Kickstands have protective coating - Thunderbolt General

Anyone else notice this? Mines coming off from being in and out of my pocket so much
Its disappointing to see the end of the kickstand look like it has paint peeling off
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App

I peeled it off the second I unboxed it...

I meant it has a paint on the kickstands
If u look at it, it has a greyish tint to it and at the end of my kickstands this paint is peeling off so its a bright silver color

Just noticed this on mine... Thanks :/ Im starting to think this device is not so good after all.

I'm just hoping that once it peels of completely the "with Google" is still there

I just looked after reading this and mine is peeling too.

Mines not peeling yet, I will stop using it now though for sure.
I read on AC that someone was successful exchanging their TB for this problem. So you might want to get on that before it becomes more widespread.

i don't see any paint peeling off of mine, it seems like its just brushed aluminum, nothing to indicate that it has any kind of paint on it. maybe it's a clear coat over the metal?

No paint peeling here.. but I do have some scuffing.. I need a case.
I will probably end up plasti-dipping the kickstand lol....

I actually have a full body shield so mine is ok

I noticed mine peeling a couple of days ago, not a good start

I just taped mine up as a preventive measure. Looks like **** but whatever at least I can use it this way.

Touch-up paint

Anybody know what type of touch-up paint to use for the metal housing on the Thunderbolt?
Unfortunately its not metal, its plastic, and it breaks very easy..... Not much help on the post sorry... I just needed to vent... 2 day old Tbolt fell from lap to floor and broke the corner... If it had been metal it would have just brushed it off like it was nothing. poopoohead plastic...
Yeah I can second that its not metal. I have paint chipping at the top corner and above the kickstand. I would strip the whole thing if I could....

Bummer. Could still try some touch-up paint though. I am kind of anal retentive about my phones.
Prob the best match you'll find is a car touch up pen from autozone etc....

Yeah, some if the finish is also chipping off of my kickstand. It's pretty annoying, but considering that I pocket carry it with no case I can't really complain
Anything you put on will come off anyways, I say leave it go, gives the phone character

Is anyone not using a screen protector? I have one but am itching to take it off. Just seeing what people think.

I never used a screen protector on my fascinate, banged it up a lot and there were only minor dings in the plastic back cover...
Charge is the same, its taken a beating and I've only gotten one little scratch on the screen, but I got that at the beach... sand is notorious for being corrosive/scratchy to phones so I couldn't really help it no matter where I put it it was bound to happen
blazing through on my 4G Droid Charge
The charge has Gorilla Glass. You have to try to scratch it. But, I have one on mine. However, the BACK of the phone is a scratch magnet.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyFroyo 1.9.1
I scratched my Fascinate with a box cutter.... Otherwise nothing to date has been able to scratch it or my Charge because of Gorilla Glass.
basically EVERYWHERE BUT the screen is easily prone to scratching.. so ur protecting the wrong part lol
I was using the verizon screen protecter and i do not recommend it to anyone. It makes everything kinda blurry and on white screens you really notice a rainbow effect going on.

Also, does the charge actually have gorilla glass? I've read about this at a couple other places and they all say different things. Is there any proof?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
All the sources I can find say it is Gorilla Glass.
I use a Skinomi Techskin full body cover. I love it.
I personally always use a screen protector. I don't care about little scratches myself but in 2 years when I get a new phone I'm going to sell this one and it's a huge plus if this thing has no scratches. Plus, if you get a good protector you'll never notice it's even there.
Samsung charge has Super Amoled Plus screen. It's scratch resistant. Putting on a screen protector completely negates all the good things about this screen. For example with a screen protector the ability to see the screen under sun light (yes. Super Amoled Plus Screen makes it easier to see the screen under sun light) is negated.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I can honestly say that my screen protector does not affect the performance of my screen at all. It still trumps my friend's iphone4's retina displays all day every day.
I have had this on my last 3 phones and swear by it. It covers the whole screen and I don't even know it is there.
I had it on my fascinate for 8 months and that is almost scratch resistant itself. had a few minor marks on the protector from a screw in my pocket.

And it is crystal clear.
I just read the title of the thread and laughed.

Nope.... It's glass, so no real way to polish them out.
Ok well just wait until the price goes down for screen then.

If you put on a screen protector I recommend ghost armor or zagg you wont even see the scratches...worked on my dell streak 5 with pretty deep ones like a charm.

Do some research on the installation of fiber optic connectors. It is glass. You have to manually (on the old style epoxy type connectors) sand down the glass with different grit sandpapers. I nabbed some out of a fiber kit from a previous employer and used it on an old school crt monitor. Worked like a champ.
There's a three step sanding process. look it up and see what grit paper you would need. It's def worth a try.
I was just looking at this thread for a device that also has Gorilla Glass:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821129
Seems a bit extreme--especially if your scratches are minor, but looks like it works.
I saw someone else post somewhere that they used 3M Perfect-It III-Trizact* machine glaze, which is made of a similar material as Gorilla Glass. But that stuff is expensive and you'd still be doing a lot of sanding/buffing.

You where only trying to help, not being naive. I don't know if I can explain this correct but if if you feel the surface of a lemon or an orange it has a weird sort of greasy feeling. That is the case with almost all wet install screen protectors like zagg and body guardz. Although i believe body guards has dry install ones so if you are talking about that one, then I havent tried it yet.

It's not so much the feel of the screen I'm talking about, the screen protectors I've used mess up the screen's picture quality adding this bumpy look (similar to an orange).
It's really noticable on the G2x because of it's IPS display (i think).

I just bought one for my G2x, it's by XO Skins.
I can't even really tell its there at first glance. I mean, obviously I know though.
http://xoskins.com/ Search for G2x and you'll see full body and just screen.
I got the just screen one and it goes edge to edge. It does have a bit of a rubbery feel, but it doesn't bother me too much since it's not my daily driver anymore. :x
Just swiping you don't really feel it, but if you slow down, you can. I heard it goes away after a few weeks though.
EDIT: An important note is that this is a wet-apply protector, so you'll have to give it a bit before you go back into using the phone.
EDIT2: Here's some pics.
like stated above the one I use is a wet apply method and it is a ZAGG. it has a slight rubbery feel but you get used to it and it doesn't have the orange peel you are trying to avoid. plus it comes with a no questions asked lifetime warranty so if I take it off or mess it up they send me a new one free of charge
stay away from the Skinomi DryTech ones, I took mine off after a week because of the lousy feel-- plus some of the air bubbles never went away.

Skinomi TechSkin on the other hand is a different story. I don't care for the super-rubbery feel of some screen protectors either. TechSkin, in my opinion, is better. I think it may have to do with the thickness. The "orange peel" is minimal compared to say BODYGUARDZ (which I have used). I don't know, there's just something different. It seems clearer, feels more like a dry applied protector. That said, It is a wet-apply screen protector, and does have some of those undesirable qualities. It's quality though puts it somewhere in the middle of those two types, and I really like it.
The orange peel effect can be due to low quality screen protectors or a bad application. I've had good luck with Zagg (but I hated the feel, so I returned it), Ghost Armor, and PhantomSkinz. Ghost and Phantom both feel great, but Ghost is a bit easier to apply. Had a few resistant bubbles near the edge of the PhantomSkinz

I have been bothered by those damn scratches too! Then I saw a comment above about removing the plastic... I thought I had gotten all the packaging off but if you look closeley you will see the plastic scuffed ring in my photo. Glad I have that off now!!!
I'm thinking that plastic cover is the only thing keeping the lens off the surface when laying the phone down on anything "screen up".
It's a design flaw I suppose.
But I wouldn't take it off unless you have a case for your phone... Otherwise what's gonna keep the lens from physically touching the surface of the desktop or table when you lay your phone down screen up?

How did you get the sticker off? I thought a sticker was there but some scratching seemed to fail and made me think I was wrong. Any special techniques used to remove it?
Anyone experience any lens scratching after removing the sticker and not having a case?
Well we know everyones protective cover gets all scratched up, mine included.
When you lay the camera down on its back the whole weight of the camera rest on the lens kind of a kind of a crappy set up if you ask me
Its only safe to assume the lens would get scratched also

Awesome! I'll give this a try. Thank you so much for your tip! Did you find that the camera lens touches the surface/gets scratched when you place the phone face up?
It's unfortunate the camera lens is designed to stick out past the backing slightly. It leads to scratches.
I think it's a result of thickness of the camera unit.
A nice fix with added benefit would be an OEM extended battery with battery cover to allow the lens to be inset from the backing.
