[Q] How change default behavior of Phone icon? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
On my Nexus S (2.3.2 stock rom) when I press Phone Icon always opens Favorites' Tab.
I'd like to open the dialer (Phone's Tab).
Can I change this default behavior?
cheers

It had been discussed before, check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=977010

Hi,
I checked your suggestion and there is no solution there, only the same question.
I tried Any cut and Desktop Visualizer but they don't do what I want.
cheers

First off, I have no clue how this got changed for you because I've owned four android phones and none of them have done that. Whatever though. I don't know of a way to change it on stock. CM7 allows you to change it.

@kenvan19
How do you do that on CM7?

It seems to have changed with the 2.3.3 update. Most likely a glitch as it now takes you to the same place that the contacts app does. I didn't notice it at first because I use launcher pro which still takes me to the dialer because I set the shortcut before 2.3.3 there are dialer apps in the market you could try.

Should be in preferences for the dialer. I can't remember what it specifically is.

Couldn't find it

I found the answer!
Step by step:
1 - On home screen press Menu
2 - Open Manage apps
3 - Click on Dialer (the green Phone Icon)
4 - On section "Launch by default" click on "Clear defaults" button
5 - Go to home screen again (press Home button)
6 - Open the dialer and open Phone tab
7 - Dial any number and press the green phone icon to call this number
8 - At this moment you will see the dialog message "Complete action using" (Dialer or SkypeOut) -- Humm..I have Skype installed here.
9 - Choose the Dialer and check the box "Use by default for this action" and save.
10 - Now you can hang up and smile
11 - Press Phone Icon again and you will see the Dialer instead of Favorites Tab or Call Log Tab.
cheers

Thanks for the help.
Cheers

Man, thank you! That's amazing! Worked like a charm! It's brazilian power huhu

It is a Google's fault. There is no metion on Android 2.3 Manual about this procedure.
And I found another bug, I guess. My Dialer is opening Phone Tab, like is expected to be. But I had added some favorite contacts.
After that, the Dialer behavior changed and now it opens Call Log tab instead of Phone tab.
So, I had to execute the steps again.
BTW, I'm using 2.3.2 stock rom and until now there is no OTA here
cheers

[Q] How do I reset complete action using settings

I installed Launcher Pro and as expected, whenever I hit the home key, a dialogue box pops up and asks me "Complete action using". My choices are LaucherPro and TwLauncher.
I would like to select LauncherPro and set that action by default, but lets say I want to go back to using the default launcher. How do I reset that default setting?
Did a search, couldn't find anything, must be too simple for most...
This has actually been brought up a number of times, so I have a hard time imagining you searched much.
Either simply install "Home Switcher" from the market place or go to Settings--->Applications--->Manage Applications--->Launcher Pro and click "Clear Defaults"
This is how you would do it in just about every android phone, but since you're running the Vibrant according to your signature, if the exact actions aren't the same, find the way to get to "Manage Applications" and go from there

[Q] two questions one thread

only thing that catches my eye from the kitkat launcher is the google search bar on screen (SAY OK GOOGLE) will that be later implemented into a zip for other launchers? i can always just click on the mic but saying that makes me a cool alley cat .
how come some nexus files/zips are able to be flash or install into our verizon gs3 without messing nothing up? time to time i check out there theme sections but dont wanna flash anything cuz im afraid it might brick my fone since its not a d2vzw file .
Chances are you won't see OK Google coming to other launchers from what I've read. Apparently Google made that and the Google now screen you can swipe to proprietary code.
As to the other, it really just depends. If it's just an app or theme you'd see mixed results. Just make sure you're making backups. If it's a rom or kernel or something, stay away.

You can have that same launcher, it is called the Google Experience Launcher, and is located Here. You no longer need the Google Search App from that page, as long as the Google Search App on your device is up to date. You also have the option of a modified version in the Play Store called KitKat Launcher+, HERE
When I install the GEL on stock 4.1.2, after pressing the home button, I was given the option to select what launcher I used. For some reason when I installed it on stock 4.3, I was not given that option, and had to go into the application manager to fix it.
Press the menu key, and select "Settings"
Press "Application Manager"
Slide over to the "All" tab
Scroll down to "TouchWiz Home"
Select "Clear defaults" under the "Launch by default heading"
Now when you press the home key, you will be given the option to select what launcher you want to use
When you first get into the launcher, you will notice that the microphone in the search bar is hollow, this means that the "Ok Google" function is not currently working. To get this to work, you need to
Press the menu key
You will see three options on the bottom of the screen "WALLPAPERS" "WIDGETS" "SETTINGS"
Select the "SETTINGS" tab
Select the "Voice" menu
Select the "Offline speech recognition"
Select the "ALL" tab
Press the English (US)
Press "OK"
Select the "AUTO-UPDATE" tab
I selected the second option, because I am never on Wi-Fi, you can leave it on Wi-Fi only if you are always on it
Select the "INSTALLED" tab
Press "English (US)
Press "Download"
When it is done downloading, the microphone in the search bar should be filled in, and you can now say "OK Google" to activate it.
As for your other question, it all depends on what the files are. If it is a system or framework file it most likely can't be flashed, someone might be able to port it over to work.

[Q] Apex launcher users: long press menu?

Hello,
This is a question for apex launcher users: do you have a menu appearing when you long press an icon on the desktop? With "remove", "uninstall", "edit", etc? I'm pretty sure that I used to have this menu but it doesn't appear anymore: I just have a "remove" option on top of the screen.
What if you long press and drag the icon: does this "remove" option appear? (and the menu disappears?)
Reinstalling apex launcher didn't help and apex developers couldn't help me either (it seems that on my phone, apex always think that I'm dragging the icon)
I have a nexus 5 with android 4.4.4
Thank you
Go to apex settings->behavior settings.. And tick enable quick access
Don't miss to hit thank button if it helps
Yes it helped a lot!
I'll hit the Thanks button as soon as it appears (it seems I need to have a minimum number of posts)
Thank you!

Screen Recorder Not Showing Prompt

Hello. I'm new here and I really need your help. Recently bought Huawei Mate 9 and I cannot use the screen recording feature. Whenever I click the icon on the status bar, my phone only goes back to the home page and is not showing the prompt to start recording the screen. I also tried the knuckle screen record and the Volume Up + Power button and same thing happens. My screen only goes back to home and does not show any prompt to start screen recording.

Have you turned off window animations in developer mode? Put them back on. At least to .5x
Where can I find that setting sir/maam. Still having this problem. Thanks so much for reply.
You have to enable the Developer options.
Settings > About phone > Build number
Once you’ve found the Build number section of the settings, tap on the section 7 times. After two taps, a small pop up notification should appear saying "you are now X steps away from being a developer" with a number that counts down with every additional tap.
The thing is if you don't know where developer mode is, it means you did not turn off animations in developer mode in the first place ?

Hi - I had this issue as well with my Mate 10 Pro and I found out a way to fix mine: Go to Settings > in the search bar type "Dropzone apps" > Dropzone apps
This sets the permission for individual apps to display over other apps. In "Dropzone apps", find "Screen Recording" and turn on the permission. This fixed my problem. Hope this helps you too!

Nova Launcher:Disable search apps pop up that comes up when long press in the dock

Hello. I just installed Nova Prime 5.4-beta 4 on my LG G6. I am trying to figure out how to turn off/ disable the feature where when you long press somewhere in the dock area a "search apps" screen pops up rather than the normal widget/ wallpaper/ settings menu. It only does it when I long press in or near the dock, but since this is where I am use to long pressing to change wallpaper, or add a widget I keep getting this pop up instead. I have looked all through the settings and cant find it. I read that somewhere in the gestures menu there is suppose to be a long press menu, but if thats true I dont have that on mine. Ive added a screenshot to show you the pop up I am referring to. Thanks

Thanks. Im actually not talking about the home button. Ive got the long press home button to open search. What I mean is when I long press in the area where I have highlighted the 2 pink lines on the attached screenshot it opens the search apps menu also in the screenshot. But if I am able to press somewhere in the blue area above the pink lines I get the widget/ wallpaper menu. Its a bit hard getting the right area. I contacted Nova about it and they said the only way to disable that is to turn off the swipe up to access the app drawer feature. So I just try to long press just slightly higher in the area I highlighted blue. Hope this makes sense.

That actually worked. Thanks. Made the long press area a little smaller, but it stopped that menu from popping up. Thanks again!

Hi XDA Forum,
Here's a Nova alternative setup I like that will disable opening the the Search App form when you accidentally short tap the Home button . This setup also allows you to keep the Swipe Up for apps and the little " ^ " indicator above the Home button to open the App drawer when you actually want to get into the app drawer:
1. Nova Settings | App Drawer | Gestures | Swipe to open/close = On and
Swipe indicator = Enabled .
2. Nova Settings | Gestures | Home button | Nova | select None, and
"Only on main home page" = disabled .
This setup also seems to disable that "2 pink lines" area immediately above the home button, but below the " ^ " indicator, that Gam3r 4 Life showed in a pic above on 30th August 2017, 12:05 AM.
Regards . . .
