How can I allow my captivate to install 3rd party apps
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
use the program "superOneClick Root 1.7" to root and allow 3rd party apps.
the program is on XDA, use the search to find it. and get used to being told to use it....
you can also follow one of the sets of instructions in this thread if you want to get your hands dirty and/or understand what has changed on your phone to enable non market apps.

You can do it by reading stickied threads, searching, and posting in the right section

Let's say I have to do a reset and for some reason lost a backup. Can paid apps be downloaded and installed again?
It is my understanding that as long as you re-register your phone under the same account you can always redownload them in the downloaded section of the market

As long as you use the same Google Account yes.
Just go to Market, then Downloads, and all your purchased apps will already be listed there marked "Purchased" and you can re download them.
Great. Thanks.
Hmmmm.....there must be a sticky somewhere with all these basic questions answered. Problem is knowing which forum/thread to find them.
I'd like to spend an hour reading a tutorial or sticky thread for new users to Android. May prevent a lot of other simple questions like this.
I dont know how to write code. I just want to get some cool apps from other places. I have seen some post online about it being possible to load 3rd party apps without rooting. Any thoughts
Settings>applications>Unknown Sources (cheack box) tick it and your good to go
If I switch to AT&T and the Inspire rooted, will I be able to load non market apps without side loading??? I thought just rooting the device made it possible to download after market apps like I do with my T-Mobile Nexus One. Obviously never been with AT&T, any help would be welcomed for such a noobish question.
Yes. You can sideload without being rooted as well.

U would have to enable sideloading. It is restricted in these waters by at&t. There is a computer app on here. Search button?

SWM and the Inspire and the Amazon App store
I was able to load the Amazon app store with SWM, but I can't actually use the Amazon store to install anything, because it won't let me sideload anything. I suppose I could move those downloaded APKs from my phone to my PC so that I can SWM them on, but that seems like a pain.
While I'm moving from a Captivate to an Inspire, and I'm well versed in rooting and such from my experience there, I also bought that one used and didn't have a warranty to void. Since I actually have 2.2.1 stock on the Inspire, and I have a warranty, I'm hopeing to simply enable side loading so that I can easily use the Amazon store without rooting or doing anything else to void my warranty. At least without voiding it yet, I just got the phone today after all...
You stated you would be rooting your Inspire, so yes, you will have the ability to download 3rd party apps directly from your phone, through a 3rd party app store, etc... no restrictions (just make sure to check "Unknown Sources- Allow installation of non-Market applications" in your App. settings menu).
Now if you decided to keep your phone unrooted, you would STILL be able to install 3rd party apps, but individually and only via the help of a computer. By this I mean that you'll need a program on your PC called Sideload Wonder Machine. You put the .apk file in the program and make sure your phone is plugged in and hit "Go".
You can load any apk onto your phone (even WITH AT&T restrictions) this way but if you were to load something like the Amazon Appstore, you would only be able to browse it's apps. If you attempted to install an app from the store it would say something like "no installing 3rd party apps kthxbye".
But you're rooting so yes, you'll be fine.
Just as the subject says... How can I go about removing preloaded apps? Annoying seeing programs running that I've never launched before.

That's one of the things that requires root privileges on the device, which is not yet available.
It is however possible to disable them. This will not free up the storage space that these apps consume, but it will prevent them from running, displaying anywhere etc. Temp root is required. Once you have the root prompt, type
pm disable <packetnamehere>
Use Quick Info Pro to find the package name of the apps you want to disable. There is a thread about apps which are safe to disable in the Development forum.
You can find the complete guide here:

As said above. You can only disable atm. Removal requires full root.
I install third-party apps from App stores like Amazon Appstore and Aptoide (nothing illegal). I recently read an article where it stated that it is very easy for users to download apps that contain keyloggers due to how easy it is to get a keylogger on an app. I'm guessing not all apps are clean even from Google Play, and they most definitely aren't from third-party app stores. Do I need an antivirus like Avast! to ensure everything I download/install are clean and safe?
Also, what's up with all the scary permissions that many apps (even popular ones from top developers) need in order for to be able to use them? For example, Pocket wants to read my contacts, Aptoide wants to read my phone status and identity, and Facebook wants to know everything about my phone. Should I be concerned?
Thanks.
P.S. Is there a way to automatically update third-party apps? Do all apps typically have their own self-updater, or am I required to manually check through Google whether there is a new version for that particular app?
This doesn't belong in general.

Where should I have posted this thread? Sorry, I'm new to XDA.
Regardless of where you put the thread, antivirus isn't really necessary (at least, in my humble opinion). If you are careful in downloading your third-party apps, you should be fine.
This thread does not belong in the 'General' section, it either goes in the 'Question and Answers' section the 'Security Discussion' section or the 'Android question and answers' section (assuming you are running Android) I would message a mod to either move the thread to one of the sections or have them lock it and then search xda, I know your question had been answered before in many threads. Just use the search button to find your answers or type your question with 'XDA' at the end on Google and search using that if you can't find it using the native XDA search feature.
