How-to Train your Dragon[Battery]

To help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly:
1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more
2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour
3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, I tested this on my pops evo and my epic...MAJOR DIFFERENCE
After installing a new Kernel it is recommended tat you recalibrate our battery to get the most life out of your battery. I suggest using Phoenix kernel but your a grown man[or woman] choose your kernel

My god. I was highly skeptical of this but I tried a quick version of the instructions.
I did the following:
1. Charge to 100% while phone = ON
2. Once at 100%, unplug charger and turn phone OFF
3. Plug in charger for 5 minutes while phone = OFF
4. Unplug charger and turn phone ON
5. Leave phone ON for 5 minutes
6. Plug in charger for 5 minutes while phone = OFF
and the results... are miraculous. I'm running Phoenix Kernel v.1.43 and stock rom w/ drm removed.

Trick trick trick trickle charge Battery is in fast charge mode when it begins charging from a certain percentage (although slow). When the charge is in the 90's and you unplug and plug it back in it trickle charges to completion. This does indeed work. Works best in my opinion when you do this after you let the battery completely drain, plug in, recovery mode, wipe battery stats and then turn on.
And then do what you stated above.

i also reccomend an external battery charger that u place the battery into. no need for the trick. Ive used this trick before i got the external charger and yes it does work very well!

+1 on the ext charger. I have two batt. If I charge with the phone... one- goes from 100 to 97 withing sec from when I unplug it and two- it doesn't last as long. Using the charge and switching out the batts. Stays at 100 for a while and it will last forever too.

I noticed this as well, so when my indicator LED turns blue and it says 100%, I unplug, then immediately plug back in until blue.. lather rinse repeat.. after about 3 or 4 times it finally stays at 100% when unplugged..
That being said, I'm gonna have to try to find an external charger and another battery...

My local sprint store sells a charger with extra battery for $49.99. Its an external charger that fits in your pocket. With charging cord of course.

tried this, doesnt' seem to work for me. I unplugged, turned phone off, and charged, but phone said fully charged after like 15 minutes, I assume once it says 100% on the green battery that shows up when phone is off that I shouldn't just let it sit there? its not charging at that point anymore is it?
then i unplugged, turned on phone, waited 2 minutes, turned off, charged again, 15 minutes or so it was fully charged again.

This reminds me of the chargobics that some ppl did on their evo to get better battery life....never really helped me.

So what you're suggesting (re: recovery/battery stats) is the following:
1. use the phone until the battery completely dies.
2. plug the phone in
3. boot into recovery (clockwork ?)
4. wipe battery stats
5. turn the phone on
6. do the 'plug me in' dance after it's fully charged
What if the battery is fully charged and you wipe the battery stats ?

idk i think i used to do something similar on my Hero and even back on my (WinMo) Mogul and Touch Pro and never really got much out of it......
However, today I did this and I swear I'm getting great battery life today. Have never gotten past 12 hours and I'm currently sitting at about 40% left at 12 hours. Could be the placebo effect but we'll see..... even played some angry birds today.

Took 11 days to get here, but worth EVERY penny. I never need to worry about to battery life anymore. Hell, now that I charge my batteries using the external charger, I get atleast 8-10 hours with constant use, and my battery doesn't drop from 100 right away. I never get to the 3rd battery by the end of the day and thats with a 18 hour day unplugged. Worth it.

I have noticed some weirdness with the battery. I looked at the juiceplotter graph after the battery had been left charging all night, and it would charge to 100 and then over th course of half an hour drop down to 95% or so and then recharge up to 100 over and over and over again. I have taken it off the charger sometimes and the battery has gone from 100% to 96 % within a couple minutes and other times it stays at 100% for over an hour. It was a matter of luck as to when I pulled my phone off I guess, when it was really at 100% or really at 95-97% or anywhere inbetween.
Gonna try this PITA method of charging. Hope it works, but damn is it inconvenient.

The external battery charger is the way to go. i have also noticed when i rarely charge from the phone that it sometimes wont stay at 100 but for a minute then drop to 97. i get 55 hours to one battery with moderate usage.

This didnt really do anything. Unplugged from my charger at 1:50pm, its been exactly 2 hours and its at 77%. Mostly my phone was in my pocket, and I did very light browsing over 3g (maybe 10 minutes).
I'm on Latest Epic Experience with Mixup Kernel. And I don't have OC widget or Setcpu.

Try running the same setup with phoenix 1.43 kernel. Still super snappy and way better battery then mix up.
I'm also using external charger, 30+hrs with screen on for 6hrs

Is it really that much better? If so, what causes it to be better on battery life? I am getting great battery life using the mixup kernel because I have juicedefender and setcpu working hard to conserve battery life. Would Phoenix make a difference?

Just a FYI, Lithium-Ion batteries don't hold a memory like NiCad batteries did. It is also NOT good to drain them all the way down.

Do I have to wipe anything?

[Q] My new, stock Charge is getting ~6 hour battery life.

I've installed the Yelp, Movies, and Amazon app, nothing else, and I'm losing around 15% an hour with light/normal usage.
I've let the battery run down to 0 and recharged completely, I've turned off gps and wifi, and still get really bad life. I live in the Bay Area and get a solid signal all of the time. There's really no excuse for it.
Please don't tell me to flash to a rom, because that's obviously not fixing the issue. Light browsing and the occasional Google Maps has my phone at <20% by the afternoon.
Battery stats just show android system and screen brightness taking up power. What's the deal?

I also constantly have at least 255 / 328mb in use even with all applications closed.

The mb usage is normal i noticed this on stock because of Verizon apps that run in background. As far as not using the phone and only getting 6 good hours of use. i would take to the store and ask if they could change out the battery. Hope this helps.

And if I forget to power down my phone at night, or put it on a charger it is dead by morning no matter how much of a charge it has before I go to bed.
I have an extended battery starring me in the face and can't use it yet since I couldn't find a door and had to have one shipped from Samsung.
Hopefully the extended battery cures my issues.
(I am running Gummy Charged 2.3.3 Beta, currently waiting for the 2.3.4 release)

I am curious as to what you guys are running. And if you go to bed with your phone on , and its dead by morning I can PROMISE you there is either something going on with your phone, or you are doing something wrong (i.e. you have your phone set to never sleep, your screen is set to maximum brightness, your are leaving your phone in desk cradle mode, etc etc etc.) But it's not the phone. May be a bad battery, but without being at your house and seeing what you are doing, I have no intelligent answer for you.

charge phone to 100%, boot into clockwork recovery and wipe your battery stats, then use the phone until you completely drain your battery until it shuts off. Then charge back up completely. This will calibrate your battery. try running a customer rom such as gummy charged or humble to see if you get bettery battery life... thousands of users have reported great battery life with both

I had same crummy battery life. I followed the calibration instructions and i went from about 5-6 hr batt life to ( right now im at almost 11hrs with 66% battery left on wifi with moderate use). Ill test tomorrow on 4g only and see how it does. I would get like 4-5 hrs before.

I am running the latest humble and my battery drops really fast. If I go into task manager and clear my RAM, I get better battery. I calibrated per the instructions as well about a week ago or so and saw no improvement. Please note that I have not been scientific about it at all.
Stopping Data obv helps a million and clearing RAM seems to help as well.
EDIT: I am recalibrating in case it was not done properly before. Hopefully it will help. I am hopeful!

If you are on humble 1.x then that means your battery stats were way off. Basically your battery still needs 23% more charge before its full... thus better battery life... because you had a miscalibrated battery, your phone is erroneously reporting a full charge... charge it back to 100% then discharge fully then charge all the back up

I'm on Gummy Charge GRE, but I assume the same reason?

I exchanged my battery at verizon. So far it seems better. Ive let it drain and am recharging now. I will also try uninstalling g+ if the new batt hasnt solved the problem. I will post back with an update.

I switched out my battery 2 days ago, and I'm still getting under 6 hours with moderate use.
Has anyone had luck with ROMs drastically improving battery life? I can't imagine it being the phone itself, but I might try exchanging it too.
EDIT: it seems like the new battery charges a bit faster. My old battery would take around a minute for one percentage gain. Can anyone comment on their charge times?

I read a lot of thread about battery calibration so I want to know if someone try this on XT720 and if it's really usefull and not dangerous for the phone.

It is useful and not dangerous at all. Your battery has, if stock that came with phone, a full charge of 4.2v.
So let's say that you have been conservatively using you phone most of the day and are at 70%. You decide to flash the Hellmonger edition or CM6 but you make a nandroid backup first. You flash them and it goes horribly wrong and your phone power dwindles down to 30% and you freakout and charge it back up.
When it is charging, you decide to hold off on flashing for a bit and want to go back to your "home" ROM, whatever that may be. You let your phone charge up to 100% and re-flash your back up. Once it reboots and settles down, you happen to notice that just 5 mins ago you were at 100%, but now after flashing your backup, your battery shows 70%.
30% drop in 5 mins is rediculous. Yes it is, bit it didn't really drop 30% in 5 mins because when you backed up your original ROM, you also backed up your data/system/batterystats.bin that was calibrated to 70%.
If you use Battery Calibrator and charge it up fully, run app, hit it and then unplug, it deletes the data/system/batterystats.bin and in a few seconds (5 ithink) it creates a new one with you proper charge and voltz.
So if you flash a lot, this is good for you. Or you can delete the batterystats.bin manually if you want, but there's an app for that.

So, if I understand, it's not so usefull because after I lose my 30%, if I charge and I have 100% it's really 100% not 70% right ?

I would say that it is always best to start from a clean slate. It deletes that batstat file and starts anew. Can't hurt, but if you are flashing ROMs every 3rd day like most of us, it does come in handy.
For the moral of the stroy, it will not damage your phone. Just a one click app that you can do manually with Root Explorer if you wanted to.

Its recommended that the battery drain fully, and then be recharged without interruption. I guess thats to give android a full scale from full to empty, to help better report battery stats and consumption.
However for me full drain means 10-15%, its hurts the battery to be drained till the phone powers off.

Haha battery calibration definatly helps the battery a lot but u suggest not draining battery fully??

I used to drain it fully till my phone turned off before calibration but I read a very detailed article about how draining the battery completely can hurt it. So I choose to drain it till 5-10% which is good enough

How come sometimes when the battery is full it shows 4200mah like it should but sometimes it shows less like around 4165mah in the battery calibration app? At 4165, I still left it there to charge to see if it would increase or not but it didn't...

I know that the last little bit of charge just trickles in and takes a long time. If mine is at somewhere between 4150 and 4200, i call it good and go from there. If it was showing at say 4095 and 100%, then there might be something wrong with either the data or the battery. If you are sitting at 4165, then it is charged for the most part.
The app and what it does is more for when you are flashing a ROM and have around 60% and then once booted up fully, you charge it up to 100%. Decided you don't like your ROM and go back to your original ROM via backup, it will show 60% instead of the 100 or 90% you had before you went back to back up b/c you backed up the batstat bin when you nandroided your original ROM.
How about this:
ROM: Epicsteelblue 70% (and you made a backup) Then went to CM6, charged and hit calibrate battery at 100%. Used CM6 for a few hours and decided it wasn't your bag. Your batter is at 50%. You flash back to your Epicbluesteel ROM and you know for a fact you had 50% before you flashed back, but now once totally booted, you are showing 70%. This is why you use the battery calibrator after you flash a ROM. Gotta create a new batstat bin for you "fresh" ROM (even though it is a backup).

That happens sometimes to me aswell. The battery calibration app shows the battery full at 4165 or somewhere in that range. What I do with that is bump charge it. So if battery calibration shows 4165, i just calibrate it and turn the phone off while it is connected to the charger. When it turns off the charging screen appears and shows 100%, i leave it there for an hour or two. Then remove and turn the phone on. If you go into the battery information itll show the charge to be 4200 or close to that. Hope that was helpful you can try it next time.
EDIT: The reason I turn the phone off and let is charge is that when it reboots after fully charging to 4200 it can create a fresh battery stats. Remember battery stats are only rebuilt upon boot. If you calibrate your battery and then dont reboot its useless. To test calibrate it, and then use it for awhile and then try to recalibrate it the app will indicate that there are no battery stats avaible to delete. This is because the ROM has not made any new battery stats and will only make them on boot.

Battery Updates
The battery updates every 10%, is there any way to make it update more precisely, like every 5%?

I've never been able to get anything better that 10% battery increments

It is the property of all rechargetable battery, 4.2V can only see at the moment charging progress just finished. when the power management IC pull of charge current, battery's voltage will drop a litte in a very short time, like you said, 4.165V for example. And, because of your charger is connected, battery will not drain, It won't be another charging progress witch you are expecting.

I know I'm digging up an old thread here, so sorry for that. I've recently tried a few other ROMs, but since have come back to CM6.3.7. I always do the battery calibration thing when I flash ROMs and each time I've tried it lately, it gives me odd information in the Battery Usage screen. I charged my phone to 100% yesterday before leaving work and when I got to work today, it showed 70%, which seemed normal, but the Battery Usage screen showed "1h 24m since last unplugged" and I know I hadn't plugged it into the wall or USB for about 12 hours. I did restart once....could that be the reason why the time since last unplugged is incorrect?

I flashed weapon onto my g2x and like it...used it for like 5 days,then I was calibrating my battery by charging it fully, using a battery calibration app to reset the stats when it was at 100%, and I drained the battery to 0%.
I was playing a movie when it hit 0%, it showed t-mobile's goodbye screen, but never shut off. I let it sit there and walked away. 30 minutes later t-mobiles goodbye screen was still on the screen, and I removed the battery...put it back in, plugged in the charger, then couldn't get it to turn on. I let it charge for 3 hours (the plug was surely live, it would charge my evo 3d when I tested the charger), but still can't get the phone to do anything!
I'm guessing something went wrong with the battery, so I ordered a replacement...but I can't understand what or why. What do you guys think? I'm a little worried that it was something more than the battery but I won't know till the battery is here in a few days.

It is possible the Battery is fried. Today's batteries should never be drained to 0. There are charge circuit's inside that can be damaged.

taking the battery out and putting it back in didn't work...but it did finally come on once I removed the sim card.
wierd...oh well, glad its back up and running. I saw someone in a comment somewhere say they couldn't get theres to power back on until they removed the sim card...and it worked for whatever reason.

It has been said by a Google developer for android that battery calibration doesn't do anything for the battery.
Battery stats only tell you what's been running and using battery, not anything about the capacity of your battery.
Not sure but I think your battery is just very dead. I suggest to keep trying to charge, but make sure the phone isn't getting too hot.

And just for future reference the g2x has issues with turning off due to a dead battery. So if it ever dies like that again just pull the battery immediately. Also sometimes it won't even make it to 0%, I've had mine die at as high as 4%.

The phone's charge circuit can't be damaged by a "dead" battery, the charge circuit is self-monitoring and protects itself, the phone and the battery.
The battery can be damaged by its voltage being too low or being charged improperly. A cheap battery with no or fake charge and temperature monitoring can overheat and cause damage to itself and the phone.
Cheap external battery chargers, or those which aren't meant for the type of battery being charged, can/will damage the battery. Overheated batteries can catch fire and/or explode.

So whats the best method for a first-time battery charge?

Do i let the phone shut off from the battery reaching 0%, then charge it to 100% and be on my merry way?

I've read multiple theories, but I think u should take it down out of the box, then shut off and charge to full...I remember ASUS recommending that to a media outlet when the Transformer 300 came out a few weeks ago...so that is what I am going to do when I get mine.

Be careful with how you charge the phone, rather with how low you let it get.
Depending on how technical you want to get about it purposefully letting a battery drop to absolute zero can cause some odd chemical reactions that while not immediately evident can some times shorten battery life.
I would recommend taking it out of the box and using it until it is low but not dead. Maybe 10 or so percent and then either turn it off and charge it or leave it on and charge it just do not pull the plug on the charger until it is at 100%.

Full battery cycles are not good for long term life of Li ion batteries.
Also, its unlikely, but occasionally happens where discharging the battery to shutoff will render the battery unable to take a charge. The safety circuit on the battery is supposed to prevent this, but its not failsafe. I've seen more than a few reports on previous HTC devices where this happened. And since the battery on the One X is not easily replaced, the result can be disastrous.
The battery meters on phones are not very accurate in the best of circumstances. No need to drain to shutoff, 10 or 20% is fine. No value added to draining to shutoff, and the consequences can be very bad.
Drain to 10% or even 20%, charge to full, repeat 2-3 times. This is done just to calibrate the battery meter on the phone. Its a misconception that you can somehow increase battery life by "conditioning" the battery. But modern Li ion batteries do not suffer from memory effects, and conditioning only works for older tech NiCad batteries.

I do the same thing for all of my phones.
1. Activate and mess the heck out of it until it dies completely.
2. Charge it up to 100%
3. Mess the heck out of it again until it dies completely.
4. Charge it up to 100%
5. Mess the heck out of it again until it dies completely.
6. Charge it up to 100%
Then use it normally

Mine came dead! it didnt even turn on. so I'm charging it now

Mine came with 1% battery so I just turned it back off and now I'm charging it up, i think the led will turn green when it's ready

How do you tell if the phone is charged to 100% while off?
While on, my battery percentage doesn't seem to go past 99%. Is that correct or is this last 1% just taking a very long time?
Update: NVM last 1% just took forever. LED does turn green when fully charged.

The LED will turn green once it's 100%.

Don't worry about letting the phone die and charging it up to 100%.
These batteries don't have a "memory" like older phones

Mine came dead too. Charged it to 100% and now been using it and so far have 36% on 3h 9m on battery.
Screen at 84%
Does the battery life get better? Because it seems to be draining rather quick. Even though I have screen brightness less than half.

@Maroon Mushroom, Correct these lithium batteries dont have memory effect, but over discharging them will shorten its life.
I dont want to sound like an expert, but discharging the battery until it dies is not recommended. It will affect battery life/performance.

Ya, we use Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries now which dont have a memory. The older Lithium Polymer (Li-Pol) batteries did have a memory and needed a certain charge method to get the longes life cycle out of it.

Hmm, i hate the idea of letting it die completely. But what i've always done is turned everything on and ran it through a low-powered usb source so it has a charge but the battery is still draining. So even if the battery runs dead it has power via USB plug [make sense?]. Usually having everything on [i do mean everything] and downloading a torrent so the internet is constantly under use. Then again i'm not sure how the One X will work out for this, but thats what i'm planning .

guys its lithium...u cant drain it to 0...even when android shuts down your at around 3.6volts. thats definetly not 0volts. no memory and android wont let you ruin your battery...so charge however whenever.
im qualified in lead acid. ni cad. nimh and lithium batteries. trust me..u cant hurt it unless you short it! !
