[ROM] 03/31/11 PlayItCool1.1 - OC'd Kernel + Battery Saver, DarkTremor A2SD, Deodexed - EVO Shift 4G Android Development

This is my first ROM ever, so feedback is welcome. I developed this to meet my needs, but am willing to make revisions so I can continue to learn. FYI, I'm still working on tightening up some PNGs. Otherwise, let me know of any problems (Rom related, pls. )
DOWNLOAD
Backup all user data.
download to SD Card.
wipe, wipe, wipe
flash.
Features/Change Log:
bcnice20's [Kernel] [GPL] Sense 2.6.32.21 OC/UV 1.51GHZ (CFS-Smartass-TUN) (v1.1)
Added Calkulin's battery saver script (no need for setcpu/overclock widget) (v1.1)
Added Calkulin's SDCard read-ahead fix (v1.1)
Fixed busybox (Adfree apk & Root Uninstaller should now work) (v1.1)
Moved more Sprint/HTC apps to data/apps (thx JKILO) (v1.1)
Sprint VVM has been readded (v1.1)
System tweaks for better performance (v1.1)
DarkTremor A2SD 2.7.5.3 Beta 4 (Bug: lowmem/minfree settings will not keep on reboot)
Unlocked 3G USB tethering & Sprint Hotspot
4-in-1 Boot Menu
5mb limit on the mms
Updated host file to block annoying ads
Removed ADB icon from Taskbar
Circular Battery Mod
Zipalign on Boot
A2SD is off by default for initial boot so you won't get boot loops. To activate afterwards, adb shell and type a2sd reinstall. More commands can be found here. FYI, your SD card needs to be setup with an EXT partition to use. Instructions are here.
Calkulin Notes about Battery Saver script:
It completely eliminates the need for SetCPU or Overclock Widget
Easily customizable if you use a text editor(scripts located in /system/etc/init.d, & begin with 00cpufreq)
It will set Max/Min CPU speed to 245MHz when a sleep
If SetCPU or Overclock Widget are detected, the script is ignored, so it will not affect them
Preset profiles are:
1.2GHz - 100-90%
1.0GHz - 89-51%
806MHz - 50-16%
768MHz - 15-0%
GApps are installed in data/apps
Sprint bloatware has been removed, but APKs are available on the SD Card
Thanks to:
Preludedrew for the base
bcnice20 for the kernel (GPL Source)
x99percent for original kernel (GPL Source)
Tkirton for A2SD
Calkulin for the battery saver & sd card fix scripts
aamikam for the 4in1 Boot Mod
Nfinitefx45 for the Hotspot, USB notification & MMS ports
Fightspit for the Circle battery mod
Charlieb620 for boot animation
Zenulator, Nfinitefx45, Impaler & Calkulin for inspiration

Great presentation! Especially for a first release. If you ever want a beta tester, anything at all: feel free to pm me!

EDIT: Don't know how mods are being these days, but might wanna add a [GPL] tag to the front of your Thread and link to x99's github for source in the bottom of OP. You know how these people are... meddling with unreleased source!

Welcome. Its nice to see some fresh blood in the shift forum. Kind through me off when i saw this thread. Lol hadnt seen a new one in awhile. I will be downloading and testing very soon. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the support & insight. Like I said in the OP, I'm totally new to this, so all feedback & direction is welcome. I was a Hero user too, so I was spoiled with all of the ROM/Theme/Mod choices. So I decided to give it a try. 1000 boot loops later, I have something to work with, LOL

I'm also somewhat new here, I've been on PPCGeeks with my TP2 for a while but not much going on with this device there. but this looks great, can't wait to try it out

Trying out now....

Just realized I didn't have the updater script extract the removed apps to the SD card . Will put up a revised link shortly.
Also, to everyone trying out, let me know how the market is working for you. I updated to the new version before I created the zip, and it seems kind of buggy to me.
Thanks all.

Thanks bro. I'm not familiar with that program. I usually use Titanium, or Root Explorer. I'll look into that though. What kind of error does it give you when you try to uninstall?

Clay never really puts a changelog because hes mainly based off of twitter, he does these for himself really if i had to guess because he doesnt publicize them that much. Its basically CM5 with a whole new look, a diff launcher, swap script, gapps included with the requirement of an EXT partition.

Yessirrr.
10char.
Surprised it's taken this long to appear on here.
I've been using this for a day or so now. Very nice, quick and none of the issues (for me at least) that are being reported in the CM5 test2 thread.
Many thanks to HTCClay.
Am using this theme on test2 by pushing framework and the beta Launcher
nice rom, quicker than cyanogen
how can i go back to the stock launcher though?
To get the Superbad theme on CM5, I pushed framework-res.apk. I also pushed services.jar but that might not have been necessary.
They go in /system/framework
Same idea for the themed ADW Launcher

This rom is great on battery and it also gives you the power and control you would like. Make sure you follow me on twitter to get updates on all of the future versions of this rom. To overclock download Set Cpu from the market. It is worth the $2.00 = )
Scripts:
zipalign_apks
cpuinfo
blockads
How to use scripts:
Type the name into a adb shell or into a terminal emulator.
About BossMode:
Typing "BossMode" into adb shell or a terminal emulator will give access to and allow you to edit many parts of the system using any file manager.
For example, if you wish to delete system apps you can simply run "godmode", open Astro File Manager, long press the app, and delete it (don't forget to back it up first!). Also, if you wish to edit (using Astro) the build.prop, sysctl.conf, or install-recovery.sh files "BossMode" will allow you to do so. In short, "BossMode" can turn Astro File Manager into Root Explorer.Remember this is a beta so it might have a bug or two but nothing extreme. It will be out of beta next release.
Plans for V.5:
More scripts
Update Kernel
Tell me what you would like to see in the next version.

I would love to have Bluetooth mouse, keyboard and HDMI out all working and make this my Android pc. This phone is awesome!
I know Cyanogen has been working on Bluetooth option but they have yet to come out with a stabile rom. I have try a few nightly builds and there not bad.
I respect all rom developers for there time.
Thank you

voicemail?
I put this ROM on my Sprint EVO a few hours ago and just noticed that I no longer have anything for voicemail available under either apps or widgets other than Google Voice which I don't use.
What happened? I was already rooted and using the BakedSnack ROM but had problems with voicemail on that one too; apps were there but I never got notifications when I had messages. That was the whole reason I moved to this ROM. I wiped the unit first and followed all the steps to flash the new ROM.
What did I do wrong????

[ROM] midNIGHT ROM v5.2(BYOR Edition) Journaling ON RFS/EXT4 4/10/2011

Hey Everyone,
I need some help and you guys are just the people to do it. As you all know Autism Awareness is something very near and dear to my heart. In my never ending quest (in my newly discovered free time) to help spread awareness I listed my blog on a site called Picket Fence Blogs. VERY popular site. I need votes to keep me towards the top of the list. There aren't many Autism related blogs listed here and the more votes I get the more people will read my story and the more Autism Awareness is spread.
All you have to do is click this link. http://picketfenceblogs.com/vote/3616
When you click it you are voting for my Lost and Tired blog. It will tell you that you just voted for me. You can vote once a day. You can also vote from your vote as well (as it's a different IP address). Please feel free to share the link as you see fit. I don't get anything for ranking on this site accept sharing my story with more people.
Anyway, I would really appreciate your continued support for this cause. I'm trying to occupy my time since I haven't flashed a ROM is 2 days 23 hrs and 17 minutes...twitch...twitch
I would like to thank everyone for all the support I have received over the months I have been developing this ROM. Thank you all for taking on the challenge or spreading Autism Awareness. I can't explain what your support means to myself and my family.
Unfortunately, I'm announcing the end of the development for the midNIGHT ROM. It has become necessary to auction my Epic on ebay. I just got it replaced and haven't even activate it yet. My goal is to hopefully get enough to get our van fixed....again. We have MANY appointments and therapies for both my wife and kids that are out of town and on hold until I get the van back up and running. Emmett's speech therapy has been cut in half by insurance. His specialists have been trying to get him in 2 times a week as he has mod to severe language ad speech impairment. Now they won't even cover 3 times a month.
While I wish there was another way I feel good about being able to at least do this. I hope to still contribute to this community and really hope to be back at it at some point in the near future.
Thanks again to EVERYONE for ALL the support for both this ROM and most importantly Autism.
I want to say a special THANK YOU to ALL my testers. You have been AWESOME.
Thanks to the Bonsai team for everything and especially Randy for all his help and guidance.
Thanks to k0nane for being...well..k0nane. Thanks for being SO supportive and such a great example to this community.
If anyone is in the market for an Epic 4G. Check out my auction here. I have listed a BUY IT NOW price with a TON of EXTRAS. I'm also donating 10% of whatever I get to Northeast Ohio Autism Group.
Thanks again for everything and I'll be in touch. You can follow me at www.lostandtired.com. I may have some pretty big news in the near future. You can also follow me on twitter @lost_and_tired as well as @midnight_rom (for future announcements)

If your an advanced user or just want to take the time to flash one at a time or completely customize your phone then go for it. If you want to just have a "Standard Edition" you can just flash the midNIGHT ROM v5.2 Standard UPGRADE.zip" and you will be good to go. I have tested both versions. Both seem very stable and quick. Hopefully battery life is better since I removed a ton of background apps.

FYI: There is a HOW TO video for installing this ROM along with CW3 on my blog as well. Look on the Android Development page. Please keep in mind that the ROM being flashed in this video is not the v2.7 but the process is the exact same. Also I skipped the wipes prior to flashing to save time.

Really appreciate the work you do, said so with Paypal yesterday. ;-)
Could you list the "tweaks" that are absent from this build? Are these things like the TWS bug fix or reboot mod, etc.
Wow. That's really cool of you to look out for the minority group. Thanks

Noob question, what's the benefit of journaling?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Do some searches, and theres plenty on Journaling, or rather, the advantages of NO Jounaling. Basically, and someone correct me if I am wrong, Journaling is writing back data to cache so that if say your battery is removed, your phone locks up, you lose data. Its not the end of the world, but can be a pain in the ass some times. So basically, it comes down to personal preference, whether you want a little more speed from no journaling, or stability from having it. Honestly, in my experience, this has been a more noticeable issue that RFS vs. EXT4, although I think the option would be awesome too. It would be interesting to see, with a good base (hopefully EC05 turns out to be this) just how well a super with RFS would be...
Anyways, thanks again Rob, for working on this, if its not too hard to make these options available, it just takes your awesome BYOR that much farther...
ROM released. Blog and OP updated.
Great job Rob! Thank you. I greatly appreciate this.

Does this version have camera/camcorder low light lag fix? If not, how can I install the fix separately?
Hi ptfdmedic! Great rom. I've been using it since v3. I was curious, though, if you could point me towards the source for the kernel you're using. I'd like to apply the patch I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975611
in order to help alleviate my fast-typer issues. Any insight on how I can go about getting the source to recompile the kernel on my own? I don't want to make more work for you, so I'm willing to do so and give you the results, incase you want to offer both.

The kernel is bonsai. I didn't compile it. Visit www.bonsaigeek.com and I'm sure Randy would be able to point you in the right direction. I believe the kernel itself already has the patch applied.
Guys let me clarify this. The kernel is the bonsai kernel will the bonsai tweaks applied, NCIQ, Camera lag and keyboard fix but not the configurable one. What. Did was remove everything that was happening during the flash. This stopped the journaling from being turned off and the file system from being forced to EXT4.

Tested it at 1.2 OC with stock voltages and went to 10 different sites including youtube with no lockups. Honestly seems to run smooth.
Not saying a lockup cant happen but did not on me.
Just a suggestion. You might wanna rename the file for version delineation.
i.e. Dark&Sinister1.1.zip or something. I know 1.0 was EagleBlood.zip.

Here is a fix just extract the files then use root explorer to push to /system/usr/keylayout/ over-writing the files there.

Guys I don't have time to re-theme this for each users taste. If you don't like the style then either redo it or don't use it. Sorry if that is rude but I am one person.
Maybe later I will redo more themes.
But I think eb 1.04 froyo themes will work on this just do a backup incase.

I agree, please continue to work on development and theme it as you like. We can change it on our own, using themes or metamorph.
PS. Random theme question: Where r the notification dropdown images located? Im used to Samsung's Touchwiz, which keeps them in /system/framework/twframework-res.apk but I know that file doesnt exist for "stock" builds? Are they in framework-res.apk or SystemUI.apk?
Thanks!
Real nice rom so far. Appreciate all the hard work.
