[Q] gestures to substitute button - XPERIA X10 Themes and Apps

Hey guys, whats up?
Think that some of you must face the same problem as I am.
Due to repeated stress of pressing the buttons, I can feel that they are begining to feel a little mushy...
I tried to find any gesture based app but couldn't find it... Like, if you slice to the left, it would "go back" if you slice up, it would bring menu, etc.
Do you guys know of something like that?
I've been using adw-ex and it opens apps, notification and such but it wont act as the buttons...
Thanks!

App Switcher

I have seen the app switcher pop up a couple times while playing with the phone but I can't figure out what I did to access it. Does anyone know the trick?

Hold the home button down at the bottom. Was that what you were talking about?

That's it, thank you! Now I feel stupid.
dont, this was my first android experience yesterday as well. there are more hidden goodies. Enjoy. Dont forget to click the menu button in the bottom right on like every screen lol. You never know when it will pop up some secret menu and when it wont rofl.

Disable Soft Capacitive Buttons

Since i use vegan tab and have all the soft buttons on the screen at all time (home, menu, back) is there anyway to disable the capacative ones so that i dont actually hit them while holding the tab?
bump ^^^ anyone??? robeet?
I asked something like that earlier, but no one responded. There's a thread under Themes and Apps about Settings Catcher. Maybe a concept like that could be used, in the opposite way (assign invalid activities), to essentially make the keys do nothing?
Jim
This is definitely possible to do.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/usr/keylayout. I am guessing it's the file gpio-keys.kl in that directory.
For a guide as to how this works, check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing you can map those keys to something like ENDCALL that doesn't have a meaningful activity associated it with it on our tablets. Or maybe there's a null activity or something like that.
You'll have to experiment a bit. I haven't tried any of this yet myself.
hmmm, pull out the device back and unclip it?
Seriously though, I'm not certain. Possibly it's linked to the file /usr/keylayout/tegra-kbc.kl. So you might be able to REM out some of these and it could actually disable the tactile buttons.
How would you get out of a full screen app that hides the status bar?

Yeah i didnt think of that. damn... its just annoying when im in the browser or something and i hit it by accident
I was hoping to find an app/hack that would let me set the duration of a soft key press required to register as a stroke. It would then be easy to make a widget to turn the delay on and off for times when you know you will be more prone to bump the buttons.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas on the above or disabling them completely. I (or one of my kids) *always* bump one of the capacitive buttons while using the gtab. It is frustrating, infuriating even, when you're in the middle of something and BAM, you have to start over.
TIA!
If you could get rid of the buttons you can just use button savior. I'm using the zeam launcher in fullscreen and barely ever touch the buttons on the side now

I use 'Button Remapper' to map the hard buttons to 'focus' which effectively disables them. I then use 'Buttton Savior' to provide on-screen buttons.
Works well and ends the frustration of the buttons not being back-lit or accidently hitting them when holding the tablet.
Thank you! I think that will do the trick. Do you use the galaxy tab version?
ETA: just searched the market from my Droid and saw a third vanilla version of button remapper. I will go with the assumption that its this one.

can I change the lockscreen?

Good afternoon XDA.
I'm wondering if anyone has any guidance on how I can change the lockscreen on the G2x?
I am rooted with clockwork installed. I know if I install cm7 I'll have more options but currently that rom doesn't allow me to have data, calls only.
I have searched high and low for settings for the lockscreen and can't find any.
here's my problem. I was spoiled by cm6 and 7 on mytouch slide. With the G2x the buttons aren't real buttons so they don't actually pull the phone out of sleep. The only button that does that is the power button at the top. And then the only way to get past the lock screen is to gesture from left to right. I absolutely hate that whole gesture to unlock thing. I know it was nifty for nifties sake when it was first done a couple years ago and has become standard since then. But I hate it. it's uncomfortable and annoying. I just want to pull my phone out, push a button and start doing what I need to do. Sometimes it's just check a widget on my desktop. Now I have to fumble around swiping to do that.
On the mytouch with CM i could just double click the trackpad our menu button and it would unsleep then unlock easy as that.
Please if anyone knows a way to get past the lock screen with a button press or get rid of the lockscreen entirely so it unlocks as soon as it unsleeps please let me know.
dream scenario: push volume button and phone comes out of sleep, push volume button again to get past lockscreen.
widget locker can disable the lockscreen i believe
other than that i dont know of any apps that would let you hit the volume button to wake up the phone
CM7 would definitely be the easiest way to get it done, but unfortunately it looks like it wouldnt work out for you.
CM7 might get the option to wake with the volume keys...
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,3255
The code is there, it just hasn't been merged yet...
I found this application and tried it out. It takes a second to unlock, but one press of the power button gets you in.

That is such great news. I'm definitely going to CM7 when data works on it because I can't imagine using my phones for a long time without cyanogen on them.
And thank you to the people who gave app suggestions, i'm going to check those out.
Where is whitehawx when you need him lol!

[Q] How to properly quit apps?

Hello everyone,
I bought a HOX yesterday and broke up with my iPhone. Two words: awesome phone.
Anyway, I am a little confused about how the multitasking works. For example if I am done with an app, say the default radio app, how to a quit it properly? So it doesn't hog ram. Though I also read something here on the forums that you shouldn't quit apps since it doesn't matter if they are running or not to the ram.
So I thought, well okay I'll stop caring about that. Then I tested the Navigation app, set it to navigate to nearest BK and then quit it (using the "home" btn). 3 minutes later I hear from my pocket "Turn left". wtf?
So yeah, when I unlocked the hox I saw the GPS icon up to the left, meaning that it was still running. I can't find a quit option?
A little side question too:
Is there any app I really really should download now because it will make my phone so much better/longer battery life/faster? (Not ROMs, I'll wait with that)
All help appreciated, since I am a noob

quiting apps is easy just click on the exit or x button if available and if there is no exit button or icon just keep on pressing the back keys. As for your gps you can turn it off in the phone settings or if its on android just pull down the notification and there is an options there to turn gps on and off. You can also download task killer to instantly kill running apps though others doesnt recommend it but it is useful in a way.
well gps navigation have usualy EXIT/QUIT button. And if they dont have it, press BACK button (in the Main Menu) few times and it askes you if you really want to quit the navigation or something like that. Navigon has definitelly one of those options.
The back button is The preferred method to quit an applicatiin. You can also use task manager. I am also parted way with my iPhone 4. I am now happy on my heavily mod GS3.

What I meant when I said "Navigation app" is Google Navigation, the built in one It doesn't have a main menu or an exit button

I believe the best way to quit an app is by continuosly pressing the back key until it gets to the home screen, or the app will give a prompt saying "are you sure you would like to quit?"
Otherwise, its just jamming the back button

yeah i usually just use the back button or if there's a menu where i can click quit to make sure
Lol I must be blind. Found the menu now, little button down to the right.
It also worked mashing the back button
Thx everyone!

Recent Apps Home Key Press Duration

I'm usually one who doesn't like to sit and wait around having to hold a button to get something to work, and I don't usually have a heavy hand so I prefer a very short press and hold period. Is there any way to modify how long we have to hold down the home button to see the recent apps?
I changed the home button action in nova launcher so that it first goes to my main home screen. If it is already there a single press of the home button opens the recent apps list.

But what about if you aren't already at your launcher? Say... you're using Chrome and want to go to recent apps, right now it takes a press an hold of around 2 seconds or so. I would like to know how to change this to reduce it to a second or perhaps less.
In that case I hold it until the recent apps shows up. So I guess nova launcher settings only help if you're not in an app.

But that's exactly my point, is that right now you just hold it until recent apps shows up, which is like two seconds. To me personally, this is too long. I usually have quick hands and do everything really quickly, the long press I use for Swiftkey is set to 200ms. This is why I think it would be nice to change the recent apps to maybe a second or so, I'm just not sure how to go about doing this.

I was thinking of the same sort of thing before discovering Sheffy007's nav bar thread. I now think the nav bar is a more elegant solution.
If you're not a fan of the Nav Bar, you could study the changes he made to the key files and possibly swap home and recent apps (pressing home brings up recent apps, holding home brings up the home screen).

Would a launcher help this issue?
Couldn't you set the double click assigned to the siri like Samsung voice to go to recent apps instead? That would be much faster...

On cm10 I have my recent apps set to long press menu, it's less annoying than holding the physical home button just my. 02

I'm fine with the use of the long press home button for recent apps, I just wish I didn't have to hold it for so long, although a double press wouldn't be bad either.
It seems like this should be an easy fix though, if we can just figure out where the file is that says to wait 2000ms before bringing up the recent apps, it should be as simple as changing that to a smaller number, shouldn't it?

I looked through the SQL Lite DB on my device (TW based ROM), /system/usr/keylayouts and decompiled framework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, and SystemUI.apk. I briefly looked through everything and the closest thing I could find was in framework-res/res/values/integers.xml
<integer name="config_longPressOnHomeBehavior">2</integer>
I don't think that's it, but it's worth a shot (nandroid first). Anyone else know where button duration is set?
I think this closely relates to what mybook already found, but I found this in framework-res/res/values/public.xml:
Code:
7946 | <public type="integer" name="config_longPressOnHomeBehavior" id="0x010e001d" />
Still has nothing to do with the duration, but it might be able to lead us to the duration.
I've noticed since flashing CM10 that the long press seems to much quicker, around a second or so, meaning this must be possible somehow.
I was searching for the exact functionality when i got to this thread, and I was disappointed. Surely someone in XDA can accomplish something like this?
I was hoping there would be a file somewhere in the root dir that holds the settings to this long press duration in an integer. Something like the sys/class/leds/led-backlight/brightness file that sets the softkey brightness to zero, effectively turning it off, which is really useful for night reading.
Has still nobody figured it out? :crying:
