[Q] GPS tips - Samsung Mesmerize

So does anyone have any tips/tricks to share of how to get GPS to work better on our phone? I've seen stuff for the other Galaxy S phones but none seem to apply to us. I've tried GPS Fix from the market and it doesn't appear to actually do anything at all. Apparently there's a hidden settings menu that can be changed but none of the codes work for us.

I second this....gps is just pure flaky

No idea what bars would have to do with GPS but thanks for sharing.
I got mine to fix in to my location by turning on GPS and then rebooting the phone. I opened up Maps and it locked on in seconds.

I've noticed that having wifi on, despite not even being connected to a network, tends to improve my gps accuracy when I'm having problems

No gps while overseas in airplane mode

I am overseas and can not get a gps lock. I am using stock ep3h. I didn't think this phone was tied so closely to agps. anyone had this issue or solved the problem
If u can get to the market, download faster fix, and set the region to the country you are in.... requires root

Faster fix will change your region if you can't use GPS after that you must have a different problem,

Not if you're using offline maps that are completely stored on your phone. There's no need for a data connection for those.
I also use the GPS in airplane mode all the time while I hike in the mountains where there are no cell towers or wifi, so I understand where you are coming from. I use google MyTracks all the time while running and hiking.
I am not sure how to fix your issue, but I have a few ideas for you to try.
First, when you move over 100 miles with a gps off and then turn it on generally you will need 45 minutes to 1 hour for the gps to realize it is somewhere new.
Download GPS Test and GPS Status. Give them each a try for 15 minutes outside. These apps have some strange magic that has fixed several of my phones just by running them for a bit.
Let me know how this works out.
Dave
I have had it outside for 2 hours with no lock. gps test is no help
any other suggestions
Lets get a little further into the issue then... You stated no lock. But did the GPS ever pick up any sats? If so what were the sat numbers?
I have seen 6 satellites only once without lock. I normally see 0 to 3 with zero most of the time. it is seeing some of the same satellites my other phone with a full lock is seeing but this phone will never lock. I just think the agps feature is so embedded that the receiver is lost without it's data. which sucks because I center still the offline gps features on this that my cheap world phone doesn't have.

[Q] why does my network location not update.

If wifi and gps are off my location will not update using the network location. For example when I am at work and I open maps it shows my location as being near my home. I have been searching and can't find a solution to this problem. I'm currently on the current oxygen rom but have had this problem follow through on other roms. Hard resets don't fix it. This started maybe a month ago and I made no major changes at that time that I can remember. I wouldn't care too much but my Tasker profiles no longer work since my phone doesn't know where it is anymore.
Thanks in advance.

Is the wireless network check under location & security?
Yes it is. It will update periodically but will "stick" at that location for hours/days.

Lemme know if you find a fix. In my case I know what messed it up, location spoofer app.
Hmmm. My wifi and gps work but not 3g. Strange behavior. I have also tried clearing data for google services framewotk. It will find my location after that but then "sticks" again. Maybe that will fix your issue. Not sure though.

I tried every possible thing, clearing Dalvik cache, user Data, etc.. loading different roms..
Here's the funny part, the issue started after I used that spoofer app.
You seem to have an issue to communicate properly with satellites or weak signals over 3G in that particular location, may be inside a building...
Have you tried using the sensor tools like - Androsensor ?
Signal strength doesn't seem to play a part. I'm at home and have full bars and my location still doesn't update. What does androsensor tell you?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I just tried androsensor and it shows the same inaccurate location as maps. There must be some file that gets corruoted/altered that doesn't get changed with rom flashes or factory resets. I don't know enough about that though.

I meant the signal strength for satellites not the network signal. Androsensor can tell you if you are connected to satellite(s) and how many.
May be your device doesn't connect to satellites or gets a weak signal, so when you try GMaps, it shows last location that map was able to resolve.
If you can try it some other phone at same location on same 3G network, at least you'll know if t's the phone or service issue.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but my problem isn't gps. The gps works fine. It's my network location that doesn't update when gps is turned off.

Okay, I'm going crazy with this issue. I reset my phone back to stock, the problem continued. I took the phone into a sprint store and they told me that I must have GPS enabled to show network location!? Clearly they don't understand what network location means. They also said that they confirmed this with customer service. They said there was nothing they could do and that the phone was working as intended. I argued but nothing was resolved, tough luck basically. I then went to the corporate store and they said the same thing. I have had a hero, epic, and my nexus, my wife has had an evo and has an epic touch, and my mom has an inspire and all of these phones network location updates to the current general location. The employees I spoke with insisted that their phones network location don't update.
So my new question is if there is something that states that network location should be updated every XX second or minutes or something like that so that I can show them that there is indeed a problem. Or is there something that sprint changed that is effecting the network location?
No man.... you are not going crazy. I am having the same issue on my Nexus S 4G. I have been trying to setup Tasker on my phone for days. But it never gets updated location from the Sprint network.
Any fixes, anybody?

[Q] Nexus S 4G - DATA DROPS

I have been having this problem with both of my Nexus S 4G ever since I got them 2 months ago.
My data drops out frequently and takes a while to get back up. If I have 4G enabled, then I have to manually reconnect it as it will not do it on it's own. This happens inside AND outside. Driving down the road or just standing in one spot.
I've tried all of the radios (basebands) and about 7 different ROMs and versions.
I've refreshed the data profile, PRL, and even tried the roaming Verizon PRL and Hybrid PRL.
Gone back to stock and tried everything from scratch. Still the same problem.
Dallas/Fort Worth Area
Network: Sprint
Baseband: D720SPRKE1
PRL Version: P:40447
I contacted Sprint and they just told me to update the profile & PRL.....
Any suggestions?
I'm not familiar with the CDMA nexus s, but are you able to change APN's? At one point I'd be able to connect to 3g (I have an I9020A), but every minute or so it would drop, so I fixed up the APN's for my carrier.
iv had a few data issues
forcing PRL and account updates has fixed it a couple of times
i'v bought used phones that iv had
to have sprint force update
im on LC1
[altho i cant tell any significant difference here]
and my prl is 61086
[a business account]
im currently on slim

is set to roam
is not set to home only
Am I the only one with this problem? As I'm typing this I lost data but still had 3 bars. I never drop calls but only data.
Help please. This is driving me nuts.

i go thru periods of it acting bizarre
try disabling wifi and reboot
this USUALLY fixes mine till wifi is re-enabled
and i drop the sprint connection a few times
riding around
it then fails to re-acquire the IP address.
look in your status and see if you still have an IP

does it do the same thing if you disable 4G?
I almost always have to use 4G (if possible) since 3G speeds are slower than dial-up.
I've tried rebooting and leaving 4G off, and still the same. Even tried going back to Gingerbread.

have you checked to see if you have an IP address

I have the same problems. From what I understand, its a problem with the hardware. I can confirm that's probably the case, because I've tried many different ROMs (stock, cm, etc...) and they all have the same radio issues (3g/4g and wifi)...
I have an NS4G in the DFW area and haven't seen the issues you're reporting. I'm currently on 4.0.4 with D720SPRLC1 baseband. Maybe I'm just lucky and have a good signal at work and home. It's very rare that I find an area of DFW where I don't get any data signal at all. Not sure what to suggest.
I get random drops too and i hate it. My 3g speeds are fairly good even above 1 mbps. Highest i ever got on 3g was 1.51 mbps
Mine will lose data if I'm in a coverage free area for an extended period of time, when I'm back in range 3g icon will show up just never reconnect. A reboot fixes it
Certain Areas
There are certain areas where I live that data just disappears. Although this is just a network thing I believe. It's weird though when I am driving it's like a 10 second drop and then all is good. Hope you get a solid fix!:victory:
Backup 4g Partition
REMOVED - was a bad idea.
I've actually replaced BOTH of the phones with brand new NS4Gs and they shipped with ICS.
Still the same problem.
This is driving me nuts. I was driving and trying to download Maps for the new phone from the Play Store and it took 6 tries. Kept saying RETRY.
What I've come to believe is happening is:
When 4G connects, 3G disconnects. When 4G drops (which is does frequently), 3G has to reconnect.
***Is there a way to keep 3G "on" in the background while 4G is connected?*** Maybe a way for the radio to transition back and forth?

Poor reception on S3 somewhat fixed

So let me start off by saying I have pretty bad reception at home with 4g.
I had an iphone 4 with a 3g range extender before I got the S3 and it worked great.
Found a free app called phone info
Went in under device information, selected cdma auto (PRL). I restarted my phone.
I now have 5 bars and perfect clarity.

I am usually about 2 bars where I am. Making this switch didn't change my number of bars or dbm. I'm glad it worked for you however.
I expect by making this change, you are basically downgrading to 3G until you set it back.
If you have a network extender for 3G then that's the fix. Not turning on thst option.

Unstable 3G performance
So I've had my S3 for a little over a month and have noticed the poor call reception that people have mentioned, especially in my office building. My old droid 2 global never had a problem, but when I receive calls on the S3 i have to walk to A window down the hall to keep the call from dropping. In an attempt to stay on the more stable 3G coverage in the area I installed phone tools and forced 3G. The problem I have now is that when I'm out of the office or house and not on wifi, I pull the phone put of my pocket to check something and there is no data connection at all now. Even if I open my browser and try to force a connection I get nothing. If I set the radio back to include LTE I have a reliable data connection everywhere but my calls are still poor.
Am i missing something when setting the phone to be 3G only? Thanks.
Ok i tried that phone info program and set it tup cdma auto or whatever, and no improvement. How do i get back to stock? I tried setting to lte/cdma/evdo but it does not stick. I tried uninstalling the program and the phone would stick to 3g. Help!

I wish Verizon and Samsung would just get together and try and resolve why their phones don't work well on Verizon's network. I figured they'd learn what they did wrong with the Nexus - pretty upset they never resolved it with the S3. I'm hoping the DNA/DLX from HTC doesn't have this issue. I liked the Samsung S3 in just about every way but the reception is wretched compared to Motorola phones.

It has to do more with your location I think..I work in the tri-county are of Detroit and my reception is excellent. Had a Cappy on ATT before my GS3 on Verizon and could not even get a signal in our office building..now on Verizon I'm at least 4 bars and full strength pretty much everywhere else..

It seems to have to do with the technology of the Verizon towers in your area. In LA with a motorola phone I lock on no problem and get great reception. With the S3 you'll switch from 4 bars - drop the call and switch back to 4 bars even when stationary. Motorolas don't have that issue with Verizon's network. I know several people with the S3 including people in CT and TX - all having the same issue on Verizon's network.

It is definitely possible.
I'm on AT&T and have the correct APN settings and have called AT&T with my IMEI. I have significantly worse signal than with my HTC One X. I am not comparing bars to bars, but rather where the signal drops completely. In places where I had low signal but still connected I now have nothing.
Straight talk using at&t Sim and notice radio drops..

T-Mobile on stock ROM i had my first signal drops.
I was fine (or at least never noticed them) from the time i got my phone (day one) without any drops here in orlando.
Drove over to Tampa/Venice Beach area this past weekend and noticed some drops. Had about 6 drops according to my battery stats in 2 days. i had good to excellent coverage the entire time except when it would drop comlpetely (outline of signal bars)
would connect in a couple seconds, but i noticed over night, it would drop for a pretty large amount of time (like 10-15 minutes at a time.)
Mmm defo seems like were all having the same issues, wonder what it could be
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I had this issue too, and here's how I fixed it:
By default LTE is enabled, meaning the phone will periodically scan for a LTE network. If you're in a big city, you're likely to find one. Your phone will attempt to connect. However, it fails, meaning it will have to rescan the HSPA bands to connect back. That results in a few seconds of no service. Why can't it connect to LTE? Because by default, the APN is not the LTE APN, for Rogers at least. I'd assume AT&T would be the same. You can test this by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, selecting phone info, and selecting LTE only. You'll see that there is no service. I tested this in an area I knew had great LTE coverage, and that led me to the conclusion that it's LTE causing the signal drops.
So how to fix? Simple, just change your APN to the LTE APN for your carried. To do that go to Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. If you're experiencing this issue on Rogers, change the APN field to ltemobile.apn. If you're on another carrier, you'll have to search for their LTE APN configuration.
After doing this your phone should start connecting to LTE again, and you won't get those annoying signal drops.

So yeah the next update will probably fix the issue. It's not so bad in the meantime, Lightflow sill notify you that your nexus has lost signal, and you still get the internet and incoming calls.
We're not alone. Supposedly Google is "aware" of the issue.
i've hcanged my setting from '4g' to '3g' to see if i notice a difference (hopefully will) then when 4g is released or i get a 4g sim, can move it back up
Yes, I'm having issues too. The real problem is the fact that I have a Wilson cell booster in my home (supposed to have up to 5000 square foot range) and my n4 had full bars most everywhere inside. With my n5 It shows 1 to 2 bars if I'm lucky and quite often drops to none! The only way to get full bars Is to stand right under the indoor antenna. Not impressed, and I sure hope this is fixable!

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I was wondering if people were still having problems. Once or twice during the day that I can see I will lose signal for a few seconds only to have it reconnect. Running 4.4.2 so the latest update did nothing to help the problem as far as I can see and I have messed with my APN settings. On AT&T. The Google thread seems to have a lot of different problems on the same thread, and it is a bit unclear if people are still having this problem. This is very annoying for such an otherwise spectacular phone. Thanks and sorry again for reviving the thread... :fingers-crossed:

Appreciate the speedy reply. Hope Google gets on this fast. I also have LTE connection issues which has plagued both this and my original device so I am pretty sure its a radio issue. The phone loves to stay on HSPA+ even when there is a decent LTE connection: it's last in the pack to connect to LTE and first to disconnect when compared to others on AT&T.

My N4 with a combo radio sticks to LTE a tad better than my N5 with stock radio. Sadly, morrislee hasn't fiddled and combo'd N5 radios, and I'm not sure they've been tested and sussed out like the N4 radios. Citing the fact some with issues have flashed all the radios so far with minimal success means we wait for Qualcomm, after Google kicks them in the you know where.
