Hi guys,
I bought a Nexus S yesterday which is the "new" i9023
It comes with 2.3.3 GRI54 built in already and it's supposed to be using the Super Clear LCD
One thing I noted is I couldn't install custom rom due to a error in the recovery menu about the cache. Which I couldn't find any info on the web. Apparently, there are a few people with this new model who have the same problem as me. So I assume this new model is "unrootable" for now.
Is there any way I could fix this? Or i'm just screwed buying Nexus S too late?
I have the newer nexus s too. And it was easy to root.
You need to unlock your bootloader, and there are loads of guides in this forum.
I did follow the guides on the forum. But after unlocking the bootloader and installing the recovery menu and superuser, the recovery menu shows error messages about the cache, which was pointed out in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992114
I reckoned that since most of the users who had that problem was using the new Nexus S, its the problem with the new Nexus S. But I think its not the case now since you have it and it works fine.
Mine is the i9023 like yours, but I had gri40 pre installed.
I unlocked the bootloader, flashed clockworkmod, and then I used superboot to get root, and it all worked just fine.
Maybe gri54 is the problem.
Hmm, that might be the case.
I, too, have the new Nexus S model with 2.3.3 GRI54, and had it rooted within minutes. But as noted in the other thread, several people are having issues with the cache not working.
I flashed GRI54 on my I9020T with Odin, and I have no problems.
Odin works fine because it returns you to stock. I used Odin too because installation of custom firmware failed and I got temporarily 'bricked'
The main thing is I want to install custom firmware successfully so I need to solve the cache error.
Bumping this as many new sets in Singapore are on GRI54, so I hope someone is able to solve this problem.

Great, managed to root my i9023 too!
An update to this issue. Apparently the recovery needs "new" recovery kernel for it to work on the i9023 Nexus S.
The CWM mod has been updated to 3.0.2.4 and the modder has released 2 versions to the public so you can update your recovery and use the right one for your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686
I haven't try the new version yet but will try later tonight. Hope those who try it first give some comments if there is any problems with the new version

boots fine into recovery without the cache errors
yet to do any flashing
Hi how can I flash that? Using fastboot? I'm on a Mac it should be fine right? Also I can't seem to download the file. We should be getting the i9023 ver right? Hope the file won't be taken off.

I just unrooted my nexus s (9020t) and returned it to stock. It came up with 2.3.1 originally and wanted to update it back to 2.3.3. I found the update drivers and tried to update it, and came up with the status 7 errors. If found the solutions, and tried to go from 2.3.1 to 2.3.2, than install the radio thing to 2.3.3. Up to 2.3.2, it came up with the same error and tried the last resort of updating it to the full 2.3.3 os.
After the update, the nexus s turns on to the google splash screen and hangs up there. I can still access the recovery by holding the volume up and power. I also tried to do factory reset, and wipe data. Nothing seems to help.
Any help?
I'm no expert by any means but you may have to use odin to get it going again. You will probably need to make a jig or buy one to get into download mode.
I hope this helps you and your able to get up and running again.

I'm totally new into the android community and have no idea what Odin or jig is.
Since the fastboot is working, is there something that I'm missing with resetting orders or something else? I found that some one did a wipe dalvik (I think) with factory reset and cache, but I cannot find the dalvik.

You dont need a jig to get into download mode
Aslong as the bootloader is unlocked
Power down phone hold volume up/down then plug in USB from computer ....in download mode
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
im thinking if you could still access the bootloader then you can still flash clockworkmod. when you get that running, flash any rom u want in clockwork including stock 2.3.3. no odin necessary.
As long as you can still use fastboot there's no need to use Odin or JIG to flash the ROM.
I assume that:
you already have clockworkmod recovery installed and it's working properly.
your phone model is I9020T (SAMOLED)
If those are correct, I'd suggest you to download the 2.3.3 OTA package and flash it via clockworkmod (use the menu "Install zip from sdcard")
After flashing you'll have 2.3.3 on GRI40 running. And if you want to continue updating to 2.3.4, there's a thread dedicated to the topic.
PROBLEM SOLVED! Big appreciation to sonnysekhon who helped me over the phone at 11 in the night!
I was guided to just unlock fastboot, load the cwr and go into usb storage, add the cyanogen mod 7 and voila, problem solved. Now my only problem is, I've got 2.3.3 and want to update it to 2.3.4. Is there any easy way to do this?
Again, I want to thank you guys for the help!

Are you on cm7 or stock?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
I'm on cm7. It shows the cyanogen mod splash screen during bootup and has rom manager, file manager preinstalled.
I'm not really savvy when it comes to android mechanics because I just moved from itouch and iphones to androids couple days ago.
First of all. Congratulations on making the best decision! Iphone sucks. Lol.
Anyway, you can't update to 2.3.4 yet since its only available on stock right now. We're gonna have to wait until devs incorporate it into their custom roms. I believe there is a nightly version of cm7 that is already 2.3.4 but its not as stable as the 2.3.3 yet. hope that helps.

Hey guys,
Can't seem to find a solution to my problem. I restored my phone using LG-P999-V10f back to factory rom, unrooted my phone and now it's back to 2.2.2. I tried updating my phone, but it just tells me "Current version is the latest version."
One other annoying issue I've encountered is that when my display turns off either from inactivity or from pushing the power button once, I can't go back to the phone. Pushing the power button again just brings up a blank screen, which leads to me being forced to take out the battery and reboot.
Any idea what's going on here?
When I quit using my g2x as a daily phone I restored it back to stock and unrooted it also (was on weapon). Everyday I would check for the update and it always said current version is the latest. Basically what I'm saying is, just like the 1st time GB was rolled out ota, not everyone will receive the update.
I finally said screw it and flashed bionix reloaded 1.2.

Did you also restore the stock recovery? Without the stock recovery the OTA will not work. At least that is how I understand it.
If you want a better stock-like experience try the Weapon Rom.

Oh yeah thanks for pointing that out. I had restored stock recovery on mine.
I just wanted the newer baseband. But life shall go on. I suffer less phone frustration using my sgs4g as the everyday driver anyway.
just nvflash it back to 2.3.3. A lot easier but will wipe everything and make the phone entirely stock gb. Not sure if it changes baseband read through the thread and see.

Is that for 2.3?
ETA: NVM, it does. I'm going to give it a shot in a bit. Thanks!
Dumb question. How do I install the APX zip file in that guide???
ETA: Figured it out, didn't need to install it. Forgot that I'd already done it here.
Phone's now update to 2.3.3, stupid black screen of death that appears when I try to turn my screen on is gone!
One last question. Is 2.3.3 the most updated version of Gingerbread available? Is there a more updated version out there I should install to?
Once the baseband has been updated you can no longer use the LG Updater to update the rom as it checks the baseband. If the baseband is a later version then expected for the rom it will not update.
You need to flash CWM Recovery using NVFlash and then flash the ROM of your choice, whether it is a stock rom or a custom rom.
Hello I hope you guys can help me.
So I decided to get a Nexus S about 2 weeks ago, 1st one I had I upgraded straight to 4.0.3 ICS. Ran well except from poor available RAM and the dreaded back button issue. Finally had the handset replaced with a (seemingly) full working handset.
However I notice my android version is 2.3.1. To be honest I only want official upgrades to avoid any problems with warranty. So I check for software and apparently this is the latest version. I know this isn't true...
Please help me or offer some advice on what to do. I did search for this query but I couldn't find any recent posts regarding this.
Many thanks.
Google pulled the ics 4.0.3 update due some issues. But somewhere this month we will get the 4.0.5 ota, so dont worry

Thank you for your prompt reply,
Even if I'm currently running on 2.3.1 will my phone automatically go straight to 4.0.5?
Thank you
hi there,
you have two options:
1. as per prev post, wait until you get 4.0.5 OTA sometime this month
2. or if you do not want to stay on 2.3.1, you can check this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445570
it has all official updates from 2.3.1 up until ICS 4.0.3
all you need to do, is download the incremental package you want,
boot into recovery (3e) and install zip from sdcard.
the choice is yours.
good luck

Yes, but you can at least update to 2.3.6 using the manual method. Just find which model of the Nexus S you have, and download the update file for your phone here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664 and then just boot into recovery and browse to the update zip you downloaded.
Using the manual method is safe and doesn't require unlocking or rooting your phone.

Does one ever really NEED to update your recovery? I currently have a very early version of koush's touch recovery (v5.0.1? or 5.1.0 something). and also, if i update my recovery, will it erase my entire sd? (like when initially flashing a custom recovery) Thank you

No it won't erase anything.
And it depends on which version you have. Some versions had bugs that got corrected, some have new features. It's not necessary most of the time unless you got a very old one with bugs, obviously.

Although it's not "vital" to update the recovery, it's always worth doing so.
having it updated means new feats has been added or bugs have been ironed out.
I, for example, lost my IMEI due to something wrong happened while flashing, caused by either the .zip or the recovery, not sure which one though...

Hi, i updated to 4.4.3 via ota update. After that i tried to open SuperSU and it says 'There is no SU binary instanned and superSU cannot install it.'
Did i lost root? Do i need to start from the beggining ?
I was trying to flash Franco Kernel and i realized that there is a problem after i tried to enter recovery mode. My device failed to enter recovery mode showing me a dead android with a red exclamation mark.
Thanks in advance !!
1) the dead android is stock android recovery
2) yes you lost root
solution: reflash a custom recovery in fastboot and then flash the supersu zip and you're done.
there are a ton of threads about this issue and how to solve it all over the place. please search next time.
Actually he is not alone. I too updated ota to 4.4.3 and lost root. I searched and searched and I am sure the answer is buried "somewhere" but I couldn't find the answer to *my* question.
I previously rooted my Nexus 5, 4.4.2 using adb and Fastboot, but my question is which image do I use for TWRP and 4.4.3? Is 4.4.3 still called hammerhead or something else? Those names are confusing to non experts and flashing the wrong img can brick the phone.
Which TWRP recovery image do I use?
Which Supersu do I use?
And where do I find them?
Thanks.

The device is hammerhead. The latest official twrp is fine and same with super su. Don't use tool kits that way you know what to do when something like this happens.
This will take you start to finish you were rooted so im assuming your bootloader is unlocked and you can start with flashing recovery image just be sure to read it all .

Yes, but it also makes you look like an idiot when you post on here complaining something doesn't work because of use of a toolkit.
Rooting is just flashing a custom recovery then flashing SuperSU. If you need a toolkit to assist with something as simple as that then I suggest you revert back to stock factory images and stay away from anything regarding "root".

Yep, I'm surprised people still ask this question. If you know how to flash an OTA, you should know what happens after. On a side note, when I flashed the 4.4.3 OTA, I actually didn't lose the TWRP. I just used the OTA from the OTA thread. I just thought it strange.
