I am going to buy a Nexus S and the device has the i9023 marking.
I read that the basebands and the displays are not the same as the original Nexus S i9020.
i9023 has SLCD and the i9020 has SAMOLED( <3 it on my Galaxy S )
I also read a few threads here where people complained of not being able to flash roms and some not able to root i9023 because of something on the /cache partition.
I am currently using a Galaxy S and had a Motorola Milestone prior to this.
Can I run original i9020 ROMs on the i9023 device or will it be a problem.
When flashing a i9023, will I have to change anything or will it be downlaod flash and go.
Can someone please clarify this for me.
I'm thoroughly confused.
This device is a bit expensive in India ~600USD and I don't want to make a mistake while buying it. (I already made one when I got my Milestone...useless locked bootloader)
Thanks in advance.
I'm a recent i9023 Nexus S buyer and I can say that the Nexus S is still a very good buy. Even though currently I cannot install custom roms due to cache problems, but the stock GRI54 is pretty darn fast, even faster den my Nexus One on stock/custom rom.
At first I thought it was a huge bummer, but after using stock on Nexus S for awhile. I figured I can live with it for awhile until the problems get ironed out.
Will a 9020 not work in your country? If it does, I'm sure one of us could help you obtain one.

There's a thread in the general section about the Nexus S - 9023 S-LCD. In there a guy confirmed that he was able to install CM7 on his GT-i9023 Nexus S. Are you sure you're doing it right? You should take a look at that thread.

Maybe that guy has GRI40 instead of GRI54? Because from my other thread someone explained that his i9023 that comes with GRI40 works fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999462
But in another thread opened by someone who had similar problems, those who had GRI54 in their i9023 have the same problem as me.

So you can't even flash CW recovery? If you can you could just nandroid a stock GRI40 if it's a problem with GRI54. This seems kind of odd since they are both technically the same phone (9023 w/GRI40 & 9023 w/GRI54)

works for me
I'm a new user of the nexus s i9023 and I had the cm7 nightlies #31 installed. The main problem is the cache error in CWM recovery and all u need to do is to flash the CWM for i9023 and everything else will work as per the i9020.
I found a link with instructions on how to install Gingerbread on the infuse. I am totally new to Android and just made this account so it won't let me post the link. Anybody want me to pm it to them?
Im just curious if it is real or not... I know hardly anything about android.. i came from an iphone and very glad i did so!
sure pm me
Can you please PM me as well?
I have ROM Manager installed but not sure which model name to select as I don't see Infuse when I try to install clockworkmod recovery
Anyone know which option to select when it asks for model name?
TIA.

any of the galaxy s line should work. i used the one for the capitvate.
where did you find the link? and are you sure it is real?
I saw tons of posts in other threads about how this phone does not have same kernel as Captivate and they bricked their phones. Can you give us more details on how you did it and what option you picked exactly?
Did you install CWM using Captivate as model name only or you changed the stock rom?
Its a rootkit/spam URL.
There is a site that spins these all up about how to get Gingerbread on your device. It replaces a couple things like su and such and will make your phone not your friend.
Im with above post. If it happen it would be on xda... call this bs..
sent from Infuse but miss my captivate on cont. 5.5.... One day this can be as good...

the reason there was a brick is because someone flashed a captivate kernel with CWM built in. if you use rom manager, its the same as if you do the steps in my post regarding CWM.

There'll be no Gingerbread until Samsung makes it, or some genius makes a kernel from, say, i9000 sources like xcaliburinhand did for the Captivate.

Can xcal do that? I think he just reoriented the i9000, I don't think he coded it for another phone....

He took the i9000 kernel source and modified it for use on the Captivate.
Could he do it for the Infuse? Probably. I don't know much about kernels beyond how they fit into ROM creation.
Miui?
Any chance of seeing the MIUI ROM for the Infuse 4G any time soon?

We're still trying to get devices in the hands of devs so...... probably not. We have a donation thread in Infuse General for those who are interested in donating to the cause.

guys, no need to harass people, but. We have a hacked kernel, all the libs and files for GB and all sorts of resources for CM7 to work on gs4g. Also, GSII already is getting nightlies. we need to get working on it. Should be hard as there is already a vibrant edition.

Tell me when you get the CM7 kernel compiled, I can test it for you.
CM uses it's own kernel. Not a hacked samsung kernel.
this phone isnt like the vibrant, so stop saying that. different drivers, different RIL's different kernel config.
oh..

Have you looked into the bml partitions for the sgs4g? It seems that we might be able to flash bootloaders using redbend_ua after all. Been poking around with some dumps I made of the files. So far I think bml1 contains the primary bootloader, and 3 or 4 might contain secondary bootloaders. I ran the dumps through strings to see what kinda messages the samsung devs put in there... Yes yes random rambling.
are they interchangeable with ns & ns4g?? Thanks

most custom kernels are compatible with the ns and ns4g. for example, i use the trinity kernel. i have a nexus s(tmo), my friend has a ns4g. we can both download a kernel from the same link and install it to each of our phones. then i can give him my download, and he gives me his download, then we can install those on our phones. same kernel. most devs dont make them device specific, but some might. now radios are a different story, they are very device specific.
