Root Question

I've searched out and read alot about rooting. I've down loaded the required files. Read and re-read as much as I can about rooting, flashing, recovery etc. I do not claim to understand it all. I'm still in my Buyers Remorse period so I won't root until thats over.
I've read from end to all, all the Custom ROM threads on this forum. EaglesBlood makes the comment...Wipe wipe wipe ....and he lists several things to wipe.
I've gone back into rooting and flashing guides and cannot find anything about Wipe.
I rooted only 1 time in my life....on the Nexus One....but don't recall using any wipe command.
I searched over in the Android forum for any kind of guide that would take me from Root to recovery to flash to update....and answer the wipe question for me.
I've flashed and wiped for years on Windows Phone....and spent the time in advance to understand the process and the steps ...before I attempted it. Want to be as sure with Android...before I step in...because...lord help me....if I brick the device, I'm gonna have to go to a Sensation....because G2x's aren't back on the market yet....and I really don't want to do that....I'll have to take back everything I said about the sensation if I do....
Does anyone know of a guide that goes from root to recovery to backup to flash and includes the tips and tricks like....wipe, when to wipe, etc?

For clockworkmod(backups, restores, rom and kernel flashing) check out the nvflash topic in dev section
For all roms there is usually instructions as what exactly to do in steps.

I will help answer your question. When you root an android phone you are installing files that give you the ability to modify your rom, and recovery. These files are stored in a separate partition on your phone that is hidden from the phone you will not need to wipe when just rooting your phone.
If you want to install a custom rom you will need to first flash a different recovery for the g2x you need to use nvflash. This process once again you will not need to wipe the phone. Whit this recovery you can make backups of you phone and does not require a custom rom.
If you want to then install a custom rom use the new recovery to make a backup first that way you can restore your phone if anything goes wrong.
Now after your back up and after down loading what ever new rom you wish to use it is always suggested to wipe your phone. Wiping clears out all your personal files from you rom partion making it easier for the new rom to install the new files needed for the rom and to modify any old ones.

There are a couple of options in the recovery menu that let you wipe data. When I boot into clockwork mod recovery you can choose to wipe all user data, cache, dalvik cache, and battery statistics. They're located under different sub menus but they're all there. When your ready to flash a rom make sure you have a backup, then wipe all user data 2 or 3 times (thus the Wipe Wipe Wipe you were referring to), wipe dalvik cache, and then flash. Some people recommend wiping battery statistics too but I don't know if that's necessary every time. Once you've wiped everything sufficiently then flash your rom. Wiping just ensures you're starting with a clean slate.

Right after I posted this, I found unlockr.com. Not that he looks like 'The' expert, he puts everyones stuff together in the same place. I saw where the WIPE WIPE WIPE comes from.
I had already used this superone click thread on this forum to gather the files...but wanted to see the steps in action....the vids on the unlockr site show me the steps quite nicely.

"Wipe, wipe, wipe" refers to wipe the data, cache, and Dalvik cache, which is done via CWM.

What to do before flashing?

Hey everyone. New to the Android side of the world and the Rooting/Flashing, Just left the apple scene and glad I did. Love my HTC Inspire.
Now for the question.
I have already rooted my phone and made a back up of it the initial root. and wanted to know if I should wipe/factory reset my phone prior to flashing the custom rom?

Install a bootloader first, then xRecovery or Clockworkmod to flash a ROM. You will lose the current ROM and all settings if you flash to NAND, but I suggest to wipe it to be sure.

[Q] Revolver 4 RC3 questions

I've been reading threads for a day and a half now, but still have some lingering questions about flashing this rom. I hope this is the right forum to get some of them resolved.
1) I'm coming from the current stock ota ICS update that has been rooted with the 1-click method and CWM flashed during the root process. Can I just flash RC3 through something like CWM Recovery or Rom Manager directly from stock?
2) I'm on a BB0 tablet. I've been reading a lot on other rom threads about people bricking them irreversibly while trying to flash custom firmware. Is it possible to get RC3 loaded at all on my tablet, or am I fighting for the losing team?

If you have recovery it's pretty darn hard to perma brick, so make sure you have a *GOOD* CWM (That means internal-external/adb/changes stick)!
Then just wipe all of your data/factory reset in CWM, wipe the cache, the dalvik-cache, then install the Rom.zip in cwm. All set

Thanks very much for the reply. So how can I be sure that I have full adb access? Forgive the noobishness, but from what I gather from searching is that the BB0 numbered TF101s have (or at least were having) trouble with adb for some reason. I believe that with this most recent rooting/cwm flashing that I performed, I am good to go. I just don't know how to test that.

You're mixed up ADB with APX. That's for NvFlash, do you have a Tf101 or Tf101G?
The S/N doesn't really matter.

I have Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and i am currently on I727UCLF6 stock firmware I727UCLF6_I727ATTLF6_ATT, my question
Is it OK to Falsh CM9 on top of Stock I727UCLF6_I727ATTLF6_ATT?
If yes should i flash the nightly cm-9-20120721-NIGHTLY-skyrocket.zip or cm-9.0.0-RC2-skyrocket.zip is better?

Have you done any of that reading we suggested you do? Flashing CM9 on top of stock without wiping the cache and Dalvik and doing a factory wipe will turn your phone into a brick, which you seem to be intent on doing. Seriously, if you have to ask a question like, "Can I flash a new ROM on top of my existing stock?", you're not ready to flash ROMs.
Read, learn and understand before doing, or you will brick, and you will find little sympathy here.

After the nightmare i had before when i lost my signal, MAN i did a lot of reading!!!1
I have successfully flashed my phone to cm-9.0.0-RC2-skyrocket.zip but before that i did some wiping as the following:
1- Wipe data/factory reset (Three times)
2- Wipe cache partition (Three times)
3- from mount & storage, format system (Three times)
4-Wipe Dalvik cache (Three times)

All the wiping really isn't necessary. Flash the rom, then modems if needed, then one factory reset and reboot. That's it.

Do you know which modem that work with this Skyrocket & cm-9.0.0-RC2-skyrocket.zip ROM under T-mobile for full 4G speed?

Probably the UVLE1 modems from the T989 ics release.

or you could just follow the instructions the dev almost always posts along with the rom...
anyway, if the dev does not post instructions for some reason then just default to:
1) make a nandroid
2) wipe data/factory reset
3) wipe cache
4) wipe dalvik cache
5) flash rom and gapps if necessary
6) reboot
you obviously still do not understand what it means to flash roms, so until you do, just follow the directions EXACTLY as the dev posts them.
also, i would not recommend flashing a new rom before wiping then wiping afterward, sounds like a pretty dirty install

I don't want to end up loosing signal like what happened to me before Man it was a night mare...
OK I got the cm-9.0.0-RC2-skyrocket.zip ROM installed, so now what do you guys suggest for
radio + kernel combination along with the above ROM to get 3g/4g on my unlocked i727 using a Tmobile sim?

1. How to fresh install roms (cleanrom in my case)? Just factory reset in recovery before flashing (TWRP 2.4)? Wipe Cache, dalvik before or after?
2. What's the proper order for wipe cache\dalvik\data? Is it before rom installation, after or both ?
Lets say im using stock rom and want to do a clean install. I just want what comes with clean rom. No leftovers from the old installation. What steps should i take?

I consider what I want and what is suggested as the proper install for the particular rom (see the op as roms vary).
You don't want anything left so I'd do spring cleaning. In twrp ( update your twrp to 2.4.1.0 ) if I wanted clean as you say I'd wipe cache, dalvik, data, and system (no formatting just wipe). Before you do this make sure you have one known good backup on your internal sdcard and on your external sdcard. You should also have a flashable zip on each. Insure you can see these files on both cards (with twrp) before you wipe. If you practice this method you will always have an out if there is a problem. If you don't then with what has been wiped you are assured a brick at sometime in the future. I do this before to clear my unit; when you are told to do some wipes afterwards this is to clear something in the rom you are flashing.
Sorry but I was required to say that as you never know who might see this in the future and not know to protect themselves.

Make sure you are unlocked. Install TWRP 2.4.1.0 over fast boot from a PC or too manager if you are already rooted.
You can install CROMI straight over stock with a dalvik cache and cache wipe but if you want a clean system just wipe data via the factory reset option inside TWRP (not the boot loader) and then flash the CROMI file. Recommend odex if you are just starting out.

thanks. thats pretty much what i did the second time. after failing to do a clean install i went back and almost used format which i guess is bad for those who dont know what the hell it does.. but the red letters in twrp swayed me away from that option

That sucks. There's software out there that can probably help you recover what was on your card.
As for a clean install, you'll probably want to throw a ROM image/zip onto another SD (if you plan on recovering from your current one) and then get into recovery to flash it.
It's a pretty general set of instructions, but as sbdags said though, you may find better advice in the right forum.
