[Q] One Quick Question! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!! <3
I recently lost my Vibrant in chicago, being drunk in a taxi. So I recently picked up a Nexus S. I'm coming from a Vibrant with TeamWhiskey's Bionix and some kernels like Overclock, DoW, etc...
I figured the best route to take on the Nexus S is CM7 right now, so i'm wondering if people are using any overclock kernels with CM7? Anything stable?
I got some reading to do, but thank you for the quick response

Netarchy and morfic both have oc kernels out right now. Morfics is called honity and has a 1.2ghz version and a 1.4 ghz version. Netarchy is oc up to 1.4 I believe. Both have voodoo color and sound built in. Honity has backlight notification as well. Netarchy will include bln when neldar officially releases it. These are the most popular. Netarchy is the most stable IMO bc I can't get honity to boot on cm7 build 28 lol. Hope this helps.

+1 for Netarchy's kernels. He releases updates in a timely fashion and they're well done.
Neither kernels should disappoint you though, try both and see which one fits you.
And welcome to the Nexus S forum.

Thanks guys, <3!!

Favorite ROMS and kernels

Just curious about what ROMS and kernels people have liked best so far.

Right now I am devoted to using the Das_BAMF series of ROMs as well as the kernel by Adrynalyne. I find it works very well for what I need.
I like debloated stock personally, using my own kernel.

me too. staying with this until CM7 comes out.
I'll definitely be switching to cyanogenmod when it is complete, much prefer it to anything else.
Das_BAMF, perfect for me so far.
Das BAMF as well with the 1.76ghz kernel. It's a beast.
boLTEd 0.3. Drods 1.8 kernel running like a champ.

Virusrom, testing out several kernals using adrynalyne 2.0 ATM. Liking it. Better battery life than running OC'd all the time. Bolts still quick at 768mhz. Mo Batry!
Tbolt - VirusRom_rc1b2-drod1.8ghz
Das bamf with the newest kernel 1228 on CPU perfect light OC.
Tbolt seems even more snappy, battery seems to be better also with smartass CPU setting.
My first Android my first ROM and kernel and I could not be happier.
Ive been rocking Virus Rom also for like a week. Extremely solid rom with Adrenalines 2.0 kernel.

Running boLTEd .35 and the 1.8 kernel, drod is a solid dev. I was with him on the dx. And will stick with him on the thunderbolt. If you want speed and stability drod and b16 is where it will likely be.

Amen to that.
1.3.2 with the 1.2ghz smartass kernel is a dream.
Perfect storm and drods 1.5 kernel. I got liquid sense on the sdcard but Havnt tried it. I'm probably the only person who likes recent apps in the pulldown lol. Kinda limits my Rom choices.

ok, ya i have tried most of the roms and i really like bamfs rom, i have tried the 1.8 ghz kernel and 1.2 right now. i'm just interchanging the kernels with roms right now to find a good combo of speed and battery, but i'm definitely going to get cm7 when its released

Best CM7 kernel

Just got a nexus s and was wondering what's the best OC kernel for cyanogenmod looking at Trinity right now.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Hard to say a specific one. Each user has different taste. Every device can't handle over clock and if it does not as high as another. There are undervolted ones too but the same premise applies. There a jame bond kernel that is very close to stock with some added feature.
I have been using Netarchy's kernel and I like it a lot. Although I haven't tried anything else though.
In my perspective, Trinity is more stable on higher clock speeds than netarchy. That's just me though.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
I've tried the last few Netarchy builds (all CFS) and I've recently moved to the Trinity 1.44 kernel and find it much more stable

What rom/kernal do you use and why?

Just started flashing roms onto my nexus s, wondering what others people are using. Specify if it's nexus s or nexus s 4g!(Links if you want to be fancy)
Nexus S running the latest version of NSCollab (in conjunction with Netarchy Kernel)....why? Cause its Vanilla Android, Fast and the most stable ROM I've used. And I've used quite a few of them.
NS4G and i swap between Stock Deodexed, Deck, and MIUI with nandroid backups (i easily get bored).
Always use Net's kernel, mostly CFS stable (best battery IMO), if streaming alot i go BFS for a day.
What: Manually compiled AOSP with a lil' bit modded kernel (voodoo color, ext4 mount option, read ahead buffer, etc.)
Why: Because that's the reason I bought Nexus S -- to be able to play around anyway I like

Well it's more of why do you feel that the rom is better then an other ie:battery, looks, speed
Cyanogenmod and Netarchy BFS kernals. Amazing battery life. Voodoo colors is great. My phone runs like a dream. I've tried a lot of other roms but they just don't cut it for me.
I also use that mod from these forums that replaces ADW in CM7 with the stock Gingerbread launcher. Its like a dream come true.

Liquid 2.0 with Trinity UV kernel. Polished. Functionalities of CM7, theme Chooser, stable, and best battery life even with a little OC.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029118
I'm using CM7 Nightly Builds with Netarchy 1.3.4 CFS. Because its stable, fast and awesome. CM7 Is a no brainer. Why use anything else? I've tried many kernels and Netarchy is the best so far. I don't bother overclocking.. tried it and I don't see enough of a gain to deal with instability or possible instability.

OpenSoju
Using OpenSoju atm. http://renandroid.com/.
It uses the netarchy Linux kernel 2.6.35.13.
Very small, super awesomely quick and open source.

I'm also using nscollab. Its pretty stable

Just ridiculously fast, smooth as butter, and stable as hell.
I came from a souped up Incredible to this phone, and it's been an eye opener. So glad I jumped.
Oxygen 2.1.4.
It's fastest ROM I ever used on Nexus S and have many big and small improvements compared to stock ROM.

NSCollab is built on CM7 rather than vanilla android.
I used NSCollab before as well. Currently running ZuluGen as my daily driver though. Switched over cause I liked the theming of Zulugen more. They both running CM7 with some minor tweaks here and there though, so basically performance wise I haven't really noticed much difference between the two.
As for kernels have stuck with netarchy for the most part, has been amazingly stable and fast for me, and seems to be one of the only kernels with voodoo drivers kept updated frequently.
I use htc clay personal its a remix of nightly 104 from cm7 but with nets 1.3.4 bfs quad scores of 3500 oc to 1.3 with 31hrs on a single charge.

Same. I come from a Hero, a device I rooted to make it look and behave as much as possible like a Nexus S. Now that I have one, I'm in heaven. It's rooted, but I have only ever rooted my old phones to mock the stock Android experience.
It's fast enough for me and I have no reason to flash anything when it's already capable of doing everything an Android can do.
CM7 nightly.
Hmm... 3500 quadrant score without OC?
ya...
CyanogenMod 7.0.3 with Netarchy kernel
It's OK most of the time, sometimes freezes/FCs randomly though.

Best *Gingerbread* kernel.

I'm not feeling ics,.. so being a caveman living in the olden days of gingerbread, I'd like to know what you guys think is the best kernel. And post a link, because I have no computer and xda search sucks on the app. I need performance .. I'd like to be able to play games like shadow gun and gta 3, that aren't optimized for my phone (using chainfire of course) the best they possibly can. I've heard alot of good about Franco's, but I'm on matr1x right now. Thanks guys
PS. I'd like something with ezekeels mods. A gingerbread GLaDOS seems like it'd be perfect.. thanks again

Here's the list sorted by my preferences:
* franco.Kernel build 8 DEC is my daily driver. Fast. Smooth. Comes with almost every features in GLaDOS. The preset Voodoo Color settings is also pretty sweet.
* GLaDOS 1.12 is packed with all Ezekeel's mods. It is very stable though IMHO is not as smooth as franco's. It supports Voodoo Color as well, but there is no preset in the kernel. The bootscreen is also pretty cool Unfortunately, there is no link to GB version in the OP anymore.
* Matr1x - You're already using it. (Sorry I was confused between this and Trinity in the first place because their names are both related to The Matrix >_<) Full with mods and tweaks for performance. Fast and very stable. For me, it's performance is very close to franco's.
* Peter Alfonso's 2.6.35.14 kernel is one of the most stable kernel I've tried. If you don't want deep idle, touch wake, etc. This one will give you stability, battery life, and performance with the feel of nearly stock kernel.
* Trinity Comes with pre-configured UV/OC of your choice. There's nothing wrong with it. I just don't like its bootscreen and the 666 thing in build number
NOTE: Other kernels that are not listed here means I haven't tried it yet. Not that it's not good or anything
Could you give me the link yo Franco's..? And does Franco's support the proton voltage app
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
The links to each kernel are in my first post. Just click on the kernel names.
I use NSTools to config the mods/OC/UV but I guess Proton Voltage should also work fine
The only one with the link is peters

You could be a tad less lazy and click on the links suksit gave you. Franco has a link to his GB kernel near the end of the first post.
Ezekeel does not support GB anymore, but if you search the thread with the search tool (oh my!) you'll easily find more than one link to it uploaded by members.
Sorry but I'm too poor for a computer, and search on the xda app is complete crap -.-

Most kernels are taking the step to ICS,
But for Gingerbread, I should go for Peter Alfonso's kernel (most stability, nice battery life).
If you want some more performance, go for SG-11UV of steve.garon, this was my daily driver on Gingerbread,
because I needed BLN, BLX, etc, and it comes with a standard 1,1GHz overclock.
I have no time to upload links, so sorry for that.

[Q] recommended kernel ?

HI guys
Im currently using MIUI US Rom ver 2.4.6 with stock kernel. can anyone recommend me a fast and stable kernel compatible with this rom?
Will these do the trick?
I've heard only good things about Trinity, but I stopped using MIUI a long time ago, it's pretty outdated at this point.
I personally use the Trinity kernel when running MIUI but some prefer Faux123's kernel. It tends to be you choose which ever one is the most stable for your phone as not all are created equal. The other thing to note is that if you flash the kernel straight from morfic it will cause you to loose the ability to set themes and keep them after a reboot.
I have the modified Trinity Kernels that you can get to try and they both are flashable from CWM and have the theme fixes.
They are both found here >>Trinity Kernel<<
If you want to know the difference between them go to morfics thread and the explanations are there.
thanks for the elaborated explanation and the Trinity builds. but what stability lose am i to experience? i flashed 4 hours ago ELP build and i have no problems with the themes.
You aren't necessarily going to experience stability issues. It is just a possibility you could. If you aren't then you will be fine.
I do suggest that you get setcpu so you can set the clock speed to the 1.1ghz that the kernel wants to default to but the os pushes it down to 1.0. But it is not a nessecity.

The Destroyer
I would use The Destroyer16. I've seen many MIUI G2x's run stable and decent battery life (with a little UV) with this kernel. Plus 1.6ghz max will rip benchmark scores like crazy. Only good for gb 2.3.7 MIUI IMO. You can find it in the huge Trinity thread under g2x development.

dont do this unless you know what your doing. it works on any CM7 based rom, but its very unstable and really only used for testing and benchmarking.
