When I use juicedefender's disable mobile data widget, the 3g icon goes away but I can still browse the internet. Is it not working?

You can turn data on and off. There is actually an HTC widget that toggles data on and off.
Go to the market there is an app that you can use to toggle on stock rom. Just search 3G.

I found a way to turn off 3g/4g and have Edge enabled by going to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > here you can toggle from WCDMA Only; GSM Only; GSM/WCDMA Auto (default). Selecting GSM Only switching my connection to Edge. How can we create a shortcut/toggle for this option?

There is no such option on the Inspire 4g.
*#*#4636#*#* is the option. Dial it. Go to phone. Scroll down. Select gsm only.

Yes. I use it to keep mine on gsm. I also used the stock widget to keep data turned off
Turning off 4G speed is easy. Turn on the phone, it doesn't exist
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Using: *#*#4636#*#*
Then selecting GSM does not work for me..still reverts back to 3G "H+)
Any other suggestions? Do I have to root to get access to all the grayed out network options?
Thanks
Like any stock carriers SMS service you don't need mobile data or wifi to send and receive messages, I believe they are sent over the background just by being connected to said carries network. Is there an app or is it feasible to send SMS over the network without charging me? I only get 200 messages/month and I currently use text plus and its a battery sipper. I hate the fact I also need power hungry 4g enabled on my phone just to get my messages. Any help? Thanks

Who is your carrier? Pretty sure you do not need 4G (or any data) to send/retrieve SMS, only MMS.
You can disable your 4G data to save battery power, but you can still get/make calls and send/retrieve SMS. I personally use a data on/off widget that I place on my home screen, which makes it real easy to turn on/off the data to save the battery. I only turn it on when I need to use the internet in some way (or for MMS). It's called Data ON-OFF by Antonio La Rocca. It's free, very simple and works great (widget even looks good and has a few skin options).
Or you can simply go into your settings to disable 4G/3G data manually. Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile networks -> and uncheck "Use packet data". This will leave only the basic connection to your carrier for calls and SMS. You will still get a prompt for MMS, but you will need to enable the data to download/view it.
I have yet to see one that provides true free txt, all i have seen require the use of data, so being near a wifi hotspot or enabling your data seems to be the only way to go, would be interesting to know if there is an actual free sms service without the use of data.
I know that I can use att SMS. I'm talking about a 3rd party app

My S4 One S automatically tends to switch to a 3G connection when its idle, and when i begin using it, it sends its data upload thru the 3G connection, WAITS to switch to HSDPA, and then pulls in incoming data. There is no incoming data on the 3G connection at all. Only on HSDPA.
I have googled enough, found this error on many devices, but I cant seem to find a fix.
Is there any way to completely switch to HSDPA to avoid the delay it takes to switch to HSDPA?
Or is there any way to make it receive data as well on the 3G connection?
I am using Android 4.0.4 on a Vodafone India connection in Chennai.
i believe if u disable "fast dormancy" then youll be able to switch and stay connected to HSPA... altho fast dormancy does help save battery if your carrier supports it
And how do i do that?

You can edit your build prop file with es explorer or if your on a Rom like viper there is an option in tweaks

So when the phone boots up, I have 4G connectivity. When I decide to turn on my Wi-Fi, use it for a little bit and then turn it off...I don't have any data. Data is on and I try toggling airplane mode as well. I just have bars for calls and sms. No data for surfing the web and etc.
Has anyone gone through this?
Happens on other ROMs for me as well.
What are your settings under mobile network settings network mode, system select and CDMA subscription?
