So after running speed test both as an app on my phone and tethering or using my phone as a wireless hotspot I have noticed something. When using speedtest on my phone my DL speeds are about 1.1mb and up about 1.0mb. Now tethering or using it as a wireless hotspot my DL is 1.33 and UL is 0.30. Why is my UL speed so damn slow when I'm tethering?
Tethering speeds come from your actual phones service. So if your device doesn't have enough reception your tether wont send enough either.

I find myself not using wifi much now that I have 4g speed. I'm fact my 4g speed is faster than my wifi Anyone else find themselves not using wifi as much now? With my incredible I had to use wifi since 3g was only 3meg compared to my wifi which gets about 12 meg down.

Maybe a few times a week , which is.hardly ever. The 4g speeds in chicagoland area are so fast I forget about using the wifi networks I'm around. Since wifi uses less power than mobile data should probably be using it for better battery life though

I use wifi on my T bolt because no 4G is in my state yet even... I know fail
I never use wifi on my Thunderbolt. My home internet is fast (~25 Mbps), but I don't need it to be that fast on my phone. I have 4G in my area and get around 18-20 Mbps with my TB.
All the time when at home. Added benefit of accessing home network shares.
I use it whenever i can, not 4G where i live. Some parts of the island have....not my part.
I only use Wifi when I'm at home since my apartment gets terrible reception (3 bars on 1X). If I go outside on the balcony I get full 3G though.
Only when I dont have LTE coverage when traveling. Thats literally it. 4G is just too good.
Never use wifi now, 4g is about 8meg for me which is much faster than my home wifi.
I haven't even turned wifi on yet. Had the phone since day 1 release.

I use wifi whenever it's available so mostly at home and at school. It saves on battery and I don't have 4g yet so it's a no brainer

LTE > Wifi > 3g for me, but I use WiFi when I can, and LTE when I'm travelling somewhere that has it.

I am rooted with Wireless Tether, and getting about 16mbps out of the 4g. My internet company can shove it! Also play Xbox through it!
I dont think I will be able to see that much of a difference between wifi or 4g, plus why would you not run wifi? unless you really like your phone plugged in to a charger all day. Battery life burns much faster on 4g then it does on wifi, yes I am rooted.
I use WiFi whenever I'm at home. 4g is faster but WiFi is better on my battery and is almost as fast as 4g

Same here. I live near LA and although i would love to try 4G, i wont be going out of my way to do so, which means wifi whenever its available.
I use wifi almost all day, everyday. Only exception is when I'm driving around.
As soon as I get home I disconnect bluetooth from my truck and turn on wifi. I average 10-12mps down which is about the same as 4g in my area and wifi doesn't eat my battery like 4g does.

Almost every day, i hardly use wifi hot spots though.
I'm on 4g tethering and for some reason it just stop loading pages evening though i have connection or it takes forever to load...i switch to 3g and its fast...is Verizon stop 4g because they know i'm tethering?
Might just be an area of weak coverage on 4g. Not really sure at all though.

I am assuming the photon only does ad-hoc. I have tried changing wifi tether to epic, evo, galaxy tab with no luck. I cant get the touchpad to discover my photon to try the bluetooth method. Any ideas?

I thought using wifihotspot works and the tp picks up the signal and connects

Im using the wifi tether app, not the built in hotspot

TP does not support Adhoc tething and some android phones can only do adhoc tethering and not true wifi/hotspot. I know some Android phones are using the beta version of wireless tethering but my phone won't run it, keep getting errors. So someone like me can't use their phone with their TP unless someone can develop a patch that would allow TP to accept Adhoc connections.
I am looking for the solution to this same problem. I have a photon and have used the wifi-tether app and my touchpad will not detect it. I know its because of the ad-hoc mode but is there a patch I can dl on the touchpad that can support ad-hoc mode?
we might have to wait until the port is done. Hopefully they will write it in.
tethering apk
I tether with my evo3d using beta v3 and I also tether with my wifes EVO shift and its using a tethering app from the market. No issues works with 3g and 4g

Can't tether with my iPhone 3G and Vodafone 845. I know the phones can't do infrastructure mode, so it's obviously a limitiation of the touchpad/webOs lacking support for ad-hoc wifi.
We need something that at least enables ad-hoc mode on the touchpad, even better a new BT stack with DUN/PAN included.

what(Preware) Kernel are you using?
I can tether to my X10a using 2.3.3 as a hotspot. I don't have the micro to micro usb to try the usb tether.
What I really like is the unmentioned 5Ghz Wifi. I can get 40 mbps via speedtest.net (I have 50 mbps at home).

I believe the evo's have infrastructure capabilities, where the photon does not.

You need to use the built in tethering. I know Motorola has infrastructure mode. Not sure if the photon has the entitlement hack.
Trolling from my ATRIX 4G on probably the crappiest main US carrier
why cant i tether 4g on my sprint nexus s only 3g and the speeds are horrible
Probably because you can't do a search.
what do you mean by that?
If you knew how to search, you would know the answer. You aren't the first person to discover this.

Even though the stock tethering app will not tether 4G, ff you install Wireless Tether from the market, I believe you can tether 4G.
I am in an LTE area, so have 10+ Mbps downstream on my One X. However, when I tether my iPad (mini) to the One X (using the WiFi Tether app for rooted phones), I get very slow speeds: 100-200 Kbps.
In terms of other tether apps, I tried FoxFi and get even worse performance. Barnacle doesn't seem to work (after loading the apk, it claims there is no root/su privileges). With SVTP, the iPad can't seem to connect to the hotspot.
I am running Nocturnal ROM with Elemental kernel. Any thoughts? Have others encountered this issue?
Did you try running the speedtest app on your phone. Then tethering your iPad and running the speedtest app on that?

I always use the built in wifi hotspot app and have always had good results. I'm in a LTE area 99% of the time and get the same LTE speeds on my Galaxy Tab when tethered to my phone.

Yes, my phone has about 10 Mbps up/down. The iPad is getting 0.14 Mpbs down and 0.06 Mbps up.
I believe this is the stock WiFi hotspot android app...
