I just got an LG GT540 for traveling abroad (I use a Droid X on Verizon for most of the year). It was a good deal, but it came with Android 2.1 and I want to be able to use apps off the SD card.
When I started searching around for ROM's, I found a plethera of SwiftDroid developer forums and was about to install v1.4b when I found out that most people were expecting v1.5 to come out today, and it did (v1.5FM). Most people seem to like what they're seeing but they keep referencing FastBoot which I do not have. I'm fairly technical (rooted my Droid X, used Clockwork Recovery to install Liberty v1.5 ROM on that, etc) but I need a basic user guide for using FastBoot --that is if I decide to use this SwiftDroid v1.5FM rom that I am 20 seconds away from being done downloading... HOWEVER, there is one guy who posted that the camera button (physical hard button on the side of the phone) is not letting him take a photo, meaning he has to hit the soft button on the screen, which I would find extremely annoying. I'm also worried that the google apps aren't included (but can't ask the people in the dev forum cuz I'm a newbie). I want to be able to use the Market, Gmail, etc, right afterwards. My Liberty ROM wasn't missing anything on my Droid X aside from the BLUR and Verizon-specific stuff that I didn't like/caused lag anyway (yay, no more task killer processes required to kill other task processes haha).
Anyone else know if the camera button issue on the SwiftDroid 1.5FM rom is a widespread issue or just that one guy's issue? Do you know if I'm going to need to install the Google Apps myself? Know where to get FastBoot and a basic guide for using it? Other comments? Perhaps I'm missing out on a much better ROM opportunity I should research?
Thanks!

Anyone got any idea how to restore this to factory OTB settings? I basically want to turn it on and see it as a new phone again and set it up all over again... I'm too new for android for the sales rep to throw me in it like a toddler at a public pool
Settings -> SD & Phone Storage -> Factory data reset
alright next question!
Is there a wiki that can teach me or introduce me to android in a simpler manner? Like how to become a power user with customization and such? I AM SO EXCITED =P
Hmm...
I think most of us have learned Android by trying everything until something breaks.
On just about every screen in every app, I try the menu button and try long-pressing things to see what type of context menus I get. If you don't do anything to root your phone (like using Visionary) then you really can't break anything.
For extreme customizations you would have to wait anyway since there aren't any custom ROMs our for mT4G yet. But, you can go as far as putting a different launcher onto the phone like Launcher Pro or ADW (but I really like the HTC Sense customizations so I'm sticking with stock on that one).
I think you've already found the best Android resource now that you are reading XDA. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you want - just try a search first so you don't get flamed. LOL
I also read the T-Mobile mT4G forum regularly but that generally covers the less sophisticated types of questions if you know what I mean.
Good luck and have fun!
Kevin
I have a sanding vibrant which is much easier to use because it's on 2.1 as opposed to 2.2. I will trade it for your 4g if it's really driving u nuts. ; )

I've heard ADW - what is a custom launcher? can I use multiple or revert back to the original without many issues?
Also I'm a power google voice user (been using it since closed grand central beta) and power Google Sync user, when I'm first setting up this MT4G if I just put in my gmail account information in the default email will it setup a full ActiveSync/Push Calendar/contact/email setup or do I need to set it as an activesync/exchange like I did on the iphone for it to work properly?
IMO LauncherPro is the best launcher, it gives you a lot of cool customizations. And you can revert to the stock launcher at anytime.
If you log into your phone with your gmail account it will push/sync all your info.
So I got the Nexus S, i9023, after spending a good amount of time trying to figure how to do the Root, CWR, ROM, I still can't get things to work properly.
My main issues with the Nexus are the camera while recording cause it sucks!, the media playback controls on the lock screen and the speed of the unit in general, I mean N4G.com feels as if the phone was using a browser from the middle ages!!!!
I've been going around the forums but is kinda hard to read along threads of 100 pages of posts, not a guide with straight answers, just for the steps I have managed to accomplish I had to use Youtube, Google and another 4 pages + these forums to make sense of what's first and then go on "trial & error" cause some of the steps have updates on different pages that others don't even mention.
So, I was able to Root, CWR and then install CM7, then I reverted to stock cause the Market is gone.....lovely....but is even better afterwards.....
So the phone works on the stock Android again, but now I can't make the phone to boot on recovery again so I can use the CWM options, I can't make RM to install or run anything, the phone will simply does nothing...and if I try on flashing the Clockworkmod recov then I get a "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"........and I have SU installed.........
Btw, how do I install a kernel??? or flash the camera (if that's possible)....
Thx to any kind soul who could share it's own experience....
I recommend you do more reading and research before you flash anything. Cm7 does not come with market for legal reasons, you have to flash it separately. To flash a kernel you just download and flash it in recovery.

In your current situation you need to use fastboot to reflash recovery and use recovery to reflash superuser.

there is a one click root option which i keep on my desktop. way more than one click but i it does everything pretty much for u. try doing that.
Ns4g.com is bad because they have terribly coded flash content.

Hello all, thx for the replies, N4G can't be that bad since the issue repeats itself at other pages like cnn, espn or even worst if u try eltiempo.com (newspaper from Colombia), the last one lags horrible on pc using FF and doesn't even load as full page on the Nexus or my N8, that page is so badly designed that even the mobile version sucks (problem is the news back home are kinda best shown there....).
In any case, as I said before, "Trial & Error", I already have installed CM7, Liquid SR, Miui and Oxygen, loved Oxygen, kept Miui, Liquid is a nice idea but needs work and CM7 is a bit rough.
So far I've learned how to restore from an image of a previous ROM (kept my original backed up in case!!!), also how to reinstall SU in case I have to go back to stock, how to install a new kernel (thx to Google and not the Search in the forums!!!), I did also overclocked my NS to 1.2G and seems pretty stable.
Things I still don't like and will look in the future to solve are the issues with the camera, Miui fixes part of the issues with lag while recording, I got a snag during a test recording made today, also the controls are not that amazing for the camera, no Zoom???, and the Gallery is not a plain gallery but mainly a file browser which makes it confusing if u forget what folder ur supposed to check...
Also the issue with the battery not hitting 100%...kinda silly....
In all it's been good but the time spent is a pain, mainly cause there is no explanation about how to apply the files, what order, etc, is nice to find things here in XDA but is rather annoying to have to use Google to find things around...
Thx again for the replies!!!
Hey everyone:
I am not really sure where to start, but ill give it a shot:
My wife wants a home phone, and I don't really feel it's necessary, but I kept seeing the Archos 35 Smart home phone, I couldn't find it anywhere, went to eBay.co.uk and found a place selling them, called them, got it shipped to me.
After figuring out some minor power adaptor related issues, I now have a working Archos android home phone.
Basically it has Android 2.2 and I would like to root it, cook/install a custom ROM and get the Android Market on it, but I have no idea where to start.
I have rooted several different phones and installed all kinds of custom ROMs, (including some of the hardest phones to unlock/root, like Moto Atrix, Telus HTC Desire HD, etc.) So ability is not an issue. I have just never been the first to have a phone, or a need to figure out how to root/cook my own ROM.
Where do I start? I want to make this baby all it can be!
I also know this phone is coming to North America in the next few months, so this development could potentially help some NA users in the future.
I am able to install from unknown sources, so that may help with known root methods...
Please, if you are in the know, let me know what I need to do. Keep in mind that this would be the first time I would be doing it, so step-by-step instructions, or a link to a place that can give me step-by-step directions would be nice.
Thanks!
Any ideas? I want to be able to integrate my gmail account... you cant even do that out of box...

I would like to know more about that phone model.
I hope somebody helps you.
Can you block phone numbers to avoid scam calls or telemarketing with it?
Superoneclick. Z4root. Gingerbreak. There are others you may get lucky.

Go to AppsLib and install ArcTools - that will get you started and let you install Market, GMail etc. Had my Smart Home Phone about a week now and trying to iron out some bugs.
Caller ID has stopped displaying so I did a reset and now I have lost all the default Archos apps including AppsLib!
Will have to get the latest Firmware online and reinstall
The last time I rooted a phone and installed a custom ROM was on a HTC with Windows 6.5, so to say I'm rusty is an understatement.
And honestly, I liked HTC Sense so I never had the urge. But now, I have been waiting for the ICS Android for so long that I think it's time to Mod Again! And it will be nice to get rid of that pink T-Mobile crapware! So I have a few newbie questions, I'll hope you'll forgive me.
1. Will I be able to keep all my app store bought apps? How?
2. Can I go back to the "official" ROM if I have to send in my device for repair?
3. What are considered the best HTC Sense/ICS Roms for the sensation?
4. Will I be able to migrate my contacts? How? (and will I be able to get rid of the awful duplication of records that seems to have occurred somehow)
5. Is there a reason to actually not go for HTC Sense? I personally really like the smart linking features of contact related information and the way contacts work with all the social networks info in one contact record. I think the contacts are where the phone shines. I hate the bugs in the music app and I don't really like the photo app either.
6. Where can I find a good step by step guide? (I can find it myself, but while I'm asking the pro's anyways)
7. Are there any limitations such as things that won't work as well because of driver support etc?
Cheers,
Marc
Hey XDA!
I rooted my Infuse months ago and flashed a custom ROM I found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412957) with little trouble. ZEUS has worked great ever since and rarely fails for my purposes. I have a Limited Data plan (200 MB/Month) with AT&T and no warranty to worry about voiding
Anyway, I have some specific questions that seem to be affected by the conditions I've described. I apologize in advance, I'm by no means an expert and would appreciate any guidance offered
1) Being that I'm rooted and running a custom ROM, the usual methods of changing certain preferences are complicated. Specifically, how do I enter the "saved words" or "dictionary" that autocorrect uses for inputted text? I'd like to add/edit/delete words. Is there a method? With the stock ROM, it was pretty simple, but now I don't see any similar options when I'm in the settings menu.
2) I think Swype isn't supported by the new ROM because I no longer had the option of selecting it once I rooted and I do find I miss it lol. Any way to restore it without downloading an app?
3) Recently, I tried paying for an app* in the Market (or Play Store or whatever you wanna call it, but it'll always be the Market to me lol) and found that the only way to do that was through using Google Wallet. I found that Google Wallet wasn't listed in the Play Store when I searched the exact words "Google Wallet" and somewhere in this effort, concluded that ZEUS was too outdated to support the app. I think a prompt from the Play Store confirmed this, but I'm still not sure. Isn't ZEUS just a variation of Gingerbread, anyway? So, since I'm rooted with a custom ROM, am I ineligible from purchasing in the Market?
4*) APPS: Do you guys even "buy" apps? I'm vaguely familiar with the idea of "cracked apps" but have no idea how to safely procure any.
5) Generally, should I just flash to a newer ROM? ZEUS has worked pretty well, but the above issues (the most pressing being 1 and 4) have made me rethink ZEUS. That was months ago, is it now outdated? Any good ICS ROMS (unported, because I don't like dealing with the bugs that inevitably follow ported ROMS) available?
Any help would be a appreciated, I'm sorry this was such a long post and I did scour the forums as best I could before posting this thread.
Thanks a lot!

1) Don't know about that. It's never been an issue for me. In general you'll find the settings for that type of stuff by opening the settings in the keyboard. But in general I think most people add words one at a time as it is necessary... I don't know if you can access the whole dictionary in an easy way, and even if you could... why?
2) Swype is an app. You don't have it, you can't use it. I would just reinstall.
3) ??? No. You shouldn't have any issues like this. Never happened to me; can't think of a reason why. Maybe problem with data connection? Maybe you should install a different ROM and start from scratch.
4) You'll get in trouble for even mentioning that, probably. Buy your apps, support the devs, period.
5) Yes, IMHO. ZEUS has been surpassed (again, IMHO.) I would run AEON or Vagabond for GB... both stable, great pieces of work. ICS still has room to grow and progress to be made, I think. There are some great choices there, and exciting features too. ParanoidAndroid, RemICS, jblparisi's... great stuff, (also none of it would be possible without jt1134 and Entropy) but I always end up going back to GB for the time being because of speed and stability.
Flash a new ROM, I would suggest. If your problems persist... search xda or ask.
But to me it sounds like your ROM just isn't working for you and you need something a little different...

Thank you SO MUCH for that comprehensive and helpfully speedy reply! Definitely will flash one of the newer ROMs you mentioned after I do some reading up. That, I think, will resolve most of these issues
In regards to why you would access the inputted text dictionary: to add/edit/delete words that appear as suggestions for autocorrect. I have several recurring words that are either in caps lock or misspelled ("you" becomes "yoy" way too often because I accidentally saved it one day). With the stock ROM and most others, accessing the setting is pretty straightforward. Settings/Language and Input/Dictionary or something like that.
In any case, I'll just flash something else, it's time for a change. Thanks again!
