[Q] back and getting an inspire, few questions. - HTC Inspire 4G

im not new to this forum, but im new to android, the inspire will be my first one. ive used wm 6.5 and i enjoyed it. right now im using a samsung impression and i hate it lol.
so on with some questions...
is their an app for me to have different text tones for each contact? (i like to know whos texting me so i can choose to answer it or not)
is their a good case besides the otter box? (the phone looks big, not sure if i wanna make it bigger. but i do want it protected)
how does android 2.2 that comes on the inspire compare to the new wm 7? (i decided against the wm 7 cause i saw the price on some of the apps and decided against it)

On stock android you can set individual tones, I think the inspire is the same.
Android 2.2 is miles ahead of windows phone 7. It's totally feature complete in comparison, tons of apps, and way more features. It's a no brainer.
Windows phone needs another 1.5 years of updates to match existing android 2.2. And by that time android will have progressed 1.5 years further ahead.

This is a god idea... I'm not sure if you can out of the box, but perhaps Handscent or another app could do this?

If you download Handcent SMS you can have individual text tones for contacts via the app itself. Plus it has more features and is better overall than the native texting app.

The phone is a little bigger, but it's pretty much all screen.
I don't have an otterbox, but I did try the hard plastic type seido case from best buy, and that did add a noticeable amount to the "grip-size" of the phone, for me, though I'm sure that extra beef goes farther in actually protecting the phone from a fall.
I settled on the TPU S-line wave case on eBay ($4 total, shipping included). It's the soft gel type, but unlike the body glove case (that's like ~$30) the cut-out for the camera lens/flash area matches exactly. The body glove's cut-out area for the camera/flash area is just a large rectangle, which leaves some of phone's chassis exposed.
Keep in mind some people have experienced GPS signal degradation with cases made by certain manufacturers (you'll have to do a search or check the accessories sub-forum to find out which ones).

Full review coming soon of HTC vs TMo vs Otterbox cases

There's been a lot of posts about cases lately and I'm obsessive over having the best suited case for my phones. As of last night I now have all the big name cases. The OEM "hard shell" case made by HTC, the hard rubberized one sold by T-Mobile, as well as the Otterbox. I'm working on a full review with pics in between my studying and classes so I'll try to have it up by late tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
I have to say I'm not FULLY satisfied with any of them, as they each definitely have flaws, but at least people will be able to see which one best suits their needs.

Sweet man! I've got the otterbox and the tmo hard rubber case, and i actually use the otterbox for the back and the rubber for the front. I love it. I'm interested to see what you do.

Just ordered the Otterbox since the HTC OEM snap on case isn't available anywhere!

If you have a rubberized one, it'll fit great.
And btw, what does OEM stand for? Haha
sent from my V I S I O N.
OEM is original equipment manufacturer, just means its an actual HTC product. Yea, right now I'm using the HTC front but I don't like how the camera button isn't covered. The tmo rubber one is just too sticky in my pockets and blocks both the top of the keyboard and the left side of the screen when trying to drag across home screens.

(Q) Screen touch test

Hi can someone here test if you see a red violet spot on screen when pressing a little harder in the bottom corner of the screen right above the search button. It only does it in that corner for me and not anywhere else. So I'm just wondering if this is normal.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
No noticeable color distortion when pressing the screen near the search button here.
Hope this helps!
Thank you. That really sucks for me. This is the 5th device I am going to return and this will be the last one...so many issues I can't believe it. BTW even if I press with my thumb right on the search button and press a little it show the color change mostly visible on white screen. Can you please try on the Google page or somthing with white background and press a little harder and hold it for 3 sec.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The only way I could get the distorted color to appear was using a significant amount of pressure.
Mine does it too in that corner. Little **** like that bothers the hell out of me

Mine doesn't do it until I press really hard... oh shi%$ I just pushed my finger all the way through the phone! Kidding....
But seriously, sounds like you need to take it back and swap for a new phone. It shouldn't be doing that.
Honestly, I can't imagine ever using that much pressure...I had to squeeze pretty hard. Are you guys seeing it under normal use?
@mj2508 Same here.. stuff like that bothers me that's why I want to know if it is every device that does this. If it is well maybe I can live with it, but if not its going right back to the store and I will never touch HTC again. I really like the phone otherwise but got way too many little issues with the build quality.

In t retro, mine has black squiggles when I press really hard, no red or violet though.

Well I don't really have to press very hard, just like a little hard and if you hold it you can see it more. But most visible on white background.

I know it's not what people want to hear, but you have to realize that the HTC Inspire 4G is the cheapest Android Smartphone EVER released, and the direction things are going are to make devices cheaper, and decrease build quality. This is the first of many new devices that'll come out like this.
Coming from iPhone, I noticed the volume and power rockers just aren't as firm, and the overall quality (ie the battery cover and the sim\msd cover) are just cheaply made. It was the same thing Blackberry did in 2009 when they went to a more plastic-based model line.
On the flipside, you can buy 2 for the same price as an iPhone, so you're really getting a good value.
Bottom line: You get what you pay for, and everyone was so shocked the no-commit price on the Inspire 4G was $399, now you know why.
But it's a great device!

You know who will be shocked, the sales man in the store when I return this thing for the 5th and last time. I mean I also like the phone but cheap quality just doesn't do it for me. They probably made the unibody metal so it will hide the cheap of this phone.

How hard did you have to press?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
About the same as mine which is way more than one needs to be pressed.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
On mine is very easy to do. No need to mash your thumb or anything. It's just like the pressure you would use to press the power button on top.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Tried again on google homepage, pressed normally and nothing. Pressed harder and nothing. Pressed really hard and I saw the ruby red blob. I'll never press that hard in normal use, ever.
No distortion here either. I mean, I pressed as hard as I would feel comfortable pressing on a lcd.
I can't imagine what problems the op had that necessitated going through four of these phones to get solved.
Try a Captivate sometime. STILL priced ~50-100 dollars MORE than an inspire, yet there are many, many people who are on their second or third captivate. I cut my losses on that one at #2.
Now THAT'S a ****ed up phone model.
Just because the the inspire is priced cheap doesn't mean its built cheap, or that because some people have problems, that its indicative of a cheap phone.

[Q] Do you have a screen protector on?

Just a fun little poll. Nothing else really going on anyway since this hasn't been released on tmo yet . Do you keep your screen protector that comes with the phone on? take it off and have it naked? or go out and buy a good screen protector?
At the moment mine its makes. No one has a good protector yet. But tomorrow tmobile should have some

Same here, desire hd screen is still in good nick. Also i use my leather pouch that came with my HD2 two years ago , sold the phone but kept the pouch, i knew it would come in handy one day and the sensation fits in it so nicely.
This phone is so beautiful, it'd be a shame to cover it in screen protectors or cases
i still have the stock protector on..lol. waiting for tmo to have theres
bought the HTC one from tmobile and it is fantastic, can't even tell it's on
I have the HTC protector from T-Mobile. Pain in the butt to put on and work out the bubbles. Looks ok, but scratches easily. Oh well, better it than the screen.

Is a screen protector even necessary?
I was at the T-Mobile store last week, looking at a G2X. I've been shopping there for years, and the manager knows I root and everything, and that I want the best phones when they're out. He also knows I'm hard on my phones, so he demonstrates the G2X's gorilla glass by bashing his keys into it. Nothing happens. He smashes the keys into the screen of the phone, beats the hell out of it, digs them in, everything, and nothing, not a scratch. Then, he latter goes "ooh, ooh, let me show you this cool phone we have in back" and he pulls a Sensation out of the back. I instantly fall in love. Thing is, I really am hard on the phones, and the gorilla glass would be a great benefit for me, as I've broken a few screen before now. I asked him if it had gorilla glass as well, he said he didn't know.
So, I went home, and looked online, and everywhere I go it says it does have gorilla glass.
My question is, after that long rambling rant, if these phones really do have gorilla glass, why bother with a screen protector?

I guess it's the extra care you want to put into the phone. I personally don't want to put a screen protector on but I have been placing them on my phones for the past 4 years. I don't want to take any chances lol
gorilla glass/sensational screen
while i think the GG definitely provides added protection, i would never advise being reckless like that. the one thing i did want to say which i havent seen anyone post yet was how clean the screen stays. i have had the phone since 6/12 and havent used a micro cloth once. while using outside i definitely noticed some streaks due to warmer temps and sweatier fingers, but they literally have disappeared. has anyone else noticed this? incredible self cleansing screen or dumb luck? ill take it as an added bonus. the phones getting better every day.
But if it has gorilla glass, you really aren't taking any chances. Have you seen this stuff?

After having a g1 for 22 months and finding this mt4g on craigslist for a damn near steal.. i can honestly say i dont really miss the keyboard anymore. I prefer a larger display screen so i can actually read the text without having to blow up the screen more times then i would like to remember for the g1. If they ever decide to make a 4.3 inch qwerty slider phone i might think twice but for now i'm content with touchscreen typing. It's not so bad with some settings turned off like auto correct and auto capitalize that more times then not actually mess up what im trying to type(****in annoying as hell).

Dot Case

So I saw the dot case in store on the display model, which we have all probably seen, However which the security device on the back side of the display models I was unable to notice this (see pictures) and I did not notice it in any of the reviews.
I really like the concept of the minimal 8bit lock screen which the dot case and further more the option to answer and make calls without opening is a great plus.
That said it's a shame I won't be using the case now that I have it. The lid does not close flush on the back when open which means the right hand must simple hold the phone and case preventing the right thumb from being able to be used to type / navigate on the screen. And if you were to not hold the lid flush against the back your left and can not maintain a firm grip on the phone because the lid is a tpu material which renders it a bit slippery.
This disappoints me because I really like the features it add.

This has been mentioned in the Dot View review thread, Others have said it is nearly impossible to type with the cover folded back unless you are really pushing on it.
The case itself does not appear to provide much, if any protection to the back and sides. The Dot View look is cool but with the lack of protection and the flip cover not laying flat, I passed.

Same here after playing with it in store. More of a "cheap gimmick" case imo. Looks cool at night to show off to Ur friends but for any protection, day to day use, and the dot dirt it leaves on screen. Obviously not much thought went into this case outside of the "gimmicks."
Maybe if a soft see through cloth was on the inside of the lid so no dot dirt goes on device, lid actually was flexible to bend back and stay there, feel secure when closed, and had more protection then a cheap $5 knock off case, it would be well worth the $30 maybe $40 tops. Watch a cheap Chinese knock off becomes available on eBay in a few months with all these improvements and half the price, lol!

Not flaming, serious question.... Are you saying that you remove your case when texting or otherwise using your phone?
Imo a if your a case type of person wouldn't u want a case to leave on at all times?
I even like the display when the lid is on, in fact once we have write on the /system I fully intend on making it an optional lock screen when no security it being used.

Not a problem. I figured I'd either get some people prepared for what to expect or at least save some people a few bucks from buying something they will end up not using cause as of right now I have yet to see any in store and had I had the opportunity to play with it before hand I would not have bought it.
Having said all that if someone still wants it pm me and I'l send you mine,
Be moral if you actually want it let me know if you just want it cause it's free please let someone else have it

Let me clear it up a little. Lol. I don't remove my cases to text. Lol. I remove them period, as soon as I hop in my ride after work. I hate cases. Only reason I use one is so I don't get my phone all greasy while at work, I'm a kitchen manager and a chef. Hope that clears up my comments a little.

Haha yeah that's pretty understandable lol my thoughts were a bit exaggerated hehe
I just stick my index finger between the case and the flap and the rest of my fingers on the outside to hold it in place. No problem texting for me.
