A coworker ordered his and received it yesterday. Im waiting for mine from woot.
He put tnt on it and we are both not impressed. We scanned through all the youtube vids and forums researching this tablet peior. He went with tnt 4.3.2. Hes sending it back and will just wait for an ipad 2 for more money. He was definitely not happy.
Now I'm a little skeptical about it but plan on putting Vegan on mine.
The screen in landscape was bearable but portrait just sucked.
Maybe he did something wrong but it just didn't feel as responsive as an ipad 1 or even the Xoom I messed at BB.
Any tips for when I get might mine tomorrow?

I would recommend trying several modded ROMs here - they all have their pros and cons. VEGAn is a big favorite, for example.
The screen in portrait is a problem, I agree. The screen angles are bad and in portrait the slightest tilt is a major difference - a modded ROM really can't fix that.
not sure of your expectations! !

If you researched this tablet and these forums you would know that the screen is not a "great" screen that fact has been well documented and any Rom you flash is not 100% perfect as they are a constant work in progress. Fact is the roms are lightyears ahead of the stock and are getting better all the time!! If you want the ability to explore and expand??? enjoy!!!! if you want a good performing closed end experience then head on over to Fruit of the loom! !!!
+1 for VEGAn. been using their latest with quite a few widgets on the main screen. snappy response, no noticeable lag. i should point out that i only use the main home screen in landscape mode. in fact, i rarely ever use the tablet in portrait.
Vegan is good but if you want an ipad buy an ipad. If you want a xoom buy a xoom. If you want a very versitile and cheep tablet with top of the line technology running the android platform then the gtablet is perfect. Do us a favor though, when you decide you don't want it sell it here. Many of us would jump at the chance to pick up a second Gtab for what you paid for it.

Yeah... I have a tip, keep an open mind. I myself like tnt lite, actually running 5.0(without problems thx roe!!!!!). Love the speed and the ability and freedom this tab has. Is it perfect? No, has it replaced my laptop for everything, no, but 90% of my casual usage is on my gtab, actually typing this on it right now. The usb host and expandability with an sdm are a big deal to me and no itunes....
Yep, if you don't want to tinker and just want something that "works" out of the box then iPad is a great choice.
A lot of people wanted a tablet for an inexpensive price and something to mess around with an learn from which the gTab excels at.
Hopefully you'll be able to return/resell the unit and find something a little more appropriate for what you expected to buy for $285.
If you want the best then don't pay $300 on WOOT. They don't put products on there because they are top of the line and the best.
You are all right and I agree.
I was looking for something inexpensive but with good hardware. I will keep an open mind about it.
I do favor. Portrait mode because I can type alot faster with the 2 thumbs than with a few fingers in landscape. Galaxy tab was perfect width for in portrait.
I mostly surf web, pay bills online. But was thinking of using that office suite from the gadam.
And if did decide to sell, I'd put it up here for what I paid. Everyone knows what the woot deal was.
It looks like launcher pro is the go to home screen. Any opinions on Go Lauancher as this is what I like on my Evo. Or that new Spb shell.
Thanks all, I will follow the guides here.

Let me clarify one thing. I think you made a good purchase. The Gtab is an exciting little dev device. Lots of flexibility to make user defined changes.

For the screen noting, but you could use it to knock-out an apple fanboy and steal his ipad... but beware, the ipad are tough too...
For keyboard is an using SwiftKey beta for tablets with the split setting for keyboard so you can use your thumbs in landscape

I just received a couple yesterday afternoon. Even with the bad viewing angles and alpha stock OS, I would buy a third.
I can only imagine (hopefully when, not if) an update is applied.
Congratulations viewsonic, my deepest appreciation xda dev/folks and thanks to woot.
I also wanted to return my G tablet ... I really didnt install anything though , I then said what the hell I like the customization of a G tab worst case scenario I can return it and buy a iPad2 ( I bought the G tab at tigerdirect store locally). I installed Vegan 5.1 / clockwork Mod and was sorta not impressed still . Not till I went to MetroPCS to pay my phone bill did I fall in love with the tablet the MetroPCS employee saw it and new abit more than I did he uploaded a few videos for me , showed me a few cool things it does also let me tagg on to the MetroPCS wifi and DL apps he registered my tab into the android market. I would say get someone abit more familiar with a tablet than a noobie ....
Current running
Clockwork Mod
Vegan 5.1.1
Launcher Pro
Vegan tron Theme ( super geeky )
http://www.youtube.com/user/amusedkiddtwh#p/u/3/BVioV-ankqM (dated video)
My g tab looks pretty alright to me (screen issues wise). I did put a matte protector on it though.
I'm having problems adjusting to the screen too but I've only had mine for a few days. The rom that comes stock is complete trash though. I'm not sure why veteran owners are recommending keep it stock because that would totally deteriorate anyone's ability to be happy with this device. After installing vegan it's really a night and day difference and very functional device.
I only wish the screen wasn't so bad. It's especially difficult looking at the beautiful screen on my phone then struggling once I pick this thing up.
I was going to use it to read comics and books but trying out portrait mode, it's a no go. I might end up selling it here as well but I'll play with it for a week or so before deciding. I've tried Vegan, CM7 RC3, and the gAdam roms. They are definitely much better than stock but the screen is a real killer. Though I'll be honest, I did not buy it with high hopes anyway so all the cons weren't at all a surprise to me.

Well, I knew this day would come, as I originally bought the G-Tablet as a hold-me-over until Archos got themselves together on the 101. And now it's here. I'll probably keep them both until my return date comes up on the G-Tablet. But, I can't see returning the Archos device.
Decisions, Decisions!
lol.. wow. Me to, I ordered the second it was up, and did 2 day. So mine should be coming saturday also. Maybe?
did you order Yesterday on Archos.com when the 101 went up for sale? and do 2 day shipping. My tracking number I have already, but it's not in UPS system yet
Did you guys consider you might prefer the g tablet? Remember archos 101 will probably never see gingerbread, and the tegra2 will have honeycomb support. The ui is probably better with the archos...for now. Just have to weigh the pros and cons. However there are a few features the 101 has that are nice, like hdmi and the kickstand.

Please post a comparison after you have both. I'm sure many people are trying to make the same decisions as you. In particular can you post about the viewing angle and how laggy the tablet is?

Yeah! LOL! I Got it yesterday with 2-day shipping . . . So, let me rephrase: I HOPE it gets here Saturday, waiting on the UPS update too.
I'll report back after playing with both. But right now I'm on a usb keyboard/case & a bluetooth mouse and loving this thing!
Crimton, you say that cuz of Archos bad update procedure in the past right. They've mentioned they need to and will improve that. Just like the Archos 101 was released with 2.1 in UK, and getting 2.2 in the next 2 weeks. End of November. They also said they will do future updates on these newer, better tablets. but we will see. Just like Samsung, they have a terrible track record.
I'm not buying the 101 for Gingerbread. I'm buying it for a cheap, low cost tablet to enjoy for the next few months. and in Feb, or March I'll get a 2.3 or 3.0 HTC or Moto tablet that will be feature complete and more of a tablet experience. Since 2.2 really isn't fully there yet. And what do you mean the tegra will have gingerbread support. because LG, and Moto are releasing Tegra 2 phones in Q1. Yea your right. but by then i'll be getting something better I'm sure.

You may be correct. But, I'm not so concerned with Gingerbread right now, just the 2.2 upgrade later this month. There's no telling when the HDMI/hybrid cable will make it stateside from China for the Viewsonic. And, if they haven't fixed all the crap we've had to wade through on this forum to get this thing remotely close to passable by Black Friday sales, Viewsonic will be toast. LOL!
Can you imagine the everyday consumer turning this thing on to see what we saw with the TNT & no Flash Returns with be en masse!!!
Yup, black friday will be a disaster with no market, or flash like the box says. but yea.. Anyways I have a few things i don't like about the G-tablet. and I'm not really banking on Viewsonic fixing software much.
There's some great dev's here though, doing some good things. I'm sure it will be smooth as butter very soon. The media aspects of Archos sold me, the HDMI out, it's coded for some serious media handling and playback. I'll be using it to my TV often also. That and the kickstand, and the entire top isn't glass so it wont break as easy if dropped. No fingerprints on the entire top like the G. and I wont accidentally hit the soft keys all day long.
Anyways. my UPS is showing up now
Anyone know how I can pull the TnT keyboard n use on the Archos 101?

What's your delivery date???
I'd also like to hear a comparison between the two, if you have the time (I had pre-ordered the 101 until the Gtab showed up in my sites). I'm hearing mixed reviews on the LCD and I'm curious if it has the same viewing angle issues.
And if you could do a dump of /system, that would be awesome. I'd love to be able to port their media player over to the GTab.
MY delivery date isn't up yet, but UPS is showing Signature Confirmation Required. I work tomorrow and monday. damnit. I better have someone around to get it.
Yes beet, i will do whatever you need.. I saw a few video's of the 101 and 70 in action, and those video's alone the viewing angles seemed better than the G. My own video shows how bad the angles can be. That is why that video made me think otherwise.. Oh and there's a very good file manager that i think the 101 and 70 has. but I'm not sure. I also read rageinthecage gives temp root on the Archos. So we can temp root, do a titanium backup or what not if needed. but thats unconfirmed.

a combination of the two would be ideal. once we get the official hdmi dock that will eliminate the need for the kickstand and the hdmi port. i just hope that viewsonic is gonna get some updates out to us quick. i know what you're saying about not being worried about gingerbread right now(however i believe i meant honeycomb, tablets will be shipping with it soon http://androidandme.com/2010/11/tab...th-tegra-2-could-arrive-as-early-as-february/) but i also do not want a device that will be outdated soon after i buy it. i would love to see a comparison of the 2 though while you have them both.

right and if everything goes right it should be just around tax return time ;-)
I am interested to know the plug-in comes with 101. I owned 2 of Archos 605 wifi devices. Archos charge for every plug-in. FOr example, DVD Mpeg2 play back, Web browser, Cinema plug-in. All plug-ins cost me almost same as the device. SPecially, the plug-ins are serial number specific, I can't reuse the same plug-in in the other one device I own. I am so curious to see what included in the price. As I saw the plug-in is downloadable but is option. Just my experience.

Agreed. Flash performance, game emulators and Quake already play far better on the G-Tablet.
Out of box though, the 101 is better (obviously).

Archos, ZPad(GTablet) and Toshiba are compared in this forum post. Interesting things regarding their selection of LCD screens and comparison of multitouch capabilities, viewing angles. Interesting read.

I heard today for the first time that the nook Color was able to be rooted and was super happy since I could run Kindle on it.
Then I found xda and read about the G Tablet. At this price point for the hardware involved, I will be stopping after work tomorrow to grab one then head back here for some custom ROM action.
Super excited to see a solid form factor in an Android Tablet. When I first saw the G Tablet in the Sunday paper, I initially shrugged it off as another "not ready for prime time" tablet. While I guess it technically is, this community has taken it places!
Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of information here and some of the most helpful people I know of.
Yes, that's exactly how I felt. I haven't gotten mine yet, and I'm still undecided whether or not I should pull the gun or continue to wait for the Notion Ink... but I've been visiting the section almost daily for news and updates.
After having the archos 101 for awhile i thought it was best I keep it and when I saw the gtablet and horrible reviews I decided to keep it but after reading the forums here I sold my archos 101 and never looked back its so much better and don't really miss the media playback aspect of it as Rockplayer has played everything I have thrown at it still gets good battery life. Now my girlfriend kinda regrets spending so much money on her macbook air and was thinking she should of gotten one as well. ^^

Get ready for a long wait, if you didn't preorder the NI yet. Their initial "stock" is sold out so who knows when their second batch will be available. If u can get this tab for 380 or below, preferable low 300s (which is possible if ur lucky) pull that trigger.
There's a lot of helpful gtab folks here so you know there's support and with VS cooperating that even adds more value to this tablet.
Picked up the tab on my way home this evening.
Man I hate waiting for batteries to charge!

+1, without all of the great work here, and VS support, no way would I have ever considered these, now I have 2.....
Hi, I'm considering a Xoom for my 10 y/o daughter as a christmas present, but I have a couple of questions.
The useage would be movies (from SD), music, and general surfing and android games (angy bird etc). What may be a deal breaker is the ability to use flash intensive web sites.
Currently she has a mac G5 1.6Ghz PowerPC that doesn't play at all nicely with flash intensive web sites, namely Moshimonsters.com and educationcity.com.
Although I'm new to Android, I'm not scared to root and try different roms if required (I've 'hackintoshed' my netbook so am familiar with the sweaty palms while waiting for the final reboot!).
This isn't a replacement for a desktop as the old G5 does just about everything she needs apart from the poor flash playback so if the Xoom would be capable of that it would be a win/win! I'm thinking that a Xoom is cheaper than a new desktop and seems like a great piece of equipment in it's own right for travel/sofa surfing.
So the question is do any of you have youngsters in the family that use the Xoom for moshimonsters.com and don't complain about it being laggy/slow?
Thanks in advance and sorry that the first post is a Q, but I have to start somewhere on my journey into the depths of Android and I have spent sveral days googling but finding no definitive answer!
All the best,
Ian
I tried both websites for you and they worked fine. Educationcity.com was snappier than the moshimonsters.com, but they both loaded fine and flash video downloaded and played fine.
I think she'll enjoy it.
Is there no escaping these bloody things, my 9 y/o and 3 y/o fight over them all the bloody time.... lol

I'm not 100% set on the Xoom but I went to PC World and had a play with a few tablets and the solid feel of the Xoom along with the connectivity options and battery life make it my favourite so far.
The promise of ICS in the future is also appealing.
I'm very willing to hear suggestions for alternatives (in the UK), and my target price is around the £300 mark.

I looked at the 7" A100, its a cut down version of the A500 but with the smaller screen and less storage, however still has the mSD slot so onboard space not so much of an issue. Ended up ordering the A500 instead mainly down to the screen size.
If you want ICS then you might want to have a look at a few other "Android Dev" forums on here, you can see what the popular devices are and that might influence your choices.
Yeah I'd rather get it from a known source but there seems to be some places selling for around the £270 mark, order it on a credit card or whatever card you have thats got some sort of protection on it, just incase, if all comes good then your saving yourself at least £50 which can be spent on screen protectors, sleeves, cases etc

I thought (although I may be completely wrong!), that there would be an official OTA release of ICS for Xoom? This may save me the headache of root, roms & kernels!

There will be an official ICS release for the Xoom. IMHO, it is the best Android tab currently available, all things considered. Also, I have a Tegra2 7" tab and it's sweet and pretty snappy but it's just too small to be really useful. A 10" screen is much better. Put a nice comfortable and protective case on it that can also double as a stand, get one of the charging docks, and your kids are good to go.
for this planned use you may find a cheaper alternative to Xoom... How knows?
Best!

My wife has never embraced anything in the technological realm but when all her girlfriends started getting iPads, she felt like she was missing something and decided to climb on board. I actually encouraged this because I knew that she would become addicted to the usefulness of a tablet in very short time. That would bring an end to the evil looks I get every time I pick up a new toy such as my GTab.
We picked up the New iPad today. I compared it side by side to the iPad 2 and while the screen was better, I did not see a huge improvement in everyday usage. Sure, movies and photos looked a little better but all the other apps displayed about the same to me.
This is our family's first iPad so a lot of this stuff is new to me. On the negetive side, it is clear that the closed environment that defines Apple makes things a lot less fun and can be limiting, On the other hand, I have to admit that this thing is smooth as silk. Even better, it integrates with other Apple devices easily and seamlessly. We both have iPhones so sending free texts and making Facetime video phone call between the phones and the iPad is really easy and fun. I did not realize that you could make free video calls between Apple devices without using any 3G data as long as both devices are hooked up to WIFI. Very cool.
It will be a while before I can provide a real comparison between the New iPad and my GT 10.1 but I do have some first impressions. One thing that Apple has always been able to provide is a useful device that simply works... period. The new iPad is no exception.
On the other hand, some of the apps that I rely on all the time, such as a GPS app that does not require a 3G connection, are not currently available for the iPad. If you have a WIFI only device and cannot use it as a GPS, that is a big negetive.
Also on the negetive side is how the New iPad heats up while in use. This device will absolutely require a case on the back side to dissipate the heat. It is unclear to me at this point if the different form factor will produce a less enjoyable viewing experience for movies and for reading ebooks but the shape is certainly something that sets the iPad apart from the GTab.
More later.
Bob
no SIRI on ipad3 either.
How stupid
Apple does SUCH a good job at building the hardware & providing software updates. But sucks in terms of OPEN-ness.
Samsung cant even get ANYONE ICS. phone or pad. its turning into a giant joke
I've had a few mobile Apple devices before, and they are indeed smooth as silk. I personally wish Android was just as smooth, not because I care, but because that's how average users judge a device. (not really sure why)
In my opinion much more people would choose Android over Apple if the animations were stripped out, and they made their decision purely based on the features given. The only thing I ever liked about Apple was how you could keep your devices in sync, but now that Google Play is out Google gains a win in that category as well. (keep in mind I hate iTunes, it's a POS on Windows)
iPads are pretty entertaining though, I've seen some people pick them up just so they can swipe between homescreens. lol
Umm, maybe post this in an Apple forum?

I think you missed the point. I love my GTab and now have the new iPad to compare it to. There is lots to like about the new iPad but I am keeping my GTab. This is just an educational post.

I had been wondering how it'd compare... Thanks for the thread.
Just curious, how does the 10.1 display fare against the "revolutionary" ipad3 display?
ICS will soon be rolling out for the 10.1 and it will be as smooth as butter~
Currently running ICS on my GS2, it is amazing - as smooth as IOS but alot faster!
Currently on the 10.1v which is running on normal TFT LCD, im thinking of comparing it with the the 10.1 PLS/IPS LCDs... it's a great tab but i just feel deprived of pretty colours...
Thanks for the comparison. Apple makes good products, and they certainly have the marketing down.
I thought this was kind of funny.

I know that the iPad screen is better but the GTab is still pretty darn good. Based on my observations, the GTab screen is probably somewhere between the older and new iPad. Please keep in mind that there is no noticeable difference until you get into viewing photos or high-def movies.
If it were me, I would not have spent the extra money for the New Ipad, choosing instead to pick up a discounted older model if I had to have an iPad. I cannot see much difference between the new one and the iPad 2.With my wife, there is the "Coolness" factor to be considered so that is the direction we went.
Those of us who have gotten used to the freedom that rooted Android tablets offer can sit back and smile knowingly when the iPad fanboys and girls go all giggly about this new version. While I was forking over $540 for my wife's new toy, I asked the very helpful girl at the Apple store if there was an app for the iPad that would turn it into a GPS device that would work when not connected to WIFI or 3G. She said no and then gave me an incredulous look when I showed her the CoPilot app running on my GTab.
Apple products are great but it would be a mistake to make the assumption that they are always better than the competition. If my wife asked me to trade my GTab for her new iPad, I would have to turn her down.
Just one guy's opinion.

I've got a Gtab and got the new iPad on order I'll get it on Tuesday will post my thoughts on it as well later next week.
As much as I adore my Gtab its the lack of quality tablet apps presently on android that let's it down, the openness of Android is far superior than the closed eco system of iOS but jailbreaking it allows some extra useful tweaks, had an iPod touch before and jailbreaking it opened it up a little with customisation of icons and such.
Running aokp on the Gtab and it flies!

If you've got Tesco credit card you can get it for 6 months interest free, done mine that way so I can always flog it in a few months and get most my money back if I get bored of it.
Will have a good play one of them will be sold either the iPad or the Gtab. I've always been a fan of Apple products as well as Android love my SGS2 and will never get an iPhone.

Thanks

Well I have one (in my signature), and there is no official root I know of. However, this device is very similar to Asus transformer infinity and also runs pics, which as an almost universal root tool somewhere (don't remember where to find it). I am hoping someone would be willing to test this on the a2109, as theres many things I wish for root with. As for roms, cwm will need to be made for this and, again, infinity pad may help. But in all honesty, this is so fast that I would be too concerned for roms. Theming would be nice though

I totally agree the speed and smooth, I actually went in to get the ASUS TF300F, but when I held it was just too heavy. There are a few cons such as the camera and the lack of pretty much any accessories. I'd read on another forum that a guy got the Galaxy 8.9 case M-EDGE case for it, so I got the 14.99 one and it fits, though it is pretty tight, and doesn't close completely. It's close enough that I don't worry about anything scratching the screen. Also the way it folds does allow you to use the camera with ease and none of the buttons are covered. I've spent 4 hours searching for a case made specifically for the tablet and not even the MFG has one yet. They do have a picture of a smart cover, but it's nowhere on the site or anywhere else.
I think the people that make non OEM products have bought into the reviews slamming the tablet so much that they didn't decide to make anything for it, which is pretty sad. It's an awesome tablet for people on a budget and doesn't like the garden wall of the KF, lack of additional memory of both the KF and Nexus, and IMHO the specs are awesome. The salesperson did a bench mark test in store and was totally shocked at the rankings it ranked well above all the big name tablets, so at 259 I was definitely sold.
Speaking of the screen, I've viewed it at every angle that I use and there was no problem. I've previously owned the Toshiba Thrive 10.1 and this baby blows it out the water with ease. I kept my KF because trade in went down to 35.00 from 75.00 within a week.
Maybe with people giving positive feedback, more retailers will carry products for it.

I've been posting reviews to every site I can think of, except Amazon. They still haven't gotten their **** together regarding the A2109 specs. Probably a campaign of FUD to sell their own products. Newegg, though, has very few reviews so far...
For those of you not on the Lenovo forums yet, there is now a dev ROM for the A2109. Right now we're at the point of having root, cwm, and a ROM free of bloatware and deodexed -- ready for some theming. Not like I've done any of the work -- by "we" I mean thanks to mcl we now have it.

Well, I took the Lenovo A2109 back to Best Buy today and swapped it for the ASUS TF300T 16GB for a 90.00 difference. They have the same specs under the hood based on a few quick searches on the web. Honestly I hated to do it, because I rather liked the A2109, but the screen kept doing these weird flashes. At first I thought it was something I was doing, but I googled it and it's a known issue. I decided that with the screen already being the only bad thing about the tab and then the flashing I'd just go with something else. Luckily BB had the 16GB ASUS in stock, since it wasn't there the last few times I checked.
There seems to be more support and accessories for the ASUS tab as well. I've not had the chance to test it yet because apparently you have to let it charge a couple of hours before you can use it. (Thought I'd have to make another trip to BB)
I'll update on my blog when I get some play time with it. Just before I took the A2109 back I ran AnTuTu and Vellamo tests on it for S&G and it ranked pretty high, so I want to see if the ASUS tab does the same thing.
I can't post any urls here as a new member, but there is a link to my blog on my profile. Just case anyone is interested.

Spec wise the Nook tab can't touch the ASUS or Lenovo. The only place it would be beat the Lenovo is the screen. Right now the ASUS is running stock JB and still out performing the Lenovo, which I bought for the specs in spite of the screen.

Just picked one of these up tonight -- primarily for the family (non-techie wife & 2nd grade daughter). We've used it for a little over an hour and I'm already noticing random screen flashes. So far they're not anywhere near annoying enough to think about taking it back, but I'm keeping an eye on it. So far very, very pleased!

Excellent! I have noticed the screen glitches myself, and they don't seem to become more frequent or serious over time, so I think what you see is what you will get. I suppose you notice them more when you are concentrating on it. Ordinarily a defect like this would drive me crazy, but for the price I'll overlook it!

Yeah? I'm jealous. Of course, at this point I'd be pre-ordering the Nexus 10 if I were willing to pay more than the $250 I shelled out for this guy. The one thing I would miss, tho, is the convenient size. I really like how easy it is to handle. The 10" on the Gtab were a little much for me. Rationalizations... But now I have an upgrade to look forward to -- after mcl & I get an overclocking kernel running

I've been thinking about the Nexus 7 inch since the 16 GB model dropped to 199 to replace my KF. I still think 7 inches is the sweet spot for a portable tablet, and I'd also love to have the "true" Android experience with out MFG tweaks, but that will be after the New Year and who knows what will be available then. They seem to be introducing the next big thing every week now.
