Ok hello im new to this whole rooting biz and i need help w/ ADB..
at first i thught i didnt need ADB but still downloaded and put it in the Android SDK tools folder.. the command prompt couldnt find my serial # .. it would go thru but each time it said list of attched devies it was blank , but i preceded anyway & i have come to XDA to get help.. i need help with ADB , just in case u get lost.. i am on an old computer a COMPAQ FS7600 from like 2002..
i snt understand why ADB ,wont go thru. im doing theunlockr.com's root since i found it easiest.
- Download the android sdk toolkit which contains adb. (http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html)
- Make sure your system contains the necessary usb drivers for your phone. (http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html)
- Enable usb debugging in your android device
- open windows command prompt (press windowskey + R, type cmd)
- move to ....\android\platform-tools\
- type adb shell
- you should now be connected to your device

Sorry about the post but I cannot find the post were it tells me how to install custom boot animations. I also need to be able to do the sounds. As far as I understand I have to put it in the media folder. I found the original one but it does not allow me to move it. I'm assuming I have to do it from recovery but I don't know how. Detailed instructions would be appreciated. I have a cold and the old brain is doing so well. Thanks

I was trying to avoid that because they do not have a way to undo s-off yet. Just incase my phone dies I dont want verizon to say I voided the warranty. Any way to do it without?
You can flash some of them from rom manager...that's how I did mine.
If you have rooted your phone, which you must have in order to install a custom ROM, you've already voided your warranty.
Adding S-OFF wouldn't change anything in the eyes of Verizon, and you can always drop your phone until it's physically broken if you need to take it in.
rom manager -> download rom -> Ihtfp69 -> boot animations -> download -> pick one

When I try to install from Rom manager it doesn't load it says verification failed or something. Does anyone know how to manually install Droid 2 boot screen.

Did mine 'manually', since I'm rooted I have clockwork mod installed.
1. Boot into recovery (clockwork mod)
2. launched android SDK adb daemon
3. moved file from 'tools' folder of sdk to the proper destination on the phone.
4. Done.

I'm not sure how to do step 2 your referring to. If you have a link to a thread that explains how to do that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you have to go to the android website and download the android SDK. Install it somewhere on your computer that's easy to access, preferably put the folder at the root of one of your hard drives.
You'll go into command prompt after that to do a lot of the work to transfer files.
So, make sure USB debugging is enabled (just in case) and boot your phone into cwm recovery. Connect the phone to your computer via USB.
in command prompt, cd to the android sdk's tools directory. From there, you can use the adb commands to transfer files.
So, for me, after connecting the phone I do the following in command prompt:
cd G:
cd androidsdk/tools
and then I use ADB to communicate with phone, first by verifying the phone is connected:
adb devices
(if adb is on your pc, it will auto run the daemon if it is not running)
If your phone shows up in recovery mode, you're set.
You may need to go into cwm and mount your system/sd card before transferring the file.
From there, you use adb shell to acess the phone's file systems.
If you put the boot animation to the phone you'll do something like (while in shell) mv bootanimation.zip system/somethingorother/bootanimation.zip
But don't take the above line as gospel. I dont remember the exact command line to use. Check the thread on "How 2 - ADB, Rooting...." for a list of commands in ADB shell and search for a webpage that gives basic linux commands.

Sorry to sound pig ignorant about phones but I am ... my expertise is in PCs. So anyway I want to upgrade the Hero with CyanogenMod.
I backed up my contacts, apps, etc and rooted the phone with unrevoked ... lost everything in memory in the process, but that's OK -- the important stuff is backed up.
Rebooted into stock 21. ROM and skipped all the new user stuff ...
OK, here's where I'm lost ... to load the CyanogenMod ROM I apparently need something like Amon-RA, but to load Amon-RA image file I need to install the SDK pack.
So I downloaded the SDK pack, but it is nothing like what is described in all the install SDK posts I've been able to find. What I have found are instructions about running ASroot and other files that don't exist in the SDK version I have.
So like what do I do now, more important ... is there an A to B thread for doing this mod starting from a stock phone, going to unlocking, than loading SDK, than installing Amon-RA (or equivalent) and than installing CyanogenMOD.
I know all this info is out there, but it seems like most of the files I've found don't interface well in the sense that the ones that talk about doing step one aren't terribly relevant to ones that talk about step 2, etc.

All you need to do with the sdk is download it and extract it. I just put it in the root of my C: drive. Then open a cmd prompt in windows by going to Start > Run > cmd (press enter). Then in the command prompt you need to change directories to the sdk folder you extracted. For example, mine is in C:\android-sdk-windows. I just type "cd c:\android-sdk-windows" then "cd tools" to get into the directory where you can run the adb program. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode by going to settings > applications > development > check the USB Debugging box. Then you can hook the phone up to the usb and run the command "adb devices". If everything is working correctly then you should see a device serial number show up. If that doesn't work make sure you have the htc drivers installed by downloading htc sync from their website and installing it.
Once adb can see the phone then you should run the command "adb shell" and then when you get a $ prompt type su in order to elevate to root. Make sure you put a recovery image on the phones sd card using step 4 from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 I think he has a link to download the recovery in that guide but just in case here is a direct download link for the recovery: http://www.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img Feel free to rename it to recovery.img so that the commands in the guide can be used as is.
Now you should be able to start at step nine from the guide in that thread (you should be in an adb shell when you start). It should be the adb command to flash a recovery image. Once you do that installing roms is as simple as putting them on your sd card and booting into recovery to select the flash option.
Ok so I've been looking around all over google and XDA for the correct way to install the usb drivers for adb and fastboot from sdk manager(r11) and there are no updated guides out there for the latest r11 sdk program... so here is my quick guide just to clearify how this is done on (Windows Vista/7) PC with Sdk r11!!!
Install Java and SDK
First Install Java jre, jdk... http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
install programs and restart if required...
Now go visit the SDK site and download latest version (r11).zip... http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Now unzip file directly to C: drive.. and rename folder to 'android'..
open 'android' folder and run 'sdkmanager.exe' install updates and packages than restart if neccessary..
ADB Driver install...
Now go to your device and enable 'usb debugging' located in settings>applications>development...
Now plug device into computer via usb and DO NOT mount device (storage) to computer!!
Now press START button on computer desktop..
Right-click on 'computer' and select properties..
Now select 'Device Manager' on upper left corner of newly opened window..
Look for device named 'Android' and open selection.. right click on under-link and select 'install drivers' or 'update drivers'...
Now select browse and go to this location than press ok..
C:/(sdk folder)/extras/google/usb_drivers
Now should say driver has been installed correctly..
Test method: Open CMD
cd/
cd (sdk folder)/platform-tools
adb devices
Should see device and number pop-up...
(ADB is located in Platform-tools folder now along with 2 .dll files needed for fastboot to work)
Fastboot Drivers Install
First powe off device, than power on holding (Back+Power)
Now plug usb cable from computer into device..
Do same exact method as 'ADB Driver Install' method..
(Fastboot drivers are located in same folder as ADB drivers)
Now to run fastboot mode in cmd prompt enter this..
cd C://
cd (sdk folder)/platform-tools
Should see device and number pop-up...
Alt method is to copy the 2 .dll files located in 'platform-tools' folder and paste them into 'tools' folder, than fast boot will run correctly off this in cmd prompt...
cd/
cd android/tools
fastboot devices
Should see device and number pop-up...
Also you could just go to ..
C:/android/extras/google in 'windows explorer'
and move the 'usb_drivers' folder to root of sdk folder (android) so then all the older guides out there for installing the drivers would actually kinda make sense.. lol

I completed the ADB section of your guide just fine and went to the Fastboot section. It says to power on using back+power. When I hold power+down volume (only option?) I end up in CWM Recovery.
Should I just power on normally and finish the guide or is there something else I should do?

well to install the fastboot driver you need to be in fastboot mode on your device... for the G1 it is back+power...
Ok, I tried it again and I left out a detail (sry). When I power on with pwr+left vol it gives me two icons. One is an Android in a box, which takes me to recovery. The other is an icon that says 'Downloading'.
This time I went to it and now I'm at a screen which says
ODIN3 Download Mode
(Protocal v2)
Reason: Force Key
Secure Mode: Nonsecure
Check Signature: Check

Ok, I hooked up the USB and went through the steps and typed in the first two commands and am now in CMD at:
C:\Android\platform-tools>
But when I type in the "..\tools\fastboot.exe devices" command it says its not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or bath file
Btw, after I connected the USB, I got an additional line of text under "Waiting for USB" that says "===> Connected! Press the [Start] of Odin3!!"
***Update
Ok, so I copied the .dll files into Tools and ran CMD again and this time I at least did not get that error message, but it displayed no output at all, other than to begin another prompt at:
C:\Android\Tools
And that's where I'm at now.
wel uhhmmm this guide is for the G1... lol im not really sure what downloading mode is... if that is your version of fastboot than just follow the B. Instructions for the ADB driver install... the directions are the same exact for both..
Heh. Yeah its all good. I was able to install CWM and Root it, but I would like to get ADB/Fastboot working. Thanks for your help and patience with me

i see many people on the G1 thread with sdk, adb and fastboot issues... FOLLOW THIS GUIDE!!! It is instructions for latest sdk Vr11... i promise this helps..

did you manually install the drivers?
adb is acceses in platform-tools directory and fasboot is in tools directory.. the drivers for each are located in extras/google/usb_drivers

I have the same problem:
I manually install the drivers choosen located in extras/google/usb_drivers on device manager
then it say cash: "windows did fond no driver for your device.
I tried with XP SP3, Vista, Seven: always same problem
What is your device, this guide is for the dream but the same steps can be used for other devices, but you need the proper drivers for your device

Problem getting adb installed.
Installed the JDK.
Installed the Android SDK, revision 15.
Now I am stuck, not sure how to install ADB, don't know if it's done from within the SDK manager.
I've got a Rogers i727R. It's running 2.3.5. It's the stock ROM, rooted. I was figuring that I would have to tick the checkbox in Android SDK Manager for 2.3.5 and download those components, and that would give me everything I need.
But there is no 2.3.5. There is 2.2, and 2.3.3, and of course Android 4.
I do have drivers for my phone installed through Kies if that matters. Any pointers in the right direction would be appriciated.

1- Like always enable your Debugging. you can enable that by going to your Settings -> Application -> Development
2- Install the android SDK . you can download it Android SDK
3- Extract the SDK to any folder, Example : C:\Android
4- Make sure you have the drivers installed- In that way your OS can talk to your phone!
now that everything is installed we can go ahead and perform a command :
1. Open the 'run' dialog by pressing the 'Windows' + 'r' buttons on your keyboard (minimize the browser & other non-windows programs) 2. cmd (this will open a DOS prompt) 3. cd c:\Android\tools (go to the directory where you extracted the SDK) 4. adb shell 5. Now you'll see just a '$' 6. logcat
You can now just press the power button on your phone to see what happens. It displays everything the device is doing.
So the thing is: leave your device connected for a while and see what is actually going on when you're not using it. Boom

just do it, it wont affect anything negatively
By the way, it worked great. I can now talk to my phone using the emulator on my PC. I see the list of adb commands, lots of stuff. Seems I can even install apk files, run a remove shell. Very cool.

this guide will allow all of you to move you applications to SD!
For EG : You are not allowed to the facebook app or HTC sync to ur sd card but after you follow this tutorial you will be allow to move them
before you start of you need these things
1.Your Phone :silly:
2.the adb utility Files(if you have SDK MANAGER INSTALLED you can find these under plat-form tools folder) and if you DONT ( you can download them, link are given BELOW )
3.USB CABLE
4.Your USB DRIVERS SHOULD BE INSTALLED
----(This tweak requires Android 2.2 or later)-----
Steps:
1.Enable USB DEBUGGING first..
(Open the Settings screen, tap Applications, and select Development,USB Debugging)
2.Connect Your Phone
(connect your Android device to your computer. Windows should locate the device and install the appropriate drivers automatically. If it doesn’t, you may have to download and install the appropriate drivers from your Android device’s manufacturer. Do not mount the device after connecting it – just plug it in.) ---- (FOR HTC USERS -- SELECT HTC SYNC )
3.if you have downloaded the files from the below link , extract them and open a command window there ( BY HOLDING SHIFT AND RIGHT CLICK >> OPEN COMMAND WINDOW HERE ) . if you already have the SDK MANAGER and Android SDK Platform-tools package installed , browse to the platform tools folder and open a command window there
4.Run the adb devices command and you should see your connected Android device.
5.Type the following command to set the default install location to your SD card:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
6.If you want to revert this change later and install apps to the internal storage by default, just retype the above command and replace 2 with 0

2-External
7.Disconnect the Phone .. Enjoy
