You need to root your phone then flash a ROM with 3rd party apps enabled to install an app that is outside the android market.

Search 4shared.com and type applanet.apk or you could go to applanet.net

You can install an applanet apk via the sideload wonder machine but you won't be able to install the apps though it anyways.. ATT just won't let it happen.

yup basically, even after sideloading applanet, you'll still need to install apps via sideloading if you don't root.

Applanet is warez, although I'm sure everyone already knows that.

althou searching would help, ATT has disallowed the install of non-market apps. you need to be rooted with sideloading enabled.
So I got it rooted, but how do you enable sideloading? I still can't install anything from my sd card. I know sideload wonder machine works, but I have some apps backed up with titanium backup and would like to be able to restore on the inspire.

If you're using a rooted stock ROM this option won't be there, you'll need to use SideLoadWonder machine. Other ROMs have the option to allow non market apps in settings (i'm using Revolution and it's there)

Rooting means voiding your warranty.
I don't think you can screw if you follow instruction step by step. This is my first android phone but learning curve was just a few hours.
Revoultion ROM does have the option of non market apps.

[HOWTO][ROOT/CWM] Rooting the 04-29-11 HTC Update[FROYO]

EDIT: You can also just flash THIS by attn1 to accomplish the same goal.
The update for 1.84 for the Inspire 4G was released on 4-29-2011 as an OTA update. It WILL NOT RUN on rooted ROMs.
Things I have personally observed about this ROM:
Quick. Seems to respond very well to input, no real hesitations. I won't tell you quadrant scores because they are useless.
GPS WORKS! Exceptionally well. 3-6 FOOT accuracy. The highest TTL I have seen is 17s.
Fast. HSUPA is working well, 1.3mbps up. I hit 6mbps down on a regular basis with this ROM. YMMV, of course. But it works great here in North Texas.
Third party non market Apps install. Yes, you read that right. There is no selector to turn it on or off, though. They work for me. YMMV.
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE, COMPUTER, PLACE OF RESIDENCE, OR PETS.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prerequisites:
S-Off HTC Inspire 4G with microSD card inserted (HOW TO thanks to attn1)
RUU to stock 2.2.1 v1.80 (Located here thanks to cmstlist)
Gingerbreak v1.2 (From Chainfire) loaded on your SD Card
The OTA update note: place in /sdcard/download. This method is untested.
Sideload Wonder Machine if install of Gingerbreak does not work.
A valid Wi-Fi connection
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow these steps to achieve a rooted 2.2.1 v1.84 stock ROM
1. RUU your phone to stock following instructions provided in the above thread using the pd98img.zip method, NOT THE .EXE!
2. Boot phone, don't bother adding any accounts or setting anything but a wifi connection up.
3. Go to Settings, choose AT&T Software Update, then choose HTC Wi-Fi Software Update.
4. Download and install
5. Boot phone into updated stock ROM.
6. Install Gingerbreak v1.2 and run it. It will crash HTC Sense launcher, force close it, then you will see an error saying it could not reboot phone. Reboot manually using power button. If it gives you a weird error on boot such as a picture of a phone and a red mark, pull the battery then reboot.
7. ROOT! Yes, you now have root. Verify superuser.apk is in your app drawer, then I strongly recommend installing busybox from the market.
8. Install ROM Manager from the market and flash ClockworkMod Recovery. I have had no issues with 3.0.2.6.
That's it, done! I have had a couple small FC's from SU when first granting permissions to an app, to fix it open the actual superuser app then go back to the offending program. Once granted permissions this should not occur anymore.
I hope this helps!
If I missed anyone in the thanks above it was purely unintentional. PM me and I will correct the oversight.
I think you mean 3rd party apps is enabled? Not slideload.

a little "birdie" told me that at&t is rolling this out to 10K users a day for the first three days, then evaluating the results and - assuming all goes well - will bump up to 25K-50K users on 5/2, and then 50K users a day until done beginning 5/3 or 5/4. don't know for sure, though, if this is why you're having to wait for 1 more day.

If you downloaded the update prior going back to stock Un-rooted, then you need to either format you SD card or use another one. When I went back to stock, the update didn't show up for me, but as soon as I changed my SD card, the OTA came right up after I prompted for an update.

I wouldn't much worry about updating to this if your phone is rooted. Soon enough someone will have a rooted and CWR Flashable version of this. With so many good roms and Devs here I assume it wont be long.

Not trying to pile on, but... Seriously?
There's nothing difficult about the guide. The rooting techniques have been simplified as much as possible, for this phone.
Customizing this phone is going to require a little bit of effort on your part, it's not going to root itself.

So I just select one guide from the rooting thread from mudknof*
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yeah I know how you feel about rooting O/P but I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406 also androidcentral.com is another good site too if you have not been their already.
Also I would look into how to un-root the htc inspire just in case if you want to go back.
I had to watch the video a couple of times but it was not to bad but I do recommend this make sure your updated I know I had to do a wifi update then your good.
But if you have your phone all set up root will rest your phone all over again contacts will be their just if you added or did anything to it. It sucks it took me like 30 mins to set everything back up lol
Ok, I understand rooting gives you access and you have to downgrade your phone for rooting and then get a custom rom to pyt to a rooted current or future version. Am I right?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Well from what I read on roms, roms will give you customs look and some better features I have not added and Roms yet really just wanted to remove bloatware Im still reading about Roms and how to install them...Also I was just reading through the steps about rooting I think by far bubbys root is the easiest way to root.
lol I ask a lot of ?s ha http://forum.androidcentral.com/inspire-rooting-roms-hacks/88094-rom-t-stock-rom-sense-unroot.html
just in case you need it.. Cause I did root back to stock..which now Im thinking about rooting today.. Just cause I dont like the bloatware but which is nice about root it gives unknown sources thats if you DL and app rather then the market place right now I use Side Load Wonder Machine its a pain to go through the pc but unknown allows you to DL 3rd party off a site. but other then having bloatware removed and having unknown sources thats all I did for rooting. Helpful hint is also looking into how to make a back up of your phone just in case something messes up.
Thank you so much for your support everyone... so one final question... what is bloatware?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
bloatware is all the pre install apps and like the blockbuster ATT nav, yelp etc. even though this is for droidX it works the same just copy and past this -----> Droid X Bloatware Removal How To Android 2.2 FroYo <-------- in youtube and its the 1st, or you can use titanium backup Pro to freeze the bloatware which makes the OS of the phone think its not their anymore and you can unfreeze it later if you need it.. over all its to save some memory on the phone..
So how do i save all memory to my sd card before rooting?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
what do you mean memory? like in apps, pics? their is an app called app2Sd in the market https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&feature=search_result
that may help also heads up if you root you can do a back up with titanium back up and it restore your apps on that half Im not a 100% sure just google it one of the things I miss from my iphone is the itunes for backing up my apps.Still have not found a program thats like itunes for backing up apps fully and add them back if needed.
to bad you can just drag your apps to your Pc and save.. =(
But what will move my pictures and music to the sd card?
