howdy all,
i was thinking about this little issue and i was wondering if anyone ever looked into it.
i usually "tether" to my laptop using wifirouter, but i started thinking, does this app work similar to normal repeaters, where each repeat can cut the bandwidth in half? i know this is not a repeater situation by it definition, but has anyone looked to see if the relay is 100% efficient?
also, has anyone made any comparisons on speed when you tether using different methods?
tether using BT
tether using USB
"tether" using relay like wifirouter through wifi
just passing on some of my wonderments
cheers
disco
Ive found wired tether to be generally faster by a measurable amount than wi-fi sharing
wi-fi sharing, by comparison, is equally faster than BT DUN

Ever wifi tether app I use (including mobile ap) tethers at horribly low speeds. Under 15kbs. I can run speed test in the same place on my vbrnt4g and pull down 10mbps+. I dont think it's the wifi chip cause running my handset thru my home isp I have fast ups/downs.
Truly boggling. Anyone else have this issue?

Might have something to do with your PC. what kind of computer are you running?
Also, questions like this should go in General.
Hi Guys,
In the last three days I've learned how to root my captivate, side-load apps, installed barnacle and wifi tether, all in the hopes of using my TF while on the road with my Captivate.
Unfortunately I cant get BT or Ad Hoc tethering to work.
I get the paired but not connected error when using BT
My TF is 8.2.3.13 so I can't root (without downgrading to 8.2.3.9 which I'm kind of afraid to do).
Does anyone know if I need to install a custom rom on my captivate in order to get the BT to tether?
I've probably read 100 threads in hopes of getting this to work, but at this point I might have to return the TF and get an ipad (yuck) just to get some connectivity for working on the road.
Any suggestions would be very very appreciated.
Regards,
wunshot
I'm assuming you want to use internet from your phone to tether to the tablet correct? Installing a custom rom is one way of achieving this. I use cognition rom which comes with the ability to tether through wifi. You need to activate that on the phone and have the tablet connect to the phone's wifi network.
I'm not sure if you were doing this but you cannot create an ad hoc network on the tablet and connect the phone to it to tether. The phone has to be the host and the tablet the client.

You don't want bluetooth. SirSid is on the right track suggesting the custom ROM although there are other ways that might not be as simple.
You want to turn on Mobile AP (Access Point) which turns your Cappy into a wifi hotspot and you're good to go. Go check the Captivate forums on how to achieve Mobile AP without much trouble. If you try to use it on a stock froyo cappy it will warn you about needing a tethering plan with ATT, you can easily remove the plan check using TiBu and it's all spelled out in the Cappy forums.

I use Captivate all the time and I can turn on the mobile hotspot and have my TF connect to it.
Atleast I'm not aware of being able to do BT tethering on a Captivate. I'm interested to know, if its even possible. Lets post a thread on the Captivate forum.
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, i plan on using my phone as the wifi host. I will give that cognition rom a shot. Im assuming the cognition rom creates the wifi network using infrastructure rather than ad hoc...is that the case?

Have no idea, I know it just works, it's actually a part of Android since Froyo, it just needs to be enabled and/or not checked if you don't have a tether plan.
I think cognition just uses the defualt android AP app. It creates the network in infrastructure mode if I remember right.
In any case, it just works
(Its located in Settings >> Wireless and network >> Mobile AP)
It supports bluetooth tethering as well, but the tablet would need to recognize it as a bluetooth modem. I have not tried that yet. Using a usb tether would probably be best if it works however. Using wifi tether drains battery faster than than my car charger can charge my phone. I still manage to loose battery even when its plugged in.
Sweet...I'll install cognition when I get home and see where I stand. Thanks for the advice...I'll updater you in a few hours with my results
OP, I have a rooted cappy with firefly rom on it. Super easy to do and its stable and allows for wifi hot spot without stupid ATT finding out you are tethering.
http://www phoenix-hq com/firefly/
It is a legit stable rom. I am able to wifi tether easily with my TF, no problems.
I'm on a stock froyo captivate Mobile AP works fine for tethering, can't figure out bluetooth. I tried for a couple of hours but gave it up Mobile AP works great, although I hear bluetooth saves battery?
EDIT: sorry it's a rogers captivate, i believe US is still on 2.1 nvm!

I don't understand why your getting into the Ad-hoc thing. Any rooted ROM you install on the Captivate, you can make your phone a Wifi hotspot via Mobile AP settings. That would create a Wifi network from the phone, and you can connect to that network in the TF.

I tested my Capativate with CyanogenMod 7 rom. It has "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature built-in. I tried it on my friend's TF yesterday and it actually works great!!!
I put cognition on my phone and it worked like a charm.....thanks!
Hello all,
I currently tether my gtab with my iphone via WIFI. The problem is that it kills my iphone's battery. My understanding is bluetooth tethering is MUCH more efficient and will increase my battery life quite a bit.
I am currently using tehterme and have tried mywi but I run into the same problem. The two devices do pair, but won't connect. Then, when I try to manually connect on the iphone, it says that the device isn't supported and I have to forget the device.
I have a jailbroken iphone 4 with 4.3.2 and the tablet is rooted with CM7 (7.1.0 Nightly from a few days ago).
Please let me know what I need to do. I'm pretty much at a loss right now.
Thanks for all your help!
Mike
Anybody???
I switched to GTabComb 3.2 and exact same issue.
I have not found a way to tether via bluetooth. best solution I have seen is the pdanet for tablets. works for browser but not all apps.
I am pretty sure the PDANet for Iphone does not support bluetooth. It's solely USB and WIFI tethering.
Hi Everyone.
I am not a developer nor really tech savy, but I do know how to adjust a few things. Anyways, I just got my Infuse 4G, loving it so far except at my home. I have really fast internet connection and my router is new and is Cisco. My laptop, desktop and tablet all work really well. My infuse though will connect and tells me that it has a really strong wifi connection, but I can't open anything for **** such as a browser or market app. It works fine at work and at any att wifi hot spots.
Can anyone advice me on this? Sometimes though, it works fine but about 85 % of the time at home, I can't open any internet connection although it says that I am connected to wifi.
I am about 5 days close to returning this if this problem can't be resolved.
Any help will be really and greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Probably your router. If it's Linksys-branded Cisco of the "saucer" form factor - find something better. Linksys-branded Cisco hardware sucks these days.
I suggest finding a router that is supported by DD-WRT - I have always been disappointed when running routers with closed-source factory firmware.

I would think that if it works well at work and att hot spots that this would point to ot being an issue with the home router.
Have you tried resetting the router?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA App
resetting meaning turning it off and wait for a few minutes and turning it back on?
No, but if that was the case, my other devices shouldn't work neither no?

Some routers are buggy and don't play well with some devices.
90% of the time it's the router's fault.
Is it possible to disable internet on phone but access on laptop through tethering wifi which might increase internet speed on laptop?
Your question is phrased a little weird but if I'm understanding correctly, you want to know if mobile data can be turned off and you still being able to use wireless tethering onto your laptop?
If so, no you cannot. You can't share internet that isn't on. That's like trying to play a Blu Ray on your tv with your Blu Ray player turned off.

^what he said. Not possible.

Thanks for the reply guys.
Let me make my question more clear.
On my phone
Internet should not be accessible. No application on the phone should use the data.
On my Laptop
Internet should be accessible through wifi tethering.
Why I want it
I believe, while wifi tethering is active, internet data is usage done by the phone as well as the laptop.
But if we stop giving internet data to phone, it can increase the speed of the internet for laptop.
Ultimately, it will provide good internet speed on the laptop.
I hope the above lines makes my idea more clear to you guys. Thanks.
