My GPS stopped doing accurate readings when i flash roms with the ziggy gps fix. the only way that it gets accurate(within 20m) is with wifi on and connected, if its off it says accurate within 3700m. Thats not too accurate if i might say, anyone else having this problem/ found a fix for it?

I've done that, and it knocks my gps off completely. Any clue why its attached to Google location services?

Interesting, I attempted the same thing and I am unable to get a lock when I disable the Google Location Services.
I'm running on Das BAMF 1.3.2 with the kernel update 3a which includes gps fix/enhancement from Ziggy.
I've been testing how quick I get locks when using the Navigation and I am still seeing a considerable amount of time before it finds a GPS signal. I've also used GPS Status from the Market to reset and download GPS data but I haven't really seen a difference.

Used this method and Ziggy's GPS mod and I get a lock within seconds as opposed to 10 minutes. If I turn on Google Services it goes back to a 10 minute lock time so I think it has more to do w/ the Google Services rather than modifying the GPS Config through Root Explorer.
Edit: I will add that initially my phone will say "GPS Location is Currently Unavailable" and 2 seconds later it gets the GPS lock /shrug
Well mine stays searching when the Google location is off, never gets a signal. What is the stock gps server so I can switch it back?

Well I just found that as long as WiFi is toggled on, the gps will lock on no matter if there's a connection or not. Tied into he WiFi somehow?

That is odd that WiFi affects the GPS locking. I'm trying to find anything I can on this. "Searching for GPS..." in Navigation is annoying as heck.
I also had a sneaking suspicion that toggling wifi on and off caused gps lock issues, I was using another rom at the time, but for some reason, all of those problems ceased when I flashed TeslaCoil and completed the gps conf fix.
Not withstanding, gps should lock quickly using only stand alone, and right now, my gps works splendidly

You can grab it here:
Improve GPS lock - credit Ziggy471
It edits the gps.conf so the NTP_SERVER=us.pool.ntp.org
That comes default on the roms I use tho. Still attached to WiFi switch. What's the closest lock you can get with your gps?

i was having GPS issues with the last two bamf kernels. google maps seemed to lock onto my location after a few seconds or a minute, but other apps that tried to use the GPS would never lock on. i noticed when you go into google mapls, the GPS icon/animation appears on the status bar.
the GPS icon would never appear for other apps that tried to use GPS when using the bamf kernels.
with the stock TB kernel, all is well.
Ok, gps is definitely tied in to WiFi. Without WiFi on its 3400m away and with it on is within 20-50m. That only happened with the ziggy fix so maybe if anyone could show me the original settings for the stock gps server file I could change back and forth and test what the problem is.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
So I rewrote the gps.conf back to the original north-america setting and that fixed the problem. Any clue why ziggys rewrite of a word in that setting would mess it up so much? And how is it ppl are supposedly getting improvements with that, like what exactly?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I don't know what the rhyme or reason would be for this gps issue, because it's so random, there is no pattern to this mess:
1. Got the phone, gps worked great.
2. Rooted phone, still worked great.
3. Flashed first rom, Virus to be exact, still worked great.
4. Several days later, with no rhyme or reason, I noticed that Cardio Trainer had not picked up location
5. Factory reset, problem still persisted, could not lock on to any birds, confirmed with gps test app.
6. Flashed CWR of stock rom post root, still not working.
7. Flashed RUU stock from fastboot, working again perfectly.
8. Have flashed 2 non stock roms since, BAMF 1.3.1 and first TeslaCoil (current) and gps still working perfectly
I can't think of what could have possibly caused this, but now that gps has been stable for about one week and I haven't been using wifi, over the weekend I'm going to toggle between wifi and 3g and see if it causes any issues.

I'll be trying the new Das BAMF 1.4 to see how it behaves. Wish me luck!

Joanni, I'm having the exact same issue that you've been having. With Google services on, I get the wide area. If I turn it off, I get nothing. The only way I get a lock is with WiFi on. I'm currently running Virus ROM.
I know enough to be dangerous when it comes to digging into my phone. I generally just follow well polished instructions. How would one go about trying your fix?

Joanni just edited the gps.conf file to read NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
That was the original setting. It has been said that changing the setting to us.pool.ntp.org has fixed peoples GPS locking issues but in my testing I found no benefit either way. What I have found, is that turning WiFi on will enable the GPS to have better accuracy in finding your location (20 meters to 50 meters in my case). This is exactly what the popup says, the first time you launch Google Maps.
If you wanted to check what your gps.conf file has set as the server, you can use Root Explorer and browse to /etc/gps.conf
There is also an app in the Market called FasterFix that will change the server to north-america.pool.ntp.org for you.

It sends AT&T information on signal strength, etc. as well as your GPS location, so they can fine tune connectivity issues in that area. So it does have to do with GPS stuff. I suppose it's possible that it fixes the GPS stuff too, temporarily. Anyone else want to test and verify?
I installed the AT&T app and tried it and it worked! I haven't been able to get a GPS lock inside my house since I bought this thing, but I got one sitting in my office here in about 10 seconds. Launched the AT&T app first, then went to Maps and it popped right up. Until Samsung/AT&T can push a fix, I think this will work as a good work-around. Thanks!
I tried it and at first I thought it worked, but I had wiring on, so it was just using thuat... I turned it off and it returned to being four or more blocks away from where I am with a massive blue circle covering almost my entire town. Sigh.

The app probably set the GPS to 'MS Assited' mode because it needs the raw sat data and caculate your location from the server end, instead of on your phone. That's why it is fast and accurate (as long as you're not moving much). But it won't really cure your GPS problem because you will need your GPS on standalone or MS Based mode for your Nav app.
this is looking like it works, folks..... I have the GPS recommended fix settings from the stickied thread, and I'm getting good results with this! Connects fast and has not lost signal while driving - two very common issues people are having.... I haven't had anything to complain over, especially if you understand that you can't open and close a bunch of apps that use GPS at once while the other is trying to get a lock - for the first time EVER, Seesmic was able to find my location to post a tweet while indoors at home, it sure didn't do that before downloading this app!

That permission request message actually a pretty good indicator that it goes through the same api that every other gps app on the market goes through. (locationProvider methods) I dont see how it could do anything...but hey who knows.
Tried it. Still not accurate. Off by approximately 4-6 blocks. I'm in my house with one/two bar's on 3g.
I've been telling samsung about this for about a week now. They have passed the info to their R&D folks working on the GPS issue.
Doesn't do a thing for me.
I'm pretty sure that the GPS software issues are at a lower level. All the apps that use location based services (Google Maps, Navigate, Yelp, Around Me, etc.) can use the same functions to activate the GPS and obtain a location. It is VERY unlikely that an app will write it's own low-level code to operate the GPS hardware - mostly because it costs more money to develop in that manner. Also, as a developer it's usually better to assume that existing code has been tested and is safe to re-use.
its from att so its not a fix

I changed my gps server to supl.google.com and that with gps test (From the app store) really helps you lock on. If it locks usually pretty quick 20-30 secs its less than 16 feet... Lock first with gps test and then navigation... Locks 80% of the time pretty quickly and you see the triangulation of the satellites. Faster if you are outside obviously.....

Thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately, at this point I think my GPS is completely borked.
I had been using Runkeeper to prime my GPS for a couple days, but that stopped working. Mark the Spot isn't giving me a lock either. I'm outside on a clear day, and it's been trying to lock for about six minutes. Position Test is reporting eight satellites in view, but no dice.
It's great when these workarounds work, but it will be nice if and when Samsung is able to fix this.

Have read similar results in other forums about firing up AT&T Navigator, but not accepting EULA and starting Google Maps? Pretty close, but nowhere near acuracy of any three previous HTC devices I have owned. I also didn't update Google Maps as recommended elsewhere also
Flashed my phone to the JH3 firmware with SRE 1.2.1a and tayutama lag fix ext2. So far ive been getting gps lock in under 5 seconds outside and at the most 15 seconds inside my house or job with 5 meter accuracy. Still a little lag with the gps while using google navigation, but like 200% better then when i first got the phone.
This may be old news for many of you, but I just found this last night so I thought I would share. The flashable update .zip from the linked post worked wonders for my Captivates GPS.
Here is the original post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782242
I flashed the file from clockworkmod recovery and my gps is markedly improved. It's not perfect but it is much better.
Just thought I would share this with those who didnt know about it.
I also attached the file that I used.
Just for references sake so that we are comparing apples to apples, I am using JH7, rooted with unhelpfuls 1.4.1 kernel.
my mistake. i reset the supl to auto config. I also realized that clockwork uses the internal SD as default so i was reinstalling my root update.zip i still had on the internal. I was trying to install without clockwork in the beginning so i just renamed it to update.zip and threw on my external 16gb but it was installing update.zip from my internal. It works great and i have a great lock within 6 seconds when I have never seen a lock on my device. I even rebooted a couple times to get my lock right away.
Thank you again!

Mine stopped working as well as when I first flashed but still works much better.
I used the LbsTestMode hack to change to the supl.google.com settings and it helped it a little more. Like I said in the original post, this isnt perfect, but its still an improvement over stock and it gives me hope that this is correctable via software. I had all but convinced myself that the hardware and/or design was faulty.

I dont remember what i did but the gps is now working again and it works great, even from inside sitting near a window. I know that it is a result from these files posted. I also set all my settings to :
Application Settings
session type: Tracking
Test Mode: S/W Test
Operation Mode: MS Based
Start Mode: Hot start
Gps Plus: On
Dynamic accuracy: on
accuracy : 100
skyhook: on
pc tool: off
SUPL/CP Settings
Server FQDN: auto config
SUPL Secure: On
AGPS Mode: SUPL
I hope these settings can help someone else. I dont know why my gps cut out before but after flashing the OP files and changing settings to these, I can get a lock indoors without WIFI on.
Also i never have wifi on unless I am in the house using youtube or downloading stuff.
Thank you again for the files! I was using my GPS all day with no issues. I owe you big time because my phone never saw a satellite lock before flashing these files.

EDIT

I was having issues again today and changed to supl.google.com with 7276 i believe and it works perfect now and has been all day. I lock within 5 seconds of opening google maps. I now dont care if they ever release a GPS fix because mine is perfect and I wouldnt change it.

This does nothing. It makes it marginally better at best (read: not better at all). If you're really having that much trouble, flash to KB1 and use the PlumbBob GPS fix. Those ACTUALLY do something.
For most your suggestion will give them the most lag and least accurate GPS positioning.
I suggest you in stall Adams GPS fix to your phone, that or use ga_D's. (gadnarf_gpstweak_att)
Both are much better than what Samsung has provided...
There is also plumbBob GPS fix, but when I tried his version 2nd Beta 6, my GPS only saw 2 sats with no locks even with 10+ minutes of waiting... I did not try version 1 of his fix.
As for the GPS settings, use either Standalone or MS Based(some drift with this setting, much less than ms assisted) . Set your support server to google, distance to 80 and good luck...

MS Assisted = uses cell towers only to determine position. Intended to be used for 'dumb phones' that are not GPS equipped or where only 'coarse' location data is required.
MS Based = uses cell towers to provide approximate location for initial fix, then GPS thereafter.
Thing of it is, Samsung's configuration interface for the GPS is so silly that changes in LbsTestMode don't always really affect anything. If you're getting good results after applying this 'fix' it's just coincidental, or perhaps that you'd finally used GPS long enough to get almanac and ephemerides downloaded over the satellite signal and your GPS was able to function unassisted.
What about this has anything to do with development?

I decided to make this a separate post...
My original phone had all sorts of trouble - GPS was the worst. I don't know what my original one was, I do recall I'd applied the OTA update that was supposed to fix the GPS issue - it didn't.
So I got a warranty replacement phone - it worked fine out of the box, but the next day it was doing the same old crap.
This one came with the OTA update pre-installed. It's a "1010 rev. 0.4" if I'm reading the sticker under the battery correctly...
I read countless pages of stuff online, tried various "fixes" that were posted, all with similar results.
One discussion I read was posted by a guy who claimed some GPS expertise, and indicated that the problem was in the driver - to paraphrase from memory it was something like the cache was getting corrupted and the HW/driver wasn't cleaning it up.
He basically said that they needed to write a new driver, but until hen you could use a 3rd-party app to clear the cache and re-download clean data from the satellites.
I found a (FREE!) app called "GPS Status & Toolbox" by author "EclipSim" (Disclosure: I have NO CONNECTION to this guy, just like his app!)
It has 2 menu options:
"Tools -->Manage A-GPS State-->Reset" and
"Tools -->Manage A-GPS State-->Download"
After doing those, it will usually grab a fix within 15 seconds at most. Once it's "timestamp" is updating every second (you'll see, in the app) I can then switch to Google Maps and it too will get a fix before too long.
Another nice thing about the GPS Status app is that it shows you how many satellites you "see" vs how many you're connected to. When it only sees one or 2, or when it sees a bunch but isn't connecting, you can be sure you need to reset/download again...
This thing DOES eat battery - so it's a good idea to be plugged in, or to kill the app once you've got Maps working the way you need it to...
Yes - it's a PITA to have to do all this to get a basic function of this high-dollar phone to frigging work - but it beats having it NOT work...
Hope this helps someone!

Plumbob didnt do much for me. I am pretty well convinced that with the utmost optimization, the crappy hardware in the captivate can operate marginally well at best.
Ryans Plumbob fix does work. Its a much better improvement over stock on defected models. I had a 1009 and it worked great but the tracking and navigation were still buggy unless the phone was placed on the dashboard. (Always had a larger blue circle and would skip at times).
Finally gave up and noticed that the local atnt is a device service center. Went in and got a refurbed 1008 with stock 2.2 and the navigation is excellent. Even sitting in my lap...
I mean you all should still have the 1 year warranty. Just find a service center and exchange your phone. Hell the refurbed one I got was in better cosmic condition then my original.

i know everyone will tell me im wrong but try running the samsung gps restore app once then remove it from your phone. it is free in the market. and i assure you t doesn't revert to stock settings. atleast not in any location that i am aware of. i have checked the jupiter .xml and secgps.conf and lbs test mode before and after running the app and it doesn't revert anything. but it does seem to clear errors that may be caused by messing with settings without haveing a proper jupiter.xml or config file first. for instance on old roms if i chose msbased mode in lbs test mode it would work for 6 minutes and turn off. even after reverting the settings and clearing gps data the gps would turn off after 6 minutes. running gps restore or doing a factory reset were the only two things that would make my gps work again.
also yes google maps and captivates dont agree with each other 100% of the time. it is thought by some that the gps is recieving interference from the cell antenna (that's one theory at least) so the more data you use as you navigate the more issues you might see if that is true. try a gps app that downloads the maps to the phone. it takes up alot of space but if the app agrees with the phone it is worth it. in the past i had trouble with some aftermarket apps as well while others swore the same apps had solved there navigation problems, so try a few and find one that works. navdroyd is great on my phone.
also, though people are raving about plumb bob's fix, i have more blue circles with it. the problem is the msbased mode. it doesn't work on my phone very well. (back to the data/interference theory) i instead use Da_g's fix the control plane version with lbs test mode supl settings set to control plane and i turn off dynamic accuracy. and i use the kc1 modem. there are other modems with good gps but kc1 has the best call quality of them.
Hey all,
I'm using a rooted TB running BAMF 1.3.2, and my GPS location is anywhere from 5 blocks off to like half a mile off, usually. This is the case whether I'm using Google Location Services, Verizon GPS Services, or Standalone GPS.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Try the new radio and latest Rom version. Or use the app gps status to reset your gps.

GPS doesn't work...
Yeah.... so... GPS was working fine the other day. Location would jump around on the weather widget, but would work just fine using Google Maps or Glympse.... Now I get nothing. No satellites, and it's like it's not even looking. GPS Status, GPS Essentials and a couple others, and nothing at all. If i turn off verizon location and google location, all the apps act like i don't have any location service at all...
Still using stock rom, all I did was root, and GPS was working fine until yesterday.
Any ideas?
Edit: noob mistake. Shelled out the 4 bucks for root explorer, modified gps.config (mounted as ro with the free aps), rebooted and works just fine. Also bought the xda app cuz you guys have helped me with my tmo dash, vz touch pro, and vz imagio. Happy flashing everyone!
Hey again,
So, still no luck with the GPS. Upgraded to BAFM 1.6.3. Upgraded radio to 1.13.605.7 (1.16.00.0402w_1 CMDA) -- first one in The Obligatory Thunderbolt Radio Thread.
Still: my position is like 10 blocks off, and if I don't have Google Location Service turned on, it doesn't find my position at all, just as always.
Is there ANY help for my poor GPS?
mine was acting crazy also but with a diff rom. i got the new CDMA and old LTE and that fixed my problem. it would say i was 10miles away from my house or were ever i was
@skeet43169,
Do you have the version numbers for those?
I read a while back that there was something that can help your phone lock on to GPS faster. Recently I have been having issues locking on to GPS without restarting my phone. When I restart it, it picks up GPS right away. But if the phone has been running for a few days it always says "searching for GPS" in Maps. Is there something I can flash to make it lock on quicker? So I dont have to restart my phone when I want to use GPS or Maps/Navigation? It has always done this on whatever ROM I flash.
I don't know if it will help with your situation or not but I use an app called GPS Test. Tons of useful info and such. Also allows updating of agps data. My GPS seems to lock quickly

Good luck

GPS test didnt do anything. I thought there was something that was posted that you could flash that would make it lock on faster? But I cant find it now. I always have to restart my phone to get driving directions in Navigation. But the thread did have to do with a-gps. i just cant find it...

There's a patch for HTC devices that uses an alternate data source for AGPS data. It *might* work on this phone-- I don't know why it wouldn't. Perhaps that's what you read.
Also, the updated Play store fixed an AGPS lock issue with HTC devices. Again, it appears this is only an HTC fix, but it could be what you came across elsewhere and are referencing above.
I haven't used "GPS Test", but there are two different apps named "GPS Status" in the play market. Both allow for AGPS location data to be refreshed, and produced satisfactory results on my HTC Sensation. They appear to be device agnostic, and would be worth a try. I went from a maximum fix of 4-6 satellites on my Sensation up to 12-15 satellites (under ideal circumstances).
Wifi and bluetooth can also cause occasional fix issues-- make sure both are turned off. I get massive GPS lock problems with Wifi turned on-- not so much with bluetooth.
I know this is a old thread but I thought it would be useful if I would share this. It was a fix for the Hercules but since its like our big brother (lol) I think it should work for our here blaze..
