Anyone know if the Desire S has a signed boot loader? - HTC Desire S

i've been eagerly waiting for its release, then somebody dropped a bombshell re the Incredible having a signed boot loader -- pretty much a death sentence to loading custom roms right?
i noticed that the leaked ROMs have a "signed" phrase at the end -- does that mean it has a signed boot loader?
tia. If this really is the norm for the newer phones, it is quite disturbing indeed(from HTC of all manufacturers). We might even see a rush to buy the older phones since they don't have this signed nonsense.

if this is true then we are talking for something that changes the game...
signed of bootloaders are not a good sign...
just hope not...

Id say it would, the incredible s does.
Sent from my Defy

It probably have, but the latest news is that some Chinese guy cracked it.... Waiting for the instructions!
This means that the desire s will probably be able to be cracked the same way. But we will see.

that "old" samsung galaxy S sitting at the store display window is looking reeeally good right now...

bumping thread

i think the devs will be able to crack it
dont worry

Root the desire?

I consider buying this phone. But I don't want to before it's rooted. Thought we could discuss it here. Or is it delivered open?

Yesterday I was searching for the direct quote from Paul (modaco) regarding this; at least I think it was him who said this...
Basically, unless I made this up in my head, he (if it were him) stated that the oem unlock functionality built into the bootloader has been removed.
Of course this is all speculative until I can find that damn quote
I strongly doubt that this has the same oem unlock features as the Nexus. The OEM unlock is most likely only requested by Google, and I do not think that HTC will do the same thing. It would be awesome, no doubt about it, but hey, lets be realistic.
I guess we'll just have to wait until the device gets sent out to review.

Guess you're right. Hope there will be some kind of exploit we can use. Or a leaked RUU with eng SPL or anything.
Do we know who is going to root / make a custom rom for it?

I think (and hope) someone will manage to root it, unless it's delivered open. But at the moment we don't know.
Altoguh, I've heard that it's using the same radio and hboot as Nexus One. Therefore, they should be able to use the same ROMs.
hey it's almost 100% that it will be rooted! is there anything in the world of computers that is not hacked ??? if it's not like the same day of it's release like the nexus (which was even before its release) it will be rooted in some days!!!

I just hope that it's not that every good developer have bought Nexus One, and therefore doesn't bother trying to root the Desire.
i don't think so, as every enthusiast will try to have this phone. Also i see many "hackers" being involved in more than two or even three mobile phones very often in this forum so we hold our chance
This should prove to be interesting to watch unfold...
random thoughts...
-The usual suspects seem to be fully wrapped up in Nexus development. Hard not to be with such a fun device What does this mean for the desire? Not sure.
-oem unlock appears to not be present in the desire's rom. if the desire is built on the same everything else (with sense on top) as the nexus, which has not bee rooted any other way beyond oem unlock, I'm not sure how someone will circumvent the lockdown. Perhaps without oem unlock, people will be forced to get creative? *shrug*
-The desire's rom works on the nexus; to me this says one thing...there is little->no reason for anyone with an n1 to look into a desire as long as desire images keep leaking.
All random thoughts but it would seem that possibly the desire may wind up being a consumer product rather than a hobbyist product...only time will tell though
I hope it will be more then a consumer product. The reaseon I'm buying the desire is that it will be released in belgium the nexus one isn't.
Yeah, I'm intrigued about this too- ordered an HTC Desire earlier today for delivery beginning of April, but no idea if i'll be able to root it and stick a Nexus rom on it!
Will be keeping an eye on these threads, just about to pre-order the Desire.
Hi guys
preordered one too, coming from a Touch HD. Til now on the online shop I ordered its stated to arrive at the end of march. Hope they can hold this date. Cant wait to see this device beeing rooted

hmm, I really want a snapdragon+ phone with sense on t-mobile usa. or even just a snapdragon one that is for consumers.
It needs time, I think. Because it´s not to buy, I mean before the HTC Hero came out, do we know it has root? NO When it´s out it needs a little time, and we have root believe me.
sorry for my bad english
I have a few questions, i want to buy a htc desire but i come from winmo world so i don't understand everything...
If the phone doesn't get rooted...
-will it be still possible to install .apk directly on the phone ?
-will it be still possible to upgrade 'operators' roms to official or cooked roms ?

Nexus
I've got the Nexus One, and just wanted to point out a few things (from my perspective)
The Nexus one runs Desire / Sense - BUT flash in the camera is bad, and so is bluetooth. (I used to have a HTC Magic, running HTC Hero / Sense on it, never really worked as good as my friends Hero, so history repeats itself - even with my friend selling his Hero to buy a Desire
So there are a difference in the hardware
the Nexus was rooted very fast, but this is because Google intended the phone to be rooted, this is Google behavior, and clearly not HTC behavior.
I don't see why a developer finding a root method in the Nexus without using the google "practices" to root, would publish their findings for the Nexus, so there might be a couple of ways to root the Desire right when it comes out.
thats just my 2 cents. (For what they were worth)

The EVO 3D will be shipped with a LOCKED bootloader! Bad news for sensation

HTC spent the day with Paul on friday to show him the EVO 3d.
He asked them if it will be shipped with unlocked bootloader. Here is what he tweeted this morning:
"Of course, I asked HTC whether the phone was expected to ship with an unlocked bootloader and in truth, the answer was a little troubling - "The Evo 3D was in development before the open bootloader decision was made and as such we aren't sure as yet whether the device will ship initially with an unlocked bootloader or this will follow later". Not good enough HTC!"
Very disappointing indeed

that's the key right there.
we will get it. (crosses fingers)
If Microsoft said that all future versions of Windows would come with a free option to edit the registry (ok so bad example) and then released Windows 8 without this feature purely because it was already in development - they would be thrown to the wolves.
I have no doubt we will see the unlocked bootloader for the Sensation and EVO3D, but Chou has already lied to his customers.
So very disappointed..I doubt i won't buy htc phones if it also comes with a locked bootloader.

On the contrary I see that as good news for HTC Sensation.
HTC say they are still working on developing it and preparing all the policies and stuff, so it makes sense if it's still not fully ready for any device, even the EVO 3D.
Let's see when will that happen and how it will be rolled out.
Come on HTC, it's taking too long already!!!

What's not good enough? The fact that HTC have said that the device will either ship with an unlocked bootloader or recieve an update at a later date? How did you interpret that any other way? Very misleading post. Sick of people saying "not good enough" "hurry up". Give them time! They have communicated through various official channels that both devices will recieve an unlocked bootloader one way or another.

The big issue is that they should already have it out. There is absolutely no reason that they can't modify HBOOT and release a RUU - probably would take them no more than an hour worth of work since they already have the keys and don't have to go through the hassle that we have been going through rooting their devices lately with goldcards and crap.

Wish in one hand, **** in the other...
HTC has a long history of pulling B/S - a perfect example was the lack of graphics drivers for the Imageon processor that was in the Mogul, Touch, and Touch Pro and the artificially-forced 30FPS on the EVO...
I'm losing faith in HTC altogether.

Don't you think there's a little more work involved with rolling out an update for one of their flagship devices? Development and testing aside I would imagine there being a fair amount of legal wrangling between themselves and the various carrier in different countries. Just be patient, they have moved from a position of having locked to unlocked due to pressure from the community. For that I am thankful. Enough of the moaning and knee jerk hysteria.

You really think that T-Mobile USA would object to an unlocked bootloader when their other flagship was the G2x that was by far the easiest phone to root that I've ever owned.
I understand the legal crap but they've had plenty of time to flesh out the bootloader unlock... they should have been starting on it before the device even launched since the decision was made before it launched to unlock devices going forward.
Whatever, I'll wait for it until I can't anymore and then I guess its back to the G2x and hoping and praying LG fixes it soon.

What a terrible example.... How often does a new version of windows come out? Every few years.....
How often does an HTC phone come out? Every few weeks, or days sometimes... The Sensation and E3D had already been assembled and packaged by the time their policy about bootloaders changed. They said the phones will get an unlocked bootloader. I'm sure they will roll it out with some updates for this bug-plagued device. HTC has dozens of models to maintain and dozens more to create. Give them a damn second to get their ducks in a row.

Hehehe....funny stuff.
Seems like this actually affects peoples day.... In a negative way.
A month for some people must be an agonizing event.... If it hasn't come in few months....then start to ask why.... Until then....enjoy life.
I have to say that I don't think it would be that hard for them to just release a unoock. But at same time it might be harder then we think.
I can confirm the Evo third-D has a locked boot loader. I have tested both the sensation and the third-D side by side.
I do have to say though, I think we (xda devs) will crack it long before HTC releases the official unlock.

No they wouldn't object but everything still has to be drawn up in formal contracts or amendments etc etc. This has to be coordinated in X number of countries with X number of carriers and suppliers, in other words a bit of a ballache.
The devices had effectively been launched. If they had decided to do this pre the OFFICIAL launch then it would have probably resulted in delays, definitely not an acceptable option for a company the size of htc.
They said they are working on it so let's just wait and see if they honour their promise of unlocked bootloaders. Everything I have read so far suggests that they will.

What could be more relevant??? If you had your way and this phone was released with an unlocked BL, none of us would have a Sensation right now, as they'd be busy opening each individual package, getting into the phone, unlocking the BL, repackaging, resealing, returning to the stores, then releasing. Thank goodness more sound minds than a few here are in charge at HTC.
Have our devices a month with a locked bootloader before we get the unlock, or wait another month without the phone to see it released with the bootloader already unlocked? hmmmm...

I think people are forgetting how many times HTC promised to release drivers for their lag-plagued Mogul, Touch, Touch Pro, and the GSM variants of said devices - to never see it actually come to fruition.
HTC just likes to say things to shut people up.

[Poll] Returning my HTC Sensation

I decided to also make this post a poll. Will you return your HTC Sensation?
For everyone that is frustrated with the bootloader, you may want to follow suit. Don't hang onto this phone past your return policy time if you will be unhappy if it's not unlocked.
HTC haven't been able to definitively say "Yes we are unlocking the bootloader for the HTC Sensation." It seems all articles and re-posts that claim this will happen are quoting vague references and canned responses. I personally emailed them (as have many) to ask if it will be unlocked and all responses are (paraphrased) "We cannot say if it will be, but keep watching our media channels - facebook, twitter, etc". I went as far as trying to escalate to corporate (politely) and they were still unable to confirm if the HTC Sensation would or would not be unlocked.
So far zero confirmation. That's also zero confirmation on the reverse - they haven't definitively said they won't either. Grid lock.
What *has* been confirmed is that future devices will sport an unlocked bootloader. I'm willing to wait for this! This does not include the HTC Sensation or recent EVO.
I am returning my HTC Sensation to the store with 1 week left on my 30 day return policy. If they manage to deliver an unlocked bootloader between now and when the next device comes out I will gladly re-purchase the phone as the hardware and experience have been fantastic. Unfortunately being a fellow tweaker, I too want the ability to use custom roms and especially not be locked to a manufacturer's release schedule for Android updates. I went through too many let downs using a locked Motorola Android phone and will no longer be supporting locked devices full stop. Android is meant to help us be free of certain restrictions imposed by other operating systems and carriers.
I'm willing to wait for a non-bootloader locked phone with killer specs.
Sadly returning the device for now. Feel free to let us all know if you will also be, or have already returned your phone in hopeful anticipation of a completely open device.
Cheers all!
As I have said..You all are misinformed. As it was told to me was the bootloader unlocking tool will be a part of the htc dev tools site that will be launching soon. I suggest you relax, keep your phone and see how it goes. Not that serious to start a revolution over. Especially when it can be coming any day now.
No problems. I can handle the flames, but also understand that people are sick of this. We can close this thread.
holding onto the phone may not be viable if there is fear that we won't be getting bootloaders unlocked. I have a limited time frame for when I can return this phone...

I am also in the late stages of deciding to return the Sensation. It is a wonderful phone but many issues and no real answer about unlocking the bootloader(actual and factual info about when -where- and how.)and no word about updates and whether or not they will fix all of the issues. I am only speaking for me but I find it increasingly harder to keep and support a device that has numerous documented issues with no announced plan to fix them from HTC and nothing about unlocking the bootloader, except vague promises.. I also would like the link to the thread about dev tools.
If you're that sad that a locked bootloader is going to make you return your phone then you need to get out more. Get over it and just wait
No it's a great phone and works, with a few quirks, great. We already have received an update after one month so in 2-3 months we will receive the next update which will update the phone to a bug free heaven.
Besides, it's already possible to disable apps so I'm going to install Launcher Pro as soon as I'm bored with Sense. Have used Sense for 2 years on my Hero so I will survive.
This phone gonna be out g2x here i come .

You knew this phone had a locked bootloader when you bought it. It's funny how everyone is *****ing about it when they damn well knew it was locked. And what? Since HTC didnt release the unlocked bootloader a few weeks after the phone launches that's too long? Do I want my bootloader unlocked? HELL YEAH! Am I going to sit here and ***** and moan about it because HTC hasnt unlocked it yet? NO, because I knew I was buying a phone with a locked bootloader when I bought it. HTC Has said they will unlock the bootloader, they just didnt give an exact date as to when it would be unlocked. Even if HTC changes their minds, someone will get it unlocked eventually. Just look at the G2! That's never been officially unlocked..
I'm really tired of seeing all these posts with people *****ing about the bootloader.. YOU KNEW THIS WHEN YOU BOUGHT THE PHONE.. so 1. Dont buy the effing phone until it's unlocked or 2. stop *****ing that it's locked and just be patient!!! It's quite SIMPLE..
People knew it was locked but we also had the impression it would get unlocked that's the main reason people bought it. From what we hear htc aint unlocking **** , point blank they could of just told people its not going to be unlocked on Facebook and just ended it there instead of keeping hope alive. OMG! really? what you hear must be different from what the rest of us hear, because judging on what I read in the forums they tell everyone the same thing. They are committed to what they said and they are working on getting it going. The phone hasnt even been out for a full month yet and so many of you are crying foul on HTC's part. When I spoke to someone there, they said yes they did get a memo about informing them about the new policy. She told me the newer phones (released in late summer/early fall) will come shipped with unlocked bootloaders and they were working on an update for both the sensation and evo3d(which at the time I spoke to her wasnt even released yet). She told me the techs think it's going to be a nightmare for them because of all the noobs bricking their devices. I'm sure they already have S-off ready but right now they are trying to figure out the best way to implement it. Just because they didnt unlock it in the first 4 weeks of release doesnt mean they lied! People need to have patience. I mean they have to figure out how they are going to do it and also brace themselves and be ready for tons of noobs calling in saying they ****ed up their device. There is more to it than "hey it's ready push it out"
For example, will it be a OTA update? I think they will try to not make it so easy so every tom **** and harry could **** up their phone. Will we have to call in and request it special? will we have to send our devices into HTC and have them unlock it for us? I'm sure the logistics are what they are working on now. But how you get they are lying from all the info people have gotten is amazing. They keep saying they are standing behind it, and that there will be a update of some kind to unlock it. The only thing they havent told us is WHEN. And if they did give us a date and then couldnt make the deadline then you would be saying the same ****, that they lied and would prob be even more pissed off. I honestly dont see it happening until late aug or sept. But I'm sure by then one of us devs will break it or get a leaked Hboot

I guess you are referring to the G2x? It does have Froyo stock but I hear CM7 got a lot more stable for it(I'm going to try it again). I run Faux's GB rom on my G2x. and it's pretty stable for me.
The ram issue? Sure the G2x has only 512 but I NEVER had a time when I didnt have at least 90-100mb of free ram and that's when everything I use is open and running in the background. Someone once said if you have that much available ram at all times even when you open everything up then it's pretty much wasted ram. When I got the G2x I came from the MT4G and I was REALLY concerned about having 768 and having to go to 512. But Cyanogen himself when he got the g2x said the 512 of ram was perfectly fine and there were no issues with it having only 512. When I read that I felt better about making the switch. And yes it does have less ram than the sensation but at this point and time my G2x blows my sensation out of the water speed and performance wise. I love my sensation and cant wait until we can see what this thing can really do
You guys are nitpicking about something you already knew about. So what does that make u?
I still got the phone knowing what I was getting. I came from the g2x and the nexus s and I don't regret getting rid of both.
The bootloader will be unlocked. We have root now and overclock so take that and have fun with it. Stop being impatient. This isn't the Atrix I'm sure it won't take that long lol.

If u want it that bad....start developing the unlock yourself or sit down and Stfu.

Exactly! If the XDA app had a thanks button I'd be hitting it right now

[Q] Sensation (z710e) doesn't have hboot - any help welcome!!

Hi Guys,
New to flashing the Sensation, though I've done my HD2 a good few times.
Girlfriend just bought a Sensation and I'm eager to flash a decent ROM to it but failing at the first hurdle.
From what I can tell, there is no HBOOT but instead it has uboot (forgive me if this sounds ridiculous).
When I use Power+Volume Down, I do not get a white screen with options and information but instead get a black screen. There's no sign of an HBOOT version, but there is a uboot version number.
If I press Power +Volume Up I am sent to a recovery mode, but I don't think it's CWM.
If I try to use Revolutionary, it finds the phone (in normal mode, not h/u boot) and says that the phone is not supported.
Phone was bought in China but I think it is a Euro model (T Mobile branding on top of phone)
There is a possibility that a ROM has already been flashed onto it - but it sucks, and I want her to get the best from her new phone.
Also, I cannot get the CID or MID number. Tried CID getter, neither of them were on there. Tried terminal emulator, no response from getprop ro.cid or ro.mid.
So even if I wanted to upgrade the firmware, I am unsure which one to use!!
Has anyone run into this sort of situation? Using SuperTool I was able to get root access, which is at least a step in the right direction but I'm not sure how to proceed. Maybe it's already s-off and I can update the firmware and thus get hboot. But if it's not, then I run the risk of ruining it.
If you think I can go ahead and try to install new firmware, without risk of bricking or semi bricking, then I would probably be inclined to go for it.
Looking around here and also on Google, I haven't seen anyone with the same issue, so any help you can give would be very welcome!!
Many thanks in advance,
Mr Al
two possibilities: your sensation is faked or it has been relocked by the sellor which is called "baikamumaji".

Thanks for that, although it's slightly bad news!!
I'll see if we can get in touch with the seller and take it from there.
Ok, we've just spoken (online) with the sellers 'tech' guy.
I think pmbldc is right, it's a fake.
Their guy says that it can be flashed, but only using the roms on their forum.
I think it's bull. Currently feeling ripped off and unhappy, but what can I do?!?!
Never buy any more devices from China??? Jus sayin... Sorry you got ripped off bro.. Sucks that that sort of thing happens...
Haha! A little tricky that one, as I live in China!
I've bought lots of electronics over here, both locally branded/produced and international. Lots of successes.
To be fair (grudgingly) this guy was considerably cheaper than everyone else. That old adage of 'if something seems too good to be true, it is' applies very well in this case.
Pretty disgusted with the whole thing, the conversation my girlfriend had with the 'tech' guy was ridiculous. Both she and I work in tech so his usual line of BS didn't work with us.
So now, having decided to be sensible and not buy the HTC One X, we're going to end up spending about the same amount of money anyway!
All we can do is learn from our mistakes, and at least now I know what to look for when buying a Sensation!!!!
True Story, bro

What is the likelihood of a 2.2 root?

Hey guys,
I know there are plenty of people working on finding a method for root, it's difficult, not trying to ask when it's going to be or why it's taking so long. I'm just wondering if it will even be possible, given HTC doesn't ever unlock the phone themselves. I love the One X, just got it and I think it's great, but I know that I'm going to eventually want to install MIUI or CM, and since my phone has 2.2 there's basically no way to do that right now.
Reading through some of the dev/think tank threads, I've read a couple of comments alluding to the idea that it might be impossible unless HTC unlocks it, and that they might not. Seems contrary to what I've seen in the past, pretty much every phone I or my friends have had got cracked at some point. Still, if it's not going to be possible ever, I might want to return my phone and switch it out for the SGS3 or some other.
I tried to Google for unrootable android phones and couldn't find any. However the percentage of devices using ics is very small and the only ones that have root as far as I can tell all have unlocked bootloaders.
It's very difficult to remain positive but I'm trying.

Y'all are so impatient!
Like any security, it just takes enough careful effort and determination to defeat. As great as the One X is, I have no doubt there will be enough of both to get this done. :good:

I don't have the technical expertise to really say. But just from experience, I can say that HTC has been desperately trying to lock down their phones for over 2 years (maybe longer, that is justs when I jumped into the Android game) with some pretty sophisticated safeguards, and the phones have still been rooted, often very quickly. I don't think HTC has magically gotten better at securing their devices, to the point that the phone is now impossible to root. In particular, our device was rooted (1.73 firmware) something like 3 days after it was released, even with the locked bootloader and all the security that HTC could throw on it at the time. Its just my feeling that its really doubtful that HTC can go from that point, to making the device impossible to root in the matter of a few months..
Seen this new root method here on xda, any idea if compatible with our 1X?
