Ambience Sensor not working?? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey people,
Is it me or that the ambience sensor in the nexus s is not working properly...
screen brightness is not adjusting properly.

I had an issue once about the screen being stupidly dark.
I turned off the phone, removed the battery, waited a bit, reinserted it and voilá...

try out 'z-device test' on the market to test 'all nexu's sensor'

[Q] LCD back light dims

I have noticed an issue with my third Charge. Watching a movie or you tube and the LCD just dims a little. Really annoying. Anyone else?
Settings, display settings, power saving mode. See if that fixes it.

Yep, did that and mix of auto-brightness and manual brightness settings. Nada.
What ROM and video player are you using?
Are you covering the light sensor with your hand or something

The stock video player has its own brightness setting. Perhaps the other apps are linked to that setting?

No this morning opened twitter put phone down. Then the screen starts getting brighter after it has already been on for a while. Right now it dimmer than it should be. I do no think this is the brightness as it appears and I a new owner of this phone that the back light is not working correctly.
The light sensor isn't instant. I've noticed it getting brighter/dimmer at times but I think that's just it trying to adjust. You tried turning auto-brightness off?
I often am outside I am thinking the light sensor maybe the issue. Thanks.

Smart Cover - do not purchase

A quick word of warning.....
A new app has appeared on the market using the Gnote as a 'cover pic'.
https://market.android.com/details?id=smart.cover&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInNtYXJ0LmNvdmVyIl0
Similar to the 'smart screen off' app that is supposed to work with the proximity sensor to turn off the screen. It claims to work with the Gnote flip cover but I can assure you it doesn't. It has the same problem as the other screen off proximity apps in that it works if you put your finger over the sensor but not with the Gnote flip cover.
Just a 'heads up' for anyone thinking of buying...
Dan
Not only that, any app which wakes your phone using proximity sensor is preventing deep sleep and probably killing the battery all day long

I am using "Power Switch" since my galaxy tab times. It's made by an xda developer. Many options to switch off your note, eg using the proximity sensor or light sensor or aceleration sensor. I am using the proximity sensor mode. No draining my battery . So far so good.

It's work fine with me,just include it in task killer ignore list.
Thanks

Thanks for that. Now I can just put my phone in my holster, or close the case if using one, and it will turn off. No more fiddling for the power (and pressing the volume at the same time) for me!
The Power Switch app works really well at turning the screen off, a lot better than the other ones I've tried

It screen off, but if you look closely it keeps on & off

Well, just my 2 cents. I used the app and for most of time it does not work. But if you see the way it works is if you slowly close the cover then it works. If you close the cover quickly it does not. In any case it is not acceptable. I just checked the app and returned it promptly

For me it works only with fingers, with flip cover it doesn't turn off screen
Can you post all your settings for Power Switch on GNote?
I tested it and everytime it wakes up.
It works with my finger and if i wish over it, it screens off, 1 second later it starts again.
Nothing for me. I just press the Power off button

Razr HD Screen Dimming issue waking from sleep

I've upgraded my HD to 4.1.2 recently and have noticed the last couple of days (at least once a day) that the phone is having a dim screen from waking from sleeping. :crying:
Can anyone confirm this is hardware related or is it a bug? I have disabled smart actions, and not using auto brightness setting.
I have found that if I go into the auto brightness setting and hit the check box, then uncheck the screen comes back to the correct brightness level I had it on.
I just hope its not the phone. It took me 2 phones to get one that had a perfectly aligned chassis.
Seems a cache wipe and reset using the stock recovery has fixed the issue. Not sure why it was doing it?
Nope, it's not your phone. My HD is doing the same thing. I wake up in the morning and my phone is at its lowest brightness setting. I'll see if anything works for me.
Haha it took me two HDs as well to get the perfect one. The first one I got was a lemon.

Interesting. Mine has not done it since the wipe and reset.
I thought another issue might have been the light sensor and it being sensitive to dirt and smudges so I always keep the sensor glass clean. When it happened last time (has only done it twice) the sensor glass was very dirty.
I'll try the wipe and see how that goes... Thanks for the help.

Screen digitizer weirdness

So every once in awhile my phone will start scrolling in-app. At first I thought maybe it was just oils on the skin, like some hp laptop touchpads, but after a while I disproved this. Now the real weird thing is that if I shut the screen off the come back to the app it stops. I'm thinking maybe something to do with sudden changes in ambient temps. Any thoughts?

I have the same issue, was really bad this weekend when it was near 0 and I was outside. same thing where I shut screen off and back on and then it seems OK.
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
Same here has done it since day one not very often but out of the blue screen acts up. I have watched it move icons on homescreens around before. But turning screen off then on stops it
Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2
Sometimes happens on mine, but only when using a high amperage charger or there are water drops on the screen (from rain).
Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2
Add me to the list. Mine has done it a handfull of times but turning the screen off then right back on has always corrected it.
Very odd.

Happens to me a lot when it's freezing outside. On/Off cycle fixes it
So my question now being, if we can assume its temp related, could this be solved by a patch to adjust based on ambient temps, or is that in the proprietary driver for the touch panel?

I notice it happens to me if I get the screen wet at all.
As stated, turning the screen off/on fixes it.

Notification Led diode

Hi guys!
Iam having a problem with notification led diode. It doesnt work. I havent seen the light yet.
I just tried Light Flow app but it also wasnt able to light the led up.
So i assume that my phone is broken in that part and the diode just doesnt work on my Nexus 5.
Does anyone have some the same problem?

Yep its turned on.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Figured it would be but had to ask. Factory reset as a last resort maybe?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 4
I installed Light Flow. Took a few minutes before I got any lights.
There's a test mode in light flow. Might be worth trying that too.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk 4
Test mode in LF didn't work for me. I was going to uninstall but then I noticed the battery charging light came on. Now all of the programmed lights in LF work for me. I have not retried the test light feature.
light flow might have just glitched up the led for a bit. If it stops working again, try clearing app data, or reinstall, or uninstall light flow altogether. It has been known to have some issues.
In light flow you have to turn off the screen after turning on test mode, if you haven't tried that already.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Yes, the screen MUST be off for the notification light to illuminate. In addition, at least for Light Flow, it can take several seconds for the notifications to light up, even when performing a test.
Same problem here and it's going to back for a refund. It was actually a replacement unit for the first one which had speaker issues.
I tried everything and never saw the light come on once while the first unit worked fine with the same settings.
try this
Hey guys I was having this same problem but I downloaded this app called notification light widget by Motorola and added it to my home screen activated it and my notification light has been working since just tuck the widget away on a side screen . its a good fix for now
