Unrevoked does not work for the thunderbolt
Doing things with ADB is a good way to start learning.
If you can't read instructions and can't simply copy and paste/extract some files on your SD card and copy and paste commands, you shouldn't root your phone.
Learned adb today and I feel so much better about rooting and flashing roms now.

Wasn't bad. Most of my time was waiting on the flash to complete.
Let me set this straight. Unrevoked are great people that make a great product.
We made EVERYTHING available to Joshua from unrevoked, prior to our release. He was more than helpful, and really nice. Any differences we had were put aside. We both have the same goals, a reliable easy root.
...
Then a single member, not a team as a whole (from what I understand that made the comments) made some uneducated and incorrect comments. He was rude, wrong and hurtful to our community as a whole. I have preserved a screen shot, since his comment was deleted from Engadget.

Matthew made it a point to be hurtful, but obviously does not pay attention. Let's address his concerns.
A) Correct it is an ENG HBoot, we could not set s-off in the nvram. The radio config seems to be locked, and the emmc attack does not unlock it. Of course if Matthew was paying attention, he would know this. FAIL
B) We have had over 1200 downloads of the root files, from our monitored mirrors (thats about 1/3 of mirrors). ZERO BRICKS to date. Not during development, not from users. FAIL
C) You can return to stock by flashing an RUU, it will not brick your phone. This has been proven over and over. Of course Matt would know this if he paid attention, but he didn't. FAIL
D) The "SECURITY WARNING" is easily removed, by flashing an RUU. If Matthew had paid attention, he would knows this. FAIL
Here is the big one..."Perhaps the real work should be done by scotty2 and the folks who know what they are doing as opposed to jcase and team".
Now this right here shows you that Matthew Fogle is a troll, nothing less. He has no clue what he is talking about, he did not read our root tutorial. scotty2 was crucial to it, and was as involved, if not more involved than anyone else. scotty2 continues to sit in our chat servers, and is always more than helpful to "noobs", including me. DOUBLE FAIL
Hopefully unrevoked does their magic, however they lost all of my respect today, at least until they handle their own people.
Get your crud right Matt.
-the noob "jcase"
jcase.... here is your best solution.... ignore everyone else and keep your thoughts to yourself on others... everytime you open your mouth you make yourself look worse and worse.
He pointed out valid concerns.. he never flamed you, if someone pointing out facts about a method hurts your feelings then man up bro....
Even scotty2 above agree's with his facts... accept it and move on... calling out FAIL and other bs makes YOU look bad...
And don't get all pissy about this post either... I'm being honest and direct so you will get it, in an effort to HELP YOU!
Thanks for all you guys do, but man up and stop the BS.
Everyone I think just needs to be happy we have root, s-off, and give credit were it is do. All this arguing is unnecessary. Not picking any sides let's just help each other to enjoy their phone the way they want to.

Is there a reason this thread still exists? Or at the very least isn't closed?
I'm not a noob, I've been in computers since before most of these people were born. That said, I like to know what's going on in the background when I do these types of things. I ALSO like to have the simplest way to get things done.
I did not use the first method AndIRC posted to root my phone. I looked at it and decided I would would wait for something cleaner, but I appreciated the fact that it was there. I did use the second method. It's cleaner, and ends with a current ROM.
I will however recommend unRevoked to anybody who asks me how to root a TB should they provide it. Why? Because it's easier than teaching them how, or doing it for them.
There's a place for everything.
This entire thread should just be deleted and forgotten. I don't know these guys except in passing, but I do know they are all above this sort of behaviour.
Just my two cents.

THIS PHONE HAS BEEN OUT FOR 3 FRIGGIN WEEKS!!!!!!! GET OVER NOT HAVE A TON OF DEVELOPMENT OUT THE BOX!!!!!
Lets get real people. Phones like the G1, myTouch 3G and Nexus One did NOT have a ton of development from the get go. They took months before multiple ROM's, custom Launcher's, custom App's, themes and so on were available. If you were a late bloomer to any of the phones (3+ months after release) then you would not know this and you would not know that ROM development does NOT happen overnight. So STOP whining. Guys like G8gorilla, persiansown and teamsilence (to name a few) are NOT here for YOUR benefit. They develop ROM's, MOD's, and changes because it is what THEY want to do to THEIR phone. They decide to share it with you because that is the type of people they are. Sometimes, some of us, donate to them to thank them for their time, BUT THAT IS IS, ITS A DONATION FOR A THANKS, NOT PAYMENT.
If you do not like the Development we have in just 3 weeks of release on this phone, then BUY A FRIGGIN NEXUS!!!!! And quit whining. If you bought this phone based solely on the development capabilities, then friggin learn how to develop, stop putting it on other members and again, QUIT WHINING!!!!

Thanks for saying what I was thinking!
I bought this phone for the hardware and how much my MyTouch3G lasted. I will be patient and wait for the development, everyone should as well. If your not gonna be patient go buy a subpar G2 or N1.

Well said brother.
Just add my five cents)
This phone is not need to be in development. It always has all things. We got S-OFF and perma-root. We can delete crap stock apps, can modify system.
If will Android 2.3 released, we will get it, cause T-Mobile cares about customers last time (not all time, but release Android 2.2 for MT3G family - it's a great action)
What do you want whine-boys? SenseUI? MotoBlur? Samsung Home?

Just little "hear hear" from the perspective of a developer. Devs are not here as your servants. if you want something developed, do it yourself. People will help you out, if you ask for help, and give the info needed to answer it.
If you're here to hassle developers, and flame, don't do it here. Developers do this for fun, and are more than entitled to abandon the device and move to one where they're more appreciated.
So don't shoot yourselves in the feet here folks. look after your devs, and they'll look after you.

I recently converted to the Android side, rooted, customized, etc etc etc. Now I'd like to root for further theming, bloat removal, and whatever other optimizations come along with that.
But, after reading various ROM threads for Skyrocket, it seems there are a ton of issues that pop up that, as a total newb, I wouldn't be immediately able to resolve on my own. Not just the threat of bricking my phone, but losing MMS capability, or WIFI not working right, and so on.
My questions: Is it worth the hassle? Are these issues minor and quickly resolved? Can I truly brick my Skyrocket ("brick" to me means render it permanently inoperable)? Which ROM is the most popular for Skyrocket?
Thanks for your patient responses.
Yes you can truly brick your skyrocket. If u accidentally have re-partition checked in odin is a good way to do that. Yes rooting is worth it. You cant just jump in and do it. You need to research, and understand what your doing before hand. Learn what rooting is. Learn the basics. What odin is. What a tar is. What cwm is. Just read read read. Then when you do decide to taje the leap follow all instructions posted exactly.
Everyone has a best rom of choice. Depends on the person. I choose red sonja rom. To me its the best. Butbonce you root, and learn how to flash a rom. You will have to try them, and decide which is.best for you

We all started as noobs. And through lots of reading and research weball learn. The ins and outs
Exactly what silver said. I crapped my pants with my first root and flash... Ended up soft-bricking and with all the research I did I fixed it. Youtube is a really big help too! Make sure you have a backup and backup plan. Good luck and welcome to the smart side of smart phones!

Thanks. I guess the threat of bricking my phone is somewhat deterring. Guess I'll keep reading around on it.
It is but if you take the proper precautions and have all the available files you'll be alright. And for God sakes make sure you have debugging checked.

Just read the guides is my advice. I've only been doing this for a few weeks, and xda has provided with the best help by far. This is my first true smart phone.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^agree with everyone. i used to mess with my g-tablet while i had my iphone (jailbroken of course) and now i just got the skyrocket knowing that xda would provide tools to modify the phone from its orignial capabilities. having a little knowledge of cwm and flashing roms i felt that it would be fairly simple to apply the same tools to my skyrocket. after reading and reading through every thread i was skepticle about rooting and flashing a custom rom to my phone because of all the problems people were having. the MOST important thing is READ and UNDERSTAND the instructions before you do anything. even after my experience with the tablet, it still took me 3 weeks to fully understand what i needed to do and what i needed to do it. i rooted a few days ago and yesterday i flashed skyscreamsandwich, and today i applied the camara hack. i love this phone 10X more than i did stock and looking forward to more. the ones having so many issues are not following proper instructions and not doing reasearch thus soft bricking or even bricking their phones (and trust me i know from experience, i bricked an atrix) still takes guts do dive in, no guts no glory!!! just my 2c good luck...
Thanks again. Of course, if I do brick it, I probably wouldn't count on AT&T replacing the thing..

If you brick, don't panic. Worst case scenario a jig would be needed to unbrick. Soft brick can be undone without much grief. Just read before you do anything.
yup, we were all noobs at one point.
Most important thing to remember on the forums, READ before you ask questions. This is not because we don't like to answer questions, but when it's a question that has been asked hundreds of times before and answered......it gets aggravating.
Sometimes you will not find the answers you are looking for in the SkyRocket forums....sometimes you will need to venture into other parts of xda. Google is also your friend as well as other sites like RootzWiki.
Also remember to be polite and patient when asking questions. When I first started I always asked the question followed by a plea for forgiveness if I was asking something that had been answered. It also helps to post links or sites where you did go search for answers. It's a good thing to show you are being pro active in looking for your answer and not just expecting everyone to solve your issue.
We have to remember. These are OUR phones, not anyone elses on the forums, WE have to take responsibility for our own devices. Whatever you do with YOUR phone is entirely on YOU, not the Devs or xda or anyone else that may have answered a question for you.
Following these basic ideas makes for a better community. I believe in community, I had a great bunch of friends over in the Captivate forums......which most of them remain friends on Google +
I look forward to making more friends here on the SkyRocket forums.....and together we can make this a kick ass community.
I think it already is a kickass community. And hopefully remains that way.

Hi all,
first of all I just wanna admit that I am an inept in rooting androids. My friends told me to root my HTC Inspire to CM or some such like that.
I'm not sure if this is a new thread for you guys, but it is for me. I've come to this decision based on the fact that my htc inspire is becoming like crap, hopless, and without a doubt, sh!t can. AT&T won't give a damn anymore about the software updates, so I've decided to take care of business myself.
I've been doing some research regarding rooting the android and I've come across this. I'm still not sure how the whole process works.
Anyone care to help a helpless/hopless brother out?
Thanks
Well the AAHK is the tool you need to root. But before you try it, I would suggest spending some time reading this forum and learning exactly what rooting and custom ROMs are all about. Understand the process, what can go wrong, and how to fix it if it does. Everything you need to know has already been discussed here and it's expected that you search for the answers you need.
Once you're ready to root, read the OP of the thread that you linked to. Then read it again. Download the tool and read the "effin manual" that is included. Do exactly what it says in the manual. The steps are simple but very specific. If you don't prep the computer properly you're going to run into problems.

The Hack Kit is awesome and works beautifully, but you have to understand what you are doing. If you fail to read and understand de process and what is required to achive the root access then you will probably get jammed.
The question is why your cell sucking?? if you are experiencing freezes or lagsm then be carefull that you donĀ“t actually have a hardware issue. If your cells sucks just because you got tired of it then go ahead and you will have a lot of new feautres to add and to install to it.
Read carefully and follow instructions. If you are stuck then hit the IRC channel...

The Ace Hack Kit is definitely the easiest way to root. I can tell you when I first got an Android phone I read up as suggested here and was able to root successfully and progress from there over the past year and a half. Cheers.
To the. Op there is like a million threads on the how to root inspire phone. I can post back like 10 threads asking the same thing. Like the members say read and research and read more and more ... read the hack kit like 20xs so you understand it. Everything you ask like rooting roms how to flash roms making back ups. Radios and rils are all or been posted so research would hate to see a new member get *****ed at for not reading or watching that video when you sign up.

I rooted my phone 3 days ago and took out most of the bloat ware. From my experience thus far, the knowledge here is right on. I spent 5 days reading and using the search button like a mad man. I found all my answers, so far.
Download the Advanced Ace Hack Kit, inside there is a manual, it's called Effen Manual, read it. I read it three times and the instructions were spot on. It took literally just under 6 minutes. Just read the manual and use the search button it works. I haven't had to ask any questions yet.

It's truly a very enjoyable experience to learn what your phone is capable of once you've released it from the cuffs of ATT. I bought my Inspire on the day it came out for ATT in Feb 2011. After rooting and getting all of the benefits, I still haven't found a reason to buy a new phone..

Noobs take note, this is how it's done.
Saved and Texan by the grace of God, Redneck by choice.
Here's another tip, before you start another thread when you can't get it to work in Windows. Follow the instructions for the Ubuntu method.
OmI'm another one that used the ace hack kit for the first time a week ago. I researched for probably a good month before I even downloaded it and read the effin manual. By the time I got to that point, I already knew what I was getting into for he the most part. I ran into a couple hiccups along the way, but the effin manual literally had all the answers I needed. I just either didn't read carefully enough or somehow overlooked some details. After rooting, I waited and researched for about another week before I decided to flash the ics from in the development section. Did that successfully without a hitch also. And remember, this is my very first time rooting a phone.
What I'm just trying to say is that all the info is definitely out there/here. Just be patient, read and don't rush it.
its all in the hack kit. read the effen manual and then read it again then it will go smooth as butter. dont try to rush and dont be afraid. you will be pleased with the results.

Lastly, stop being so effin greedy!

Greed is what makes the world go 'round!
Without 'I want, I want' there would be less innovation.
It doesn't hurt to express interest, even though we all know the interest is already there... and it's no insult to the dev's to let them know we appreciate their work, and have the faith in them that they'll be able to do something with JB when it comes along as well.
Asking for a when, or issuing a 'hurry the hell up' is a whole different story though...
Personally, by the time JB starts showing up on phones I'd more likely be buying a new phone anyway...

You can go ahead and say "I want, I want" all you "want" when you are paying for goods as a consumer to corporations whose duty is to sell goods that cater to their consumers.
These developers work on these roms for free, they put it in hours and hours of their own labor to provide everyone what they are working on for free, therefore "I want" is a moot point.
If you are paying for something you can yell "I want" all you want, if you are freeloading, well then you really can't say much.
And yes, by the time JB is out, people should be ready for their next upgrades anyway.
I never said they'd get it just for asking... what I mean is, if no one seems interested, things are less likely to get any time invested. Who wants to build something no one wants?
I'm not asking for anything anyway... I take what comes along and I'm happy to have it. I can tweak things, but I can't build them, so I'm ecstatic when someone else distributes something I like!
The devs all know people will want JB roms, there really is no need to tell them, but I doubt it's offending any of them, none of the devs here seem that thin skinned to me.
If people start demanding it, then there's a problem... and you're exactly right...
[my typical rhetorical sarcasm]
So is JB out now? how about now? how about now? then can we get Android 5.0 Scooby Snack by Monday? are we there yet? mom? mom? mom? mom? mom? mom? mom? bueller? bueller? bueller?
(PS Do not insult the ADHD, just laugh and shake your head)
Unoffical JB is already out but not for our device ( i know the nexus has it) official release to come out mid July

The OP was just asking a question. He wasn't even demanding JB, he was asking if its compatible and if there are people working on it. Why so rude?

Yes, Jelly Bean will probably be possible at some point with a bit of work. It will depend on us getting ICS to a stable point.
No, none of us are working on it. The source code is not out yet and we've only just started getting ICS going. *
* There are some people trying to get the JB SDK image to work on our device, but you won't really want to use it because stuff will be broken and it will be buggy as all hell.

Hi, I have a Galaxy A5 2017 and for the "May 2019" update (yes I'm a bit behind lol) it says that you can't go back to a lower version, so I just wanted to make sure that loading this update, or any of the later updates, won't prevent me from having the option to root the phone if I decide to do that someday. It isn't under warranty anymore anyways. Although, (and I could be wrong) but I'm guessing you can't get any further updates once you root it? Also I don't know if you can use either the Galaxy Store, or the Google Play Store once rooted.
My second, sixth?? question (DOH!) is about moving apps over to the external card. Despite doing this, it must be keeping a fair amount of data on the internal because it's almost full. Is there a way to see how much of an app has been offloaded to the external card and how much is still on the internal? I guess I should also ask, if there is an app that can move more over without needing root?
Thanks. Yea... that was more then 2.............. :/

If you plan on rooting the device, don't apply any of the stock updates unless you can verify that the update does not contain a bootloader that is locked, if it's locked, you won't be able to root the device via TWRP or Magisk unless there is a way to unlock the bootloader. If you apply the update and it locks your bootloader and can't be unlocked after that, you won't be able to downgrade the firmware to unlock the bootloader, you'll be stuck with it.
If it can't be unlocked, the best you could hope for is that you get lucky and one of the one-click tools happens to have a exploit that works to root the device.

Thanks, but I would have no idea even where to go look to find out if there is a patch that is a "root killer" other than coming... here. Do you have a link or a site name I could google that has information like that?
Thanks!

No, I don't know, I would search by using your model number and the version of the update, I would find threads and websites that have people that have installed the update and see if the threads or sites mention whether or not the update locks the bootloader, or ask someone in those thread or on those sites.
Other than that, it's complicated, you'd have to download the update on PC and extract it to get to the boot.img, if it has one in the update. Then you'd have to extract the boot.img itself to get to the files in the .img, then you'd have to look through certain files look for certain keys, tags and switches that indicate a locked bootloader. It requires understanding what you are looking at in order to tell.

Lol, again, informing them of what to look for and suggestions of what to look for. I don't always post links. I was, more or less, telling them how to figure it out instead of saying "look here".
I'm not a "quick answer for dummies" helper anymore, I'm a "help give you an idea of "how" to look, not, "where" to look". Learning "how" to look is the first step to finding answers, more important than the answer that is found.

& you right. that is a much better way. i'll follow your lead instead of 'spoon feeding'. the old "teach a man to fish ..... " is a much more positive way.:good:
While I totally understand that , especially looking at your post count (WOW), I tried programming and even scripting and I couldn't even script my way out of wet paper bag. Now, computers in general, fine. DOS, C64, also fine, but looking for clues in a download of the file? I wouldn't even know where to start.
I'll try the A Series forum. Sorry that I didn't see it first.
Thanks for trying, but my brain just shuts the door and says, "Um, no." lol

I completely agree, I can barely scratch the surface when it comes to reading code and understanding which files, lines of code or their values/switches.
Glad you found the forum, I was aiming for the journey and the moment of discovery to be a bit more organic, the mind is more "in order" for what is found that way. It can get frustrating, but more experience and understanding is gain in such a manner. For all the headaches involved, it has its rewards. I hope you enjoy your experience here at XDA and come back to learn some more, maybe even help others with what you learn here.

Exactly, my friend.
I'll admit, I know it isn't direct enough for those that are impatient and there are those that just want things to be easy. Time here at XDA has tempered my view towards helping in a direction that involves trying to lead users in a direction that teaches them something along the way. A lot of users are already burned out and frustrated when they finally come here, even if you give them the answers directly, they don't understand what they find and even brick their device because they attempted repairs before they knew enough about what was going on. Something they maybe could have avoided if they had taken a little more indirect path to their answer, a path that they might discover more information and understanding along the way. Understanding that helps them pull things off without a hitch, maybe.(this user isn't dealing with repairs, but it's an example)
At the same time, I don't leave them hanging, I nudge them along the way with more defined help, if they continue to ask questions when they don't understand, but not if they seem like they want someone to just make it easy for them by doing all the work.

Thanks. I remember watching a co-op student get down over something she was having a hard time getting. I showed her some of my early attempts at making frozen soap bubbles (I do photography), including shots of ones at the beginning that were a complete and total loss. It took about 4 outings (it has to be -15c) and getting up at 5am to see if it actually got to -15c which it usually didn't, and I went from things like this,
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",

}
Then I managed this, and man was I stoked! lol
Finally by the end I was shooting these.
I told her that the road to success is paved with the cobblestones of your failures, and that this is a necessary process for you to find the path to success.
It seemed to cheer her up. Hopefully it did.
