I'm on the verge of buying a Nexus S but I am now reading about many freezing issues where the phone loses all responsiveness after the backlight goes out on occasion - the only solution being to pull the battery and reboot, only to have it happen again.
This thread shows that some people are returning their phones to Samsung and are seeing a fault diagnosis of 'bad BGA' and a fix of 'PBA replaced'
Original Problem:
Technical Inquiry
Phone Freezing / Locked U
Freeze/Delay Between Menu
Problem found:
BAD BGA COMPONENT
WARRANTY, REPLACE PART
Solution:
Replaced PBA
Passed All Functional Testing
Just how wide a problem is this, is it something that will affect pretty much everyone at some point or are these cases failry isolated?
edit: I am buying from someone who has this phone on contract so I am wondering also if I will be able to get support from Samsung should I run into this problem. Are warranty issues dealt with by Samsung direct or are they passed through the carrier when originally obtained on contract?
Any thoughts?
never experienced any of these problems. you have a 30 day return policy (maybe less now)

Unfortunately not, see my edit above.
Also, it seems users are running into this problem after owning the device for a while, taking them beyond their 28 day / 30 day return
i've had mine since it was first available and never had any problem like this.
I've also never seen this.

same. ive had it maybe like a 1.5 week after release date
It happens to me if i mess around with custom kernels and o/c speed but so far if i use netarchy's stable CFS, it'll be fine. No freezing and having to pull my batt.
It happens if i use hornity or some BFS kernels. Haven't tried Jame Bond yet to test it out.
i think the OP is confusing the SGS issues with SNS
the SNS doesn't have any of those problems listed.

the thread the OP linked is Nexus S
only time that has happened to me is when i overclock to 1.4 ghz and the phone can not handle it
Ok, it's encouraging that this isn't affecting everyone but still a bit worrying.

Wrong - as zephiK has pointed out, the link is to a whole load of people having issued with the Nexus S, NOT the Galaxy S.
I believe the most problems with smartphones are in software, not hardware. And software could/should be patched/updated.
and this is one of the reasons that preventing me from walking into cpw and buying it tomorrow.
I am Having this exact issue with my phone. it is unusable the phone freezes every 20 minutes. Hope Samsung finds a fix for this soon.
I just got my nexus s the other day but I haven't had any freezing either I hope those with the issue get it sorted out though
loading another ROM would help, or perhaps it might be a hardware issue, in which case, take it back for an exchange

Happens in stock rom, and many other custom roms too. So I dun think its the rom problem
oh dear, this is exactly what I'm concerned about. Any pattern as to which are affected by this, ie just slcd or just samoled? Only a thought.
I shall soon receive my second nexus s and I really don't want to have this problem!
I'm using the i9023 if that info helps.
Yes thanks but it's not what I wanted to hear as the chances are that this is the one I will receive.
I've heard of people reporting successfully fixing this with a full reflash, others say it's a hardware issue.
Keep us posted.

We are all excited to use the new G2X but it seems some of us ara having several issues with this phone.
I am creating this poll so we get a real world number on how many people are having issues so we can find out whether this is related to first batch of hardware or mere software issues.
Please pick your issue and vote...thanks.!!
If you have further comments, please post as well.
I've had mine since saturday around 11am eastern, got saturday delivery, one of the lucky few and have not noticed anything wrong with it. No bleed or reboots.
Only thing odd is when powering on the home screen will show about .1 second and then the lock screen but I think that happens on the O2x too..sorry to hear/see others having issues though.
I've tried to find fault with mine and just can't. I put a black wallpaper on it looked hard for the bleed nothing and the rebooting, i just haven't had any!
No issues here either, its working great for me

I think mine is OK so far.
Mine has the issue where it won't unlock because the screen won't turn on
Great so far.. Only had it for 2 hours though.... Voted no issues... Keeping stock launcher only for a few days, just cause its so smooth....
Phones absolutely great, as long as it don't reboot I'm golden... Ill keep posted on any issues... Gps is fantastic vs my vibrant...
I either (hopefully) have a dud phone or there's something whacky software wise on my phone. I have a replacement coming in a few days so I'll see if that one still has the same issue or not.
I mentioned this on another thread, but I'll say it again here....I think you can multiply the "no issues" number by about 10 for 2 reasons:
1. People with no issues don't commonly open up "issues" threads.
2. People are reluctant to fill out a poll saying the have no issues because they realize they may have an issue later.
Heck, theres two people already above me that say they have no issues yet, but haven't entered it on the poll.
Side notes: Really, I would think almost everyone should have the reboot issue. It is a very very known issues that LG has already admitted to and started sending OTA fixes for. Also, "GPS issues" is very relative as it's being compared to however you previous phone or other GPS devices performed. Unless it's really malfunctioning (turning off for no reason or refusing to turn on) I wouldn't call it an "issue".

Anybody with NO issues running LauncherPro or ADW EX or some other launcher except the stock? I'm running out of ideas - now trying stock launcher and not LauncherPro. Have an exchange unit coming so if that one has issues there's a good chance it's software and not hardware - or I have horrible luck!
Got off the phone - replacement phone will be here tomorrow!
I've had the phone for 4 hours and I have had to pull the battery out twice to get it to turn back on, and I've had two instances where it just rebooted lol, Ive barely done anything with it but charge it.

Interesting. Well I'm on stock launcher now so here's hoping that's all it was. Would be too easy though so I doubt it
i have my phone sense yesturday... NEVER rebooted or locked once
i noticed some decent bleeding in the bottom corner AFTER the posts...
i love the phone thats my only problem
i have rooted my phone... and froze alot of the apps that tmobile put on it...
cant wait for some beastly kernel to walk into my path.... till then im gonna give it 4./5 (because of the bleeding)
Ton of bleeding at the top.. T-Mobile rep wouldn't let me exchange it. It was not deemed defective by her standards. I'm pissed. It also has a noticeable red tint.
No issues here so far, im stuck at work so I cant look into it at the moment.

hello xda members
i have install froyo fx06 bundle here
my problem is sometimes the phone freeze. i read the entire post to find the solution to fixed that. then i found the only solution is to install init at here . can someone make a tutorial how to install that. i mean the step by step tutorial.
Have you any idea as to how to use ADB or terminal? If you do, then you are pretty much done, with the exception of executing those commands in that post. If not, you'll have to wait till it gets committed like the rest of us Or just wait till someone that does know, comes across your thread! That thread is mainly there for people who know how to do this already.

Some say it isn't that difficult while others have a difficult time trying to understand English, much less speak/type it(like myself ). If you feel up to it, you can start by reading HERE. Unless someone else has this simplified elsewhere. If that were the case and I knew of it, I woldn't be pointing you in this direction.

Honestly, I've never had any real problems with FroYo freezing on boot. Just the SoD issue due to partial panel collapse. Supposedly, that (modified rootfs) only fixes the freezing on boot issue. Unfortunately, there is no way I can reproduce the issue you are experiencing on my end to help troubleshoot. Some blame it on the operator/service provider and others think it's the build itself. As for me, well I'm not sure what to think because it doesn't seem to affect me much. Have you tried Gingerbread yet? Might be something to play around with till the issue gets fixed.

about gingerbread. i have read that gingerbread is android 2.3 and froyo is 2.2 right? but why many people like to use froyo then gingerbread? if gingerbread have any problem. sorry if i asking to many question.
I'm not 100% on this but I think it has something to do with the fact that the porting is still in alpha phase for our devices. If anything, this can be looked at as good or bad. Good, that we have gotten this far and it seems our devices are pretty much stable. Bad, that this might be as good as it gets for a while. You have to weight the options of a faster port(in terms of stability) but less complete(in terms of functionality) or a more complete port but not quite as fast. I remember when we first got FroYo, it seemed like a complete mess. It took till the third release (FRX03) for stability to take place(noticable) because the devs were trying to figure out what caused the instability. When it's all said and done, the end user experience is all that most are looking for. When this is the case, it's difficult to say what should be done. Wait till it becomes more stable or try to come up with work arounds. Troubleshooting can get you so far until you require more understanding of what affects what. Hopefully, I have bored you out of your mind and that this makes things clearer as to what you can do to help!
thank you for your kind to help me. i have change to gingerbread but it have same problem like froyo. then i tried to hard reset then reinstall froyo and change the kernel. now it working great without problem except camera not working . maybe because i change the kernel htc-msm-linux-20110214_200559-package.tar . but it's ok for me. i will wait till new release.
You must have the similar issues some others have (on foreign carriers/other than USA based) Now, I'm not saying this is the problem just that others that have a similar issue, are on those carriers. There have been updated kernel packages that include the camera fix but I would suggest a little more reading into what you need to do, to ensure that you aren't causing the issue you are experiencing now.
Had a problem with very low sound volume on the headphones, so I replaced the phone within the 30 days... google backup restored all my apps automagically...
Observation....
On my old phone I always had a 4-6+ second delay when accessing the 4g/wifi network (browser, maps, etc...) and I thought this was just normal...
Well it's not normal... The new phone has less than a second when connecting. Opening apps that connect to the internet just come striaght up without delay...
I've seen issues like this when the initial DNS entry was bad, but Im not sure if this was the problem here...
Not sure why the old phone had the initial connection problem, but this replaced phone ROCKS!
I'm having the same issue, except my delay seems like more than a minute. I guess I should exchange the phone as it has only been 6 days. My phone was manufactured on 4/11, so I guess it's part of the first batch problem phones.

The g2x is the new phone standard IMHO, and anything less is going to be returned from this point on.

Exchanging the phone today. This one did not have major screen bleeding or reboots... hopefully the next one is the same.
I've had the G2X since release. It was my first smartphone, and so maybe I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. (I probably still don't have a real idea.) I've had the freezing/rebooting problems since about 2 weeks in. There are times it just won't "wake up" or just automatically reboots itself. I'm way outside buyer's remorse, obviously, so what kind of options to I have? Can I still get the phone replaced by T-Mo, to hopefully get one that has less reboot issues?
In case you were wondering, I have modded the phone to see if other ROMs would fix the issue, but they have not. It seems like the freezing issue will be gone for a short time after wiping and flashing a new ROM, but then a couple of weeks later it's back to how it was. Any advice? Maybe try to trade it out on CL or something?

You didn't mention if you did the GB upgrade and the new baseband. If you are really tired of it just send it to me in Thailand free. I can use another phone for testing rom builds.
Hah, I did do the official GB upgrade before I started putting ROMs on it. I was basically hoping that would fix my issues, but it didn't, so then I started in on ROMs. Currently running the latest Weapon, which I like, but the reboots/freezes are wearing on me. I'll try to call T-Mo.

The phone is defective. Get it swapped out under your warranty. Mine has only rebooted and sod once the entire time I have owned it. Occasional reboots and sod are normal for Android (usually a bogus app running havoc on the system). If you have frequent problems you have something wrong with your device. If you have tried running stock without installing programs and still have problem you definitely need to do a warranty replacement pronto. When you get your new one run it a few days without adding any apps to make sure it is okay. Then add apps slowly so if one starts causing problems you can pinpoint down easier and zap it off your phone. When the G2X is running correctly, it is one of the best Android devices on the market today.
Hi,
I would like to replace my HTC One M8 with a second hand OPO.
I keep reading about problems with this device, mainly the yellow screen issue.
If I am to buy this device, I would like to make sure it isn't suffering from these issues.
How can I try to reproduce the yellow screen issue? Can I check if the device is suffering from it in a 10 min overview?
Also, what else would you have me check for before I can commit?
Thanks in advance for your quick responses.
D.
You will notice if it has the yellow tint in 30 seconds. Mine has considerably diminished over the course of a month. Aside from it I find nothing to fault in this device.
Mine disappeared with in a few days of use. And i have htc one m8 Also and never touched it since I got a oneplus one so yes its worth the upgrade
Thank you both.
So you don't experience any of the problems on this forum?

The yellow band does not go away, it comes and goes in varying degrees. I'm not sure what makes it change, I'm thinking temperature. Anyway, I should know as I've bought 4 four OPO's so far I still have my original from mid July that I gave to my bro, sold one for profit, returned a faulty one, and currently have a new one for myself from mid August. The one from July still has the yellow band nothing's changed, but the one from August is almost unnoticeable and is the best one so far. You never know what you're gonna get from OnePlus, their quality control is atrocious, but you have options. If you don't like it, you can sell it for a small profit, or you can compromise and keep it since it's still pretty damn good for $350.
I had the yellow thing but its gone lol
I'm in the same boat as the OP, I have an M8 Dev Edition converted to GPe.
The more I see the endless customizations the opo has to offer, the more I want one.
It is the number of unique problems that I am concerned about. I realize this is a troubleshooting forum, but it feels like there's a new bug for every phone they sold ?
I came from an iPhone 5s to an Xperia Z2 to the OPO and its fantastic, what you read regarding problems are just a minute % of the people who owns the device that are experiencing problems, this is true for EVERY single device. The majority however are probably not experiencing any issues are are oblivious of any issues. The issues i had was the multi-touch issue and battery drain issue which was resolved with firmware 33R, i also have the yellow band at the bottom of the screen but if i hadn't read about it i wouldn't have noticed it that's how inconspicuous it is.
