Love my captivate - dont think ill be upgrading for a while.... - Captivate General

I have a few minor gripes with this phone, but no more than I'd have with any new android phone.
My battery is awesome. There is so much development and support for it. The screen is beautiful. Its fast. Best looking (even with my case)
The next phone I buy is gonna have to really blow my captivate out of the water, because it looks like ill be keeping this for a long time...

i also, did quite a bit of forum research before buying my captivate so i knew the minor problems "gps" going into it,nothing beats a good ole fashioned paper map, even with 15 days left on the return policy,i'm keeping this one

Yea definitely an excellent phone, I'm using Cognition 3 and I love it, I don't think I need the front facing camera at all.

Well the problem is I don't know what to get next. All devices are locking/signing bootloaders now:
Motorola
HTC
LG
Sony Ericcson
..
Anyone know what Galaxy S II will do?

Id guess the S2 wont, but who knows.
I think Ill probably just be waiting for the next nexus phone to come out. the current one is just a minor upgrade from the captivate. Theres obviously going to be a ton of support for it, and it will be out for ATT since they bought T-mobile.
I think even if i were buying a phone today, I might still go with the captivate over other android phones simply because its the most customizable.
To me its the ATT equivalent to the original moto droid.

I bet what the Atrix can do the captivate does better. But thats just me....
No one knows yet if the atrix will have a locked bootloader! If so it would be dumb to buy it IMO.
sent from my SGH-I897 running Serendipity 4.3 w/ Exists SuckerPunch SpeedMod Remix kernel and KP1 modem!!
I believe the Nexus S and the Captivate have the same hardware, but I may be wrong...but if I am right I say go for the Captivate because I don't like the Nuxus S form factor (Basically the metal back plate of the Captivate vs the Nexus S plastic backplate)
Hmm whoever says Captivate does better then Atrix will, is just biased in a way. I mean I got a captivate and gave it to my brother, he really wanted to try android and he doesn't get in to phones that much.
I loved the phone, only because I rooted it and stuff and samsung sucks with updates. If you dont wanna mess around with your phone then atrix hands down will blow away captivate, performance and feature wise. Buying captivate right now is just bad choice. Dual core processor, tegra 2, hdmi out.
Plus I have to give credit where its due. Motorola has really stepped up their game in updating their phones with latest android. I have no doubts that they will have gingerbread on Atrix in the coming months.
I think Atrix will be launching earlier then previously thought, mainly because verizon is getting iphone 4 and att will counter that with atrix 4g. Plus Atrix 4g is the only phone launching that is ready for Att's LTE network.
^
Agreed, I really hope those that are use to customizing their Captivate understand the bootloader situation with the Atrix. Or you will be disappointed.
I for one, don't mind running it stock (hoping it's able to be rooted). I just want reliability and stability from this phone, plus the webtop looks kickass.
I will still keep the Captivate for my other line, and buy the Atrix off contract (no chipin required ) after a month or so of it's release to see how all this plays out. Patience will save you from buyers remorse

Move over, I think I'll be in the same boat My main line will either be the Atrix or HTC. The other will have to be the Captivate for a little while, but I'll have fun tweaking the hell out of it
If you want the latest and greatest..then wait..If not..get one now..You got 30 days to decide once you get it..With what has been ported for the Captivate you have many many choices..and you don't really know what the phone your waiting for will have or do..or be capable of doing. I suspect if not on the upcoming generation of new phones..then by the 1.4 to 1.6 dual cores..the boot loader will be locked..and you will have a a harder time doing anything with it..so...if it were me trying to decide...I would pick up a brand new Captivate right now..trick it out..and enjoy the hell out of it..The old saying is appropriate in this case..." A bird in the hand...is worth 2 in the bush..."
Mac
I'm projecting the latest and greatest will only last 3 to 6 months. So whatever you purchase, just be sure your content with it. Unless you have money to burn.
I doubt that Motorola will lock the bootloader on the Atrix.
Either way, the Atrix will run circles around the lowly Captivate.
Motorola locked the bootloader on the droid x and it was still hands down better then the captivate, I owned both would have stuck with droid x if verizon had better coverage in my area. I almost regret giving it up and just sticking out the ****ty signal. So more then likely bootloader will be locked but it will be cracked. and even if locked bootloader no way in hell will the captivate be better at anything over atrix, captivate had nothing on x and atrix does even more, so what is captivate gonna do to even be on par with it? samsung has moved on from the captivate so should u. anytime a manufacture moves on that quick from a device even a device selling in the numbers it is, its a bad sign. Besides Motorola been in phone biz way longer then any of them, I had a startak and it was a sweet phone of the time. And those big stupid phones way back in the day that was huge that was motorola aswell.
I say wait. A locked bootloader having Atrix > the Captivate (stock, custom ROM, steroids, etc. lol)

I think they now recognize what XDA/Custom ROMs can do for their phone(s) in a positive way, and they'll come to some sort of compromise.
What that is, and if it's good enough, remains to be seen.

The only thing i would have to disagree on in a way is the part of Samsung moving away so fast on a great selling product. It doesn't necessarily mean they didn;t like it and need to replace it fast.. it could just be that they want to get to work on their next "latest and greatest" to beat the captivate is all.. but who knows.. unless they posted that they made a mistake, i would be willing to bet that they are just trying to get their next best phone out is all.. So far, i believe the captivate is the best selling android through ATT at the moment. i am not up to date on the rest though . ive heard good things about the nexus S, but the one thing I heard aobut it that kinda made me go for captivate is that supposed nexus S took away the SD slot?? and this made captivate have largest storage capacity.. but ive been happy with it so far.. wife loves it and eventually when i get a new one, will give her mine ..
one thing i do wonder is since ATT is now coming out with their 4G, i cant recall if I am going to need to replace my phone or just my SIM to get the 4G capability,, any recall off hand? pretty sure it was the phone that I will need to replace, but would be great if only needed the sim
As I said: Wait for the Atrix. Motorola actually updates their phones. Don't like Motoblur? Download ADW.Launcher or Launcher Pro. Android 2.2 already does everything I need in a phone OS and I'm sure they'll bring Gingerbread to the Atrix.

Just a tribute to the Captivate...

I can't believe I'm not in a hurry to jump ship to the Galaxy S2. The Cappy has been such a good experience as a phone and it's still able to do whatever I need it to do. When the Fuze came out I couldn't help but be there the first day to pick one up. I was compelled to have the latest and greatest, and the abilities a new smartphone would allow. The same happened the release day of the Captivate.
Sure, it's had its issues (GPS and capped data speeds come to mind) but between the performance of hardware and the constant ROM updates from the dev community, I just don't feel that compulsion to move on from the Captivate. For me it's been a great phone and it's made me a big fan of Samsung's products. Oh I'll get a Galaxy S2 here in a month or two when the price comes down a bit. But I'm still happy with my Captivate and I'll keep it around as a backup.
ditto
i will likely wait until december unless the deal is too good to pass up.
Want to see what develops with the nexus prime.
Some info claims it will be a Verizon Exclusive but i am skeptical. I think that it is more likely we will see it launch exclusively on verizon with a 30-60 window before other carriers get it....so i am not giving up on the prime....the solid metal body construction alone will be worth the wait...just hope ATT gets it.

That is what has my attention as well...Galaxy Note.
I don't feel the need to upgrade from my Captivate either. Its a weird feeling, I use to be such a phone whore, now I look at new phones and feel they can't do a whole lot for me (personally, I know the phones are actually huge upgrades) that my Captivate can't do.
I HATE how ALL of the new phones being announced are so huge! 4.3" isn't TOO bad, but I do prefer my 4" screen. They're just getting bigger too, I want the Nexus Prime so badly, but there's no way I'm getting it with a 4.65" screen. My upgrade isn't until May 2012 and I'm questioning if there will even be a phone out there I like by then.

I'm with you guys. Once the GS II finally came out, I am not as excited. The last ROM I put on is great and until that note comes out, paying 200 for the GS2 isn't so alluring.
Especially with LTE on horizon and the Note, which will be awesome.

The article says 4.6". It may not be so bad since that probably includes the buttons at the bottom, I'll just have to see it in person, but I still think it will be a very large device.
I'm a captivate owner and I really love it. I will not change it in a while..
The only two things that I don't really like in Captivate are very bad sensitive buttons (well, I replaced screen after it was broken, and than buttons were like that) and very bad battery life, especially with MIUI
But speed and functionality are just grear. And still love the screen with maximum brightness. I think I will buy Galaxy Note or Nexus Prime, will see...
I'm with you guys, but not by choice. I have a contract to fulfil.

I'll also be waiting for the Note.
I just looked up the Galaxy Note. Wow...! That thing looks amazing. It might be just a bit too big but I'm really considering jumping on that.
I'm with you guys. There is no real reason to upgrade just yet. With a good custom ROM (Cog5), it does everything I ask of it, and does it quickly. The screen is just amazing, and only the SAMOLED Plus beats it, if you ask me. Since I'm not on contract, I can switch when I want, but I see nothing out there I just gotta have. The Prime may change that, but if it is CDMA, then I'm out. Big Red is too expensive for my blood.

ICS Getting Closer

So the original s2 and international only? Hope the skyrocket international comes along beside it so someone can port it to att for us.
Was really hoping for this to be att news. But I guess I should have less faith in them.
We have a different processor and gpu in our Skyrockets than the international version. Not sure if ICS for that device would help a lot for rom development on ours, but then again we have some amazing devs here on XDA
Or not...
They updated their article:

Update: Samsung's just tweeted that March 10th date is (sadly) wrong. It added that once the upgrade schedule is concrete, it'll confirm through its dedicated Twitter account.

As long as LG isn't the one to get it.....my wife's (after I pawned it off on her) Thrill is still yet to be updated to Gingerbread.
Comparing Samsung to others like Motorola and HTC, they are all the same. At least they have been pushing updates for bug fixes and such. The Thrill has yet to get even ONE update and they have major rebooting issues along with others. I would buy another Samsung. Would prefer they were the ones to get the next Nexus phone again.

I traded my Thrill for the Skyrocket because of this. SO glad I don't have that paper weight anymore. At least we know ICS is coming, and it's about ready. LG was just playing with our emotions.
I said the same thing about only getting Nexus, but I was unimpressed with the specs of this last one and my NS4G had horrible reception issues because of a ****ty antenna.
Add to this the fact that they omit an SD card slot <--That is the biggest deal breaker by far! I like being able to take all of my files with me from phone to phone and not have to spend hours transferring files when I get a new phone.
Its basically just the carriers, if you want to get updates and have an amazing phone get the international version! I would speend 300 bucks more to pick up a of gs2 when it first came out. But I get a free phone anyway. Same thing for the gs3 the galaxy devices are pretty dang good! I mean the gs2 is still on of the best IMO. Or at least just got past after a year of it being out. So grab that extra. Money and go for it

It sucks that they're taking so long. But, if you want to stay w/ GSM, I think the SR is still the best game in town ICS or not. Battery life on the Nitro and Vivid aren't nearly as good. And when I played w/ them at the store, they weren't nearly as responsive as the S2 (i777 or SR). The Nitro's screen was nicer, but wasn't so much nicer that I'd give up battery life and performance (and LG doesn't do much better w/ updates either). Nexus is cool, but if you don't wanna pay $6-700, value external storage, and LTE, that's off the table, too.
Samsung should've been happy w/ the original S2 (still one of the best phones available right now). They didn't need to release so many versions. I had in mind before buying this phone that the i777 will get ICS before the SR (either thru XDA or official) since the hardware is nearly identical to the international version. But, LTE was more important to me than ICS.
We can keep waiting for that perfect phone, or be happy that we have an awesome phone right now.
nexus devices are always inferior then the latest phone of that year...For example...Nexus S was inferior then SGS and now Galaxy Nexus in inferior then SG2....
I agree with above poster...with so many devs working for our phones, I think I would always go for a better hardware then the one which will get updated quickly.
I am using Samsung Captivate now, I am already running ICS (almost stable). it was one of best smartphone hardware wise 2 yrs ago..so its still getting development really good.
Waiting for official updates is dumb. The devs is where the good stuff comes from. ICS will be on our SR's from our devs loooooooong before Samung or ATT gets it to us. Standby for the good stuff. It's coming.
Sent from low Earth orbit with my SkyRocket.
So there's no XDA release of ICS yet for Skyrocket?
Not a fully functional or stable one.

Galaxy S Relay 4G Development Thread

So it seems my thread questioning about anyone getting the Relay has turned in the the Dev thread for it since for some reason XDA doesnt want to make a thread dedicated to it. I personally ended up buying a Note 2 which is why I dont follow this thread anymore but I just recieved a PM saying the thread was moved so I figured I would change the title of the thread from "Any one planning on getting the Galaxy Relay 4G" to "Galaxy S Relay 4G Development Thread".

Thats what im thinking. I hope that the rumor of a 5mp camera is wrong and it ends up being an 8mp but even if it is a 5 as long as it has a good sensor and flash ill be happy. So far it seems it will basically be a Galaxy S3 with a 4" screen and a QWERTY minus 1GB ram which really doesnt matter. Ive never owned a samsung before but i guess they are really easy to root with a program from samsung called odin. Hopefully CM will be supporting it.
Either way, it could be the next best upgrade for Desire Z owners. Especially with so many discouraged people with HTC and their policy's. They can keep them, and their phones. No ICS update, not even for related phones where we could bum the driver over. Not to forget how locked down the phone is. Plus Samsung phones are more consistant.

Yeah Samsung seems to be the way to go these days. HTC locks their bootloaders, both HTC and LG dont provide updates, Sony phones are just not even close to the competition. Samsung provides the ODIN program so you can do what you please with what you paid for plus it seems they are providing pretty decent updates with the S2 and Note both year old devices getting Jelly been. Where my year old G2x is still on GB.
I definitely plan to replace my wife's G2 with the Relay. I've had a Vibrant and now the TMO GS2, I love working with Samsung phones, much easier.

Either way I'm waiting for my T-Mobile contract to end. Once that happens, I'm going to give T-Mobile a decision to make. Either give me a new phone of my choosing, or I switch carriers. A lot of my friends do this, and they end up with a brand new phone, like Samsung Galaxy S3's, but they're out of contract and desperate to keep you in it.
Carriers tend to give new contracts better deals for phones then those who just got their upgrade. Also, there's a lot of other carriers who offer a lot more for less then the big US carriers.

The Infuse can't go on forever, and people get new phones eventually. It's just the nature of tech. I myself moved on from the Infuse, but have fond memories of it, since it was my first smartphone. But greener pastures were calling me. I now have the Moto G, which is a great phone for the price. It absolutely smokes the Infuse speed-wise. And as soon as the Nexus 6 comes out, I'm getting it. Yeah, I've become a performance whore. :victory:
But I will still come here to see how long the Infuse will live on. I say 6 months to a year, and these threads will be pretty much dead.

Are there any other Infuse related forums out there? XDA has always seemed like the most active, but I've never really looked for an alternative.

i too have moved on to a moto razr hd....doesn't even compare. the kernel is really outdated, i recently changed the battery from the original but i found that the batt life was just not sufficient with the new roms. i have mine on infinitum rom which seems to be the best upgrade for me from gb vis a vis battery. my moto lasts easily all day and more....but it was a great way to learn modding.
i have 2 new devices but still keep my infuse updated with the latest BeanStalk (would perfer omni or pa or something not so heavy)thats not to say i dont love beanstalk and scotts work or appreciate it, as i do i just wish there were more options to flash.
atm have my sIII running vanir
and my Nexus 7 running Omni, Ubuntu touch, PA, and slimkat... (thanks to multirom)
All devices must one day die... It's an unavoidable part of technology.
im still suporting the infuse on beanstalk best phone ive had its on par with the sensation that i had....just wish more devs would help scott out....if i were to "upgrade" i'd had to choose the S5 or the Htc One

Don't count on it, people are moving on. The Infuse had its day in the sun, now it's time to R.I.P. On a side note, can't wait for the Nexus 6. :good:

im with you on that nexus devices are awesome
There would be one more ROM that is active in the thread if the Carbon ROM maintainer could get the data/radio issues he's having sorted out, but he doesn't use the infuse as a main phone, so doesn't have a sim for it which means people have to test for him and I haven't seen any fixes pushed to their gerrit either recently. And plus I don't know if he has any help from any other devs. Oh well, as you've all said, she has to die some day. I myself am looking for a new phone, but just because the infuse is reaching end of life in terms of development. Otherwise I love this phone

Yeah, the infuse was the best phone I had too, up until I got my Moto G. After trying out some of the new phones a few months back, I could no longer hold onto the infuse. Things were slow and slightly flaky at times. Sure, it's a usable phone, but I wanted more. I wanted native KitKat, speed, more RAM, upgrades from the manufacturer, and to be more future-proof.
And after I get the Nexus 6, it will be the best I've had. A year later, something else will be the best, and it goes on and on.................
Just because the infuse is the best you've had, doesn't make it any more desirable at this point. Not putting you down for using it, as I had it for almost 2 yrs. and serviced me well. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before this infuse forum becomes a ghost town.

You're better off waiting for the next HTC One and saving your money. Everything becomes dated so quickly these days.

true since the GS5 is already gonna be released (to the public) and is the new one gonna be called the HTC Two? cause that would be funny
the infuse was an interim device to get an att 4g samsung phone out the door before the s2, which was released shortly thereafter. the result was a phone with the internals of the s1 (processor, ram, ect) and externals of the s2 (screen, camera, housing, ect) and of course a 4g hspa+ radio. the phone was an accidental success, selling 9 million devices, probably due to good reviews, superfluous awards, and a steep price drop after the s2 was released. att tried to copy the idea, albeit less successfully, with the skyrocket in an attempt to release a 4g lte phone. but theres no need for interim devices anymore to push a new radio technology as all phones since the s3 (the most successful smartphone ever) have had the latest and greatest lte radios.
the new htc will be called "the new htc one" a la the "the new ipad". its a terrible name and wont help the struggling company push new hardware. which is sad as it looks to be a very nice phone.
ill be saying goodbye to my infuse tomorrow as att has decided to replace it with an s4. ive been putting off buying a new phone. mostly because i have wanted to keep my options open and not sign a new contract. and ive been nitpicking on new devices as an excuse not to buy one. but the infuse is getting old an is scraping the minimum requirements for android and its getting time to upgrade. newer phones look like they will have a longer shelf life as even newer versions provide very little reason to upgrade. the s5 has almost nothing better than on the s4. its bigger, thicker, and heavier than the s4 to make room for a minuscule update in screen size, with rather useless features like a heart rate monitor (which you can do with you camera now anyways) and a terrible swipey finger print reader. you can also pick up a moto g, a very powerful phone, for chump-change.

heh. id probably pass. my brother had one. it didnt quite get the development it need.
I like my Infuse, but I have since moved on to the HTC MyTouch 4G Slide (a phone that is just as old). I wanted something a little smaller (one that could be carried in a lanyard case), but more importantly I missed having a physical keyboard (which is why I hung on to my LG Breeze feature phone for so long). The MT4GS covers both these things, and I'm mostly happy with it (battery drain with CM 10.1 is at the top of my annoyances).
I have been thinking of what to do with the Infuse next. Currently it is a media player and a backup phone, but I think I may hand it down to my sister, as she has a bit of an interest in smartphones now. However I'm having trouble parting ways with it. Oh well.
Sad to see a forum dwindle away to nothing.
I agree, it's very sad. But, time will always move forward and technology goes with it. All the devs for this device has made the infuse a legendary device, and I hate to see it become a thing of the past.

Don't play Taps too early. The latest ROM, 4.4.275, has proven to be quite a solid release for Infuse. Don't be surprised when Android 4.4.3 makes it to the Infuse.
