[Q] USB Tethering for Defy Froyo - Defy Android Development

I want to sharing Defy's wifi for PC via usb connection.
I tried to setup. Refer to this page: http://www.android.com/tether#usb
But at the fourth step, why I can't find the Tethering & portable hotspot in Wireless & networks.
I'm using the Pays ROM v5.1.

Because Motorola removed it. Install Barnacle from Market =)

Blamed Moto.
Thank for your answer.
Barnacle is not the solution.

I am using the original 2.1 Motorola ROM. In Settings, Wireless & network settings, Mobile networks, I have a check box called Internet Tethering. If I activate then, I can successfully use my phone internet connection on the PC via USB. You need to have the motorola drivers, set the phone USB onto Portal and Tools, and then create a dial up connection using Motorola USB as the modem and dial *99#. I did not need a username or password so I left them blank.

You use defy as modem in your pc so that your pc can use defy's internet connection via wifi.

Internet sharing

Does anyone know if I can connect my laptop to internet via my phone, T-zone internet, by using Internet sharing? I failed to do this. Can someone give me an instruction? thanks
hey buddy, you need to have data connection on, when you connect your phone via usb and internet sharing enable. Make sure you have tmo's proxy configured in your T-Mobile Data Connection.
Work with phone but Laptop
Yes my phone is able to connect to internet by itself, Tzone with proxy setup, but I would like to go to internet by using my laptop and use the phone as modem by running internet sharing program but It failed to connect.
what you are asking about is turning your laptop into a hotspot and connecting to the internet using the wifi not regular nework. is that it

you need to connect the phone to your computer via bluetooth and your computer will see the phone as a modem then setup the a new connection with the phone and voila.
I am using usb cable to connect it. I am running NBD 8.2.
not sure how to make it work on the cable but with 8.2 you should be able to connect the phone to the PC and turn on dialup networking via serial port over bluetooth

I never tried this before. I will try it tonight.
You have to set up the same proxy server in your web browser on your laptop as the one you have set up for the t-mobile internet on your phone.
Not sure really if its different for T-Mobile or not but i'm with Cingular and I use my wizard as my primary internet source for my desktop. Connect your phone via USB, let AS connect, then turn on internet sharing. It'll disconnect AS and display on internet sharing if its connected or not. Hopefully this helps.

No problem, glad I could help. I figured that out a few weeks ago the day after I got back from a business trip where I stayed in hotel that didn't have an internet connection and no wifi spots anywhere close. Wish I had thought to try that sooner.

Reverse Tethering?

At work, there's no Wi-Fi and no T-Mobile signal.
Is there a way to use my PC's network connection to provide data to my phone? I have a rooted Android phone.
I´m also looking for this.
It is the same thing we can do with ActiveSync in Windows Mobile: you get internet access trough your PC...
I hope someone can help us with any clue.
Thank you.

Like USB tethering? I thought there was a USB tethering app on the market.

Hi both of you!
It's called ad hoc network, if you have Vista or Windows 7, do like this:
Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Set up a new connection or network -> Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer to computer network) -> Follow instructions!
Good luck
You forgot to mention the tiny problem that Android has do damn Ad-Hoc support....
honestly just try starting your own network go grab a wifi dongle thats capable and go from there that or get a wireless router and try that sharing the internet connection to the router OR bluetooth connection if your phone is capable ! many different ways ive tried them all but usb tethering ive never heard of out side of wm os
It is possible...
I wrote about this before. It is possible to do via usb cable if you use Sense as it is a standard feature in Sense connection... Just plug in and you can choose to use PC internet connection.
I have done it a lot with my PC

My custom rom (x10 mini pro) support ad hoc as far as i know.
Connectify
If you are using Windows7, you might want to take a look at Connectify. Just google "connectify for windows". I can't post outside links yet.
Direct from their website:
Take any Internet connection and share it wirelessly with no additional hardware, wires, plugs, or chargers
Easily connect any number of Wi-Fi enabled devices to your network including desktop computers, laptops, phones, gaming systems, and more
Don't break the bank paying for multiple Wi-Fi connections on the road, Connectify is ad-supported and free to download and use.

Adhoc can be made to work
Check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755254
Of course this would need a wifi dongle in your work PC, will admins allow that?
in the newer roms with gingerbread it's an option to do this when you plug in your phone.

[Q] solved - connect with wifi dongle to pc internet connection

how can i do that? thx
Do you mean you want your phone to share its internet via wifi tethering?

no, i mean access internet from pc, via wireless usb dongle
Might want to be a bit more specific there. From what you're saying, it sounds like you're trying to do what bedalus said.
If what you mean is that you want to access your wired internet service wirelessly to your phone, you're going to need to pick up a wireless router or something.

What PS do u have? With Windows 7 you can create an ad-hoc under network sharing center -> set Up a Connection or Network -> Set up a wireless ad hockey (computer-to-computer) network. Then you can just follow the instructions on the pc

Yes you are right. Nexus s does not support ad hoc. I am sorry, I did not know that. This is weird even iDevices support it.
You can try ZT180 adhoc switcher from the market. But I cannot guarantee it will work. Because I have not tried it by myself.
Another option is using Connectify from windows 7 PC. I don't know about apple PCs. But connectify can turn your windows 7 PC into a real access point router. Not just a ad-hoc.
Well the last option is get a wifi router. What internet do you use? I am sure you can have a wifi router for all internet connections. NO matter you have ADSL, Broadband(Ethernet? I don't really know how to call it) even 3g or 4g connection can be wifi-routered! You just need to pick a correct device since NS does not support ad-hoc.

I found connectify and it works great. Thank you!

Under "Password" field in Connectify , you have an option "Internet". There you can select your internet connection to share. Hope that works!
I mean i select the win7 default connection " Local Area Connection", and set it to shared, but the Connectify connection (access point) doesn't have network access, i don't know why, i tried almost 10 times, it just doesn't work.

Update: I think i solved it, i just turn off the firewall of ESET and windows, and it works fine, thank u guys

Internet pass-through

I came from HTC HD2 with Android where I had in the very usefull function Internet Pass-Throught.
With Internet Pass-Through I can share the internet connection of my pc with my phone through usb cable so I have not to use wifi when I have to download a lot of Megabyte.
Is it possible to do something like this with the Galaxy R or with same apps?
But wifi is free, why do you need a PC?

This is a standard function built into our android. You need no app.
Go to settings... networks... tethering... and there select if you want the R to route to usb or wifi.

If you have linux, try this : http://blog.mycila.com/2010/06/reverse-usb-tethering-with-android-22.html
You can try the following for windows, but not sure it works!!
For reverse tethering/pass through, you have to connect your phone using USB and go to network devices and bridge these connections : NIC with you phone.
I use Connectify and a cheap USB wifi dongle to share the Internet connection from PC to phone. Good wifi connection speed is 3-5 megabytes per second. So it's less than 3 minutes to download half of a gig (the size of heaviest Tegra games). I wouldn't call this slow.

How do you do that? My phone is not visible as a network adapter when connected. Should I try USB tethering and doing it?
I always used to use this feature on my Windows mobile through Microsoft proprietary ActiveSync software. I certainly miss that feature on Android devices.
Hopefully we get it on ICS!
