Windows Mobile 6.1 Only
Thought of starting this thread to get an idea of GPS performance on OEM and Custom ROMS with different radios. According to most threads and my personal experience the GPS performance is sub-par on 6.1 and highly unreliable. It would be great if I can get some feedback on the following:
1. ROM Version
2. Radio
3. Time for Cold Fix
4. Time for Hot Fix
5. QuickGPS Version
I think this thread would help lot of members who rely on GPS navigation on a day to day basis to make up their mind on ROM/Radio combo - specially me.
Thanks.

So you are back on 6.0 permanently? I have been debating on this for over a week now
Have a look at this link - no real answer to this issue but possibly one of the recomendations will work for you

Thanks for the detailed feedback.
If you don't mind me asking are the above results constants or random. I am wondering whether this odd behavior is device or device/radio/rom related. Some don't have this issue at all and some do. Beats me.
It's all very bizarre, I've been watching posts on this for weeks trying to see some kind of pattern, but there just doesn't seem to be one. Some people have serious problems (like me), others have perfect GPS, but not one of them seems to be on quite the same combination of ROM/radio/SPL etc - or rather those that are seem to be split randomnly between the two camps.
It's a very frustrating topic to get into, because you'll inevitably get people telling you the problem doesn't exist (because they've not seen it) or offer some magic bullet that just doesn't work.
For the record I'm using the stock HTC WWE 6.1 rom/radio. Whenever I try to get a lock just walking down the street, or on the bus, it can take up to 20 minutes at times. The other weekend I was actually using it in anger on a roadtrip, relying on it for directions, and it worked brilliantly for two solid days, with lock times mostly under a minute. It just doesn't make any sense. I'd say it was unreliable, but when I actually did need to rely on it, it came through.
1. ROM Based on HTC Official 3.29.707.0
2. Radio 1.65.20.29
3. ColdFix - 20-seconds - (you mean following a soft-reset right?)
4. HotFix - 2-seconds - (hotfix is when you have closed down your GPS App (TomTom in my case) and then restarted it but haven't soft-reset the device right?)
I am counting from after TomTom starts and immediately when it begins to talk to the GPS module (if you go to the GPS Status screen it initially says 'No GPS device!', then a couple of seconds later the little yellow/black circular symbol begins to flash and it says 'Poor GPS reception' - this is when I am timing it from from).

Agreed 100%.
Just when I tell myself it's working the problem starts again. I used to be so content with the 6.0 GPS performance.
Furthermore, I think the device plays a major role as well. There is no reason for 2 identical phones having stock rom updates to spit out two different GPS lock times. Although I complain about mine the longest lock time for me have been 3 minutes.

I have just tested this again, just to verify...
Soft-reset, wait a couple of minutes for Kaiser to settle down and then start TomTom and open the GPS Status screen, wait for 'Poor GPS reception' to appear and start timing..
1. Cold-Fix this time was 28-seconds.
2. Hot-Fix this time was 6-seconds.
Still quite good though
I am actually sat in the house with the Kaiser next to the window but it is quite a clear day.

Constant, give or take 1-2 seconds.
Edit-
To Boinng,
Although I have little issue getting GPS reception, I must say that when I was running Garmin's ROM, and one of Dutty's (don't remember which one of the 1000's), my GPS signal was great, but my software performed really poorly; sometimes only updating in 1 mile increments.
TT7 vs. TT6???
I seem to be getting much slower starts since I converted to TT7. I tried this morning and after 5 minutes, just ended up resetting my quick GPS and then it took about 45 secs.. I've done the change to "other NMEA . . . " and no consistent result.
I also have no idea why the radio would make a difference with this as I've always thought that only dictated your phone reception and that the GPS was in itself its own device. Any clarification would be appreciated.
Breakthrough?
I just posted this in another thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2393635#post2393635
Basically it looks like my own GPS performance has been improved substantially by switching from the 1.65.16.25 radio (the one which came with the original HTC 6.1 update) to the newer 1.65.17.56, which they seem to have quietly snuck out with a new version of the same ROM (the ROM itself is still 3.28.405 so I just used the radio only version someone posted).
I wouldn't say it was quite 6.0 level, but it's a lot closer, for me anyway.
I did have to install HardSPL 3.28 (to replace the stock HTC SPL 3.28) first before I could change radio, I suppose it's possible that had a bearing too?

I have tried this and it works sometimes but not constant - at least on my device. This bug is killing me. I rely on Navi almost everyday and would hate to go back to 6.0.
Also I have noticed that even hot fix times vary with 6.1.
With 6.0 I used to get hot fix under 15 sec. indoor all the time.
My question to all....
Although we blame OS, Radio and SPL can this symptom be device related too?
i am also in the same boat as most of you the GPS just plain sucks ass on my kasier no matter what the radio rom combination it seems. i use the application Seagate which is just like quickGPS and i also use quickGPS sometimes its super fast on cold starts sometimes its more than 25 minutes and i give up because of battery drain for nothing. i dont want to go back to 6.0 period so i hope we can all work on this and get things working properly. i wonder what .dll's are in control of the GPS and what parts of the radio rom also control the GPS that would be a good place to start and see what we can modify a little for better performance.
Using GPS Test:
1. ROMeOS V.3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406346
2. New NEON 1.65.24.36 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406995
3. Time for Cold Fix- about 1 minute
4. Time for Hot Fix- <10 seconds
5. QuickGPS Version 1.00 (220.821)
6. AT&T in Central PA

It took a few SR's before the GPS and the new radio clicked, but it did make a huge diffrence here in AZ. I had the same 20+min (if ever) fixes on a cold start before and getting an indoor fix was a laugh, hot or cold. I just did an indoor hot fix in under 20 secs! Cold fix indoors is somewhat dependant on where, but after running visual GPS, no issues
Death V.4 plus the latest Kaiser (not neon) radio seems to be the charm for me, but maybe it IS handset/local specific.
I just wish the handset silencing issue was fixed, but I digress . . .
WM 6.1 HTC OEM official
OS 3.02.405.0 WWE
radio 1.58.26.20
coldfix -- about 1 minute
hotfix -- 5-6 seconds
I was surprised to have hotfix this fast. and the battery goes way longer than on 6.0.
great radio indeed.
a support me because suddenly goes into pending the pda while running tomtom, I have done all combinations of energy but still the same!
I use "ttn7.916.9189_qvga_black" on my Topaz together with Dutty`s HG1 rom and it`s works like a charm.

same here with tess 3.9 rom. In fact, since using 6.5 rom, the problem with voice clipping off before the end of the message (usually skipping all distances information) is gone, without even using the workaround that was needed with 6.1 ( silent wav/mp3 looping in background). Very happy about the 6.5 upgrade regarding TomTom (i do not know if the official 6.5 solves the issue, but I guess so)
I know exactly what TS means; I had the same on my Topaz. It is even been send back to Brussels (repair center Europe) and it came back OK. After a week or so, while driving with tomtom: screen blanks. I posted several threads about this on XDA, no solutions however. The screen went blank/phone suspend mode, no matter what settings I used in Energy settings. Even unchecking the boxes (so the phone should stay on, no matter what) didn't help: suspend mode after 30 seconds. After 30 minutes on external power.
After I upgraded to WM6.5, the problem is over.
I am having a tough week ! my ppc has started doing hardreset instead of softreset and at some point it has stopped booting. I have been able to revamp the ppc reinstalling wm6.1 (wow! It has been so long ...). So far seems to work except the gps: the driver seems to be detected but no gps signat at all (neither igo nor amigo do detect it). Any ideas on how to revive the gps or check if it is alive or not??
Try changing your radio some new radio's don't work well with old os's and vice versa.
I will try but both the radio and the gps have been working for months with no problems. thanks and any other suggestion is welcome

same problem for me!
Gps always work fine but when i flash to wm6.5,it start to not working...
So i return to the old rom and...not working again..
flashing various rom and radio but nothing...
Now i try to test it with htc gps tool but no satellites fix..
In "satellite" tab, i can see only 1 satellite in the north...it changes number, but no the position...
Any idea?
I was lucky and everything came back to normality,
do not know why, I flashed 6.1 and gps was taking no signal, again 6.5 and it only got two satellites for a long time. then when I was starting to read about wm7... It is working again.
I have three theories:
1) flashing and reflashing does not completely erase all memories, so sometimes thinks mess up
2) a fatal combination of timedate and timezone somehow messed gps quickgps files, which combined with 1) resulted in a fatal combination
3) my wife was pissed off with me, the polaris, or both.
No idea what happened and why it works now !!

even wierd, i cannot androidinstall with 1-6.nbh. got into blank screen, and stays there. flash it twice with task29 still not working. than i get back to 24-5.nbh and it works
till the moment the faster gps fix i have seen is with the nbh of february, but you miss all the updates in the other apps...
i could downgrade from 1.06 to 28.05 nbh normally without reinstall system, but still slow.
only difference is that seems to find more satellites with more strenght...but fix 5 or 6 minutes.

@ahhl
I think that dzo release only one nbh in the future and we have to use Loser's NBH Editor v3.0 to change panel type in the future.
which android is ver 2.x
myn rl5 still ver 1.6 isn't it?
what else we can run on our polaris? i am willing to try. so far only myn rl5 work best in term of speed, workable gps, bt,wifi.
Tried Aqtrans' CM-5.07 V1.3
First GPS fix ... a lot of time
but later it makes hot start and get a fix in 4-5 secs
Suffering eclair problems though....
6-7 sec to open phone dialer
no camera..
GPS TESTS
Hi, I made a several test with GPS... I used GPS Test application. In many times the GPS Test show that the phone has got for example 5-6 satellietes "in view" but zero "in use", so it couldn't lokate the position etc. Sometimes it helped that I turn off the phone, remove the battery for 10s and after that sometimes the phone can "use" the satellites for positions but only until the phone goes to sleep, after wake up the phone again dosn't use any satellites... :-(
[Pola100] ; [NAND] ; [Myn’s Warm Donut RLS 5 - 04/24/2010] ; [DZO nbh 24-05-10 panel1] ; [bt/wifi fix update]
i resolve the problem change completely my setup
Today I tried NAVIGON 7.
It works, but with a lot of problems:
- Sometimes it freezes all system (only a reset can resolve)
- Very slow on menu
- GPS position is missed for some seconds, then is fixed for some seconds, then is missed for some seconds (and so on.... fixed/missed).
My setup is Vanilj Rls5 with zImage 29.04.10 and 2 Gb (1.30 Fat32, 256 ext2, 256 ext2). But My Fat32 partiton has very very few space free (5 Mb Free).
Any suggestions ?
Remove some maps
I have Only Italian Maps on Navigon.
My SD is almost full because in the same Partition Fat32 I have WinMo and Android data on SD (but for Android I selected System and Data on Ext2).
I will try to make more free space... but i don't think this is problem.

Wait, gps take much time to recover position from a cold start.
hi! today i've found a working solution for all users with non working GPS!
I know, my GPS has worked unter WM and the android SD Version update-cm-7.2.0-RC0-photonic-KANG-signed.
After the switch to 4.0.4. munjeni's ICS and the latest GPS Patch, on my phone GPS will not work!
after my search for a reason for a corrupt GPS i've tried some workarounds.
also to reinstall WM6.5!
the interested thing, also under WM, GPS is no more working. (windows is seaching and seaching ...... )
i've found a interesed note: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498693
it seems GPS was blocked from an older andriod version!!!!!
in my case - the SD version you can see in the first line.
now i've reactived the saved SD version, start the GPS in google maps, it takes some secounds to found my location via GPS.
in this active state and working GPS, i've removed the battery!
flash back to the new LK and restored my whole saved ROM include the GPS fix!
after the boot, start your navi-software or google maps - now your GPS should works fine - you can see the icon in the left corner!!
also the sw tells me, my location was set by GPS!
thats great!
I hope, i could help all other users with munjeni's great custom rom 4.0.4. ICS!
PS: not working is his blue camera fix! -
I use the solution to modify the file to get the right result (but blue preview). that is ok for me!
also i can live with the 3G bug! If i want to google, I activate 3G and after browsing, i switch back to 2G.
bad is the mono audio! i hope, we will get an update soon!?
howto
mini howto:
to check, if your GPS blocked, save your current ROM!!
flash your original WM to your fon and look in google maps, if GPS find any satellites.
in my case, it does not found any satellites. (but it activated the GPS Modul).
the device was there, but it seems blocked!
now you have to flash to the Android ROM as you know, your GPS works correctly!
start that ROM and activate the GPS with an application (like google maps or an navigator software)
in my case, gps founds satellites during some seconds (10 or 20 seconds)
also the ROM tells me, my location was set through GPS.
in this state, you have to remove the battery!!!!
flash back to the latest LK and restore your ROM from the first!
boot, start google maps or navi and you will see the GPS in the left upper corner on your hd mini.
have fun and be happy
Thank you!
Thank you very much, dear pinky999!
Your solution helped me to re-enable GPS on my mini!
After reading your post I first tried the latest sdcard version I used - photonic CM 7.2 (this had no effect),
and then tried another sdcard android that I used before photonic - r175 with sense - AND THIS DID THE TRICK! HOORAY!
Thank you once more
