[Q] What is purpose of Showcase AOSP, Voodoo Kernel and GAPPS? - Samsung Mesmerize

(Disclaimer: I am new to the forum so I can't post this in the below mentioned threads because I haven't posted enough.)
Hey Ya'll I'm relatively new to the Samsung Showcase and rooted the 2.1 and installed the VOODOO for the Sound improvements! and I loved it.
Today because I can't leave well enough alone I updated to Froyo with the PnP rom.
I saw the thread '[ROM] Showcase AOSP Froyo V0.9, Voodoo AOSP kernel, and GAPPS 3/15/2011' but when I saw all the things that didn't work on it (camera, video camera, Bluetooth) I thought I'd investigate more before I did anymore!
I have a problem with doing things I don't fully understand as long as I understand the instructions.
Can some one tell me what the AOSP Froyo V0.9 Rom is (and how its better, worse different from the EB11 PnP 0.3)
About the Voodoo kernal in the above thread? and how its different than the kernal in this thread, [KERNEL] voodoo for eb11 fix release
What is the GAPPS?
I would really like the Sound improvements and I saw that its not available yet...and the lagfix isn't enough of a change for me at this time to remove the function of the camera, video camera, and bluetooth headset.
So can someone clear this up for me. I've read the entire thread of each of the above mentioned threads and they are more about bugs and for people that already know about of their function?
THanks in advance!
Justin

Google AOSP roms, it's just the base android operating system, no manufacturer additions such as touchwiz, very lean rom

So AOSP stands for Android Open Source P but, any idea why some would use this instead of the Pick N Pack Rom I'm using...and if I can use the Voodoo Kernel with it or if I have to use the AOSP ROM. I guess I'm kind of looking for the features and benefits of different ROMS.
In addition I'm also using this post to get my 10 post up so I can just post this question in the Development thread.

Different ROM's have different benefits, it's all up to the user. Like I said, google it, do some research and find out for yourself what ROM's are all about. MIUI, CyanogenMod and AOSP are all different types of custom ROM's.

Thank you I will google it...more thoroughly.....I though AOSP was more of a definition than a name of the ROM.. Thanks for the input.
Anyone have any good links? (again trying to get my Post up to 10)

Why don't you just ask whatever it is you want to ask instead of wasting peoples time with posts just to up your post count? The same people that post and answer questions in the dev forum read these. No need to wait to ask until you get your posts up.

Any way I Guess I learned that the AOSP ROM is the most basic Rom. Also Found I can flash the voodoo Kernel but it only gives lag fix at this time. so I may wait to see if the sound improvement comes...thats what I enjoy the most!
So I hope others with similar questions have found this thread helpful.
Thanks for reading

[REQUEST] A rom without Sense-UI?

I read that the wiimote app won't work with sense-ui...so is it possible someone could make a rom with sense-ui removed? A barebones rom would rock. Thanks
As stated on many threads there is no way to remove sense completely atm. Not without an AOSP *correct me if I'm wrong* also this isn't the thread to ask for such things. Just saying.

Not until the source is released... Then hopefully we see some Cyanogen stuff show up in AOSP ROMs for the Evo. i would love to see Darch and Zen from the Hero forum get Evos.
Ok:-d Thanks for the decent response. I was afraid I'd get flamed for a simple question.
I actually looked for the rom before I posted this but I must be blind today.
As soon as we get the kernel source we should see some fully-functional AOSP ROMs. I can't wait.

[Q] Samsung Mesmerize Roms

Hello all,
I am new to the forums so I apologize if I posted in the wrong place! I am looking for a Froyo rom for the Samsung Mesmerize, I have spent quite a bit of time looking and have been quite unsuccessful so far. All I am looking for is a basic Froyo Rom, something that would be close to what Samsung themselves would actually release. I am new to Android so I do not know where to look exactly. I have hacked the PSP, jailbroken iPods, and installed custom roms for Windows Mobile phones so I am no total noob in the hacking aspect. If somebody could just point me in the way of some safe froyo roms that would be much appriciated, thanks in advance!
you can not yet
I think jt has a clean mesmerize rom for you...

There are no roms Froyo based at the moment but the current rom that is avalible is Deodexed and clean (striped of extra bloat) It is an Eclair DI14 based Rom. There is also voodoo and nonvoodoo kernels avalible and I just posted some MODS I created Accurate battery and notification Icon changes, as well as it gives you Custom bootanimations if you choose the voodoo kernel,as this kernel supports custom bootanimations...All kernels can use this mod you just wont have bootanimation change if you choose nonvoodoo...Hope this helps

Discussion for new aospGBModv0.1 - AOSP 2.3.1 (Gingerbread) 12/25/2010

So what's updated on this 12/25/2010 version from the previous one?
Also, what's not working at this point?

LOL, good point.
Seriously, aosp makes an excellent job (as usual), but never announces what's new or what's still not working. Personally I'd like to know.
Where's the download link for this "Discussion for new aospGBModv0.1 - AOSP 2.3.1 (Gingerbread) 12/25/2010" rom?

Right here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722122
I know it has links BUT they are broken... 404 - Not Found
He mentioned before the 0.1 release that he was working on the gapps so since I don't see anything changed in the .1 release I think gapps are the only new thing.
Ok for some reason when I flash included gapps nothing happens ... no Gmail no market nothing at all downloaded multiple times flashed, wiped formatted all, still nothing... even booted first before flashing
..
this is what i found that works
calls/data
txt msgs
mms send/recive
wifi
wifi tethering
all the gapps work
what doesn't work
camera
senors/lights
gps
there maybe more but that is all i found so far on 0.1
camera!?
lol, if thats all that doesnt work this may as well be my daily.
This has become my daily. I don't need GPS I can use a map if I need to and the lights not coming on save in battery. My phone has been unplugged since 8am and I am at 57%. I also tossed in one of Deca's kernels. My only concern @ this point is Gmail not working. But I can get the gist of them in the few seconds they do open for. As for the camera not working it is winter in Washington it is always dark here it seems. So you need a flash.
mmm gingerbread.
forgive me if you think I'm being an ass, but why in the world does this tread exist, and why is it in development? The AOSP gingerbread ROM thread is already a place for discussion, and it contains the actual development. I think when somebody asked earlier "where's the download link?" they were actually asking "why is this thread in development?" only in a sarcastic way. If you want to know what is different in AOSP's rom you have to READ the thread near when he updates, the answers are always there, just not from AOSP himself.
Peace and love.
Well we have a thread disscusing the cm6 nightlys and that download link doesn't even work anymore and yeah maybe people are just being lazy and don't want to read though 90 pages of replies but if there was a problem with where the these is located I'm sure a mod would move it so instead of sharing ur negativity and post something positive or thread related and let the mod's do their job. No this does work with Firerat's mod just takes some tweaks
First follow the directions for the recovery that's all the same
but inorder for it to be stable you then need to wipe/formart everything and flash the first alpha and decafuct if you wish then the fr boot zip
reboot, once booted reboot recovery and flash the old gb gapps and reboot
once that boots up reboot recovery and flash aospGBMod-v.01 zip and reflash decafuct if you wish and then the FRboot zip again then reboot
once that has booted if maket doesn't show up reboot recovery and flash the old gb gapps again and you should have the market
for some reason the new gb apps don't work with firerat's mod the market never shows up and if you download the vending app from the internet and install it just fc and never opens
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8571811/gapps-mdpi-20101020-gb-signed.zip here is a link to the old gb apps if anyone needs them

Not trying to be negative, and the answer to lazy non-readers is never another thread. BTW the nightlies thread was posted by darch, who is the maintainer of the heroc for cyanogen, and that thread is actually used to help develop the rom (this one isn't, I doubt AOSP will follow two threads for his one rom). also, the nightlies thread has 7000+ posts, so if the logic were to open a new thread at 90 pages, well, you get my point..... If this should be here than great, it just doesn't seem like it should.
yeah your probably right aosp probably won't follow two treads but maybe this thread will keep the guys trying to test for aosp closer on the other tread and all other questions can be disscused here and i don't think your an ass i think you have a point of view just like i do. But just cause you and i know what we are doing most of the time doesn't mean there aren't people on here that don't know what they are doing and if having two treads helps them and us out so be it if this tread dies so be it but only time will tell give time this tread could become just as usefully as the nightly thread but we can't tell on only the short time it's been up
So mic/sound is working now?

Looks like the only thing that's not working is the camera.
Which unfortunately is a deal breaker for me, but oh well. I'm still amazed at how fast this rom is coming along anyway.

A simple mod alert on the first post asking a mod to move the thread to Q&A or General would work. If nothing happened, then it was meant to be.
I agree, however, that this isn't needed. Esp since it's now outdated and no ROM development is happening here.

Which Rom in Your Opinion is the Best?

I'm coming from the Vibrant forums, and am looking for the best rom to flash onto my friends Captivate. Which rom in your opinion is the best for day to day use? Also are there any roms that still utilize the Touchwiz launcher?
Assonance is the best.
Sent using smoke signals.
Do you know of any roms that contain the Touchwiz launcher?
I'm pretty sure DG has kept a modified version of the TW Launcher in his latest Perception build. And considering it's a DesignGears Rom, you know it's pretty solid.
I'm personally using Auxura at the moment. My next step is going Phoenix (same dev) or Perception.
Alright thanks for the reply. Do you know if Odining back to stock is absolutely necessary? In the Vibrant forums it's totally optional and only precautionary, but it seems like nearly every Dev has it listed as a MUST DO in this forum.
Follow the more rational conventional wisdom

It's paranoid and unnecessary unless you know/suspect that the ROMs use kernels with conflicting filesystems. Just wipe /data and /cache.
Ok guys we all know that best rom threads dont work, Best bet is to try them each over time and make your own mind up.

Common Misconceptions About the D2.

So after seeing many things that is said with the D2 I thought I should write a post like this. This is just to clear up confusion so users can have the knowledge to use in the future.
Every ROM for the D2 is AOSP
I have seen this said many times and it bugs me that people think that all ROMs are AOSP. As of now, there are actually only a few AOSP ROMs for the D2, cvpcs' Tanzanite/Obsidian, Cobalt, and blackdroid's Ultimate Droid. Other ROMs like rubiX, Liberty, ApeX, and Fission are basically Motorola ROMs with the blur applications replaced with AOSP applications. Now this does not actually make it AOSP. It has features from AOSP, but there is much more to it than the applications. These blur-based ROMs actually have other AOSP-like features, such as lock screen music controls and a few others. Now that also doesn't make it AOSP, those are just a few features that were originally modifications to AOSP to add more functionality to a ROM. That doesn't mean these ROMs are bad in any way. They are actually very good. The only downfall of them is the fact that they are limited to what can be done.
There can't be AOSP ROMs without a custom kernel.
Another statement I have been told or have seen several times. It is considered AOSP if it comes from Google's source. A kernel won't affect the fact that it was built from source. Although it would be ideal for a custom kernel with AOSP, it isn't needed.
A custom kernel is needed.
This is another incorrect statement. It would be nice to replace the kernel, but it isn't needed. The kernel that is provided to us from Motorola includes basically everything the end user would need. Also there is overclocking(although it isn't the easiest implementation) by adding a temporary module to the kernel that is erased after the phone is powered off.
Gingerbread won't come to the D2 until Motorola releases a new kernel with their Gingerbread update.
Incorrect. What the original concern was that Gingerbread would not boot with a .32 kernel(the kernel the D2 has.) and that it needs a .35 kernel. This was later proven wrong with D1. The D1 has been running Gingerbread for a bit now with a .32 kernel. Now I know people will say it is is a different kernel or something along those lines, but that doesn't matter. Gingerbread will boot on it without needing to replace the current kernel.
Fantastic post. Very clear, informative and I learnt more in the 2 minutes reading your post than the hours I've spent reading other threads.
Top stuff.
"Most truths were once deemed blasphemy"
Whats taking so long for Gingerbread then?!
Nice write up, very informative.
Matt, can you check out the MIUI thread in D2 development? Another developer and I are working on the port but we need someone with really good D2 experience to look over the rom and tell us why it gets stuck on the moto logo each time, we would really appreciate it if you could check it out for us.
Thanks,
ljbaumer
P.S. nice post it's really clear and will help out noobs.

Matt I would have to ask nicely along with ljbaumer, if you wouldnt mind taking a look at the rom dev section for the MIUI D2 rom!
I know you lost your D2 and no longer have it but anything could help them w/ progress
Would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Someone should sticky this thread cause it is really useful information

This is now irrelevant, take a quick jaunt over to MDW where P3Droid has released full stock moto gingerbread builds for both D2 and DX in update.zip formats (new blur builds). Only catch with them at this time is that no one has figured out how to root them yet, but you can restore back with a previous SBF.
What differences could be expected if GB were to be paired with a .35 kernel rather than the .32 kernel of the current Moto GB leak?

I'm pretty sure they've rooted the GB builds... I had superuser access and could boot to recovery and everything. You do have to SBF back to them though, I learned that the hard way.
I am running the rooted Gb and loving it. I would love to see a cm7 version for the Droid 2

DX is supposedly getting the GB OTA, so the D2 should be next and soon!
