[Q] Voice search not available for your carrier.. Is that a joke? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I just cannot believe what I am seeing!
I currently use CyanogenMod 7 and was sad because I couldn't find voice search in the Market.
After a quick look in the Web Market, I just learn that my Carrier (Base, Belgium) does not allow (see attached screenshot)
After Googling, I just feel alone because no one else reported same issue

Just installed Market Enabler and everything is fine.
I am just astonished to see that such a basic app is country-dependant

Same thing happened to me i just reflashed the rom.. and ofcourse wipe dalvik and wipe data/cache and it went away hope it helps

Lol! Funny thread

Why is that a funny thread?
Because you live in America and you have access to all Google services?
Please think about all other countries that have to cross their fingers each time there is a new product/service/application to know if that will be available in their country.
That's just amazing that we have no information on why we have access to a limited services and having restriction on basic stuff like voice search because we live in other country than America.

I guess voice search is tailored for each language? Hence the lack of support. I know voice search initially supported only English, more languages were added later on. If your language is currently not supported, I guess that would be the reason why it's not available in your country.

Google voice search work pretty well in english and french-dutch-german (our 3 national langages)
Just tried every langage with amazing results.

I had the same issue with YouTube.apk. Market Enabler fixed it again for me, but I remember Google having removed the region-related conditions on app-purchasing... what's up with that?

[Q] Market/available apps in different countries

Hello there,
I have some questions about the Android market and the availabilty of apps in different countries.
Infos first: I live in Hungary right now and I have Desire bought in germany. I'm using T-Mobile Hungary as my provider. Everything works great
But...
I was looking around in the market for some apps to install and also used sites like androidlib.com to find stuff. Unfortunately many apps just can't be found when I search or use these barcode scans (example app: skobbler ).
So I assume that the market checks my IP, sees that I'm in Hungary and because of that I can't see all apps but I haven't really found any specific information on how this works, so I'm not sure. Maybe there is another setting or mechanism or whatever...
Maybe you know
Second though: If my assumption is right, the country restriction could be bypassed by using VPN, with a german server for example!?
PS: I know about the restriction of paid apps but I wasn't looking for those. My questions are related to free apps.
Thanks for your answers

[Request] Possible to modify vending.apk for Wifi Xoom?

The Xoom is released in Canada now. But the market is so bad compared to living in the USA.
For one, we don't see a 'Tablet App' section, so it simpossible to weed out tablet specific apps, this leaves me with so many FC's on apps. Real stupid by google..
Another ofcourse is we don't see apps such as Google books, Pandora etc.. this was fixable using rac's Market Enabler, but since the wifi xoom has no GSM it won't do anything..
So does anyone have any idea, perhaps modify the vending apk to seem it is located in USA
Thanks alot
Have you tried going to the marketplace from withing your browser? It is a bit more functional. It even shows which apps you have already installed without having to go into the my apps section.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
no difference unfortunately
The Featured tablet apps shows only some tablet apps (in US), not all tablet apps, so even this isn't a solution for your problem. Give it some time, i'm convinced that developrs will update their apps to support Honeycomb.
About the apps that are made for US customers, it should be possible to access US Android Market on wifi only Xoom by using US VPN and disabling other location services in setting, but I haven't tried it.
"Market Enabler "

Have you tried copying the build.prop from a US Xoom? Just an idea.
i would go with build.prop before enabler. my wifi xoom does the market without issue and I didn't touch carrier status at all.
Market.enabler.wont work
Wifi xoom has no GSM
And I do have the USA xoom imported it

I have a US imported xoom too. I connected to a VPN in US, cleared Market data from Setting/Applications and the market showed the Tablet Apps section. But... I tried buying apps and I got a message that it's not allowed (or something) by my carrier!!!
This is a stretch but perhaps its tied to your actual google account. An easy enough test would be for a US xoom owner to fudge a non-us address on their google account or a non US one fudge a US address. I believe this is how Amazon is filtering purchases in their new store.
You're right it must be tied to the google checkout account. Does anybody know if it's possible to buy using Gift Cards?
I've had customers purchase AR.Pro with a gift card, certainly.

well have you tried proving this theory..
by changing locaotin to USA on a google account and sign in with it
I might give this a go, would be interested to know if anyone else has tried it though?

I got it to work! (sort of)
You have to be rooted
Download paid apps enabler http://www.cohortor.org/paidappsenabler/PaidAppsEnabler_v1.1.apk
Set the country as Us T-mobile
Got to Application settings and and clear data
Restart Market
I can now see Books
But Not featured tablet apps.
Ya thats one thing
but the features tablet apps is another, i dotn get why canadians cant see this wtf.
why cant we see apps that are meant for a TABLET in Canada
Ive thought long and hard about any sense in this, maybe laws etc.. but nothing made sense
this is plain STUPID
Featured tablet apps are not showed in Europe also, not even on a US Xoom.
Yup.same here but in Canada
Anyone know how to contact Google or petition

Hi,
I think my situation can show a little light on the subject.
I live in TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). And when I go to my office near the border, the market instantly changes to Euro, enabling me to buy the apps (not all of them shows on the market); and when I go to my home away from the border, the market changes to TL and I cannot buy anymore (Turkey and Google has a little catfight about tax so purchases are disabled)
What I am thinking is maybe the device staples your location by wifi (approx) and then it uses the location (not the provider details) to detemine in which country you are?
I don't know if this might help anyone but, wanted to share; hoping someone solves thes pain in the a.s problem. I am longing for books, youtube, earth and tegra games...
People you do not need anything. No root, no prop files...
I just solved the problem yesterday...
---> Go to Google Maps
---> Settings Tab
---> Latitude
---> Settings Tab
---> Settings
---> Select "Set Your Location/Manually Select a location on the map"
---> "Point on map"
---> Go to anywhere in america tab and hold a point
---> Tap to select this point
Taddaaa, everthing is now open... Books, Earth paid apps everything... As long as you keep your latitude there ( only latitude app cannot be used, It will show you in us(mine is currently in nebraska) ) you can buy and use any app.
After that, just change it back to "Select your location..." (Be aware that when you select back to this option you may lose books and youtube)

[App][Share] Market Unlocker

I had earlier posted this in the Galaxy Ace Themes and Apps section, now posting in Android Themes and Apps forum for greater benefit of users-
"Hey, all.
I was just browsing the web when I found an app- Market Unlocker
If you're not living in USA, you probably don't have access to some pretty cool apps like Vevo etc.
This app converts the market app of your country to Android market of USA (or any other country for that matter) and back with just one click. You can choose different carriers like Sprint, Verizon, T-mobile etc.
Using this app you can even access Amazon appstore (not sure, haven't tested yet)
I cannot post any links as I got the .apk from a friend
(Google will help you there)
I am in no way related to this app, and do not hold responsibility for damage that may come to your device using it.
Full credit to developer.
I just shared it cause I liked it pretty much and thought you guys would as well.
If you did, just spare a second and press that thanks button.
Peace."
Can also change proxy, now.

Google play region restrictions.

All I am asking is some clarification or some links into why google restricts apps on the playstore by region?
I could understand why paid apps might not be available, whatever, but free apps should be free across the board. Thats why they are free right? Download them and use them. Whether you would be able to buy the pro versions or not depends.
This effectively judges people who are not likely to use the google play service to buy apps into oblivion. No apps, nothing. Google play is bare if you are not inside regions Devs want you to be or something. "Oh, dont happen to live in the places we are interested to sell our products, well, screw you!"
I dont get the whole region dsicrimination google does to people. What the hell am I supposed to do, start pirating apps? I can tell you for a fact that even apps like facebook are not aviable outside major regions such as North America or Europe and by europe I mean countries like germany, france,uk and so on, big or important countries in general in the EU.
This seriously puts me off using google play at all as I find this very damn unfair. Actually, I wont get an Android device, at least one that supports Google play as long as the guys in google think its smart to divide people within the places they live or are born. Just imagine if the internet was handled like this. In some places it is, and its just darn disgusting, having to use proxies and what not.
I dont know if apple or microsoft does this, so if somebody knows for a fact, or lives in regions excudling the EU, North America or Russia, please do tell.
I live in Indonesia, though I'm French.
When I'm bored and looking for some game apps, I check out the top downloaded apps on the Play Store. And let me tell you, when I see the amount of really crappy apps that make it to the top 50, I can definitely tell that I'm in an Indonesian Play Store. Is it a matter of really poor local taste or is someone employing cheap labor to promote nasty apps?
I read somewhere that you can avoid the region clock by tweaking the build.prop file but I'm not sure if it works for real

First of all I would like to clear ypur Doubt.
You Blaming Google Playstore then you are wrong as Restrictions of the app in Selected region is done by the developer of that app.
Who restricts some of the Regions while Publishing the app in the Playstore.
Most of the developer's select all but soke don't do it wont appear in those countries where the developer hasn't selected.
&
You cam also download the Apk of that free app and install it Manually.
All apps free are Available in Google.

Google is enforcing those restrictions. If the devs dont want somebody to download their stuff from a certain country, they should at least bother to give a reason why. If its about piracy, then must be really thinking that pirates are dumb and cant get ahold of the apk to reverse engineer it from another source. Really...
Also, I dont believe that the guys who made facebook app set the restrictions, I could be wrong. Why would facebook, which works outside europe, not have a free app that is available everywhere? It makes no sense. It does not matter really. I just wish this issue got big and maybe forced google to change their playstore policy. At least free apps should be restriction free.
The only way to install apks, is to scavenge for apps on XDA and other place, check them manually if they contain suspicious activity and hope they are not malicious.
To others.
Thank you for your responses. I will try to investigate about the build prop idea and VPN if they work.
If anybody got a windows device, does microsoft enforce this policy with their appstore, because apple, yes apple, has no such policy. I can confirm that based on an iPhone 4s I got to see. Sigh...

[Resolved] Help! Weird problem with text-to-speech setting

I ran into a problem with the recent update to the Google Text-To-Speech app.
I was testing out and trying to decide between the new high quality US and UK English voices. Somehow my default language for speech got locked into UK English: I can no longer change it to anything else, even though my default device language is US English and I have downloaded both the low and high quality US English voices.
See my screenshots - despite me changing my chosen language to US English in the Google Text-to-speech Engine settings in the 1st screenshot, once I hit the back button (or exit via the home / recent apps buttons), my default language reverts to UK English as per the 2nd screenshot.
Is there any system file I can edit to change this absurd behaviour? I'm rooted and willing to get my hands dirty...
UPDATE:
I played around with settings and managed to resolve the problem.
Clearing data from / un- and re-installing the app / restoring data from another device didn't work - what did work was choosing another default device language (NOT the voice language under Text-to-speech output). This somehow released the "lock" on UK speech and allowed me to choose US instead. I then reverted the default device language to US English.
All is now good in the world :victory:
Trying going to Google Text-to-speech or Google TTS, whichever one it is, in the app settings and clear data.

Anyway I managed to resolve the problem already. Gonna update the OP.
