. If there was something wrong, then display would be at the top of the list. Next time you take your phone off of the charger, play a game for 20 minutes right away then make a 10 minute phone call. At this point you should see "Display" and "Voice Calls" at the top and "Cell Standby" the bottom. If not then something is wrong. I know there are many people with bad battery's and ones who have had problems with multiple units. I am just not one of them.

I cave"d" (and came around)

I really can't take the quality control issues any more. I think I am going to try and get a Sensation. I really love the phone, I just can't take the battery over heats, and the screen bleed, and the horrible battery life. I know there will be an impending Gingerbread update that will hopefully fix 2/3 main gripes I have with the phone, but it has still left a bad taste in my mouth. I know that HTC never has this bad of a problem with their phones. I think I am going to try and get a replacement for the Sensation through T-Mobile. If I can't I will deal with warranty replacements until I get a good G2x.
Anyone else starting to feel this conclusion?
I am getting a warranty replacement, and that will be the determining factor for my decision.
Good luck!

I am hoping the replacement I get isn't the same thing as the one I have currently.

Tons, but I have had mostly the same apps since I have had the G2, and I am sure they have nothing to do with this.

Same here. That app chewed through the battery like nothing else, even with the LED brightness turned down. Caused all kinds of reboots and whatnot. Deleted it and all issues with my phone disappeared instamagically.
So keep your GF happy, and deal with the reboots... Oooooooor fix your phone, keep it and stop obsessing over text messages... Oooooooor try the new notification app that is in the themes and apps section, keep the phone, make your GF happy and save the world...

I keed I keed. +1 with the notification app, deleting that made my life better. Screen bleed is something I understand too, but that's why I like the notification bar mod sonnysekhon posted in his CM7 themes. Makes the bleed look normal at least until I play a movie or something. Other than that I'm happy. Good luck if you go for the sensation.
Yes but I really depend on it! D: lol. I wish they had an LED notification light on the G2x.
For me its not just screen bleed, its the overheating issue as well, and the poor battery life(yes even with out the app).
Flash faux's 1.2.2 and his 1.9 kernal. It's been rock solid for me. My battery's been off the charger for 10hrs now and its at 57%.

It doesn't matter that you have had your apps since the G2. Apps will act differently from device to device. For instance. I have always had the NFL Mobile app and when I put it on my G2X, it was causing it to overheat and was killing the battery big time. It would drop 10% ever 15 minutes while at idle. The very second I deleted the app, everything went back to normal.

Won't hear any flack from me. I am getting the Sensation as well but I don't know if I am going to give it to my wife or give her the G2X. Either way, which ever one I decide on is hitting the bricks once the Hercules gets here. I already purchased the Sensation and returned it the same day due to over heating, freezing and reboots. Seems like every phone now adays ships with bugs and it's like playing a lottery in order to get a bug free one. Looking over in the Sensation forum isn't to promising considering all of it's own problems.
O well. I'll wait until the Sensation gets released from T-Mobile so I can return it as many times I need to like I did with my G2X. I had to return 3 in order to get a perfect device with absolutely no bugs. I don't settle for bugs on my phone and I wouldn't expect anyone else too.

Apps certainly do have a lot to do with the rebooting issues that some people are having. My phone has only rebooted maybe once and it was because of an app. Removed the app and no more rebooting. Replacing the phone will do nothing if you continue to use it the same way and don't do any actual troubleshooting yourself.

Hercules is only a code name for the phone. But it does have a nice ring to it.

Not sure which LED notification app you're using but the one I'm using hasn't caused me any reboots or battery drain (could just be my device but I'm not sure). It's called LG 2x/Black Notifications, made to be used both for the G2x and O2x

Charge vs. Thunderbolt

Don't know if anyone's interested, but here I go:
Bought a Thunderbolt back in April and have had it replaced 7 or 8 times for various reasons. Each replacement, I've also had intermittent issues sending email from my POP3 account.
I demanded a Rezound, but they only gave me a Charge. Here's the comparison:
Speed: Charge wins EASILY. I expect at least 20 on the charge and hope for at least 10 on the Thunderbolt.
Weight: Charge is MUCH lighter. I like that.
Display: Charge wins easily. AMOLED is fantastic.
Screen: Charge. I love the way the screen feels. Much smoother than the Thunderbolt at times.
EVERYTHING ELSE: Thunderbolt. It's "quicker" overall, more responsive, GPS locks in within seconds (Charge took about 5 minutes), phone pad is more user-friendly and didn't require as much reaching from the thumbs, Thunderbolt NEVER freezes (Charge did), no longer randomly reboots (Charge did), camera sends portrait pics right-side-up (Charge doesn't), and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
I should point out that because of its positives, I really wanted the Charge to work for me. It was a VERY hot chick. But it was not a wise choice. So for functionality, I'm sticking with the Thunderbolt. Just gonna deal with it not sending mail intermittently.

Just put Tweakstock on with the V6 Supercharger and Voodoo Screen Tuning. You won't go back to the TB and its ****ty battery life. Plus, with Imnuts' new PBJ kernel we can finally overclock and undervolt for maximum performance and battery life. Loving this phone again :]
Tweakstock? V6? Voodoo? I assume all of that requires rooting, right? Sorry. I'm too chicken to root.

Rooting is the only way to go for the best possible experience.
I had a Thunderbolt, Revolution, and Charge so I have experienced all of them and will have to give it to the Charge as the best overall.
Thunderbolt was the only Android phone I had fail on me after 3 months of use. It also is considered a dud, with countless complaints from reboots, to radio issues, and so on.
It has a worse GPU/processor
Hardware buttons are TERRIBLE. They are mushy and flush, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but to me it's very annoying every time I use the phone
No hot-swappable SIM/SD
Less battery capacity 1400 vs 1600 and also by far the worst battery life of the three.
Hardware keys>capacitive keys
Thunderbolt does feel better in hand and I like the design.. I also am envious at the development/ROMs the Thunderbolt has, such as MIUI...
the only thing I'm jealous of the Thunderbolt for is the notification LED... I like everything else on the Charge (except the damn data drop which still happens occasionally for me ), and am content with the amount of dev work we have though admittedly little

Yes, if you root and download "FasterFix" your GPS will be much better. Although, it doesn't work for some people so you might need to edit a file in your /system. Either way your GPS will be much better. Rooting is insanely easy, you plug your phone into the computer, run a program, reboot, install a file and bam, you're rooted. Just check out some of the guides in Development. Also, don't feel chicken to root, we have the files needed to completely fix a bricked phone(unless you happen to brick it while messing with Voodoo Lagfix, which with our current ROM/kernel choices is almost impossible, and even then it can be fixed 99% of the time).

Install Imnuts' new PBJ kernel(its posted on Rootz) in CWM, then install Voltage Control and mess with your voltages/CPU clocks to your hearts content, although I warn you, never go over 1.4GHz or you run the risk of frying your CPU since anything over 1.4 heavily overvolts which is a very big no-no.
That's helpful...thanks for the advice. I've never rooted before, but that's quelled some of my concerns. I should mention that I'm getting some INSANE download speeds here in Kansas City...usually north of 23 and up to 49. It's great. I'm having issues with losing data connectivity (altogether) which requires a reboot. Other than that, I think my phone is getting used to me and adjusting accordingly.

I lose 3G data for days and I am on my 3rd phone. The last replacement lasted 2 hours before the data dropped for 10 hours.
It's weird, I think some Charges have data issues possibly due to quality control the either the 3G or 4G basebands or both, whereas other Charges don't have issues.
I can personally attest to having a reliable charge, although I rarely go to a 4G area.
I live in a solid 4G area but still the data droppage on mine is horrendous, problem is that its not reproducible in store because of their signal boosters so no go on a replacement (I don't like dealing with the reps on the phone either, most don't know what they're doing and I don't wanna call 50 times just to get a good one lol)
I'm saving up for a Nexus or I might wait for the next HTC superphone, either way I like my Charge a lot but the data issue on mine is a deal breaker otherwise I'd stick with it till my upgrade

Unfortunately I heard that it's not just a Charge issue, but a Samsung issue. Just from reading online articles it seems that the Nexus has the same issue. At lease it did with 4.0.2. I dunno about 4.0.3.
It is a Sammy issue. A lot of people came from the fascinate to the charge for just that issue.
We had 2 fascinates in the house bought at the same time. Mine dropped once in awhile the other was solid. I got the charge as a replacement and it has been very solid. My wife has a stratosphere and she loses data once in awhile but a quick airplane toggle restores it. It is a weird issue and must be in quality control, though the fascinates issue was resolved with a software patch eventually

[Q] Should I root my phone?

So I posted a thread a while back and after rooting my phone, my SIM card kinda fizzled out and died (I suppose). I was getting problems like No SIM card detected/lack of connection. Perhaps it was just a coincidence and I just had a bad SIM card. I switched my SIM card about 3 weeks ago (unrooting my phone first) and so far everyone has been normal. I'm a little wary of rooting now, but my battery life is kinda being killer and I wanted to get TB. It can last an entire day but it's typically down to like 10% at the end.
Also, the other thing is that I'm just wondering about updates, like whatever happened to 2.3.6? I know they took it out, but if I root my phone, I won't be able to update it anymore right? So I was thinking that I should maybe wait another month and see if the fixed update was gonna come out...but is it even important? (And of course, the lovely ICS which will come out.....never lol)
if you cant handle it, dont do it...i dont get why people ask others to decide for them

The sim card thing had to be a coincidence, i cant see how its related. Rooting may or may not give you better battery life depending on your use. Running a slimmer rom with less bloat will help, and some kernel tweaks also help.
As far as updates, people here always grab them and upload them so you arent missing much honestly. UCLA3 was the latest "update" that got pulled again. IMO it is garbage and i still run 2.3.5 but other people love it and have had 0 problems with it.
Root it imo.

One extra bit of advice though. For battery life try an app called juice defender. There is a free and a paid version. If you're rooted you get extra functionality out of thru paid version. SIM cards can, and do, go bad. Sometimes they will last years or sometimes hardly no time at all. My longest lasting SIM was almost 3 years and 4 phones, and I've had one at work last me maybe 6 weeks.

Not sure what you don't get.
I suggested he root. Then, because he commented on battery life i suggested the app called "juice defender". It controls data connections, wifi, location based wifi enabling/disabling, even cpu speeds if you are rooted. There are a lot of settings available in the paid version but even the free is good running under the default settings. As i said, when i have it running i get double the battery life. I don't run it all the time though because sometimes i just don't have the need for it and control it all manually.
Does that clear it up? Like i said, not sure what you were confused about.

I agree with you on task killers but i challenge you to run juice defender for a week and say you didn't see a difference. Go through the comments on it in the market. You shouldn't knock something you haven't tried just because you've been force fed the idea that they are all bad.

Im with the others, root it!
One extra bit of advice though. For battery life try an app called juice defender. There is a free and a paid version. If you're rooted you get extra functionality out of thru paid version. It more than doubled my battery life. I don't run it all the time but when i need my battery to last i switch it on. Seriously astounding results.

Oh I still am using JD. never considered the paid version though. I figured with TB ultimate's ability to freeze the ware that that would be enough.
To the second post, I'm asking because I just wasn't sure if rooting would cause my SIM card to fizzle (I didn't think it was because of the root, but there could always be a chance...?). And then I didn't want to keep unrooting, grab a new SIM card, root once more, etc. But I'll probably root this weekend what with my last spring break upon me.

I already did try it, and it sucked. I don't buy into hype, I try for myself and analyze results. it sucked down more power than without it. So it went in the trash can with the rest of the junk

Read everything in all of the SkyRocket forums...twice. Then, read it all again. When you are done reading everything for the third time, root your phone. If there is anything you don't understand, use the "search" function. Then read everything a fourth time. After the fourth read (there will be a test) you will need to do several "Google" searches for popular SkyRocket problems. You guessed it, READ EVERYTHING!
After all of this (no cheating) you should be able to select a ROM of your choice and flash away.
Enjoy.

Best ROM for battery???

I'm looking for a ROM that has the best battery?
Not sure if this is where I ask it or not, but maybe I just need a new battery. I'm getting no more than 8 to 10 hours on full charge...
Driving me crazy. My bionic was better. May need bigger battery. I use Wi-Fi most of the time too. I do mostly internet stuff. I don't even watch videos.

Everyone will have a different experience, man. Flash some ROMs and see. I use CleanROM and don't have many apps syncing or running astray. My phone sleeps like a baby.
If you're getting horrible battery life, maybe it's time to look within. Instead of asking for what ROM, you should be looking at whats in your phone. What's syncing? What's pushing? What's running that you haven't used in two weeks?
Crap like that, brotha. Crap like that.

Yup. Its the file qosmgr or whatever. I took that file away and battery life is solved. Very very annoying.

CleanROM
I've been running Eclipse 2.1 for over a week now, and the battery life is very impressive.
I am a simple user, however, and never use GPS and only use Wi-Fi at home. I fell asleep the other night around 70%, woke up about 9 hours later and it was only down to like 62%.
