no gps icon in status bar - HTC Inspire 4G

i don't have gps icon in the status bar, and gps can't get any locking at all. it worked once before i flashed a new rom a few days ago, now it just doesn't seem to work anymore. is the gps module broken? i tried reflashing the radios and different roms, nothing worked.

Worked for others. Not sure why it wouldn't work for you. Try again. Downloaded file might be corrupt. Download the file again.

I had something similar to you but I did see the flashing GPS icon, but it just wouldn't lock. Like in GPS test app it would not see any satellites. It didn't matter what ROM i was on, or even if I tried to flash a backup where the gps worked, it wouldn't change anything. I tried the before mentioned re flashing the radio and it didn't find it on my sd just like you, so what I did was redid step 5 in the hack kit. This essentially does the same thing that you were trying to do with the PCIMG.zip file. Give it a shot it should be easy if you rooted with the hack kit, just plug your phone in with debugging enabled, set as charge only, change the directory (cd) to wherever you saved the hack kit, and then run the sh hackerize-ace.sh setup-radio, then run the sh hackerize-ace install-radio(for me because I was on a mac I had to use the sh hackerize-ace.sh install radio), then follow the instructions in HBOOT. It worked for me when nothing else would.

I have been having this exact problem, no matter what ROM I use GPS will not see any satellites. I have tried everything, including redoing step 5 of the hack kit. Is going back to factory settings my last resort? I would really rather not have to do that, but I will if it's the only thing that will fix GPS.

I thought my gps was back to normal but today on the road it was hard to get a lock again. It would see like 3-5 satellites, but wouldn't obtain the lock. I don't know what to do now, after re flashing the radio from the hack kit, I have a feeling one of the roms is breaking the gps for some of us. My guess is that it is changing something in the gps module which cannot be fixed easily. Will be looking forward to a real fix for this as gps is something I really need.

That's probably what's happening, this seems to be happening others other than me, hopefully the problem will be solved at some point.

Update: after a few days my gps seems back to normal, I can even get a lock to 30m inside. Hopefully it stays this way. The best answer for me is redoing step 5 of the hack kit. And for me it was getting a weak signal at first but after a few days it seems to have stabilized.

Gps not working...anyone have a fix

I'm been running the stock rooted Rom for about a day now my gps doesn't work. I get no icon in the status bar either. I wiped everything and reflashed the Rom and still no gps icon or gps status.
Do anyone know of a fix for this?

Have you tried downloading GPS Test? Download that software and see if you are getting a GPS lock on some satellites. If you are, then I am guessing you are having problems with Google Maps, if so, uninstall Google maps then reinstall it from the market. For whatever reason that application seems to get corrupted during the rooting process for a lot of people (including me) and stops working. Once I did this I had everything working again, and I can lay the phone in my cup holder in the car and it tracks me perfectly.
Loading Radio 26.05.05.27_M3 - (Orange UK 1.84.61.2) did the trick for me.
Thanks but I got it working it again. I used a fix that's for the Evo that I remembered that was posted a while back. Which was to go into recovery, wipe everything, flash another rom (I used Core Droid), get a GPS lock, go back into recovery, rewipe again and reflash the rom that had the gps issues. After logging back into everything, I opened maps and immediately got a lock. And the icon was displayed in my taskbar.

For future reference, all I needed to do to get it working again was repeat step 5 of the hack kit.

Cool...I'll check that out too.

Repeating step 5 worked for me too. Easy fix, annoying when I found out I managed to mess up my GPS earlier today when showing the phone to some friends.

GPS isn't functioning

I realize there are a plethora of GPS related threads, I searched and skimmed through what I could without finding an answer.
I am running Android Rev 1.1.5 rom, and have no GPS lock when using navigation, or trying to get directions of any kind. When using maps, it does lock to my location fairly quickly. However directions or navigation won't lock. I've waited as long as 15 minutes. I've uninstalled maps and reinstalled, checked my etc/gps file to make sure it was the north america map. I've done a full wipe twice using super wipe and reinstalled the rom. I've changed between stock radio and the recommended radio for the rom.
Basically, I have no idea why my gps refuses to lock when using navigation or even just for "print" directions.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I have exatly the same situation mine locks after about 20 minutes 15 minutes or so ... this is something I used on a daily basis I need help
I have the same problem I need the gps :/
have you tried gps fix from the market? worked for me
thank you for your answer suwu10
I just tested gps fix. Unfortunately no improvement so do not work
yup GPSfix worked for me also
Not for me.GPS enabled , i opened gpsfix and finds nothing or google maps. HelP!
yep, ever since I s-off'ed and rooted my phone, my GPS will not lock.
My GPS stopped working with i downloaded the Custom Firmwares.
So i reverted back to the original one and got it working again,
I guess its a driver problem in the CFWs

the same with me, but I can't go back to stock t-mobile anymore.
I hate that I have to choose between working GPS and running a custom rom
This issue is sometimes caused by not matched radios.
Try installing the correct RIL for your radio or flashing the recommended radio for the custom ROM.

I had the same issue a month ago. Turned out that the RIL and Radio needed to match in order to gps lock in navigation. I went through flashing diff roms even reverted to my stock setup and I had the same no gps lock issue.
What I did was made sure I had the correct RIL that matched my radio. Then if I needed to reflash the ril because of the different roms, I just referred to this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14589319&postcount=1 to toggle on the radio to "wake" it up. Went to a gps locker app and made sure it locked on before going to google nav to test if it worked or not. Of course you need to be in an open area to see if the gps locks .
Try that I hope that helps!
My GPS wouldn't lock either until I installed a free app from the market called GPS Status & Toolbox. As soon as I ran that app it picked up a bunch of satellites and it now locks on instantly.
I've matched RILs to my radio, used GPS toolbox, and turned the radio off and on to "wake" it up with absolutely no luck.
The GPS worked absolutely fine when it was stock, but once I flashed a rom, or any rom for that matter, the GPS wouldn't work.
I would greatly appreciate any help, as I am lost without GPS (literally)

Rogers Gingerbread 2.3.3 Bug Report Thread

My fellow Canadians...
I have noticed a number of issues with the latest official firmware for the Rogers captivate. I think it would be a good idea to put them all in one place and try to start figuring out what common issues exist and perhaps we can address them all at once. Please state the issue, when it seems to happen, and what if any modifications you have made to your software setup. Maybe someone will notice a pattern or trend and we can get them resolved.
Thanks!

One major issue I have noticed is when updating apps through the 3.1.5 market. It seems to only happen when I am updating an app, not when I am installing a new app:
Sorry!
The application TwLauncher(process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
At which point I have to force close it.
Also, I have experienced random shut downs, I will click the power/screen lock button to unlock the phone, and it seems the phone has shut itself off. If you hold down the power button it boots normally.
Anyone else experiencing these issues?

Did you try a factory reset after you updated?
Voice for Swype
The voice command for Swype doesn't work.......
1. Speed dial no longer works. Says 'USSD code running' then closes and gives message 'unknown application'
2. GPS has stopped working completely.
As far as the launcher crashes, I don't use touchwiz. I do use Launcher Pro. It does seem to crash every so often. I've replaced all my widgets because I've read somewhere that this might help.
No random shutdowns here.
I talked to a samsung technical support rep and his captivate's swype voice input didn't work either.

GPS works perfectly on mine captivate 2.3.3 and I get better reception and locking time. But GPS will stop working if you flashed a custom Kernel on it! I know that because I tried it and GPS wasn't working when I had a custom Kernel, had to flash back the stock kernel.
Edit: I just tried Speed dial and it's working perfectly, I think there is something wrong on your phone.

I hadn't thought of that; I wonder if I'll lose my root? Come to think of it, I wonder if that's causing the launcher crashes...

Got the phone from Rogers with 2.1 then upgraded to 2.2 then to 2.3.3 (all done through Kies. GPS was ok but spotty on 2.1 and much better with Froyo but hoped Gingerbread would bring more improvement.
I've tested it since Rogers released 2.3.3 and on a few occasions I've even gone to the roof of my building on a clear day and waited for 45mins!! and nothing! Not lock then lose it but NOTHING! Speed dial I can live without but I actually use the GPS quite a bit.
Since upgrading I've done a factory reset 4 times and even sent it in for repair, which came back saying "upgraded SW and factory reset" which fixed nothing.
I've just rooted (just root nothing else) and I've tried to do use the gps code but I can't even get into that!!
What can I do at this point?

Yeah, with the 2.3.3 you can't access the gps setting by entering the code, because everything you enter the code *#*#3214789650#*#*, you'll get a message saying "Service mode has crashes blablaba...". The only that I found to bypass that was to go to market and install the app "Anycut" then launch it, select New Shortcut, Activity then choose Angry gps.
I'll look up what's the problem that causing you not to get a good gps signal.

Man I was going nuts trying that gps code. Googled and searched this forum and everything pointed to that code. Was ready to toss my phone off the roof!
Was reading these forums for the past couple weeks learning how to root/flash (just rooted today actually) to get gps working.
I'm guessing I might have to try flashing it again with the stock rom from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133 but gotta do some more reading before attempting it.

I use an app called GPS Status from the market. There, in the menu under 'tools', you can 'manage A-GPS state and wipe the location info the GPS has back to scratch. Then download the assistance data from the internet. This worked well for me and I do it from time to time to keep things current.

How long have you had the phone? The random shut downs is not a ROM issue. I am pretty sure it is a hardware problem. It was acknowledged by Samsung. There is even a list of effected builds. I am sure you could find the build numbers with a little search. I had this problem when I first got the phone last December but had Rogers replace it. If it is the same problem, I think you will notice that the sleep of death only occurs when the battery is like above 85% or somthing like that. It has been a while so I can't exactly remember.
I can't seem to get the firmware actually downloaded. I'm going through kies and it recognizes my phone, and recognizes that I need to upgrade, starts downloading the upgrade and at 12% it disconnects. I have two screen shots here that show what I am talking about.
Any ideas?

What the heck is wrong with this GPS?

The GPS will find and get a fix on anywhere from 5 - 9 satellites in 3 or 4 seconds but will not get a lock for anywhere from 4 to 20 minutes or sometimes I give up after about 45 minutes. I have read these forums until I'm half blind and have replaced the gps.conf file in /system/etc about three times with improvements/modifications suggested by others. And still the GPS will not get a lock most of the time. On a couple of occasions it locked on in a mater of a few seconds, but that's rare.
Could this be a bug or is there some setting I'm not aware of? A couple of threads have said the com port needs to have the right address, but I cannot find any com port references on my phone using root explorer. I did a google search and could not find any GPS/com port settings.

It all depends on what rom, kernel, radio, ril you are running. Sometimes it's as simple as matching the radio to the correct ril file. Or other times, it can be a kernel issue.
So basically, for now are you rooted? List what rom you are using, current radio and ril file. Also list which kernel you are using.
I have also recently learned as well that the superuser has a factor as well if you are rooted.
I'm using the ARHD 3.6.2 XE ROM and the recommended radio which is 10.58.9035.00P_10.15.9035.02_2. The kernel is 2.6.35.14-sensation-faux123-v0.2.1 (all from Mike1986). I did some testing a few days ago and found that superuser Ver. 3.05 did indeed interfere with the GPS. SU has been updated to V 3.06 and I haven't had any issues with FC or permissions since, but I have not tried testing to see if it still interferes with GPS.

LOL I thought your nick seemed familiar. I remember you testing out that SU issue.
First off, have you tried different kernels at this point? Go back to a htc kernel and try the gps, then if you get the same results try different gps.conf files.
I have been testing out different kernels on an agps beta file test. Try the fix, make sure on the /system/etc, there is no suplroot file in there and push the gps.conf. I'll attach a good gps.conf for you to push over from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262652.
Use the "generic" one first. You can either push the file in the zip or flash it in recovery.
Here is an example of the frustration. I took this screenshot just a few minutes ago outside under a clear, cloudless sky. The GPS found and fixed on 8 satellites in about 4 seconds. There was no lock after 15 minutes so I quit and came inside. With that many satellites and that pattern I should have had a good lock as soon as they came up.

Actually that is the gps.conf file I am using now. I installed it a few days ago. There is no doubt it helps find and fix the satellites in quick time and is a vast improvement over over the stock, but I still have the lock-on problem.
Any suggestions on which kernel to try?
P.S. Told you I had been reading these forums

I would say try the stock htc kernel first but if you want to just jump into another kernel try the bricked ones. I personally didn't have great luck with the faux kernels at all. Shame because it was really good. Anyways, here's the link to the bricked. Also make sure you don't have that suplrootcert in the system/etc folder either.

The suplcert root is not required. In my beta testing, I tried with and without and in my testing, I ran it without it. You can just move it to your sd card for back up if you want to revert back to it.
But I never use it and it is optional. It's supposed to connect to the servers quicker, but it never did in my testing.
Wow, this is weird. I installed the bricked kernel in your link and guess what - the GPS came right up. The bad news is WiFI did not. I looked at settings -> wireless & networks and the first thing on the list is Airplane mode and it is flashing on and off. I can get wifi to work for about 30 seconds then airplane mode cuts it off. Ever seen anything like this? That is really strange.
Just found out your link is for a CM7 ROM. I'll try something else.

Ack sorry about that. I am recovering from a cold and I took drugs that got me out of it lol....
Well at least you know now that the kernel can be the cause of your gps probs. You just have to check which kernel combo works for your setup.

Everytime I flash a new ROM 9/10 times my GPS won't lock the first time I use it. MY FIX: I go to settings>applications>maps> and clear cache, then reboot. When I open navigation it locks in less than 10 seconds 100% time. Try it before a new kernel or radio, it's easy and almost always effective.

Bad gps on SynergyROM

Hey guys is me again lol. I just flashed the newest SynergyROM update ( 1.7 ) and my gps doesnt show me at the correct location. It keeps moving around my area, mostly 3 to 4 blocks away from me. i didnt mind that however when i go on navigation, the directions are incorrect due to the location being wrong. Is there a fix for this? I did a full wipe before installing just like instruction on the thread and i installed it after going back to stock and rooting.

Have you tried the Synergy thread? A lot has been discussed about GPS issues.

i did check it and tried going to stock and then back to synergy and still same issue.
Edit: I just started reading many of the comments and i guess i will wait for the next update. Battery life is too good to quit the rom.
Thanks for the reply
From what I read about it, and I've been following the thread because I use Synergy, its possible that it is a hardware issue. Or its possible that you need to Odin back to stock and start over. I've been flashing and reflashing Synergy since 1.0 (or maybe it was 1.1) and haven't had much in the way of issues, GPS works fine.
I'm on one of the nightlies right now, have you tried using the current nightly? Not sure what else I can suggest, I'm pretty new to it all really.
hope this gets fixed
If you flash back to stock does GPS work fine
Ive seen a few posts that gps doesnt work and they have been told flash back then flash rom, but my question is when back to stock does gps work then? if not maybe its the phone its self
I have not had any problems even VZW can find me if i turn gps off

This may not the best route, but it has worked for me so far:
I'm also on v1.7 (Odined back to stock unrooted; rooted via GS3_debugfs-root_r2; CWM 6.0.1.0; clean v1.7 install with data/cache/dalvik wipes) and this is what I did when I initially flashed and noticed GPS locking issues:
1. Toggled GPS
2. Went outside & launched GPS Test
3. Updated AGPS
4. Once the "In Use" # of satellites in GPS Test showed 2 or more I launched Google maps and got an immediate lock.
Since the initial flashing of v1.7 when I have GPS locking issues:
1. Toggle GPS
2. Go outside and launch GPS Test.
3. Once the "In Use" # of satellites in GPS Test show 2 or more I launch Google maps. I usually then get an immediate lock. I also verify with Waze.
I noticed that if I keep GPS on, then I don't have to launch GPS Test to get a lock. However, if I turn GPS off and toggle it back on right before I need it, my GPS lock takes longer. If I'm waiting past 30 secs for a lock, I just launch GPS Test and wait for the "In Use" number to populate before going back to Maps or Waze
Is your Wifi on? Sounds strange but the same thing was happening to me and it said turn the Wifi on and I locked in after being 3 blocks off
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I actually got my gps problem fixed. I odin back to root66 and did a factory reset there and ran maps, the gps was working fine. Then i upgraded to the newest synergy and gps is working fine as well. I did a full wipe before going to synergy.
