Okay, I've got an HD2 fresh out of the box and running like a dream that someone wants to trade a samsung vibrant for. This HD2 runs froyo great and with a disabled G sensor I've got all the quirks out (minus the G sensor of course) I just wanted to see what you'd go with, sadly I know samsung hasnt been so good about keeping their phones updated and that is the one thing that makes me hesitant (okay not the one thing, the screen and processing power certainly help) and I'm just looking for opinions from other nerds
Keep the HD2. It runs Android pretty fast as well as Windows Mobile. Oh, and the HD2's Android port already has 2.2 with Flash support

I thought that too but I'm eligible for upgrade in 4 months so which would retain value better
I'm biased towards HTC so I'd say stick with the option to dual boot. But if you want a true Android experience then definitely try the Vibrant.

I just want to know which will retain value more since I am eligible for upgrade (to whatever the best phone is at that time) in 4 months and I want it to still be sellable, I'd do the vibrant but I know how iffy they are on their upgrades, I was a sad owner of a behold 2
ive used both and ive loved android from my g1 days! like a poster said above if you want the true android experience get the vibrant. its only a matter of time before roms start dropping. the screen is prettier then the hd2 and lets face it ... no matter what you do to windows mobile it still sucks! sorry guys !

how is the screen prettier? I must ask I didnt know anything about that really... i just know it feels cheap and plasticky and none of the specs are as good as hd2 with android
i have the hd2 with android and i also have a vibrant. now before anything get says ive never been a fan of wm! in my opinion the vibrant is a better phone. if you want android get an android phone. not a phone with " windows mobile" then flash android on there! the samsung also has a higher resloution screen and it actually works in the sunlight. and the battery life on the hd2 is HORRENDOUS and thats being nice. i average about 10,000 texts a month and over 3000 minutes and the hd2 would crap out on me in 4 hours flat! im all for buying spare batteries and such and i really wish i could say i had a good experience with the hd2 but besides the big screen the phone serves as a good paper weight
but in what way is the HD2 worse than this as an android phone? theres the G sensor yeah but were like 4 steps away from calibrating that and defeating the issue and the hardware is quite obviously better...
Speaking strictly on hardware I think the HD2 is the winner. The Vibrant doesn't feel too well put together. The hardware was what made me get the HD2 over the Behold 2 and other phones being offered in April.
Software speaking I wish I'd never gotten the HD2. Maybe that's just my experience. But as soon as I saw that you could run Android from the HD2 the phone was new again. But right now while I want a true Android experience I'm gonna till Sept for the newest offerings rather than get the Samsung.

so I guess the general consensus is the HD2, i mean with an HD2 running android it seems theres really no competition from my standpoint, I really dont see much longevity in the galaxy S series either, i mean they still havent updated to froyo...

OTHER than the horrendous battery life?
both run a 1ghz cpu i also thought i read the gpu was better on the vibrant as far as screen yea its.3 inches smaller but it has gorilla glass which is stronger than the hd2 and the hd2 is 480 X 800 WVGA where the vibrant is 480 x 800 Super AM-OLED battery life on the vibrant is great and is true android dont get me wrong hd2 is great but it depends on personal preference
They're both excellent phones. The HD2's screen is large and immersive, and with some tweaking and researching, HD2 would be near-perfect according to today's standards of phones. Samsung vibrant is just as good, but the screen isn't as large. However, the quality of the Vibrant's screen is amazing. Again, both great phones, definitely some of the best that T-Mobile has to offer right now.

They have the same 800x480 screen res. Battery life has gotten better with new builds, I'm averaging a solid 12 hrs of heavy use. The HD2 feels better, looks better and is made better than that ugly plastic samsung thing.
And also..last time I checked no one is trying to put winmo on their phone.... Get the vibrant! And you wouldn't get 12 hours out of any phone with heavy use! Stop your ****!

Vibrant has a faster processor (Hummingbird > Snapdragon), more graphics power, better quality screen (Super AMOLED), and runs Android out of the box. I have an Epic 4G and coming from the regular AMOLED on my Samsung Moment I notice a HUGE difference. The Galaxy S screens are just amazing.
All Galaxy S phones (Vibrant, Captivate, Epic 4G, and Fascinate) will get FroYo by early October, and likely Gingerbread by March/April of next year.
If you want the extra .3 inches in screen real estate get the HD2, if you want the newer, more powerful device get the Vibrant.
Im currently using a MyTouch 4G and my return period is about to end. On Dec 3. So i can't keep one and wait for the other.
Should i return it for a Nexus S, which is said to release on Dec 6, or should i keep it.
For this post im assuming the rumors of the Orion processor are true
I bet many of you have this question in mind,

As a prior Vibrant owner (we all know about the Galaxy S fiasco), I won't be purchasing any more Samsung phones, regardless of what their specs are rumored to be. HTC, on the other hand, definitely makes solid phones. Even Motorola has produced some impressive offerings over the course of the year (Droid X, Droid 2).
If you're really considering the Nexus S, I highly suggest considering Samsung's reputation and basing your decision on their past missteps. After the disaster with Behold II and Galaxy S, what's to say they won't release another lemon?

This really is one thing i should consider
I like the MT4G, but it seems to be lacking dev support. I was not happy with the vibrant (lag, gps, battery life, etc.) therefore I have mixed feelings regarding the nexus s just and a little weary because samsung is making it.

I'm currently in the same dilemma. I've got until wednesday to remorse my mytouch out. So far, I've been quite happy with the mytouch. I feel like I'd be happy keeping this phone, but I also feel like I'll always be thinking "what if"in the back of my mind.
Anyway, I keep reading that the nexus s will only be sold in stores like best buy.. I'm sure it's too early to tell, but does anyone have any ideas as to how the pricing for the nexus will work.

I'm in the same boat but my remorse period starts tomorrow.
I love this phone but I've yet to get one without some kind of minor or major defect.
My g1 was perfect, but returned four vibrants and on my fourth my touch. Despite that I think this is a much better phone.
I wish the phone had more dev support, I remember the vibrant ramping up much faster.
The hardware in the sammy should be great, but the bad gps in the galaxy s line scares me. I actually like slcd better for everyday stuff. Next to the my touch, I can really see the blue hue on the samoled screen and the screen door text kills my eyes. Plus, though the blacks are the best, I hate having to have everything black themed to get any battery life on it.
I would say screw waiting on the nexus, but the thought of that amazing hardware paired with google dev support is hard to pass up. It's hard too believe that it will suck since it will be a dev phone. I missed the nexus 1 boat last time. Probably means android will finally be optimized for samsung s guts, instead of just htc, and sammy reduced to brute forcing for performance.
Another thing that makes me want it is that it will be the first of the next gen of phones if it truly has orion in it. From what I read about it, might make tegra 2 obsolete before it comes out.

i have had used a nexus one and that was the only reason i was comparing the nexus s. But ya like all of you have said earlier, samsung cant make 100% solid devices, but the quality of HTC devices r worth trusting
For me, it's all about connectivity... if the Nexus S doesn't have HSPA+, I'm keeping the MT4G.
Even if the no HSPA+ radio is true, I honestly don't see that being a deal-breaker. I live in an HSPA+ area and I average about 2.5-3mbps which is the exact same as a non HSPA+ T-Mo phone in the same area. The only difference is the non HSPA+ phones won't go above 7.2 mbps but so far neither can I so that's a non-issue for me.
Coming from an Evo, I agree with the comments about the dev scene being scarcer than other phones (but the few we do have are really stepping up).
I am taking the stance that I am keeping my MT4G thru remorse, and waiting to see what people's response to the Nexus S after its out for a couple weeks is. At that point I can still ebay/craigslist my MT4G for most of what it's worth right now anyway and get the Nexus S if it ends up being the end all be all.
At this point I would rather know I have a reliable, awesome phone that might be a tad light on the dev side than a potentially big samsung flop phone.

I love this phone! Had the G1, skipped the G2 for this (wanted front cam).
I LOVE the build of this phone and hopefully the dev will come soon.
I think I'm going to stick with the MT4G.
I loved my nexus one!!!!! but i love my MT4G better cause of the front facing camara...but i did like the look and feel of the my samsung vibrant....so i just might have to go with the Nexus S.
Something to consider:
With all of the purported hardware improvements, and state-of-the-art inclusions, haven't they still seen fit to omit an led for notifications, and a trackball/track pad, for navigating through text and so forth?
It would be a shame if you had a Ferrari of a phone, that had to rely on NoLED to let you know when you had a missed call or text.

The Mytouch 4G is an excellent piece of hardware. I have good reception, no problems with the GPS, the screen is very responsive and the battery life is amazing. I could care less about Gingerbread too. What do you want with the newest Android version when your phone may have severe hardware flaws. I don't trust Samsung neither their hardware nor their software. I had an HTC N1 the newest android version couldn't help covering the several hardware flaws this device had. I am glad that I found a good piece of hardware.
Mine (MT4) is on the way and I am supposed to receive it in 2 days.
I go for MT4 this time because I need the trackpad and wifi calling, and I may get NS 3 months later.

I think the Nexus S has enough potential that I would wait to see the end result before committing to the MT4G (or any other phone for that matter). You have to remember that Google is probably closely involved in the project which may result in more quality control than usual (see antenna replacement for example). I'm also intrigued by the Near Field Communication chip. If the Nexus S ends up living up to it's hype the dev support will probably be awesome. If it doesn't you can always go back to your phone of choice.
I ended up returning my MT4G before the end of my remorse period (which is 30 days if you buy it full price from a t-mobile store and not online). For those who can't go back to your old phones just remember that BestBuy and RadioShack both have 30 day return policies with no restocking fees
I will most likely get the Nexus S even though I've had the worse experience with Sammy and the Vibrant, simply because I cant say no to the 2nd generation, of the best phone ever made running on dual core.
I just ordered the MyTouch 4g today though, while I wait for reviews on the Nexus. I just had enough of this not so very MOD/DEV friendly phone they call the Vibrant. aka (My Piece of Shyet Phone) lol
Although I love the SAMOLED, the size, camera, and the look of the Vibrant. The software side, the random freezes and the need for Lag and GPS fix (That never really worked) just made it a BIG disappointment.
I know it might be wishful thinking with Sammy being the maker of the Nexus S, but since it will be a Google flagship device, I could only hope for better support and quicker updates than the Galaxy S series.

Maybe a little premature to assume this?
Hello everyone, this is yet another "which phone should I get" thread, so if you are sick of them please move on but I would be grateful for every input.
So up to now I have been using N900 which to me is a very good device, with a lot of room to improve of course, but lack off Nokia's support has just pissed me off. I'm a heavy google user (gmail, calendar & stuff) so android seems like a natural progression. Now, since I have N900 I'm obviously into modding and stuff I'm looking for a very similar android device. Atm that would be HTC HD2, the thing is I consider this phone just too old, I'm looking for a fairly new device, possibly not even out yet, which is sure to get a lot of love from xda and other devs. So yeah, I'm not even sure if it's possible to foretold which device will become the new HD2 in the android world, perhaps it has something to do with open hardware drivers, hope you guys have a better clue. I plan to stick with this phone for another 1,5 year and I just can't afford 2 smart phones at the same time, so I'm basically looking for the best long term investment.
Please, note that I'm from Europe, where not all devices are available or will be delayed. I can probably wait with the purchase until May. I don't have any preferences towards particular brand.

We should wait a cycle of 2-3 yr until that super device replacement arrives, that´s the usual but anything can happen!
With the speed of phones developing these days, won't be 2-3 years. More like half a year to one year.
I don't think you could really answer this question. No one will know until the phone has been released.
As of right now, there's no worthy HD2 successor yet. HTC ups their high-end phone every year (diamond 2008, blackstone 2009, HD2 2010, etc) so cross your fingers for that mythical 1.5ghz dual-core snapdragon hopefully by the end of this year...
In my opinion, The HD2 is still one of the biggest power houses on the market. A 1 ghz processor. Yea there making awesome phones, but very few of them are being made with the components that are within the HD2. Correct me if I'm wrong. Its a stacked phone and you pair it with an Android ROM, and its right up there with anything else.
Oh well, guess it wasn't that hard to convince me. I'm getting HD2 and will slowly watch how the things unfold. Thanks everyone!
How about a poll?
I agree that the HD2 is getting too old to buy as a new phone. I think the step change we've all been looking forward to is coming in the forms of the dual core processor phones due this year. I think it will be a choice along the lines of:
1. Motorola Atrix
2. LG Optimus 2x
3. Other Android device
4. Other WP7 device
I have been a die hard HTC fan since 2002 so I wish I could vote for Option 3 but I just can't wait so I pick Option 1.

The point is you can't just look at any mobile you'd like, compare it specs to HD2 and say, all right we have a rightful successor, there are many other factors to consider. Again, I'm not a developer myself so I don't know much about the whole process but for example N900 still doesn't have a full android experience ported and that is due to closed nature of it's hardware drivers rather than hardware limitations. Also, as far as I know this forum was/is mostly about HTC handsets so I believe a HTC product will be heavly favoured.
I just got a hd2, no box in brand new condition for 140 so I hope the development love is sustained. I will try and help with graphics.
You really will like the HD2. I got mine for 49 bucks when my contract was up for my blackberry a couple months back. Ive loved it. So many different options to choose from and the custom ROM's just add to the mix. I just put the new NAND Android ROM on mine and it runs flawlessly. Not 1 issue soo far and it is freaking fast. No offense to Windows, but Android software is second to none. Like I said earlier, match these two things together, and you will have a powerhouse thats just as good, possibly even way better than the Droid 2 and Evo 4G. I'd recommend getting this phone...But I do recommend that you upgrade to Android. Any questions, just leave me a message.

There's no way of knowing, because manufacturers rightfully don't release information on the hardware that would be important in identifying an "HD2 successor". What made the HD2 so amazing was the completely unlocked bootloader/NAND. Plus the hardware on it was ahead of its time. People talk about the phone as if it was a 2010 phone, not even realizing it came out in November 2009!
HTC Vision may be the 2011 version but no one knows for sure.

For instance Motorola had mm L7 few years back it was modded till i finally bricked it same is the case with HD2. i mean with so many developers working on this phone i think there is more to come. As far as succesor is concerned well im no programmer but each os is processor dependant. As long as they keep recipe the same we can be looking into a new Super moddable phone
P.S i dont think dual core or that crap would change much, as long as we have so many choices on HD2 im still drooling over it

I wanted an iphone 4 lately, some guy wanted to talk me into trading it,
then I tried and I hate that the iphone only has one button, it's not as responsive. next to that all icons are in homescreen, you can only make maps, in android you can switch between launcher or homescreen, and so on..
No newer phone at the market really makes me say 'wow' atm, but I can't deny I look every day, for u successor.

Someone accidentally made my HD2 drop and shattered the screen with a sofa smashing her against the wall. I was quoted $150 US by ubreakifix to replace the screen. I can't wait to get if fixed even though the HTC One S is $200 plus $20/month for 20 months. Yes the One S sports modern specs but it is not as gorgeous as the HD2.
I borrowed my daughter's HD2 and gave her the iPhone 3GS. She was not happy. Even though she is not using a data plan.
I want a Windows Phone which hackers can tweak to run Android. But nothing less than the HTC HD2.
Windows Phone 8 is a long way.
Now I'm not a mobile phone maker, but i do consider my self an active proponent of the Android Community. But there is one question that bothers me why don't phone manufacturers make a beast above all phone.
Now there are quite a few big players when it comes to Android phone manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and LG those are the companies that i consider to be the TOP dogs (whether you choose to agree or not). Ok each company is known for certain things
HTC: Originally the most innovative of the bunch now in my opinion LG is becoming the most innovative, HTC builds excellent phone case-wise i personally prefer to have a heavier/thicker metal/plastic hybrid versus a plastic cheap a*s case that Samsung loves to use, HTC adopted the android OS first with the G1, you may not have noticed it but, HTC has rolled out the first LTE phone for all of the USA's major cell companies so far Sprint-EvO 4G, T-Mobile-G2 and MyTouch 4G, Verizon-Thunderbolt, and At&T-Inspire 4G, last time i checked there isn't any other manufacturer that can claim that they did that, HTC released the first pure 100% google experience with the Nexus One, and even if you didn't release it that phone was and still is a beast of a phone it is based off of the HTC Desire but it sported a great AMOLED screen, 1 GHz Qualcomm QSD 8250 Snapdragon ARM(which was the bomb). The great majority of HTC's phones have came pre-installed with the newest Firmware rather it be 2.1 or 2.2(they havent released a phone with 2.3 yet but non of the manufactures have yet right?(excluding the Nexus S). HTC although they utilize their own skin on top of Android OS called Sense UI and although i have never purchased a HTC phone i've always wanted one for this single reason it is by far the best manufactures skin when compared with MOTOBLUR, TouchWIz, and idk what LG's is called i do believe its LG Star ui but im not sure. And the biggest problem with Android is phones getting supported and HTC in my opinion upgrades the greater majority of its phones @ least once and usually in a timely manner thats something that Samsung cant say and Mototola definitely cant say now for LG they just recently stepped into the ball game so only time will tell.
Samsung- Just stepped into the real ball game with their Galaxy S devices now their devices are great hardware wise with their super ultra sexy Super Amoled screens and soon to have Super Amoled plus screens they sport those lovely Hummingbird Proccesors, but they had a huge dowfall they were released with the already old 2.1 Eclair update when the 2.1 froyo had already been out for sometime which imo is stupid and lazy they also put on top of their phones the most disgusting and horrendous skin their Touch Wiz which is horrible but meh i guess the product sells. There biggest downfall is not supporting phones such as their failed Behold 2 which didn't see a upgrade over 1.6. Their Galaxy S devices just recently began to receive updates to the Vibrant and the Evo 4G began to get its 2.2 but i guess it was recalled, Fascinate no update still on 2.1, Captivate i believe it has received its update but non the less thats ridiculous to wait so long for an update that should have been there already. Their phones are great but software not so great very simple.
LG-Very little is known about LG besides they have quite a few of great high ed phones coming very soon and their midrange Optimus One line is very impressive as a mid range phone at least.
Motorola(lol i accidently forgot them)- Moto well what to say they stepped into the Android game with the release of the Moto Cliq which was by far one of the worst phones ever imo how do u release a phone for $200 and then a month later release a phone with way superior specs the original Moto Droid for the same price if not cheaper some places and then call the 2 phones equals thats insanity the Moto CLiq was released with 1.5 which was donut i believe then was upgraded to 1.6 cupcake were it stayed at forever it was completely tied down with Motoblur if you hate motoblur now hows it is on the DRoid X it ws completely worst on the cliq and the worst part was the locked bootloader so very few roms existed for the Cliq and even the roms couldnt remove the Blur their was one exception the Eclair2CLiq rom which was great but stopped getting support so it was never finished anyways. Motorola has always been about the money im positive that it has a contract with Verizon because verizon has always gotten their high end sh*t Droid Droid2 Droid X and now the Xoom while the other companies have gotten the worst phones possible T-mobile: Defy, Cliq, Cliq XT, Cliq 2, and that one phone thats just a rectangle looking blackberry thing, and 1 more cant think of name either. At&T: had the crappy blackflip then they got the cool a*s Atrix. So Moto is always a hit or miss in my eyes i will never buy from moto because they tie their phones down wayyy 2 much if its not on Verizon and now At&T. Sprint doesnt even have a Moto phone thats android. Moto also has the dreaded bootloader locks which makes the already crappy phone even crappier and if its a good phone it makes it so you cant root or even if you can root it wont be a full root experience like Overclocking and CM7 etc.
So for now IMO HTC owns all by a football field to be honest
Now to my main question why doesn't a company say hey we can make a great phone that has all the features people wont and it will be great and sell well and everything we can put it on all carriers like the Galaxy S devices and the Optimus V/M/S/T/C/and anymore i forgot.
I personally would like to find in my found @ minimum 16 GB of internal memory(like the Samsung Vibrant/Nexus S), A kickstand (just like the HTC Thunderbolt and Evo 4G), A HDMI out connector, 720p recording capabilites, a 8mp camera @ bare minimum, 4G radios depending on the Carrier, a decent stock battery ie 1800 MaH or even 2000 MaH something decent, a lovely screen size better yet make 2 different choices for screens 4" and 4.3" thats the best 2 sizes imo, you can make a slider version for those slider people, come with a dual core proccesor of some sort rather it be Tegra, Hummingbird, Qualcomm, TI, or whatever else is out their, Come pre-installed with @ least 16gb SD CARD, come preloaded with the newest most recent Android update even if you use your skin ie Sense @ least make a separate partion on the phone that the User can flash or make an App similar to Rom Manager yet make it wayyyyy easier to utilize but make it so you can run a completely stock version of Android, come with a decent loud speaker not these tiny lite baby ones like the Galazy S and Nexus S devices im talking about ones like the Thunderbolt or LG's optimus devices(they have great speakers), come with NFC just for the hell of it, strong vibrate, stop using these crappy screens WVGA etc only use SAMOLED/PLUS or since samsung doesn't have enough for their own product even you can use the next best thing avaialbe which is qHD or that Super Clear LCD/PLUS, these are really not that big of demands to find in a phone they're actual very simple please take a look into it and tell me if this is to hard to find in a phone?
Price and affordability and compactness. For a device to feature all that, it'd be ridiculously expensive, probably >€1000 sim free. Also, to fit all that in a phone, you'd have to carry an absolute brick in your pocket. Unfeasable as of yet.
There's no point in making a single, killer handset because you that would mean you'd stop innovating and that leads to stagnation.
Nokia effectively had the killer phone for years - 90% of people I knew would have a variant of the basic Nokia handset (they varied in size but the features were the same) - and look what happened there...
You have to remember that people have a wide variety of needs too -not everyone wants a $400 'does everything' handset - there's still people who don't even text!!

Timing and market drive some development but alot of development is a function of when to release to maximize profit. Then, you start providing horizontal integration that is: to provide X then add X+1 then X+2 etc. That way they can sell you the phone at a discount once you are hooked then they sell you all the update @ retail....... ergo more profit. Sucks, but that the American way !
It's not a feasible business model to put out one killer phone and forget about it.
At the moment the scale goes from Dumbphone, few features but great battery life -> Smartphone, feature filled, crappy battery life.
Build a phone with every possible feature and you'd need to carry a generator around with you.

Eh, I may dislike android but some of your info is a bit off. For instance the Cliq actually did see a 2.1 update which goes to show they may not be the absolute worst when it comes to updating devices. Samsung takes that cake in my opinion. The Cliq also wasn't too much lesser than the droid, the droid was just in a much fancier casing. Manufacturers would not make a perfect phone because then they would have a pinnacle issue. People would only be going for that phone and all other phones would be ignored including the OEM's other endeavors. Not to mention there is no device that would fit everyone. Your device may sound perfect to you but to me it holds all the issues that leave android lacking in my opinion so they release multiple devices to appease the masses.

I have felt this way too, especially validated by fact that I have bought 5 in a row HTC smartphones ---
(1) way way back: WindowsMobile > T-Mobile MDA
(2) way back: WindowsMobile > T-Mobile Wing
(3) 2 years back: Android: HTC Hero (actually bought 2 of them, liked it so much)
(4) 1 year ago: Android: HTC Desire (worked flawlessly til about 3 months ago where a problematic USB port surfaced - later found out thru web searches that its sister model, the Sprint Evo, had this problem like CRAZY, and tons of returns and warranty replacements -- however, HTC in my case is NOT HONORING THE WARRANTY)
(5) 3 months ago: Android: myTouch 4G (HTC Glacier) --- this is a kickass phone that I still believe is very underrated because of its branding with T-Mobile) but has more internal memory to hold more apps than even nexus s

HTC America is really screwing up the BRAND REPUTATION of HTC overall. They are not only completely disorganized, but if anyone has ever called their tech suppoort, they are generally clueless, reading off of LCD screens worse that AT&T phone support -- and that's saying a lot, you can't get any worse than AT&T level 1 Support, they define "HORRIBLE CLUELESS SCRIPT-READING CUSTOMER SERVICE". But that is nothing compared to trying to get WARRANTY REPAIR WORK done by HTC AMERICA. My phone is under 1 year old, with a 2 year warranty for defective parts & labor, and yet HTC AMERICA says I am out of warranty and to fix this defective USB port --- again -- just google MICRO USB PORT HTC DESIRE ... or EVO and you can't miss it... and HTC America says they are happy to repair it for $ 317.43 .
So, I tell you what, this is having a serious impact on my next purchase. I don't have time for this bull****. And they could give a rat's ass about my customer loyalty. I've been buying HTC phones longer than the majority of their goons have even been employed there. You ask someone "Oh, how long have you been with HTC?" And you're lucky if you get "2 years".... Me -- more like 7 years. I don;t expect first line phone support to have such tenure. But when they are complete idiots...

I thought that, with this site having formed around the HTC "XDA" all these years ago, and HTC having been ahead of the curve all these years, and they kept Windows Mobile alive by innovations like TouchFlo etc which compensated for WinMo's 6pt type size and stylus UI after the iPhone debuted, that they were probably the #1 smartphone device maker. I just assumed that.
Someone can pull the stats, but no, I was shocked to find out at the end of 2010, the pivotal year where Android just exploded -- starting with Oct 2009's Moto DROID launch, then Jan's NEXUS 1 launch -- then phone after phone in 2010, and so many HTC models, that HTC's marketshare as device maker was TINY -- fractional ... It shocked me.
So, I'm just saying... They launched their multi-million dollar "YOU" BRANDING CAMPAIGN last year I'm sure to help propel the name HTC into the brains of people who had used HTC products for many years, but many times they were co-branded by carrier names for those phones, and most average consumers weren't even aware the name HTC .... and yet their share is so small. Well, if they treat EXISTING LONG-TIME CUSTOMERS this way, they will erode their existing base. And why would I have any further brand loyalty?
Samsung is making great stuff, so is Motorola. The next device i get will be a tablet. After that, I will NOT be upgrading and buying new phones every year or 2... They will have reached a point of diminishing returns.
So, HTC better clean up their act in America or it's 再见 new phone.

HTC is not even close to owning the whole football field.
Besides an unlocked bootloader which is changing now they are nothing special.
Every phone looks the same with minimal difference in specs.
All these companies cater to a wide range of people so thus why no one super mega phone.
Best is relative to time. What may be the best today may not be the the best tomorrow.

This is for comparison on brands of Android phones. Observations are from general trends across different models, odd cases or low % problems are not taken into account.
HTC
Pros:
Frequent updates to Android builds.
Teflon housing.
Good positional sensors.
Much better customer support.
Cons:
Mediocre touchscreen sensors, although new models good-excellent, older ones poor.
Samsung
Pros:
Excellent touchscreen sensors
Cons:
Poor Android build updates.
Poor-terrible positional sensors, gyroscope, compass, accelerometer.
Touch screens not scratch proof.
Havent had any experience with other brands, please discuss and I will keep this post updated.

HTC is constant on their updates is probably the biggest pro.
I've got since nearly an Month an HTC Desire HD.
With Custom Roms, Rooted, etc. its so much better than any other Phones I saw.
Its Qualitativly rly great, everything looks great, akkucase is great (the place where its hold in ) and dont know.
But when i buy me a new when, i would take maybe the new SonyEricsonAndroid or LG Optimus Speed (2x).
I am loyal to HTC brand phones mainly because I've had the fewest problems with them (Android or otherwise) but I would have to say for me, the biggest con for every Android HTC that I've heard of or used personally is the terrible battery life. This is especially true for a stock HTC without root.

Samsung I would say, I do own both nexuses and they each have strong similarities to other makes in the brand, the benefit though is you get android build updates asap.

Well yes but usually it happens all relatively, and I found it definitely to be the case looking into HTCs latest major phone which is the Desire HD.
I did some research on touchscreens,
Samsung get their sensors from a Taiwan company called Sintek Photronic
HTC get them from an American company called Synaptics
Nexus One and HTC Desire are using an older generation of sensors (ClearPad 2000) where Desire HD is using the ClearPad 3000. The 3000 although acceptable in terms of usability they still contain minor quirks and the vast majority of HTC phones on the shelves at stores contain the older touch sensors.
I would not say HTCs build quality is of note(yet, I need a consensus), I would put it on par with Samsung's. The teflon housing gives an impression of superior build quality although not the same thing, even though it does give the phone significant longevity, it is for the materials used not how they are put together, I have seen HTC phones with for example the track sensor not centred for the opening in the case although working, and I have heard stories of the phones screen cracking with HTC acknowledging this.

And dust under the screen issues aswell.
BTW, HTC AMOLED panels are supplied by Samsung, how nice of them.
But they have switched to Sony for SLCD due to the shortage.
HTC tend to have their CPUs run at rated clockspeeds, and Motorolla tend to underclock their CPUs according to this article on comparisons:

Hence the battery lives.
I Checked out my friends incredible s today, after a brief touchscreen comparison with my nexus s it felt on par with it, infact I got my nexus s to screw up a bit which I hadnt seen before, it wasnt much of a test but I think synaptics could be on its way to having possibly the best touch screens as it is a massive improvement in quality over the nexus one and even desire.
Another thing, my nexus s screen is not scratch proof.
With everything in consideration now I think HTC is far superior to samsung overall for android phones.

I also compared Samsung and HTC my sister got her HTC Desire Z 4 weeks ago and my father has his Samsung Galaxy S for 2 month or something like that he had some problems with a broken speaker and it was quite difficult to talk to someone in the helpcenter who could help him ( this time we didnt know that it was an hardware failure) My sis is not the fittest in handling with smartphones and she had some questions converning her new phone and she got very fast a employed that helped her so i would prefer HTC too
I would glue 106 samsung android phones together to make a step stool to reach 1 htc android phone sitting on a shelf just out of reach.
Personally I believe HTC blows Samsung out of the water. I've had both and the biggest downfall with Samsung is there update policy. You never get updates. I gave up waiting for Froyo so I went to the HTC Evo 4G and now with the killer Rom from xxxvirusxxx I'm running Android 2.3 Gingerbread !!
Its sad no one can offer some insight into motorolla, next time I get the chance and I have time at the shops I will try take a look at one and check out its touch sensor panel, general hardware, and check if the demo has scratches on the screen.

Motorola has a strict policy on locked bootloaders coupled with bad update schedules. I would steer clear of them unless your buying the new Vanilla Android device coming to Virgin Mobile.
I have a samsung galaxy s captivate... one of the best phones i've ever owned
HTC produces the best Androids.
HTC would be the perfect manufacturer if they could put AMOLED back to their phones just as the good ol' Desire (before it decided to use SLCD) and unlock the phones, which they has promised.
I have a HTC Desire and a Samsung Galaxy S at work, they feel mostly the same but the Samsung is somehow a bit laggy sometimes.
And my brother has a Huawei U8800 and i would still have the HTC over that one as well.
Finally got around to checking out a Motorolla, the new Razr.
Could not really conclude much as it is a new gen phone without much to compare it with. So I am just gonna mention my observations.
It straight away looks and feels very well built but soon gave the impression of "just not a HTC".
Assembled in China is embossed into the kevlar at the back, dont know why this is not a sticker seeing as though the company is American and not Chinese.
The phone is top heavy meaning the weight is at the earpeice so when you hold it, it feels unbalanced, although not as bad as the nexus one.
They claim it is waterproof to a rating that suggests you could safely use it in the shower but I dont think anyone has tried yet and the owner did not want to be the 1st.
The volume and power buttons did not feel clicky, they rather felt rubbery, and the volume button placed in a non intuitive position as a tiny rocker, I imagine the lack of feedback on the buttons is either due to how thin the phone is or it being waterproof, this is nitpicking though but an observation none the less.
The edges of the phone are made of plastic, I imagine this is due to reception reasons or to absorb a drop.
Comparing the pentile screen to an iPhone 4 and nexus S(slcd) and Desire all side by side, the color reproduction is inbetween the nexus S and the Desire, tending more towards the Desire with overly rich but not neon greens, the white balance was also slightly off.
The text sharpness was practically as good as the SLCD nexus S and iPhone's.
The touch sensor used was quiet good, not as good as the iPhone's though which seems to still be years ahead somehow
It registered atleast 10 simultaneous touches like a tablet would, it was not impressive but could not find any major faults.
Did not get the chance to test the compass, GPS etc but will hear back from the owner and update this post.
