[Q] flashed CM7 RC2 and no service after awhile? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm not sure where to post this or what details I need to provide..
Basically I flashed CM7 RC2, and after few hours of usage, my phone receives no service/signal at all (with the grey cross icon on status bar).
I can't do a manual search for my network, reboots won't work, taking out battery and SIM card won't work either.
I flashed back to my nandroid and back to RC2 a 2nd time and the same thing happened. Tried different kernel and same thing happened. and during the "no service" state, a process called something like "android.phone" process keeps force closing non-stop every few secs.
any idea/advice what might have gone wrong? any way I can troubleshoot it?
P.S. I was using Stock 2.3.3 rooted with netarchy CFS 1.2.5 before flashing CM7

Hi. I narrowed down the problem. My phone receives no signal when I use the toggle 2g/3g button, then the android.phone process force closes continuously.

I had the exact same problem 2 day ago with RC2. The problems started after running fix permissions. I discovered that if I go into airplane mode, the force closes stop. But as soon as I tried to go back to cellular service, the fc's came right back.
I was able to fix the problem by putting it in airplane mode, wipe data/cache, and then flashing cm7 RC2 again right on top of the existing install.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

currently the 2g/3g notification toggle doesnt work for the nexus s cm7 all the way to RC4.
why are you still using RC2 when RC4 is already out?
update: nvm, i saw your original post was 2 days ago

hi thanks for replying.. I got another qns though - what's the usual procedure for changing from old RC to new RC? I just changed to RC3 and RC4 is released, and I did a full wipe and restored using titanium backup.
Can I not wipe data? just cache, dalvik cache? and do I use fix permissions before or after the flash?

CM7 Loss of 2G and 3G internet.

I flashed to CM7 awhile ago and it had been running great on my phone. Within the lass day it started having problems connecting to the internet. Now, when I updated to the 7/21 I lost internet completely. Since I thought it could be a roaming type of issue I flashed back to EE19 where data worked fine. I did ADW DEBUG anyways hoping it would bring back data in CM7. I can't figure out how to get data back with CM7 even after multiple data-wipes and reflashes. Does any one have any ideas? I can always go back to 2.2, I'm just hoping that I could keep using 2.3.4.
Try flashing back to the build before 7/21 (whatever date it is).
Tried a clean wipe and went to 7/21. Boot looped after installing gapps. Wiped clean and went to previous Cm7 and it works fine. My phone must not like something about the 7/21 version.

[Q] Help with Bluetooth problem using ICBINB KJ3

Hello first of all I love the ICBINB Roms!
I had the ICBINB KH2 (I believe it was) it was very stable without any problems.
I went and flashed ICBINB KJ3 yesterday and it seems great and runs smooth but I am having one issue.
My bluetooth will not turn on. I click it and nothing happens.
I have tried doing a factory wipe and reflashing (and wiping everything including caches)
I have also tried going back into recovery and wiping caches and fixing permissions
Is there something that I am missing.
I love this rom but I need my bluetooth. Thanks so much for your help and all the work that you all do to make these great roms to make our phones run better!
Try to activate Bluetooth from settings menu or power control widget. If you already tried that then i'm sorry i've got nothing else
Sent from my SGS4G using xda forum app
The settings menu just says turning on for about 90 seconds then the screen brightens for a second.
The power widget brings up scan for devices but other than that it won't do anything.
Thanks for your help!
redownload the rom. and see if it persists. if it does, try to pull the bluetooth apk from another rom and see replace the one you have.
1st fix permission in recovery, 2nd factory reset, should fix most problems.
Try and turn on blue tooth as soon as the phone boots up. I know it fixed it for icinb 2.3.4 (forgot wat modem was :/)

Data and text issues on all roms after ICS!

After flashing hellfire ICS I wasnt able to recieve any texts. I then flashed Hellfire cm7 and still same issue, also tried eaglesblood. I then tried getril, it wasnt matching but updating it didnt do anything. Now I just flashed 2.3.3 and text is working but I have no data. With every flash I wiped everything and used g2x scrubber. Also I tried using different APN...What can I do to fix this?
So, you reverted to a non 4.0.3 rom and the issue still persist, like a GB 2.3.7 rom?

yea
Yea, last night I flashed a eaglesblood over 2.3.3, this time manualy wiping and not using scrubber..and it worked, I was able to use data and recieve texts. But now it just stopped working and I am unable to recieve texts again. I have fixed permissions, cleared caches, and tried all the RIL in getril. Why would it randomly stop working??? this is so annoying
..BTW i restored only a few apps with titanium and did not restore any of the data, just apps.

Maybe try flashing a new baseband and then going into your apn list and restoring default apns.
Could possibly be a sim card problem or sim card reader hardware issue... dont wanna jump to the worst possible scenario tho..
I have the jul 15 baseband, isnt that the latest? Idk if it would be hardware since everything was good before I flashed ics .
When you flash, are you wiping data, cache, dalvik cache, and system before flashing?
Yea, I wipe data, cache, dalvik, then format system, then flash rom which is on root of sd card.
Is there anything else I can delete/format when installing a rom? What data is being retained that I have this issue with every rom?
update: Just flashed bionix 2.3.3 rom with stock kernel and everything is working, its like it works only when it wants to..ill try a cm7 rom again later.
you aren't the first to report the same exact thing... I'm waiting for jboxer or another dev to say something... it might have something to do with T-Mobile or your SIM... have you tried entering your number manually... have you tried without data connected or on wifi?
Didn't hear the mention of g2x scrubber always a good thing...

Something I would do would be to...
Download Rom/Gapps
Unzip to make sure it's complete and uncorrupted DL
CWM Recovery
Wipe Data/Cache/System/Davlik/BattStats
G2xScrubber (In case)
Install Rom
Install Gapps
Wipe Cache/Davlik/BattStats
Fix Permissions
Boot let it sit quick..
Hard Reboot (Power + Volume Up)
Edit: For some ICS Roms sometimes you have to enable data or toggle it on/off for it to work.
ok

[ROM] SKYICS 4.2E-7 (ULCE2) 5/24/12: N00b Questions

I'm fairly new to ROMs (this is my second). I have followed the instructions and successfully installed the ROM, modem, and update.
2 questions:
1) Wifi does not work (will not turn on). I had wifi problems on my last ROM. I have reinstalled this ROM numerous times today thinking something must have failed since wifi does not work. This seems to be unique to me since I can't find anything in the thread regarding wifi problems. Any suggestions?
I've gone so far as to use darkside superwipe as suggested in a different thread. Still can't get wifi to turn on (just sits with "Turning Wi-Fi on..." message on screen). Never errors out, just stays like that.
2) ROM Manager: Fix permissions fails. I get the following error when I select fix permissions: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" Any suggestions?
Thanks so much for the help!
You should post your question in the ROM thread. The developer (seanscreamz) or one of the other testers will see it and be able to address your problem and help you out.
I can't post in the Dev section yet. 6 more posts and I will ask there.
starting over...
Ok, I figured I might as well make sure that my wifi woes are not a hardware issue. I've reverted back to stock Skyrocket OS to make sure wifi is available and working in stock form.
Following this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348, I reverted to stock and I can confirm that wifi works in stock form.
I've also reformatted my sd card in case there is any chance a corruption on it would cause my problems.
Now going to reinstall SkyICS...

Are you on CWM touch?
have you went into the busybox app and clicked install?
wifi broken again
I have followed these instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 to regain root. After getting root, I installed ROM Manager and selected "Fix Permissions". On reboot, I lost the ability to connect via wifi.
Did I miss a step?
Thanks again for holding a n00b's hand!

You have to install busy box

john: I'm sure you mean well, but I don't know what your intent was with your posted link.
crazyD: digging your avatar. I'm currently trying to decide between a G26 and XD9sc...
btw, installed and ran busybox. not sure what it did for me. I also updated ROM manager to latest. Accidentally initiated a backup from ROM manager. Will see if wifi is back after that has completed.
Edit: wifi still errors, won't connect. I'm not clear what steps I may have missed or screwed up between being stock to rooted. I will revert back to stock again and try again...
Are you running juice defender? Its giving me problems with my wifi connection!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I'm not running Juice Defender. At this point, I'm trying to revert back to stock form again with working wifi.
Edit: ok, reverted back to stock by doing the following
1) reboot into CWM recovery
2) factory reset x3
3) clear cache x3
4) format system x3
5) clear dalvik x3
6) format emmc x3
7) restart and pull battery
8) boot into download mode
9) push stock tar (k0kane) via Odin3 v1.85
I now have wifi again!
So now I get to try to get back to SU and CWM without losing wifi...wish me luck.
still have wifi!
OK, rooted and CWM installed. I still have wifi, which is good. I'm afraid to select 'Fix Permissions' for fear that will break my wifi.
I'm going to install Sky ICS now and see what happens.
sky ics and wifi!
OK, It took a few attempts, but I now have SKY ICS installed and wifi is still working.
I've installed the base ROM and the modem...not the updated yet. My download speeds are terrible, but at least I have wifi. I think the data speeds get better on the update.
Sean's instructions say to let the phone "cache and settle". I have no idea what that means...so will try to wait 10 minutes or so before installing the update.

My uneducated guess with the data speeds is the modem for UCLE2. I haven't had the chance to go to LTE on SKYICS yet, but data is definitely slower on "4g" networks.

quick update
Here is a quick update:
I spent some time redownloading all my apps and in general setting up the phone. I then ran the SKY-ICS update. Everything seemed to be working great.
As an added bonus, the email app in SKY-ICS syncs with my employer's exchange server! Which is so awesome. The stock ROM, and the last gingerbread ROM I had on the Skyrocket would not connect to our exchange server. I was very pleasantly surprised by that functionality.
I then lost wifi again. Wifi seems to be unpredictable and I'm not sure if it is hardware or software related. I again have wifi this morning, but didn't for the last two days. Also, my phone won't restart, it appears to get stuck in a powerdown state. The haptic buttons stay lit, but the screen is blank. I have to pull the battery to get it to restart.
But overall, I'm very happy with the performance and functionality of SKY-ICS. I will do some digging on the restart problem.

[Q] I need help.

I'm not a dev, but it's obvious to me something is wrong.
I re-flashed the eaglesblood ICS rom using clockworkmod recovery v.5.8.1.3 (touch version)
everything seemed okay.
until i started putting apps back on my phone with app backup and restore.
I was getting "process syystem has stopped responding" all over the place.
Then the phone crashed.
it keeps booting, only three apps seem to be running that show themselves in the taskbar, Groove IP, GV SMS integration, and Battery Notifier (Big Text)
It sits there, one one of the home screens, LW animating slowly as it will.. then the phone reboots for no reason.
I installed 4 or 5 different logcat apps but i can't make heads or tails of them
and adb logcat > logcat.txt just spits out this :
/sbin/sh: exec: line 1: logcat: not found
dmesg spits out the log i'm attaching.
Can anyone help me? If i can save the log from one of the logcat apps, will that help?
I'd rather not have to reflash and re-install apps AGAIN.
Where you flashing EB 4.0.4 from gingerbread ?
In any case a full wipe and reflash of the ROMs would work fine. Then reflash the appropriate gapps, But when restoring the apps using TB just restore at apps and not their data. They sometimes don't play well.
I had a similar issue when I tried flashing the 4.2 gapps on 4.1.2 keyboard would crash everytime and any app that uses even one of the google services would crash right away.
I cleared dalvic cache did a dirty flash over my existing 4.1.2 , reflashed the 4.1.2 gapps then I fixed permissions and in was good to go.

so a dirty reflash and fix permissions might help?
Funny enough, after posting that, and hitting reboot on CWM recovery.. the phone came up with the cord plugged in, and seems to be stable for now.
Uhm. i was flashing from.... heck if i know, i've tried a bunch of roms.
the phone INITIALLY was 2.3.4
back when i started.. months ago.

grrrrrrrrrr. i'm back at the crashing behavior
I see "equalizer activated " then the phone gets stuck... that same "equalizer activated" thing came up when i added speakerboost... wonder if it's the cause..

*grumble* damn sun-downer phone. SO all night it was crashing.. So i finally got irritated when i went to bed, yanked the battery out and plopped it on my night-stand by my fan.
This morning i put the battery in, turn it on, and it seems stable.
What the heck?!
logs.
So... between all the log apps i've played with i have a bunch of logs.. if anyone could look them over and tell me if they see a problem, i'd appreciate it.
Re-download Rom+Gapps
Place on SD card
Re-nvflash cwm recovery 5.0.2.0
Wipe data/cache/davlk/battstats/format system
Install rom+gapps
Wipe cache/davlk/battstats
Fix permissions
Reboot
Using touch is sometimes buggy, 5.0.2.0 is most stable. Restoring apps/data is sometimes a messes things up.
