I'm looking to get a Android tablet and my only choices really are the Xoom or the as yet unreleased Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v. I was wondering what was the general consensus, is it better to wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1v or get a Xoom now. Obviously the choice is personal etc. however if I got the Tab it would be the UK version not the new updated version and the reason why this bothers me is I like to root and mess about etc. Which is why I'm asking here, I have a Nexus S and so I am drawn to the Xoom because its another 'flagship' device for android and as with the Nexus S I imagine there is a lot of developers behind it - this is a major plus for me between the Tab 10.1v and Xoom. Which is why if there are different versions of the Tab this would slow/hamper development plus as its not the flagship device future software updates don't seem as certain as they do for the Xoom. I know the general specs - the Xoom being slightly heavier and thicker buts its mainly the software and development which concerns me. I know this sounds vague but to me it seems that the Xoom is the logical choice development wise but every time I look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1v and read about a small niggle with the Xoom, such as the lock button, it makes me wonder and hesitate.
Secondly, I'm currently travelling through Malaysia, Singapore and then onto Oz and Nz. I was thinking of getting the WiFi only Xoom in Kuala Lumpur as the prices I have seen are cheaper than in the UK, I was just wondering this wouldn't be a problem - as in its not a different version as compared to a UK WiFi only Xoom. (Also if anyone knows KL well, where is the easiest Courts store to get to from a tourists point of view to get a Xoom?)
Thank you in advance!
P.S. how do you say Xoom? Is it like xhume or just zoom?
A shameless bump, one of the 40 odd views must own the Xoom and/or have an opinion.
Thank you!
The trouble is that few people have experience at this point with multiple Honeycomb tablets.
If you are basing your decision solely on the issue that the Xoom is a "flagship" product remember that Google is fickle, and have already stated that the Honeycomb tablet variant of Android is basically a deadend. If they are serious about Ice Cream Sandwich being one version for all devices, there may not be a second wave of Honeycomb tablets and certainly not a third. As far as official Honeycomb versions, 3.1 may well be the last. In that case, there will be a new flagship tablet by the end of the year, one designed around Ice Cream Sandwich.
However, its current flagship status likely means that the Xoom DOES have a better chance for an official ICS upgrade then some other tablets being released now.
I completely agree with you that the real rival to the Xoom on the Honeycomb field is the Samsung Tab 10.1. Both the Asus Transformer and Acer Aconia fell behind in my opinion on build quality and physical quirks (which is consistent with my experiences with both Asus and Acer...too many corners cut and compromises made). The Transformer does have a price edge, but I got the impression that, like me, you are not looking for the budget model, but the best model. Both the Xoom and the Tab series also have active modding communities, which don;t really exist (at least not yet) for the Transformer and the Aconia.
So how do the front runners measure up? Well, the Samsung Tab 10.1 appears from the specs and reports to have a slightly better screen than the Xoom, and this makes sense as my Galaxy S i9000's AMOLED is the best screen I have ever had on a mobile device, bar none. Since Samsung's bread and butter products are screens and NAND, this makes sense.
However, Motorola has always succeeded (or failed) mainly on overall design, and this is where I feel the Xoom shines over the Samsung Tab (I have worked with a Tab 7 inch and the form factor of the 10.1 seems to be identical, just bigger). The Tab felt wrong in my hands, somehow awkward and angular. The Xoom, on the other had, has a very substantial yet organic feeling to it. I enjoy holding it and carrying it. The design and the attention to detail of the Xoom simply works for me. For example, the fact that the power button is on the back and slightly recessed, which some users hate, is a case in point. It feels natural that it is there to me, and I really like the fact that it is out of the way. The build quality overall is truly excellent, it feels like a luxury device where the Tab felt to me far more functional.
I am sure they are both excellent devices, and I may pick up one of the Tab 10.1 devices to tinker with the hardware and out of some newfound loyalty to Samsung...however for now the Xoom is my mobile office of choice. If you were able to handle both, side by side for a little while, I have a feeling you would agree.
And as far as I know, it is pronounced Zoom...at least that is how I say it. As the word looks more like Klingon than English, I could of course be wrong.
Thank you for the very helpful reply! Yes another worry is Ice Cream Sandwich, for my Nexus S its not a worry as I know it will be supported and updated so on that front its all good but yes when ICS comes out they could quite well release a new tablet - which is the main problem in the tech industry as soon as you buy a new better model comes out and it seems even more apparent with android!
Part of me thinks get a Xoom will be fine with updates etc and then everytime I look at the tab 10.1 or read about ICS I hesitate. Rather frustrating!
Part of me thinks just jump in! And if I come across a Xoom whilst in Kuala Lumpur I will probably buy it.
Thanks for the advice!

Hey man...
I recently bought the xoom (zoom) this saturday 6/4/11 and I was racking my brains on which to buy...same as you...and I went for the xoom for these few reasons...
Motorola made a great Android phone (Droid) and the build of it was really solid and sturdy. I tried to intentionally scratch the screen with a tack, keys, nail, sharp things and it simply would not scratch. +1 for that...The build quality of the D1 was great...really really sturdy. I was looking at an upgrade for my cellphone back in Dec and almost went with Samsung...but the build quality was a bit plasticy...so I waited..got the Tbolt...these few things about the D1 sold me on the xoom...but not fully.
When comparing the two devices I saw some pros that the xoom had, I felt took the cake. Expansion SD Card slot...Vanilla honeycomb...and different outputs i.e hdmi ect...I had to go with the one that was more bang for my buck so to speak.
After using it for almost 2 days now...I love the weight of the xoom...Its very very very solid, just like my D1. I love the screen, I love the usefulness of the device and I love everything about it!
It looks great, feels great, and operates fantastic. I should say that I got the wifi version and really love the thing man...if I were you...go XOOM!
Some things not mentioned
a) Have to hack to get the sd card working
b) The Samsung 10.1 does not have an AMOLED screen. Therefore cannot be listed as an advantage.
Although some have claimed that the tab does have a better screen. Not sure. But I have heard that the tab has bleed through light on the sides. Again not sure.
I think of all the tablets available today, the HP Touchpad is the one I would choose. I got to play with a few tablets recently. Among them were the iPad, Moto Xoom, HTC Flyer, Blackberry Playbook, Huawei Ideos and the HP Touchpad. The newest Sammys weren't available. Nor were the Acers.
First off, the BB Playbook was the absolute worst of them all. It took 3 people to accidentally figure out how to delete a picture. Whilst messing with it trying to navigate around the UI, I snapped a picture of myself and wanted it off the system. I looked and looked and looked and finally called one of the store associates to assist. After he played with it for a long time, he called another store associate. The second associate played with it for a very long time also and then accidentally figured it out. We all went through every menu we could find and the answer was a simple downward swipe from the top of the LCD frame.
This brought back memories of my experience with a BB phone. No friggin way would I buy a damn BB tablet.
The rest of the tablets were sweet. The HTC Flyer was super smooth and gorgeous. The Xoom is old news. And the iPad is tired. I was really surprised by the Huawei tablet. It's so inexpensive, yet it works really well. Nevertheless, I love WebOS and my play time with the HP tablets was great. It worked flawlessly and smoothly and has that excellent multitask system. Plus I love the style, size and shape.
When the Sammys come out, I'll give them a try also and see it they can best the HP.
I'm liking the xoom. A keyboard and a mouse and I can ditch the MacBook.
Following the rules
im not and idiot or a noob, im tyring to post legitimate feedback on an android rom i am currently using but i need 10 posts so here is one more, thanks for this stupid rule! 8
I have been using Droid ROMS, MODS and kernels since the G1.
OG Galaxy Tab
I have the OG Galaxy tab and it rocks honeycomb pretty well. By 2 year old loves netflix so I'm happy.
Oops
OG Galaxy as in the 7 inch version. Honeycomb is on thru a custom ROM.
When I was in the market for a tablet I took a look at the xoom, playbook, iconia, and the transformer. The xoom was off the list because it was out of my price range. The playbook, I could not find the back button do that was it. It came down to the iconia and transformer, and I chose the iconia because of the full sized usb port and flash on the back.

also that in order to get e-mail on the thing you need to be linked up via bluetooth with another phone.
i went to check one out, was in a game when i did, looking all over for the exit button, took me and another employee 20 minutes just to figure it out, swipe up....yeah, lets not put softkeys on it like we do with our phone, nah, no menu, a FRIGGAN SWIPE MOTION!, i can't blame them for trying to be inovative, but the "physical buttons" for the playbook are so small that someone would need a stylus just to press the friggin' buttons.
it has flash, and 1080p playback....yet the camera on it sucks.
RIM, try harder next time.
I don't have a tablet. But I would like one!

The store I was at had a couple Playbooks on display at different areas of the store and the first one I came to had a non-functional small round button on the top...the button about the size of a bb pellet. I didn't know it didn't function; that it was damaged, and figured it was some sort of LED indicator. On the second Paybook, which was fully functional, if I hadn't pressed that little round button by accident to turn on the device, I never would have figured out how to power it on because I attributed that round button as an indicator or something of that nature. I wouldn't have intentionally pressed it.
The Playbook is typical BB B.S. I had the same experience with my BB phone. I spent 90% of my time trying to find stuff on it than I did just using it. No wonder BB is in the crapper these days.
I went with a Transformer. I did some research too. I will say this that playing with a unit in the store and taking it home and using it for a week or two is a huge difference. I am sure you can make some basic decisions based on your likes and dislikes, To heavy dont like how it feels in your hand etc, but nothing takes the place of good ole fashioned "Use it". I wrote a pretty long article regarding my purchase and my decisions tree in the transformer forums, as there are a lot of "Can the Asus Transformer replace my netbook/laptop" threads on a lot of different forums and i wanted to put my thoughts out there as well. I will find the link and link it. But in short the basic answer is it depends. I know not the best answer and not the one you were looking for but its the truth.
Here is my post its long but might be worth a read if you are trying to decide

I am very happy with the transformer and in my post i give the reasons i chose it.
The Rahl
we have the xoom here. not sure how we like it yet. can't get it to root. or rather can't find a walkthrough that doesn't assume you already have certain things installed on your computer. not their fault. it's the xooms for me needing to root to actually use all it's features.
i have the galaxy 10.1 its so dirty i love it. slim, light, and fast
Apple suxxx but by the way, I prefer the iPad 2 !
I prefer the 7 inch tablet, but there aren't any good ones. The best 10 inch is the sammy sung tab 10.1.
It down right makes all the other tabs look like s**t. Samsung did a GREAT job on the screen. I like the feel of the thrive but it's screen sucks. The ipad seemed heavy but I do like its keyboard. The touchpad and playbook are the worst. the iconia is pretty ugly. The xoom feels nice but has a bad screen in my opinion. Tab 10.1 is best then xoom or ipad.

I am using Apple i pad. Its features processing speed durability awesome.
Some tablets are truly great in the niche such as Xoom, Transformer and Ironia, but seems that it's still no one is good enough to beat the iPad. At least for me, I have to admit the using experience is really fantastic on iPad.

Yeah, I agree. The iPad is a powerful and well engineered tablet. But it lacks the high res display I desire and this makes it tired for me. I'm spoiled by the Retina display of my iPhone 4. There just isn't a display as good as the Retina display. If Apple puts an equivalent display in the next iPad, that would solve the tired problem.
i am waiting samsung tab 10.1 or sony
I have the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and it rocks, so fast and easy to use.
I bought my 8 yr. old daughter a Velocity Micro Cruz. I sent that same POS back 2 weeks later. She is only 8 so I'm not looking to spend mega bucks and I don't buy anything made by Apple. I am thinking of getting her the Gen 9 Archos 8in tablet when it arrives in a few months. The Cruz isn't a bad tablet for the price point but it simply has too little internal memory. It constantly froze on us. It is great looking hardware, nice looking screen and a little heavy. Also, not having the genuine Android Market or XDA-Dev support was a killer. I came to realize I have no love for Android in it's current state (2.3 and below as I haven't used or seen a Honeycomb tablet yet). As a long time Windows Mobile user Android still reminds me of an incomplete and immature version of Windows Mobile that is more popular but not more effective. I am disappointed in this realization, especially when 90% of the tablets out there worth their salt, hardware wise, are Android based.
To be fair, I actually played with my friend's IPad II also. When I say played with, I mean sat there and used it for 2-3 hours to see if it could impress me. The answer is no. It's a $600 POS. What's scary is the Velocity Mirco Cruz was $179 total and the $400 or so price difference really doesn't show when it comes to using the damn things. The Ipad was lighter, faster and didn't freeze (because it has enough damn internal memory), but like every other damn Apple product it is limited and constricted. I swear if the Cruz had more internal memory it would have been 200x more effective than that Apple pos. Transferring information was easier. Using it as a part of my current environment was easier (HD2, Windows 7 laptop, Windows Vista PC). When I used the Dolphin browser it worked excellent (as did Safari). Basically the only satisfying experience I had on the Ipad was the Youtube application and the only thing that made it better than what I get on my HD2 is the screen size. Beyond that it has nothing on my 2 year old phone. Apple smapple.
I don't expect the HP or BB tablets to last very long in this market so I'm hoping Microsoft comes out with a viable tablet OS (which is rumored) and it doesn't actually disappoint me the way everything else has. Knowing I won't be able to replace the Cruz for under $200 I upped the ante to $300 and it looks like Archos is going to slide in with the gen 9's. Hopefully I won't remain disappointed.
The only area I see Android tablets selling is the mid range ($150-$300) where most of the devices are heavily subsidized by the oem - tablets like Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, Nook Color etc. And Apple will soon enter this segment too.
On the high end, Apple has massive economies of scale. There is simply no way for other oem's to get the same part pricing and compete with a $499 iPad Retina or $399 iPad 2. All the Xooms, Galaxy Tab's and Transformer's have terrible sales. There will soon be a new competitor in Surface.
On the low end, there are a number of cheap Chinese tablets in the ~$100 price range which aren't really competitive.
It doesn't help that Google totally ignores tablets. The Play Store has no section for tablets, its hard to find apps, and developers have completely ignored Android tablets as well (due to low sales). Every day the situation is getting worse.
I just googled this question
Seems like there is never going to be a large market for a mobile OS tablet.
We have the Nexus tablet coming soon that will address the issue of Google not doing much for tablets. The Kindle Fire has done well even though its heavily skinned. The iPad like other Apple products are sold at a higher price/margin since people believe that paying more for a popular brand means a better experience. Android tablets will have a hard time competing if they are sold at the same price as the iPad.
If Apple made a 7" tablet they would be going against Steve Jobs, the guy who helped bring that company back from near bankruptcy in the late 90s. Apple would have a hard time making a 7" tablet for $199 if they wanted to keep their high profit margins of around 50% on the iPad. Amazon sells the Kindle Fire right near cost as a media consumption device.
Yes.
I would say yes. ICS was created for a more diverse line of products and I think consumers will react well to a well priced ICS tablet.
I've played around with my brothers Ipad a lot and after buying my transformer prime, I can't really imagine going back to an ipad if given the choice.
I think they will be successful but not until the shine wears off on the ipad.
I doubt that.. iPad is still you're best bet for everything you need for a good, all around tablet.. and the majority of people would choose the iPad instead..
The only way android tablet could succeed is on cheap alternatives.. the next Google tablet looks promising.. sure it won't make any profit for Google but at least they could gain market share..
Swyped from my GT-i9100
non standard is the issue for android tablet
samsung have proprietary ports for charging etc. Once they come up with a micro usb charger port Note tablet, definitely it will boost market.
iPad you cant copy from a camera or SD card, android you can do that .. companies are not exploiting these areas. They have to go in a similar standard phone like in mobiles. atleast 1080p etc.
I guess it all really depends on the end consumer.
I've seen a lot of people using tablets.
I'd personally only use one for taking notes in lectures though at school.
They seem fun
There is a section on the Market for tablets...
-----------------
- Swift -, formerly known as IrishStuff09
Lots of market segments to consider, and I know I don't represent the mass market. With that in mind - I've been on the fence about getting a tablet for the past several months, and I'm finally seeing more and more instances where it would make sense for me. I've spent time with a few Android tablets and with iPads. First impressions - iPad displays are gorgeous and the UI is incredibly smooth and lag free. I tried a few Android tablets that had nice displays - just not quite as dramatically clean and crisp as the new iPad, and I also noticed some very minor stutter and hesitation as I swiped my way around the UI. Very subtle differences - but the iPads just generally felt a bit more polished.
I also found the iPad UI annoying after having been using ICS with Apex launcher on my Galaxy Nexus for 7 months. I love the flexibility of Android. If somebody gave me an iPad, I wouldn't throw it away...but I'd strongly consider selling it to get a high end Android tablet instead. Similarly -- maybe even more strongly -- I've looked at and tried numerous iPhones, but went happily with a Galaxy Nexus instead the week they became available on VzW. I'd make the same decision today. All the more reason for an Android tablet - same UI, same ecosystem, same apps, great synergy. But again - I probably represents a narrow segment of the market.
If we can really see $200 Android tablets that are smooth and well presented, I think they can definitely make a dent in the iPad market. The difference in price could be enough to sway a good chunk of the market.
I have big hopes for the nexus tablet. I don't know if the specs published on the web are true, but for that price the tablet is a gift lol. I'm really thinking in buying a tablet and the nexus 7 may be my choice. And if the price is good I'm sure it will cut a big slice from ipad's market share.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I have a gtab 2 7" and it is successful for me in that it does everything I want and it was cheap. Most people that have tired it out really like the smaller size and like it, but it's not an iPad so they would never consider purchasing one. It is just the way it is for right now.
I'm not sure what it would take for an Android tab to be as successful as the iPad but I honestly don't think it will ever happen, at least in the mainstream.
ipads are cheaper than most Gtabs. For example, the new iPad costs a bit more than galaxy tab 7.7.
As a Flyer owner, my only gripe is that the amount of apps available for Android tablets pale in comparison to Apple. There never seemed to be a lot available for Honeycomb. Whether that changes under the ICS tablets is yet to be seen.

A lot of that has to do with the proportion of market share. Most Android devices are phones so most developers still only develop for phones. As apps are redesigned for ICS they play better with tablets I've noticed.
If 7" 16GB is $199 and 32GB $249 then in near future, 10" 16GB b/w $299 - $349 would be a terrific price :good:
I've been watching the Android scene for a while now and have not bought a phone yet because the hardware hasn't met my needs. So I'm coming back to where I started tinkering with WM5 and 6.5 phones on this forum.
Can anyone recommend an Android phone that isn't the size of a brick, fits snugly in my hand.
Has
NFC
dual/quad core
Micro Sd slot
1080p video recording @ 30 fps
HDMI out
Accepts Keyboard and Mouse input either through BT or USB
Wifi N
And will run on UK 4G.
Can be or has been rooted
Does such a phone exist yet?
I'm not intrested in big screens as it makes the phone almost as big as a tablet and from a portability aspect this is not good.

I'm sorry, but you want an iPhone...for siri?? The lame voice assistant that answers questions at about a 60% accuracy rate? The one that makes you look like a douchebag that's too cool to talk to actual people, so instead you talk to your phone as if it were a person? The one that most users see on TV and go "AWWW COOL" but then they play with it for 5 minutes then get bored?
Not to mention the phone itself matches less than half the criteria you specified.
Just buy a damn iPhone and leave this forum to the adults. There are Android phones out there like the Xperia NXT line that better match what you said you wanted, but I can already tell that you'll ***** about one or two of your criteria not being there, totally ignoring that the alternative phone you're looking at matches even less..but has a gimicky voice assistant which somehow makes it all ok.
Helpful please

*sigh* Wow a one liner that I could expect from nothing more than a child.
I didn't say I was going to get an I phone I like the idea of a hands free digital assistant. I suppose you could argue that the amount of money you spend on an Iphone/contract would be best put towards a real PA But I'm not going to do that.
I can develop android apps so it would make sense to get an Android phone. But I don't just want a run of the mill phone wifi and gps handset with a terrible camera. There are very few Phones on the market at the moment that fit my hardware needs. I'm fussy because I buy a contract and am then stuck with the hardware for the duration. I could stick with my N8 as it's done me proud, I don't need another phone but if I do upgrade then I want the phone to fit my needs not something that I'm going to be disapointed with just because someone said "Oh get it, it's got this cool feature" ;and only to find that cool feature is not on my want list for a replacement phone.
I should thank you for the other info I'll look into that handset.
If there are any other Android Handsets anyone could think of that are pretty stacked then I'll take a look. Shame Nokia didn't go with Android as they would have killed the competition.
Eva!
Ok so android has got Eva. That's good. Right so Pa sorted. Just need to find thr right hardware device.
Looks to me like you want a Galaxy S3. It meets most, if not all of your wants in a phone. The only one I'm not sure about is the 1080p video recording.
Nope
S3 is way too big and flimsy, failed drop tests. It wouldn't last 2 minutes in my back pocket. At the moment I've got my eye on the HTC One X range although I have been looking at concept phones too which look very sexy and although aren't real, they could be next year or the end of this year. Might have to wait a bit longer for android hardware to meet my needs.
It's a shame that no one want's to start porting an Android build to Nokia Symbian hardware. I know it's an epic task but the bootloader is available so It's not impossible.
Nokia got bailed out by Microsoft and part of the deal obviously was going to be that Nokia use Windows as it's OS. Android dev license is still cheaper than MS.
Still looking
Went to a few phone shops to try out some of the devices. A lot of phones are getting too big to hold. If I want a tablet I'll buy a tablet I don't want a bigger screen.
The Experia P is the size of handset I'm looking for and the build quality looks ok.
I see sony are releasing the Xperia GX soon so will see if this meets the Camera/Audio expectations. At the moment Audio quality in videos are what I'm looking at. The quality of audio in Nokias N8 is still trumping Android phones. If you are being recorded instead of the one doing the recording then the mic quality isn't so good on android unless you are on top of the phone. If anyone can beg to differ then I'm open to suggestions and What's the point of a 1080p recording device without the ability to store over 16GB of video?
Still looking...
OK Found the phone.
Just one problem I doubt it's going to make it to the UK

go for galaxy s3
Android doesn't really have any good voice assistant yet, i've tried all of them and they are terrible at even the simplest of commands. But, Google has said they are working on one to compete with Siri. That being said, i would go with Google's own Galaxy Nexus ($350) as they will get all the Android updates first (since its Google's phone) And the Nexus is one of the few that can actually use Google Wallet (NFC) The screen isn't too big, its comfortable in your hand, the battery life is good, and you should have no problem finding a keyboard dock for this phone. In my opinion, the best bang for your buck would be the Galaxy Nexus, and you can buy it from the Google Play Store. Best of luck!
Google has released google now which is way better than siri! And it's true that google wants to release something better that will compete beat siri

Early June I bought my TF300T thinking it was pretty much the best android tablet (in my price range, at that moment) on the market.
I loved it to death for about a week.
Now I barely look at it. It's just so boring. I can't seem to find more than 3 apps that really interest me and it's too big to use as an ereader.
It doesn't seem worth the trouble to root it (I've rooted plenty of android devices before btw).
It's to the point I've put it in a drawer and only take it out when I feel like playing droidwords and honestly I've been pondering buying an iPad 3 since I know ios like the back of my hand due to working with so many apple items and their software, and I really want to see just what I can do with the UI of the iPad (graphics wise) as I've pretty much redesigned my iPhone. Plus I feel like atm the apple appstore is burying the google play market in terms of general app quality (especially when it comes to games and productivity apps). I mean there are just so many apps I love on my iPhone that I would adore having on an iPad and the Transformer just isn't holding up to that.
Are there any ways I can really spice up my Transformer? I feel bad buying a brand new tablet and then wanting to replace it so quickly (especially since I bought it with money from graduation from my dear old mom as her "gift" to me).
What are some apps you would suggest?
