Important setting removed with 2.2 - Captivate General

I was just informed that Froyo 2.2 has removed an important setting from our phones, the ability to turn off geotagging of pictures taken with the Captivate. Read about the dangers here:
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2010/10/07/gps-on-cell-phone-photos-can-put-you-in-danger/
This basically renders the camera useless for posting pics to social networking sites like facebook without making those pics vulnerable to disclosing personal info. This is unacceptable and Samsung should immediately release an update to fix this. I suggest we contact Samsung and let them know about this potentially dangerous issue and insist they rectify it ASAP. Start by going here:
https://contactus.samsung.com/customer/contactus/formmail/mail/MailQuestionProduct.jsp?SITE_ID=1
Here's the message I sent them, you can copy and paste it.
The recent update of the Captivate to Froyo 2.2 has apparently removed the ability to stop photos taken with the device from being geotagged. This option is important for those of us who upload photos taken with the phone to social networking sites from being vulnerable to giving out personal information. This is a very real danger and Samsung should immediately provide an update that will restore this ability to Captivate users.

In the meantime, how about turning off the GPS as a workaround when about to take a pic

You would have to turn off GPS and location services and then remember to turn them both back on, which is a pain. I found a solution for those of us on custom Froyo ROMs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949566
I'm going to try it, but this does not help those on unrooted stock Froyo. Samsung needs to fix this.
EDIT: Installed the zip from the above link and it works fine. Still, Samsung should not have removed this feature.

BTW, airplane mode does not, in my experience, disable geotagging for some reason. My only thought is that the phone is storing the last known location. The only thing that stopped the geotag was disabling location services.
I installed the modded camera.apk and it's working great on my rooted stock 2.2.
One thing I've found is that my battery is happier with location services turned off. I'd love to figure out how to use Tasker to turn location services on when I'm in Maps or Navigation or at some regular interval so my weather widget can update.

Can u post the camera apk here please.
Found it

now that is some useful info. thank you

Sometimes I like to geotag..however the other day I took a picture and the correct location showed up.....later on when I looked at the picture the geotag info changed.....any ideas why this would happen?
I kill coneys, not phones.

Thanks for the heads up, I never noticed this either... I gotta give this info to a few friends who are still using the official Froyo rom on their Captivates... I hope Samsung pushes out a fix for this ASAP (yea, I'm not holding my breath), it really is a huge privacy concern.

Maybe add this link to the OP, too, so it's right there when people start reading the thread?

Facebook in share option is still there in camera app. I dont need that geotagging thing.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Well, ya installed that camera - now we need to remove Flash option

nice catch

BTW, GPS is not the only way the Captivate geolocates the pics. Mine is almost always turned off and all the pics I took lately were indoors; still, they were geotaged. It appears to be using cell towers as the position on the map was a bit off and exactly located where the towers are in my neighborhood.

Yes the only way to turn off geotagging is if all location settings (gps and wireless networks) are turned off. Wonder why this hasn't made news sites like phandroid etc...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

I was looking through a few pictures in my gallery, and for a phone with a non-functional GPS system, the geotags are surprisingly accurate. In the gallery there is an option to view each picture on the map, and Google translates the latitude and longitude into street addresses. A picture taken in my office (no possibility of GPS location, and tower location is only accurate to 1700m) shows a tag right in front of my building. A picture taken in my friend's house (a house apparently made of lead, as no one can get cellular service there) has the next door neighbor's address on it.
However, pictures taken at a time when I had the app Bluetooth GPS Provider running show no coordinate information at all, instead displaying "location unavailable" or something to that effect. I use an external GPS receiver with my phone, and Bluetooth GPS Provider feeds the data from the receiver to the Captivate. Apparently, this service prevents the camera from geotagging whatsoever. If anyone is incredibly concerned about geotagging, toggling this app on could be a workaround.
Unfortunately, I can't read the pages linked in the OP right at the moment, and it's possible this question is answered somewhere in one of those articles. But I'm guessing the geotag coordinates are saved in a picture's EXIF information. Does all of that really persist through Facebook's image conversion process? When you upload a file, it's resized, recompressed, and renamed. I'm surprised that the EXIF metadata is saved after all that. I really had no idea!

Generally it does. I use 'picsay pro', and find that the location info is preserved when I change the image size.

The EXIF data is preserved, in most cases, and not just on facebook. It happens with Photobucket, Flickr, Kodak and almost all photo sharing sites. I saw a news report where Adam Savage of the TV show Mythbusters had innocently posted a pic of his vehicle onto a social networking site. Unbeknownst to him it had GPS info in it, which turned out to be right in front of his house where the pic was taken. A fan drew his attention to it and he was astonished to realize that he could have had some deranged stalker show up on his doorstep (ala My Sister Sam actress Rebecca Schaefer) because of an innocent photo he posted on a website. While this is not being reported much in the mainstream news, it is not a secret. The DOD is so concerned that it requires that servicemen on active duty not use these phone features while deployed or while on base due to the risk of giving away confidential information. Check out the pdf file at this website to see how our military is being informed about this.

This is not true. No facebook photo has metadata in it, it's stripped out in the upload process. I am using firefox right now and I have an add-on called EXIF Viewer, and I have tested this. Same goes for photobucket and Imgur. Most photo upload sites like photobucket and flickr(the feature is optional here) scramble the metadata when they are uploaded. The lady in the story used twitpic, which clearly doesn't erase exif data on upload, but there are some nice little bits of software that do. If you save a photo in photoshop, for example, you have the opportunity to set the metadata setting to 'none'. Then when you save it, it does not contain any of the identifying tags.
The point is to be responsible for your own data and information that you share on the net or in any pseudo-public setting. Ignorance is no excuse.

I have several pictures taken over the last few weeks. I keep GPS off, but locations using WiFi or Wireless Networks on, and all of my pictures show location unknown.
Also, I installed the modified camera.apk from SGSTools, can anyone confirm which version it is?

+1. Most responsible photo sharing sites strip out the location data. But you are responsible for the content you share. So even if the Captivate no longer supports the option, there are likely other ways to keep your data safe. Also, sounds like an opportunity for someone to make an app that automatically cleanses EXIF data according to your preferences.

Android devs, some ideas for you.

Hey all
I hadn't been on these boards for sometime, but you all know how it goes.... get a new phone, void the warranty right away by doing neat tricks you pick up in xda-dev forums.... or is that just me?
Well anyways, I've got 2 request for those devs that need ideas for some apps (I know there's at least 2 threads started by others that deal with this, but my requests don't fit either of the threads I've seen). First off a GPS data logger would be terrific, the camera on this phone is not bad at all, so it would be cool to be able to tag pictures with geographical data, better yet is to be able to tag any picture by using time/date of creation. This way you can take pictures with you're regular camera and still tag them (we all know the g1's battery isn't exactly going to be winning any marathons just yet).
The other idea centers around voice dialing. I'm loving this phone, but everytime I need to dial a # I miss my wizard; why you ask? well because anytime I would dial one of my contacts I would use voice command to dial the #. Now I've tried the voice dialer on the g1... not impressed, I mean it's like WAY OFF. How does "call home" translate to "call cheche"???, worst still is a cough get's translated into dialing "732 277 2222". Still I know that with some practice I'll figure it out. What's the problem you ask? well the whole point of having voice dialing is having the least amount of physical interaction with your phone to dial, at least that's what I think. As those of you that have tried it know, you either have to long press the call button, or worst still go in to the menu to start the voice dialer. On BT headsets the voice dial button doesn't do anything at all (tried 4 different ones), and the wired headset the button pauses music if tapped, while long presses start up the music player, and maybe it FF tracks while playing, not sure. Anyways without further ado, either a voice dialing app (unlikely I know), or an app that can change the assignment of hardware buttons. Can I actually make this change with AnyCut?.... if so I just feel I've type so much in vain
Anywho, recap:
1) GPS data logger.
2) Voice dialing app, or more realistically app to change hardware button assigments.

GPSTracker dont allow Geo Tagging of Photos
I know, but I though he just needed to track his position so he would manually add the tags to the photos when home.
He mentioned "just a regular camera"... He would just use the timestamps on the pictures and the tracker data...
It has logging capabilities? I think I must have read the description wrong then. That's very possible since I had just gotten home after a grueling 14 hr shift. Well I'll give it a try then. Still some options wouldn't be bad.
Yes, it takes a sample of your coordinates and speed every xx seconds and uploads it to a site. xx is configurable.
You can visit the site and see all your positions and velocities on a map.

Yeah I tried it last night, this can definitely work. I wouldn't mind if there was some way to tag them on the phone itself..... yes I know humans are impossible to please.
Umm it tags your location data already... when in camera app hit menu settings and store location in pictures. Which records location in the picture data.
For anyone that wants to set it up to store location for other cameras... I would say take a pic with the g1 where you take a pic with another camera. For right now that is.

Get the f*ck outta here!!!! LOL! Truth be told I just took a sample pic with the camera to check out the quality. As you can tell I didn't bother to press the menu button. As far as other cameras goes, I think GPS Tracker is a better choice, well for me it is. It can export to the travel log, so it's much easier. This way I just need my G1 to be on me, and with the app running in the background. I think I better think about getting an extra battery before that though.
Request??
Now that we have root and bb linked to the system. Is somebody working on an application with a gui to first list services and applications running. Then to stop/kill services and applications. Possibly with safe guardiing the specific kernal process' that will cause headaches? Could be usefull while running programs such as myspace, steel, pacman and the many other applications that never fully close once run and slow the G1 to intolera
Intolerable speed. My two cents
Well memory up professional might help out; although, the process is automated, so it's not like you can choose what to close. Still, for what I've heard Android supposedly does a good job of making memory available. Try it out though, it might help you.

Is there Live Tracking Software?

I'm looking for live tracking software. Something that shows the location of another phone on a moving map. I know that there are tons of apps to send coordinates via sms or show it on a web site. What I am looking for is software that shows the other phones location on a map just like a navigation program shows your location. I am assuming that it would use a data connection and that's fine I have unlimited on all three phones. It would be extra cool if it would show my location too. I remember seeing commercials where older (non-PPC phones) would do this.
PS. pay or freeware, it doesn't matter.
try glympse its free, you can find it on marketplace or http://www.glympse.com/ this seems like what your looking for. it works great, you can send a glympse to anyone and they can see you live as your move. It works best when you load the link using skyfire so you can see the actual website version . But if the other person has glympse installed they can see you move in real time that way too.
I haven't used it, but from what I've read, Google LATITUDE will do that.

latitude only sends updated gps information every 2 minutes. glympes send out information in real time and also tells you how fast the person your tracking in mph
i use GPSToday from geoterrestrial.com, depending on your settings and the availability of a cell signal you can update at 1 minute intervals with a fairly high degree of accuracy. i enjoy having my wife track me from home as im out roaming about.

Try GPSToday (free)
http://www.geoterrestrial.com/
or download straight to your device at http://m.geoterrestrial.com/
After installation you can create a private group from one phone, and invite the other 2 phones to join it. Then all 3 phones can see each others location on the map and also share points of interest/pictures etc, privately.
The group map can also be viewed on the desktop after logging in at the website.
Another GPStoday user here. It also Geotags your photos and you can write log files.

[APP] MobileWebCam (2G/3G/WIFI, no PC or UMTS router required!) v3.13

There are a lot of fine webcam (with video!) apps in the Market. But I found none which can be used with just a phone without any computer or wifi connection and placed in your car, weekend home, garage, ... to upload pictures to a server in defined refresh times. So I built this app. It is not finished but good enough for a lot of things.
For easy setup with a nice user interface have a look at sensr.net - they offer camera webspace and the ftp setup with MobileWebCam is very easy. For even more possibilities like gallery-hosting, hardware motion detection and housing have a look at opensmartcam.com ... they even sell or rent complete cameras based on MobileWebCam.
Edit: The app can now also automaticilly email the pics, upload to ftp or simply store them on sdcard. Also a manual mode is new for when you are running around taking pictures to be uploaded to your website/email account on the go with one simple tap.
Dropbox usage also possible now!
Invisible Background mode available now to save power or hide the cam. Autofocus can now be used in and the camera can be remote-controlled by sending SMS commands to your phone.
I will use this with an old phone with broken touch input (but luckily a dpad) and a simple free sim card wich has 30MB data traffic free/month (don't know if providers in other countries offer something like that). So I can have about 20 picture refreshes a day at a location with no WIFI or 3G (and of course no cable/dsl/...). FOR FREE! In the App activity times can be set so no black night views. No WIFI needed, just power to keep the phone running (I wonder how long it will last .
Also I use this with my main phone to quickly show my wife the kids playing on the playground, watch the garden when I am working inside and stuff like that. For this use case an email notification can be sent containing a link for her to view on her phone or pc at work.
Should run on Android 1.5 up (what causes the camera options to be very few and landscape mode only). So you can buy a somewhat broken phone on ebay (speakers not needed, display doesn't have to work well, ...) and have one of the easiest and cheapest webcam setups possible (I think ...
For your personal website webcam you need a php capable server somewhere where the picture can be refreshed. There you have to place the two files (mobilewebcam.php and index.html) attached to this post. Since version 1.3 you can also sent the pictures to an email account or simply store them on sdcard. From version 1.6 on ftp upload is also possible.
This also can be combined with my WebLiveWallpaper App easily and your webcam is then visible on your homescreen background all day.
I have uploaded my webserver files for a simple gallery and timelapse video on a google code project: please let me know if you can improve it!
Most of the sourcecode can now be found at http://code.google.com/p/mobilewebcam-android/ ... so if you need special stuff simply add it yourself and publish your changes! Please help me fix all the bugs and send me a notice if you repaired or improved something. There is so much crappy hacked code in there ...

Though you'd need to tweak this to create random directories or accounts or whatever, I've got a pretty heavy duty Linux server with a fat pipe I'd be willing to let you tie your program into so people don't have to have their own server. Think it over, let me know.

Sounds great! Thank you! I already thought about using my little webspace and allow only one refresh a day or so to enable people to try the app but that will be so much better! I will think about the identification/account - may be best the server creates them and my app just asks for a new user - and come back to you when I have got a little more time to put that into the app.
Is there a how to.. i can't get this to work correctly.. i always got "something went wrong"

chowned html dir and all good now
works great, both the android part and the server part.
What might be great:
-resolution selection - when Im no wifi it could potentially upload higher resolution
-it should be possible to turn off those popus regarding uploaded picture
Very nice App, just a small thought:
Your php script does not check for any attribute other than if there is a filename on the uploaded file.
So everyone who knows the URL to your "mobilewebcam.php" can upload anything to your server which is a major security flaw.
Just think about those nifty little php-shells to get complete control of it and steal stuff like databases, not to mention illegal stuff fileshared via your server...
All you need for this is a (really) simple html-file with a file-upload form in it which targets your "mobilewebcam.php" file.
Your script should have some filesize-limit and allow no other file formats than *.jpg (also not something like x.jpg.php).

some design thoughts
I had an idea similar to this, just haven't had time to start developing anything... here were some of my design thoughts:
--motion detection to webcam device
--audio detection to webcam device
--accessible via android app (not just a php webpage)
--add notifications to android app for motion/audio detection events
--support for multiple webcam devices
The server requirement seems ok - it allows for a single point of integration for both clients and webcam devices. It could also provide a way around firewalls if the server could be deployed to a public ip.
Thank you for your comments! Will try to answer all in one post:

Resolution selection will be added next, yes. May be at first only a checkbox for small/large because I can do that quickly (my time for this app is soo limited - I want to make the other one fine first).
The popups already do not show up when refreshing very fast but yes, a checkbox for that is done faster than typing this so I will add it

Yes I know! You are totally right! That is why I put these "please understand first" texts in the market description. But supplying a more complicated php file will only make understanding of it more difficult. I added a comment to the market desciption now. Motion and audio detection would be possible (not too difficulty I think) from preview picture and mic but at the moment I really do not have enough time for that - I would love to!
Remote control also is a feature I would like (I would personally use it for my weekend home cam!) but I didn't come up with an easy way to communicate with the phone.
An Android app to access the webcam IS there: it's my other app (ignoring the old games) WebLiveWallpaper which also contains an App to view stuff like a picture frame and may even get a widget for this later.
The php server posted picture is the only way to make it work on many mobile providers because as far as I know there is no way for the phone to get an easily public accessible ip. Also it is the easiest way to make you webcam visible for more than a mobile bandwidth limited number of viewers.

Unfortunately I have to say no. Only very fast refresh if you set the refresh time to 0 and your device and server are fast enough to handle all the picture uploads.
I am not sure real streaming could be done with simple php. Maybe MJPG? But then a "constant" connection between server and app would be required which is somehow against the whole idea of this APP to be a lowcost/lowbandwidth mobile solution.
For real streaming I recommend IP Webcam and others from the market (but they will not work with most mobile providers as far as I know).
Edit: Future ideas ... It would be possible with to generate an mjpg with the server php and make it available to the watchers with a time delay - so then you have some kind of from time to time (switch to next mjpg) broken streaming (and require a lot of server power/bandwidth) with the image uploads of a camera like my app. Just an idea I will not implement - at least not now - but someone else could. One part is already done here!
thanks man i hope you add a streaming app that would be epic awesomeness
i tried to set it to 0 but lol its taking pictures but not uploading because the app is meant to take pic and then it will be uploaded it because its 0 sec it cant handle the capture and upload at the same time it needs sync
i will try this app..thank you
everything works fine. I have the ownership of the folder too. it did uploaded the picture
BUT I cant view the picture from both index.html or when I double clicked the pic file. it says I dont have the permission to view this pic but when I check the owner it was me. that is so strange.

Is it possible that you also have to give it everyone view rights to be able to view it in the browser not just yours which the browser doesn't use/know? Or did I get the problem wrong?
What is the exact error message/code?

Really weird Gallery Issue with a Stranger's Photos on my Phone...

So, I just noticed something REALLY weird today and I don't know what to make of it...
I installed a new app on my phone (Lyft) and it asked me to setup a profile photo. Okay, no problem. I click the option to select photos from my existing collection and it takes me to the gallery to select a photo. I'm scrolling down, looking for a good photo when I suddenly come across photos that I did not take. There's about 30 of them and they look like they were taken at a Energy Conference in Beddington, UK on November 26th. I live in Washington State, USA and have not been anywhere near the UK and my phone has not gone missing or been out of my sight for the last few weeks. This is strange and creepy. How are someone else's photos on my phone?
I start doing a bit of investigation. I close the Lyft app and open my gallery app on my S9+. I scroll through all my photos, but these stranger's photos are not showing up no matter how I sort the display settings. I open up another app (Uber) and go to change my profile photo. I opt to choose from my gallery and there's the stranger's photos again. I notice that the file name, file size and date of the photo is provided in this view, so I connected my phone to the PC and ran a search for some of those file names and came up with nothing. I searched my phone using my file manager app and also found nothing.
Someone on Reddit recommended I try using my email app to send myself the image so I can investigate the details. This worked, but only deepens the mystery! It seems like the photos were taken with an Olympus Digital Camera (not even a smartphone!) and the date taken was from way back in 2006!?
At this point I'm out of ideas. I have no clue why these mystery photos are on my phone and can't find out how to find/delete them or how they got on my phone in the first place.
It's so freakin' weird! I'm sharing a few screenshots here in case it helps anyone else identify my issue. If anyone has thoughts, please share them.
P.S. My phone was purchased new over a year ago. If anyone cares, I posted this on Reddit before coming here seeking additional help. You can see the Reddit thread here:

wonder if they're embedded in the apps?
One possible reason is that it's just downloaded by some other app, e.g. Facebook downloading photos from a post that you came across. If you don't remember anything related, did you ever have anyone else using your phone?
The Samsung gallery is written by Samsung while the system file picker (called DocumentsUI) is mainly written by Google, so they might be having different strategies on what photos to hide, e.g. Samsung thinks Facebook photo download directory shouldn't be shown, while DocumentsUI doesn't, so it's entirely possible that you can only find the photo via picker.

Using Old Galaxy Tab A as Photo Frame

My Dad is in a care home without WiFi available. Visiting is difficult due to distance and health restrictions.
I would like to set him up with some sort of "digital photo frame" that my siblings and I can add photos to. I have an older Tab A with LTE that I figured I could rig up with Google Photos and a shared album we can all add photos to.
Unfortunately that doesn't work quite as seamlessly as I'd hoped. I can make the screensaver run a slideshow from a Google Photos album, which does what I need, but I have to actually go into the album and add the shared photos to it before the screensaver picks them up.
I've found a few digital frame apps that claim to be able to use a Google Photos album but so far no luck making them work, and the visiting problems means I can't regularly update photos in person.
My Nest Hub nicely does what we need (running a slideshow from a shared Photos album), but with no WiFi, it can't connect to that.
I figured if I could remote into the thing, I could force those updates, or just upload photos into a proper digital frame app... but this is too old (Android 5.0.2) for TeamViewer, and so far the only other thing I've found that claims to do what I need is Rescue+, which requires the tablet user to enter a code.
Can anyone suggest either another digital frame app that can pull photos from a shared online album, OR some kind of remote-access app that will work with this older device?
Yes, I've also thought of some kind of WiFi hotspot to provide internet for a proper digital frame, but I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible on-site and keep the equipment count down.

The simple solution is to just buy a digital frame that is already made for that purpose, otherwise, more than likely you won't be pleased with the results you get with what you are currently trying.

Okay... do you know of one with LTE?
If not, it's still not a "simple solution."

True. If it is a tablet that can be activated on a mobile plan/prepaid network, that would reduce the amount of hardware and it could be set up to access remotely to update or add photos.
